A future classic. One of the best samplers ever made. You just have to accept its limitations. But what it does do, it does extremely well. And the sound quality is phenomenal
@@dennisbouma37 32 seconds per pad, and yes has stereo in and can do live looping, IE: sample a loop and instantly start to play back the loop in time with project.
I love my SP-16, its ease of use which allows you to concentrate on the music, without going through the instructions. I cherish each time I use it the engineers who designed the SP-16 workflow. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
It's a fantastic machine, with an amazing hands on interface, I have never opened the user manual except for looking at the MIDI implementation chart etc. Though it's a shame Pioneer has ended its product life cycle, they had close to a diamond here and just dumped it. For me it's mostly about sync stuff, which is ridiculous as the DJ Link is really comprehensive and contains time code etc. so it probably would be super easy to add MTC, both generation and following, to this machine!
@@FLAMBINO These machines are designed for DJs, though SP-16 was afaik aimed at a combo live/preprod, and I have a feeling that Pioneer kind of lack in knowledge about preprod environments and workflows, which is why a lot of people feel a lack of a bunch of things, often related to the workflow in conjunction with other gear and integration with other parts of the workflow.
I have a decent arsenal of samplers and groove boxes and the SP 16 is my favorite and the cornerstone of my set up. It is so easy to use and reliable; it has never get stuck/frozen. Yes it can do some of the thighs that other devices can but it is not a production or DAW in a box device like an MPC or Maschine + so comparing them is like comparing apples to oranges. One advantage the SP16 has over everything else out there is the integration of the AS-1 if that’s part of your set up. So as long as you are aware of its limitations this product is ideal to make sample based tracks.
The SP-16 has been the centerpiece of my production studio and live performances since its release in 2017. It completely changed how I produce music for the better. There is a long list of things I dislike about it but they are far outweighed by the intuitive and "fun" workflow. I spend weeks/months in the studio creating content to feed in to the SP-16 and with enough preparation I can perform an entire set of my original music in a way that most people on the dancefloor would not be able to tell it wasn't a DJ set if they didn't see the table full of hardware I am using to perform. Definitely a highly misunderstood and slept on piece of production gear. I bought two so I can leave one hooked up in the studio and use the 2nd for shows and portability. Cold dead hands piece of kit, for sure.
You can really do any kind of music on the sp16. Even strange measures. Also you can record live instruments or synths. If you cannot produce music with the sp16 then you have things to learn. Love this machine, get away from the daw, work on ideas, tracks or live sets. Work on the music without distraction
Sadly, an abandoned piece of underdeveloped gear (by Pioneer) with no updates since 2019 with loads of potential still left in it. The release of the MPC Live obliterated the Toraiz's future sales. The Toraiz is limited in functionality but sounds way fatter and fuller than the Akai MPC.
enjoyed the video! i've been using the sp16 for close to two years now, it's one of the best samplers out there! it's so, so easy to use and sounds amazing... anything you put in there that is going through those prophet filters and the compressor in the master FX is gonna come out the other end sounding spot-on. when sampling through the audio inputs, it adds a bit of weight as well. my only complaint would be the timestretch isn't really that great... but on the flipside, i've never heard any other timestretch that sounds like it... so even that has character! i wish it had the hot slice feature like the DJS 1000 :( toraiz was a single firmware update from perfection.
I love my Toraiz Sp-16 and have created full tracks on the unit. I love the sound better then my MPC live 2 all I create on this unit is experimentation 🎵 music you really need to spend more time with it. Thx for taking out the time to give your opinion.
@@FLAMBINO looking forward to your future vids! Had mine for several years now and it's the one machine that's never left my desk. It's bloody sexystylish as well, beautifully constructed and still thoroughly modern looking...quite unlike the mac's which feel like relics. The obvious negative is how Pio basically dropped updating it (all those fx's grrr)...and the plastic grey pots of the filter felt cheap, but I replaced those:)
Been looking for an intuitive sampler with a great filter. Menu diving takes me out of the zone. I really want something simple that makes me concentrate on just making music. Do you reckon this is a good fit? Nearly bought the digitakt today but have the analog rytm so just looking for an easy to use stereo sampler.
@@CleanConnections this is pretty much the anti-elektron machine, but Im pretty certain it's just what you need. It's fast, sleek, and just pure pleasure. Sounds bloody amazing as well. And it looks/feels sexy! It's certainly limited in terms of sampler mangelling, and the sequencing is very, very basic compared to the options of an op-z/Polyend Play....but you'll LOVE it. It's the machine I'd save first from the fire. Go for it!!
@@sodiumlights thanks for the reply. Has helped me think it out…I have the elektron rytm so got the complex in depth stuff covered. Ijust like the idea of more stripped away simple sampler that does the basics quickly. I have plenty of guitar pedals if i need to mangle anything and this has loads of outputs to play with plus those Dave smith filters! The other contender is the new Mpc live 2 which I realise will be much more advanced but with that comes a bigger learning curve (not owned an mpc before) the toraiz just seems like you probably don’t even need the manual! And I mean that in a good way. Figure the limitations Will make me concentrate on my samples going in right rather than trying to fix them after. Cheers for The advice 👍
Still have the SP16 after so many years, it's the most direct sampler, the filters are great, the slice and scale controls are great and the UI is damn quick. But it lacks that direct knob handling that real samplers have. I wish you could swap out the functions on those 6 rotary knobs, that would do a lot more for live play.
I feel like a reverb knob would go well next to the filters & drive knobs. Also a 'cut' button to instantly bypass all of them (for when you're returning to main groove at a drop)
It was too expensive when it launched, but you can buy them second hand for reasonable prices. No updates? There won't be any future updates, but Pioneer did roll out some pretty big updates while this was still an active product - the final update in late 2019 was a gamechanger
Great device, purchased early 2018. I can def appreciate early adopters who paid full price $1499 and then the DJS1000 was released w live looping. As more time went on price came down to $899. Yes it would be great if Pioneer updated the unit the way Elektron has updated the Digitakt. Def made quite a few songs with mine but sold it because it became a nice to have. I did get a Digitakt later on and was really let down by the mono sounds, lack of proper slicing, and no external storage. This was later added in an update but at the time the MIDI tracks on the Digitakt could only trigger the C Chromatic scale. Furthermore a brilliant feature of the SP16 & DJS1000 is to change the tracks from Audio to midi as needed, where as the Digitakt/Octatrack have fixed track types. To me it's a great device...last year I missed it but instead of going back to the SP16 I got the DJS1000. Maybe 1 day I'll get another SP16 for production and the DJS1000 can just live in my DJ setup
