Dinotopia is a line of illustrated children's books by James Gurney, about a society where smart dinosaurs and humans live together, but in 2002, Disney & Hallmark produced a live-action TV mini-series, which is just really really weird!

I grew up on this and forced my boyfriend of 7 years to finally watch it. He loved it. This movie is a fucking GEM. Also the "spiritual marriage" is a human adopting a Dinosaur. Twenty-Six was Karl's life partner. It's like adopting a pet that might outlive you.

Slavery - ongoing in all human civilisation since before the pyrimids, stopped by the british.
Racism - Again ongoing in all human civilisation prior to Britian, and greatly reduced under it, (we have a class system which we generally use instead for discrimination).
Sex slaves / paedophillia - I have no reason to believe that this increased under britian compared with everyone / everywhere else.
Irish Famine - Government didnt cause this they just left it, and it occured as irish farmers exported their food out of the country, short of seizing all of the farmers produce and redistributing it in a way impossible in the 1800's as the government was much more limited than now, there wasnt much they could do.
Bangladesh famine - Slightly related to the japanese invasion of Burma that was going on at the time.
Genocide - didnt happen under Britian, never was an effort to wipe out any people / races.
Aparthid - Didnt happen under british rule, literally stopped when the british took over from the dutch and re instituted when the british left.
You have to remember that British hegemony should be compared to everyone else at the time not to what we can do now. I'm not saying that there was nothing bad that happened under british rule, but in general it was better than what replaced it.
Fun fact: my kindergarten teacher was Dan Gurney’s brother. I met Dan once when he came to our class and read a bit of his book. We all got lil dinotopia pins

Fun Fact: the reason Zippo seems so much smarter than the other dinosaurs is because his species, Troodon (or Stenonychosaurus based on the current classification) had one of the largest brains in proportion to its body of any dinosaur. Also, the reason Zippo lives among the herbivores despite being closely related to “raptor” dinosaurs is that Troodon are thought to have been omnivores, eating both meat and plants.
This is probably the most interesting thin Hallmark has ever had their name on it im being honest.

I’ve always had this childhood memory of a talking dinosaur in a library, but had absolutely no idea what show or movie it came from. I gradually let it fade to the back of my mind over the years, but it’s wild to finally know what it was.

I think it has this, and the WB channel's "Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World" pilot episode on it.

to be fair stenonychosaurus was lumped into the genus troodon for the better half of two decades or so, and this was the 90s/early 00s
Technically Troodon is a defunct species, because the original first specimen was nothing but a (not all that special) tooth.
At least him living with the herbivores makes sense considering Stenonychosaurus is thought to have been omnivorous.

I discovered this movie as a kid when my step-dad picked it up from the local video shop. I loved it as a kid and we ended up renting the TV show too. I don't think I've ever heard anyone else talk about them, so thank you.

Fun facts: There are still dinosaurs alive today, as birds are dinosaurs. It also makes birds technically reptiles. Also, there are no sea dinosaurs, things like the plesiosaurus and mosasaurs are marine reptiles. However, dinosaurs like the Spinosaurus were believed to be semi-aquatic like a crocodile.

You didn’t mention that the Plane crashed in the beginning because the Dad purposely went to sleep mere moments after handing over the controls his son who had never flown a plane before.
Ok I have to say something, Karl is not weird for not wanting to stay there at the start. He lost his dad and is in an unfamiliar strange place, his brother just accepting it within one second and not even seeming to care makes him look like a sociopath detached from things. Like David is way more weird about things when they get there than Karl.
Him trusting the evil dude also makes sense because HE'S THE ONLY ONE TREATING KARL'S COMPLETELY NORMAL APPREHENSION LIKE A NORMAL THING IT IS!

My grandma gave me this as a kid alongside the 3rd Jurassic Park movie.
It came on 2 discs and was laid out less like a tv show and more like.. A movie spread out into 2 discs.
Around the same time, I saw an animated version of Dinotopia [The Quest for The Ruby Sunstone] which was kind of like a sequel, since 26 is much older.
This stuff was weird.
God damn that "And he's f**king traumatized" bit had be howling of laughter.
Brought me right back to the good old golden age of review videos between 2010-2014. Beautifully executed.

I watched this when I was REALLY little but I vividly remember having a crush on Zippo
this is one of those weird things I watched every second of as kid, but then never saw or heard anything about it ever again after it aired, making it feel like a dream
when i was 10 years old in 2004, i was in a childrens hospital for 3 months. there was a TV/videogame cart that was shared and one night i managed to snag it for the whole night. ALL there was to watch on it was the entire Dinotopia series. not knowing a single thing about it, i stayed up all night in a haze watching this bizarre early 2000s cgi fever dream. so cool to see a video many years later here about it!!

I watched this movie probably a million times when I was younger. I absolutely loved it. I’m 23 now and a month ago I suddenly remembered it and rewatched it. Still love it to this day.

Man I loved dinotopia as a kid. It still has a place in my heart. As a kid most a of the off-putting stuff went over my head and now as an adult I just look past it.

Oh my god I remember my mom showing this to me when I was little! I remember being so angry at the pterodactyl instructor for being so strict about success toward David, who has a severe fear of heights. Zippo was also my absolute favorite. As someone who just didn't really get social interactions and didn't make a lot of friends growing up, I related to him quite a lot.
Dinotopia was one of the best shows ever. The books were even better, with beautiful art too.

I totally remembered this series and often recommended it to people only to remember by minute 45 just how cheesy it was...
But to 10 year old me, it was the absolute best.
"Trying to figure out if he's a triceratops or a tricerabottom." may be the funniest Billiam line of all time.

Okay, i watched this series as an afternoon movie. Me and my mother were just LAZY, and we watched it all in one sitting because it was what was in TV. It was... an experience... one we remember from time to time today, heck i remembered it on New Year's Eve.
