      Medium doze of LSD and MDMA combined, then a lot of trust in the surroundings to completely let go. That is about what religious experience is at best. But you can't get there without committing to a higher power and that is kind of an obstacle. It is a high, lots of dopamine and serotonin combined with one can only be said to be a mild stroke. With drugs, the physical experience is much stronger.
      Not worth it. Spiritual experiences are different and come in all shapes, those you have already had. The difference is the non existence of omnipotent God as a character, as depicted in religious texts. Marveling the miracles of nature in person is spiritual experience and it has a huge therapeutic value.

      First heard this on the tail end of an acid trip that taught me a lot about myself, in a very true and eye opening way. It wasn't pleasant to learn, but it helped me try to find the motivation to find a way to get out of where I am. I am still trying, but it isn't easy. This song brings me to tears every time I hear it, especially the solo.

  • @txmoney
    @txmoney 6 ปีที่แล้ว +501

    In order to fully understand the song, you need to listen to the entire album.
    The Wall is a concept album. EVERY song is integral to fully understand the story. No single track should be interpreted on its own.
    Yes, Pink Floyd is deep. Every album tells a story. In fact, every song blends into the next and was meant to be listened on the original LP. It’s unfortunate that in the digital age, the album songs have a noticeable break between songs. There WERE NEVER any breaks between songs. The best example of an album of continuous music with no breaks is Dark Side of the Moon.
    Dark Side of the Moon (one of the greatest albums of all time) turned The Floyd from a “psychedelic” band into something much greater.
    BTW...watch the Pulse concert video of Comfortably Numb. It will change your life.

    When Roger Waters was a child, he spent many hours looking at the sea. He waited in vain for his father to return from the Second World War. His father had died in 1944 in Italy, when Roger was only a few months old.
    For that reason the song says: "A distant ship's smoke on the horizon." You are only coming through in. Your lips move but I can not hear what you're saying "
    Because Roger thought that every ship on the horizon was the ship his father would come to.

    "This guy's a very smart writer.." YES, Roger Waters is!
    You definitely need to hear ALL of Pink Floyd's The Wall, you get a better picture of this song that way. Pink Floyd writes albums, not songs. If they were heavier, they would be Tool.
    The song is written in two voices - major key for Pink, minor key for the doctor.
    Pink overdosed from self-pity, self-loathing, and the news his wife had been cheating on him, had injured himself, and drank and took too much. He barricaded himself in his hotel room, and his staff broke down the door, administered drugs to get him back on stage.
    This is not unusual in the music industry, especially back in the 70's when this was written. Doctors were hired by the record company to keep the band up when they needed to be. Colonel Tom Parker, who managed Elvis, was notorious for giving Elvis drugs to get him up or down.
    Pink is reminiscing during this, because he has lost contact with reality, becoming a consummate rock star/fascist on stage, while his psyche is trapped behind the wall he's build for himself, screaming to get out.
    Fear builds walls.

      Or Flat (sigh) Earthers.
      Here's how you know Roger wrote most of the lyrics and a great big chunk of their music: He talked about growing up without a dad and the war that robbed him of a father a lot. Gilmour still had two parents when he joined Pink Floyd. You can't write about that kind of loss without having gone through it - it wouldn't even occur to you to try.
      Plus, Roger's still writing stuff - his best was Amused To Death which is still relevant (unfortunately) almost 30 years later. I didn't care for his new album, mostly because it doesn't seem to have a connective thread, and feels hastily assembled. I liked what he was trying to do, but the way he went about it seems off.
      And I don't agree with Israel on it's policies. They're committing genocide on the Palestinians like the Nazis did to them. They're keeping the cycle of violence alive - an eye for an eye makes the world blind. We shouldn't be financing a country (at all!) that wants to commit genocide.
      Roger is against violence, against war - no matter who starts it.

    I'm really late to the party but it's gonna bother me if I don't write this. Don't mind me!
    Roger Waters, who basically wrote this album, has stated that Comfortably Numb is not about drugs (as in being numb from them). The Wall is a huge concept album about Pink (a rock star) who begins to build an emotional "wall" (the album name) around him out of all the bad stuff that has happened to him: his father being killed in war, an overprotective mother, bullying teachers, falling relationships etc. He describes them as bricks in the wall (Another Brick in the Wall, Parts 1-3)
    At this point in the album Pink has finished the wall inside him and he falls into this catatonic state of not caring about anything and basically just being inside his own thought without any interaction to the world outside. He is sitting in the dressing room and the manager brings a doctor in to give him a fix in order to get him out of this state so he can perform. This changes Pinks personality drastically which brings the album to the "Show" part of the album.
    This is my favourite album of all time which has themes about mental illness, the record industry, isolation and facing your fears, among other things. I highly recommend this album to everyone.

      @wolvesrule6608 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Roger Waters also said that it was about a similarity between when he was sick as a child and the way he felt then with the way he felt after he got sick on tour. In order to perform, the backstage doctor gave him a really strong drug that made him feel the same way as when he was a kid. In a way, it's about drugs, in a way, it's not.

      Ummm....... this song was written after a show in Philly in 1977 during the Animals tour. Waters was too sick to go on stage, when they brought in a doctor who gave him something to "get him through the show"....... please.....at least look at the interviews done before commenting.

    Sori's reaction at the end is everyones reaction listening to this song. Its such a relaxing and triping song.
    I once listened to the whole The Wall album on the beach at night and I took a trip with myself.
    And thats the whole point of Pink Floyd.
    This sing is about a fever he had once that he allucinated. Some people say it was because of a drup trip but I believe he wouldve said so if it was.
    The live video is something else. Its really a show, the psychedelic use of the lights substitute the use of drugs for those who don't use it lol
    Great reaction guys.

  • @krytenLister
    @krytenLister 6 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    You need to watch the film to understand it. At this point, Pink's demons have peaked and he has trashed his hotel room and got so wasted that he is almost totally unresponsive. He's so wasted he can't make it to the concert. So his manager gets the medic to give him something to get him back on his feet again so that he can do the gig. The whole film is about fame and insecurity,and the way the music industry treats its stars as commodities until they self destruct. The great thing about the film is that there is minimal speaking by the actors and the story is almost totally told with music. Overall The Wall tells the story of a child becoming a man and a famous rock star and how all his life experiences have slowly F**ked him up and to protect himself mentally and emotionally, he has been gradually cutting himself off from the world by building The Wall around himself.

    Love you guys. Glad to see Pink Floyd continuing to affect lives. She reminds me of my Anna!

    The next Pink Floyd should be the entire "Dark Side of the Moon" album.
    But if you only do one song from the album, do "Time".

      Would like to see a reaction from the earlier stuff like Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun or Echoes as well. Love that stuff the most.

      So many good songs and albums but if I had to choose only 1, Echoes definitely.

    I'm not surprised Sori liked this song. Just like Tool , Pink Floyd is music that you experience and not just listen to.

    First off.... Sori with her eyes closed, empty house, pulsating bass, right into the solo.... I don't need to elaborate, just watch it. We all bow to you Vin.
    txmoney nails it with the simply put "No single track should be interpreted on its own" UNTIL you listen from start to finish because it will come full circle for you.

    Best reaction! She sighed as soon the song was over and that sigh said everything!
