- A review of the Priority 600X Adventure Bike for Bikepacking. This bike was custom designed by Priority Bicycles with input from Ryan Van Duzer. The design incorporates "most desired" features for extended off grid adventures. The Pinion gearbox and Gates carbon belt drive ensure ease of maintenance under the most harsh conditions. No more messy chain!

Great Steve! Your videos are personal and you mention things that us 70 plus people are well off hearing. I'm 73 and I guess due to the years of sports, I found myself no longer able to ride my Cannondale. I'd have great pain in two joints, after a mile. So, I bought an ebike. The D&L Canal Trail, down here in PA, is behind my house and it beckons every day. I'm able to get three hours a day in where with the Cannondale, I was dead in the water. I'm thinking a few mentions from a straight up guy like you might encourage more of us oldies to get out and ride ebikes, if unable to ride bikes. I'm alive again! After a year, and 2,800 miles, I still can't wait for my next ride. Thank you for being here Man!
Hi Brian and thank you very much for sharing your experiences. E-bikes are a wonderful invention aren't they. I'm going to produce a video with an e-bike in the near future. I will encourage older folks to discover the freedom offered by an e-bike. Thank you mentioning the D&L Canal Trail. Since I was not aware of the trail, I looked it up and was pleasantly surprised by the website. I would like to ride the trail in the future. It's now on my bucket list. hello im 66 i did replace my car with a bike... i use it like car i do food shopping , go to mall .. go to coffee house an what ever i need. ... i rarely use a car ... mabe once a mouth
I returned to the car-free life 3 years ago following the death of my wife of 42 years.
It's easier to be car-free today than in 1976. I can order those dreaded heavy items on line and have them delivered, laundry detergent from Wal Mart, bathroom shower doors from Home Depot, rather than trying to carry these things on the bike or borrowing a car.
Freedom from the car life is great.

I am an old (66) bike rider, and bike packer but I really love fenders to keep the dirt down. I had a belt drive Trek (soho). I went through deep water with it, and it got water in the shifter; one day later it froze up and was unusable. I hated the bike, the breaks were crap. I hope you don't have the issue with water in the shifter box that I had.
You keep going, you are paving the way for the rest of us old people 🙂

Hey Steve… As you know I have a Priority 600 - the 600X was not even an idea when I bought mine. As I ride asphalt and rail trails, it works very well. You captured the Pinion / Gates belt qualities very nicely. One recommendation is to get an extra belt and then practice putting it on. Tensioning also needs to be practiced by using an app developed by Gates. You then “strum” the belt and the sound is captured by your phone… there is a meter associated with the sound - if it sounds right then you are good. Only one negative that you should monitor - the kick stand on my 600 was cast metal and worked well when the bike was unloaded. Once I added all my panniers, the kickstand twisted on the single point attachment and eventually snapped. I now use the “Clickstand.” Have a great ride in New York!
Hi Dave, thanks for the comment. I see that the 600is a great bike also. I bought the 600X for a great deal from a guy that only rode it 10 miles before deciding he didn't care for it. I already downloaded the app for belt tightening. Sorry about the kickstand issue. On the 600X they upgraded the kickstand to have a more robust build and mounting. Great set up and your an inspiration for 5his 68.5 yr old! A lightweight water filter ( Katadyn, Sawyer etc) instead of 2-3 bottles would save you a lb or 2. Have a safe and great trip!!!
Hi there and thanks for the nice comment. I always carry a Sawyer, however I also like to carry enough water on a 70 mile flat day to drink a bottle about every hour and not have to hunt for water. On days with a lot of climbing and near water sources three of the bottles are empty. Thank again and have a great day, Steve
Congratulations on the new bike. That looks awesome. I looked it up online and cannot believe how cheap it is. With a Pinion drivetrain, I was expecting at least twice the price. Loaded with your luggage it looks amazing.

I watch many of your videos as we prepared for our Key West to Portland Maine which we completed at the end of May on our 20+ Trek 520s and first looked at replacing them with a Specialized Diverge that you used but just started looking at the Priority bikes and now I see this video so perfect timing. Thanks for all the effort creating these very helpful videos! We also have old Trek 5200s and hard tail mt bikes for the fast flat road rides and single tracks. Debating if we can find a bike to do it all and since we like the tour party pace and not worried about the weight the Priority 600x may be the one especially when I want it nice and quiet and maintenance free.

I’m looking for the next bike … already have the mountain bike, gravel bike and road bike … although I just love ‘‘em all for their individual features and character, there’s need for another. I use the Trek Checkpoint for gravel touring but of course there are limitations in the gearing, the chain drive and so on. Hence looking ….
While I’m 78 and intend to continue with ‘plastic camping’ - motels etc - your videos are inspiring me to look again at the joys of tents …

What a nice bike! I totally agree with enjoying the ride along the way and not focusing on the destination because the destination means the journey has come to an end.

Nice! I can see where the pinion gearbox would be nice to have. Of all the mechanical problems I've had while out riding most of them have been derailleur related. I'm always bending the mount so that it skips and drops gears.

Steve, well done!! Doing the same, taking some time off from Gravel racing in Colorado and converting my Specialized Diverge into a bike packing machine! Bike frame bags are Revelate, and they fit perfectly. Old Man Mountain rear rack, Ortlieb Panniers, SRAM Eagle 10-52 (electronic). First trip next month; Fort Collins, via Salida to Santa Fe! Why Santa Fe? My wife loves Santa Fe so hopefully she will drive south and give me ride home!! Cycling strong at 68!! Well done; ride hard-live long!! LH

I have done a lot of reading and seen a lot of videos by Ryan Van Duzer on the Priority Pinion gear bikes. You provided additional information on the 600X which was greatly appreciated. I am interested in the pinion system and Priority makes them much more affordable than Co-Motion or Carver. Thanks for the info ... safe travels.

Hi Steve! We met in Kingston today on the Empire State Trail (Kingston Point Rail Trail). Your 600X is definitely a nice set up... I've toured on a 1983 Trek 850, Trek 520, and a Long Haul Trucker. The internal gear box and belt drive would have been nice on all of my tours over the past 37 years. This as sand, mud and general road/trail grim combined with lube makes for a messy and worn drive train by the end of a 2-3+ month bicycle tour. Not having to deal with that would have been a pleasure! I hope you found the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail segment of the Empire State Trail in good shape... I've got a vested interest in that trail as I've been removing fallen trees from that trail for years...

Hey Buck, I always carry bear spray in my area of Northwestern Connecticut. We have an over population of black bears. They avoid people mostly, unless you get between a mama and her cubs. So when I go on long distance rides I just automatically take the spray. I checked out my email and will take a closer look at the glasses when I get back from my trip. I don't carry an extra belt for my motorcycle. That bicycle belt might match a Gates part commonly available.

I’m curious to see how this holds up on a tour. I have a Fuji Touring Disc and a Peugeot P8 that I normally use for a tour but this looks quite comfortable and I love the idea of a belt drive. I bet it’s much more reliable than a chain drive.
Hi there and thanks for the comment. The bike performed flawlessly. The drivetrain is very quiet and I’m still getting used to the concept of no grease on my calf from a chain. The upright position is also very comfortable. The bike handles a heavy load nicely. The robust kickstand is also a welcome addition to the bike. Love the bike! Thanks again, Steve
i think is all good that you are out enjoying life cycling , maybe you need to open your mind to the Ebike world - at 70 i ll definitely put you on an e-bike Gravel , so you can load it up with snacks and bottles and ride for hours with a smile on your face day after day without feeling the heaviness of that priority bike . A proper E-bike will roll back your clock 35 years !!! and extend your riding for another 15-20 depending on your balance or health . start reading and watching some reviews , you will be surprised what the world has to offer . The seat is VERY overpriced, however it is the best for long distance riding. I highly recommend a suspension seatpost. I have a U.S.E. It's the best. Get one with some damping, you don't want to boing, boing. Highly, highly recommend a suspension post.

To those who have feet/sole sensitivity: Lanolin on the foot is a superb mitigation to pain.
Always wanted a belt drive, seems like it would cut down on maintenance. Before I discovered dry lube, my bike was a mess. But it sure would be nice to not have to deal with a chain.😀

Hi Ian and congrats on your 600X. The front bottle cages are mounted on cheap strap-on mounts that you can get on Amazon. They're called "Topeak Versa Bike Mount (2 Piece per Set), Black, 20-60mm". They sell for about $12 USD. I was concerned whether they would be strong enough to hold bottle cages and withstand vibration. However, they work just fine. Thanks, Steve

Hi Mike and thanks for the question. The panniers are Ortlieb Gravel Pack panniers. They are the smallest panniers sold by Ortlieb and after 4 years of touring, there are no water leaks. Worth the extra money to buy Ortlieb. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve

Great video. Is the pinion noisier in the taller gears compared to the lower ones? I notice when I get up into 15-18 gear, my pinion is noticeably louder.

Watching this video, I notice the clear plexiglass plate on the top of the rear rack. Was that your idea? Does it work well instead of a using mud guards? Thanks!

Hi Mike, I found mounts on Amazon, Topeak Versa Bike Mount (2 Piece per Set). They are plastic but very stable. I've used them for about 800 miles with no problem. And they only cost $12. Thanks for asking and have a good day, Steve

I see you put bar extenders on your handlebars to get more hand positions. How hard was it to take off front brake lever and grip to slide on the bar extenders and to put the grip back on again?
Hey Loren, it was easy on this bike because the grips are held on with screws. They easily slide off. Other bikes I've owned weren't so easy. Had to cut them off with a box cutter and buy new grips. The brake levers came off easily by loosening the small bolts. Went back together with no problem. Thanks Loren and have a great day, Steve

Hi David and thanks for watching! I haven't found a really great fender solution other than the flimsy plastic fenders that I could put on with plastic zip ties. I did mount a clear piece of lexan plastic on top of my rear rack to act as a fender. Works "ok". On a tour I use a seat pack the shields my backside from water. Not really much of a problem. great video, I was wondering what size 600x do you have, small, medium, or large and how tall you are? I am trying to decide what size to get, I’m 5’9” with 31” inseam so I’m thinking the small size?
Hi Michael and thanks for the question. I'm 5' 8" with a 30" inseam. I ride a small 600X. The 600X sizes all run large. If the small size was any larger it wouldn't fit me. I believe the small would work well for you. Thanks again and have a great day, Steve

Hey Steve, thank you for this nice video. I'm about to buy the same bike and am wondering about the weight limit, when it's packed. How many pound of loads do you carry? And have you observed any whobleness as it might not be as stiff as a Touring bike?

Hi Nils, I’m not aware of any weight limit. The bike weight is about 34 lbs. I just completed a 405 mile tour with 35 additional pounds of stuff. No wobble at all. The extra low gears help although I still found myself walking up a few quarter mile long 12% grade hills. Thanks, Steve

How do you have mounted the water bottles on the front fork? I thought the suspension fork has no mounting options? Because of that I'm even reckoning of changing the fork in order to be able to mount front panniers.
@@Anjenito Hi there, just saw your comment. I bought cheap universal bottle mounts on Amazon. They are plastic with hose clamp style fitting to mount on the fork. Not very durable but didn't fall apart on my 400 mile trip. Thanks again, Steve

I have the 600. It is extremely difficult to fix a flat on it because the wtb tires are crazy hard to break the bead on and to lift off of the rim. On your bike tour how did you fix flat tires. If you did not have a flat were you aware of how hard it is to take the tire off the rim and then put back on? I would not be able to change this tire road side. It took me hours and a broken tire iron to do it in my dining room.
Hi there and thanks for sharing your experience with the tire problem. I have not had a flat on my 600X yet. I did change my tires to Goodyear Peak 2.25" tubeless tires. I did not have your unfortunate experience of difficult tire removal. However, I've experienced the problem on my Jamis Gravel bike with WTB tires. It seems that some tires are more difficult than others depending on the style and manufacturer. I've found the Goodyear tubeless to be easier to install. I haven't tried to remove the tires yet since I still have about a years worth of tread before needing replacement. I've also found tubeless tires to be easier to remove since there's no tube to deal with. With over 10,000 miles of experience with tubeless tires, I've never had a flat while cycling that couldn't be fixed by plugging the hole with a "bacon strip", adding fluid and air. Tubeless tires eliminate so many potential problems. Thanks and have a great day, Steve
The 600's tires and rims are meant to be tubeless and I'm sure that is the reason they are so bloody hard to remove and put back on. I wonder why Priority decided to ship out the 600 with tubes in them? I mean they are all the way there so why the tubes? (well maybe the wheels need tubeless rim tape before making the swap).
I like the idea of using the orange tire goop and using the plugs, next time I think I'll give it a go. Thanks.
ps Just bought the Priority Belt Drive 7 speed internal hub Folder and its mighty fine. and a bargain to boot. It comes with fenders and a rear rack already installed. Also have the Priority Turi townie bike and the Apollo 11 gravel bike which is fabulous. All belt drive with internal transmissions, no chain maintenance and filth and no derailleur to catch dirt and have to clean. A dream come true for me. Priority has young and innovative product designers and helpful customer service. I asked to buy stock in their company 3 years ago but they are not taking on investors. They are really going places.
On your trips that you have done do you always use ride with gps an your review of it for long distance travel
Hi Rodney, yes I always use Ride with gps. I map out the routes on the app and download the map to my iPhone for offline use. Works well for me.

The 600 has fenders and a dymo front hub. No suspension fork. I put some Jones H Bars on my 600.

Does anyone have problems servicing your bike? I purchased an e-bike online several months ago, and the light and horn never worked. I called five bike stores and two motorcycle shops, and no one wanted to work on the problem! They sent a new horn and switch, but that didn't solve the problem. At 79, I am riding a 20-inch step-thru bike. I want the same size with a belt bike and mid-motor as you have here.
Hi George and thank you for the comment. Since my bike is new, I haven't had anyone work on it. In the past I've always worked on my own bikes. The belt drive is connected to a 12 speed "transmission" that looks like a motor, however it doesn't have a motor. Bike shops can be reluctant to work on bikes their not familiar with. Hi Vince, the fully loaded touring setup including bike is about 60 lbs. Add four filled water bottles at 1.5 lbs each. The bike is equipped with very low gearing that makes it manageable up most hills. It is much more efficient than a traditional touring bicycle. Most tours I leave all the cooking equipment home. I also use ultralight tent and sleeping system. Otherwise the setup would be close to 90 lbs. Thank for asking, Steve

How is this bike on the road?
It's very smooth, however with 2.25" tires that take 45 psi max it's not a bike I would want to ride with friends on road bikes. You could run skinnier tires with higher air pressure but that's not what the bike is intended for. For extended road conditions I use my gravel bike with 40mm tires inflated to 65psi. Still love the bike for bike packing and off road.
nice bike, probably worth a used car or two. i hope they start mass produce that seat some day. so the price goes down.
