They did Dinotopia dirty , and I didn't have to be a fan to know that
At least the Land Before Time sequels featured mostly accurate dinosaurs than the ones in this movie.
Its like they never even studied, aside from the Quetzylcoatlus.

Nice, I wished Dinotopia has some advanced CGI and some good storytellings.

The live action miniseries is actually a sequel of sorts to the original book series and is kind of a guilty pleasure of mine. Yes, it's kinda boring and relies WAY too much on exposition, but i still have some nostalgia for it.
But with this film, i don't think i'll be coming back to it anytime soon.
I.....I....I honestly did not know that.
Problem is, we didn't WANT a sequel to the books, we wanted an adaptation of the books themselves.

Great review! This movie is an insult to the book series I’m reading right now, but to be honest, it’s not as bad as Age of Dinosaurs, which is by far the worst dinosaur movie, in my opinion.

Most of everything you've ranted on about this movie ; the poop jokes l, the utter insult to lovers of dinosaurs the is exactly how I felt about Walking with Dinosaurs in 3D!!!!

Although you do have to give Jamie Kennedy credit for being able to twist his voice like that. It sounds nothing like his real voice. Kinda like Steve Carell in Despicable Me or Dennis Quaid in that one SpongeBob episode, know what I mean?
Also, how he able to speak English since he was born, and why does his frill and crest look like he’s dressed as a sailor or something?
I remember renting this movie one time, because I thought it was a generic Land Before Time rip-off. I guess since I expected it to be absolutely horrible, and it met my expectation, I couldn't bring myself to get angry. I kind of felt bored after watching it.
And the CGI was done by the guys that did Walking with Dinosaurs? What the heck happened?

I still honestly believe Hotel transylvania pretty enjoyable , also thanks for reminding of the time when Animat was really annoying about his hatred for Sony Animation.
I don't hate it, I just don't think it really deserves the rating I originally gave it. I think it's an okay movie.

Good question. I guess if you had to twist my arm, I would probably have to say... World Beneath. Of course, in preparation for writing this review, I had to reread the first two books.

Technically, the dinosaurs had their own languages in the books - only a few could actually talk to humans.
However, Hewey Toonmore, you are right about this film - it is absolute fucking garbage and disrespects a brilliant book series.

@@Hewylewis However, having ALL the dinosaurs speak perfect English is inaccurate to the books. The only dinosaurs portrayed speaking perfect English are ceratopsians (who are established to be multilingual) and a Deinonychus in one of the Alan Dean Foster books.

Though i never really grew up with any of the Dinotopia books, i can safely say that this movie fails spectacularly even as an animated film on its own. The characters are all one dimensional, the animation is sloppy, the writing is awful, the jokes are cringy as all heck, the villain is awful, and Kex is annoying as fudge (i cant curse). I also find it weird how it seems like he’s supposed to be the main character, yet the film decides to focus on 26 instead. Why? Was Kex so uninteresting to the movie that it decided to just not bother with him at all and switch the focus over to 26 instead? It makes no frigin sense.
While not a great movie, I really don't think it's that bad either. And hey, I'll take it over Smile HD any day!

It's a TH-cam video by MisterDavie. It revolves around Pinkie Pie killing her friends in incredibly brutal ways that would make a horror movie green around the gills. How brutal? Let's go over them, shall we?
1. She kicks Twilight's head off, spraying blood everywhere and showing bits of the spinal cord sticking out.
2. She smashes Rarity's head, exposing her brain and a puddle of blood.
3. She kicks Applejack and beats her, leaving even more blood. Later, Applejack is shown with part of her brain sticking out of her head.
4. She stomps on Rainbow Dash's stomach, causing her intestines to spill from her mouth and nose.
5. She hurts Fluttershy (who starts beating her up in turn, resulting in more bloodshed), beats her with the words to the song so the yellow Pegasus gets a nosebleed, and then shoots a beam, resulting in poor Fluttershy's skin being burned off!
6. Said beam then DESTROYS EQUESTRIA!
Now I hope you can see why I said you're better off not knowing. It all sounds so "great," doesn't it?
The first time I watched this, I saw it as a dumb kid film. And now, thanks to you, I've truly begun to understand the atrocity that this represents.

This movie could be a lot worse than Dino Time that came out from 2012.
I also agree everything you said about this movie as well as the live action series.
If anything else, I would rather sit through Dino Time again then ever watch this nonsense.
I would watch We’re Back A Dinosaur Story than this movie but at least, that movie knew what they’re doing.
On the bright side, The Land Before Time, Dinosaur 2000, The Speckles Movies, The Dino Dan Series and Walking with Dinosaurs Prehistoric Planet 3D were a thousand times better than this movie.

I guess this might be a controversial opinion. But I actually enjoyed the miniseries, it wasn't amazing like I'd hoped, but I don't think it was bad, admittingly the book series probably does deserve better, and I hope one day we get a big budget Dinotopia film.
The TV series, was kinda meh. Nothing to write home about, but not the worst thing ever either, it did have some interesting ideas.
And this movie. . . I'm gonna be honest here. I think this movie is kind of harmless. It's not good by any stretch of the imagination, but I don't feel like it should be considered a stain on the reputation of the franchise. It's a dumb animated movie for kids, and that's pretty much what it ended up being in my opinion. I don't think kids will be bothered by it. Except for Spazz, I'd honestly forgotten about him before the review, and I wish I could go back to that now.
However adults and fans most certainly will not enjoy it.
I'm not sure if that T-Rex was supposed to be Stinktooth, kinda think it was just a reference to the books (one I didn't actually know about).
I actually think that a Dinotopia story can work with modern day if they make it more of a fish out of water story and make it all about the characters adapting and learning to live on the island.
I guess the only reason they kept Twenty-Six was to make it slightly more marketable.
I haven't read much of the books yet, but I do want to get into them more, and the Hallmark series helped me get into them. So some good has come out of it I suppose. I'm not sure, but I think I remember that some dinosaurs actually could talk in the books? I'm pretty sure that one of the first dinosaurs (something like a triceratops but different, sorry I forget the species name) they meet (I also forgot the families name) actually speaks to them and that's what convinces the father to stop shooting. It's been a while since I read the first book however, maybe I'm wrong.
It's correct to say that most of the dinosaurs in the books can't speak as humans do, but there are a select few who can. Bix the Protoceratops is such an example. She can mimic sounds like a parrot, and since she's intelligent, she knows what those sounds mean, so she can therefore speak english, as well as other saurian dialects. It's a fascinating part of the world building that the books are so good at.
Still, that's a far cry from just having all of the dinosaurs speak like it's no big deal. That piece of world building just gets tossed right out the window based on the assumed impatience of the audience...otherwise called laziness.
Good to have another Dinotopia fan comment on this video .And yeah, you are right about Bix. I wish I had mentioned her in the video. Whoops. LOL

I thought the miniseries was OK. Not perfect or groundbreaking, but I have seen a lot worse. It at least tried to keep SOME elements from the source material in tact.
But THIS... Sweet. Merciful. Jesus.
I want to bash the creators heads in. Then they can't hurt any more reputations or scar any more childhood memories.

Whenever I get a new computer.
I would walk past this movie everytime I went to Blockbuster as a kid. And I would always get a weird feeling from it. Glad I skipped over it. I've always thought it was a rip-off of land before time. Aaaaand, I was right.

I didn't even know that there was a book series. The only adaptation of Dinotopia I've ever seen was the live action tv show.

I remember watching the miniseries on Channel 4 when I was 7, and getting the VHS of it from Woolworths after when I saw Like Mike. You're right, the CGI by Framestore is horrible, and the story is boring!

@@Hewylewis I like Stinktooth's colors in the book: a purple, a yellow-green, and a teal color. He looks good in those! How'd James Gurney think of colors like those for a dinosaur? None of the Giganotosaurus photos I saw online had those colors!
I remembered watching the miniseries as a kid and back then being a dum 8 year old I loved it. Now that I'm older I may have to take another look cause I remembered the main character Carl being very unlikeable, stupid love triangle that went nowhere with a bland robotic love interest. CG is dated but it was decent in 2002.
Like you I saw the DVD of QTRSS at blockbuster and rented it. I've never spoken nor thought of it again until I saw this video.

There can be only one movie that’s worse than this and it’s Dino Time. You will hate Dino Time more than Dinotopia trust me I suffered trough Hell watching that one and I give Dinotopia 4/10 and Dino Time 0/10
I haven’t seen Dino Time, but I’ve seen a lot worse (Age of Dinosaurs).
If you think that We’re Back: A Dinosaur’s Story is confusing, then you haven’t seen this Dinotopia movie! While I think the former did managed to be enjoyable with the animation, some likable characters and music, and how it felt very flawed, I think Dinotopia made it worse.

Dinotopia: Quest for the Ruby Sunstone totally pisses on it on levels of generic kids film no one asked for. At least with We're Back, I found the kid characters Louie and Cecilia to be likable and became my favorites, so what makes Mara and Kex any different? Eitherway, it's one of those movies I highly skip.

How is it that books have adaptations that don't follow the book they were supposed to adapt?
War of the worlds is suffering from it, despite that I loved the 2005 remake, Same thing with Dinotopia.
I guess because it's cheaper to set the film in modern times than make it a period piece.

Hell, War of the Worlds would've been an anime since the tripods are mechs piloted from within.

It's explained in the movie that she was labeled as egg 26, and her partner just got so used to calling her 26 that the name stuck.

Hay Hewy Toonmore hows it going and I enjoyed your review and it reminded of me when I was a little kid I use to watch the live action Dinotopia movies Alot and I never knew that it was based off of a book series Because I was not into reading books when I was a kid until I got older the movies weren't as good as I remembered as I was young and I hop you understand that I use to watch it Alot when I was a kid but not as much any more and I planed on getting the Dinotopia books to reed for my self some day and I have loved dinosaurs all my life and I have collected Alote of books about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures and movies documentaries on DVD and Blu-ray

24:22, If I'm going to be 100% honest about this (which I know you might disagree with me on this), but having Malcolm McDowell voice the villain in the movie is kind of a good choice in my opinion and probably the ONLY good thing from this awful film.

Hey Logan, what if I told you I have an idea for a dartoon show starring a dinosaur? It's called Dinosaur Devlin, and it revolves around a young dinosaur who lives with a human family who found his egg while on the way home from a road trip.
So basically... Denver the Last Dinosaur?
@@Hewylewis Honestly, I'd never heard of that show before I came up with the idea. But I watched a bit of it, and I can say it's not the same exact thing.
First, Devlin is found not by teens, but by a normal family consisting of a mom, a dad, a young boy who's like a child prodigy, and a young girl. Second, Devlin doesn't skateboard or wear sunglasses, he rather likes hanging with his adopted family and dreaming of being with other dinos. Third, there's no main villain wanting to use Devlin for money. And fourth, and most importantly, Devlin learns from his adopted family how to actually talk.
So, for the short answer, kinda, but mostly no.
The mini-series and some (I emphasis SOME) of the LBT sequels were defiantly more watchable than this. Speaking of LBT, I always wondered if Don Bluth said anything about them.
Son of MovieNerdKing there is Animation Lookback: Don Bluth Part 4 that features Don Bluth answer that question and also Hewy Toonmore made a cameo appearance.😉👍🏻

@@Hewylewis I'm kick-starting a blog site about anything media related, and starting a series of articles about how they can remake Dinotopia In the style of the books. If HBO or Netflix actually commit to being faithful to the books and give it Mandolorian style filming the possibilities are endless. With high quality CGI for shows like Game of thrones, and Dark Materials there's more possibility now then there was 10 years ago.
I've even started a fancast for the main characters like Ewen McGregor as Arthur Denisen.

Side side note I had the exact same experience. 10 year old self Rented it when I saw it on blockbuster. Haven't spoken of it till I saw your review.

This movie was so cringey that I was laughing out of insanity the whole time.
This movie makes the series good ,personally I like the main series is okay or satisfactory but I never read the book series so I’m not the best person to give an opinion on it.
I never hear dinotopia and I can that this movie is Inuit to the books

I have to say, I disagree that the mini-series was bad. I thought the mini-series was great. Although I won't defend the TV show or animated movie. I guess the Animated film is harmless for kids.

You know the funny thing is, I rented this movie once at Blockbuster thinking it was just gonna be a cute adventure movie. And boy eve as a kid, I was wrong. Even back then I hated this movie, it made me wanna watch The Land Before Time sequels (The one's I liked). And then after I rewatching the movie again, it was bad as I remembered. I would rather watch Barney the Dinosaur over this garbage. This movie sucks.

As much as this Dinotopia movie is bad, at least Alyssa Milano did a good thing years later (starting the Me Too movement to speak out AGAINST sexual harassment or abuse in Hollywood)
