I never got to see Bobby Allison race. He had retired by the time I was getting into NASCAR. I was 8 years old when he had a near fatal crash at Talladega in the spring of 1987 which prompted NASCAR to install restrictor plates on the engines of the cars there & at Daytona in an attempt to reduce their top speed. His son Davey was at his prime when he tragically lost his life in a helicopter crash in 1993. It was many years later when I would learn that Davey had a younger brother named Clifford who was also killed in a racing accident at Michigan International Speedway the year prior. Bobby has now reunited with his sons. R.I.P Bobby Allison
Funny story about the Allisons. CBS used to only show the last few laps of Nascar races before 1979 I think it was. That year Nascar begged and pleaded and probably bribed someone to show the whole Daytona 500. So everything is going well and Nascar is happy as a clam until a couple laps before the finish. Donnie Allison and Cale Yarborough got into a wreck and both cars were damaged too badly to finish. As was common in those days, Donnie and Cale got out of their cars, started yelling and blaming the other one for the wreck, and promptly began fighting. Bobby drove over the finish line and went around to the other side of the track and got out of his car and proceeded to help Donnie fight Cale. Both pit crews arrived next and they joined in, and Nascar executives were about to have a stroke because they were scared to death they would never get a race on TV again because CBS finished their coverage with a huge brawl still going on lol
