The intro: the song before this on the album comes to a sudden fade into that AM radio effect. Then you hear what sounds like someone flipping through the stations, eventually settling on that acoustic guitar intro.
The person listening to the radio then begins to play along. You can even hear them tuning a string.
Then it fades into the full song.
The wind outro brings in the next track.
This whole album desreves a start to finish listen.

@@scott_meyer Absolutely not. A "walk on part in a war" is about being a sheep and following the the status quo of being programmed by the powers that be. For me, “Did you exchange a walk-on part in the war for a lead role in a cage”, refers to how Syd Barrett withdrew from the outside world and internalised himself in to his own world.

Yes the song is about one of their former band members as many of their songs are about him. He had a bad case schizophrenia and did a lot of drugs and eventually was unable to participate in the band or a normal life anymore and a lot of their work talks about the beginning of their early success and how he just went downhill and they reflect on that a lot. His name was Syd Barrett. He is seen by many as a savant, extremely creative and original until he couldn't really function anymore.

    • @paulflewitt5599
      @paulflewitt5599 4 ปีที่แล้ว

No it isn't. Wish You Were Here is about Waters' feelings toward the dynamic change within the band. Only Shine On You Crazy Diamond is directly about Syd.
I think the confusion here comes from the fact that Waters dedicated the performance of the song to Syd and absent friends at the Live8 reunion. He did this because Syd died not long before that show took place.

  • @shspurs1342

I’m two months late to this conversation, but I randomly stumbled upon this video today and enjoyed listening to your analysis. For someone totally listening for the first time, your comments were rather insightful.
This song is about the band’s former lead singer and songwriter, Syd Barrett. The band watched Syd slowly succumb to mental illness and his use of LSD probably helped that process along. Eventually, Syd was too unstable to continue playing and touring, so they replaced him with David Gilmore. But the band loved Syd until the day he died. In fact, even though Syd no longer played in the band, they made a point of continuing to share all band royalties with him after his departure to ensure he was taken care of until his death.
So the opening lyrics are relating to Syd’s mental state toward the end of their relationship and the chorus expresses their desire for his continued presence, even though everyone knows (even Syd knew) it cannot be.

The lyrics have many layers. They're about Syd Barrett, their original singer / song writer. It's also about the connection they were losing as a band.
But ultimately it can be about anyone you miss, for any reasons.

Although this song often evokes thoughts of Syd Barret, Waters has said the lyrics were not specifically written about him. It is about the general idea of absence and how that can impact different aspects of life (relationships, family, business, etc.). It began with that 12-string riff Gilmour came up with, which he said had a haunting feel to it. One of the best collaborations between Gilmour and Waters.

For the full context, you should listen to the entire album in one sitting. It is a post card to a lost friend - Syd Barrett. Syd was the founder of the band who developed mental problems and was forced out before they became hugely successful. The songs on the album update Syd on what the band has gone through since he left, recognize Syd's vision as the foundation of their success, and express how much they miss him. If you consider this context when you listen, every lyric will make sense. You started off on the right track, but then wandered off into an abyss.

Wish You Were Here [the album] is a bookend to Dark Side of the Moon. I always saw WYWH as a tender letter to Syd Barrett from the band and the whole album is a tribute and a farewell to Syd

This is what it is saying: "are you alive, or are you just numb to the 'life' experience? Wake up and live life to the full" See the lines: "Did you trade... a walk on part in a war for a lead role in a cage?"

Still watching lol. Vin, its pretty amazing how dead on close you are to it.
This album was their follow up to Dark Side Of The Moon. An album that put them over the top in every single way.
So when they went back to the studio, they were already at at loss..."how do we possibly follow that up?"
Roger Waters is on record as saying that was the beginning of the end for the band.
Even though they did several more amazing albums after Dark Side, they had reached that pinacle they'd struggled for years to reach and now they were beginning to drift apart.
The band was feeling alienated from their audience, and from each other.
It eventually led to The Wall, which was really the last album by them as a "complete" band.

This was the bands tribute, one of many, to Syd Barrett. Syd was founding member and guitarrista who lost all his mental faculties due to use of LSD.

Pink F can force you to think, if you you let them. Pink F has helped me think in times in my life when I didn't want to. I work in mental health. Pink F is more of a therapist to me, than I could ever hope to be for someone else.

I'm curious if Vin is wearing his headphones with the sound on the wrong side. Typically, the right ear is where the cord goes, and when Sori pointed to her right ear, he pointed to his left. Or I could be totally tripping :)

In a documentary Roger Waters stated “Can you free yourself enough to experience the reality of life as it goes on” but in the end he stats it’s really up to the individual on how they interpret the song.
So I find this interesting how people interpret this song either sad in missing someone and wishing they were there.
In the lyrics *Swimming in a fish bowl year after year, Running over the same old ground* I interpret people can get into a daily routine and once in a while it would be nice to break free and take some time off.
Whenever I listen to this song it like closing my eyes and forgetting about work and worries and living in a “Wish You Were Here” moment.
If I’m up at a bar with a beer enjoying some live music I call my buddy and say “Wish You Were Here”.

1st as an OGT from 92 from the 1st ep I can say Floyd and Tool are 2 bands in their own genre. So many similarities from the psychedelic aspect & unique time signatures to the raw and dark lyrics about simplistic yet common issues/feelings we all feel but most of us won't admit/mention. Tool is a modern Pink Floyd w-out the politics!
And with that being said please do a reaction to "sweat" from Tool Opiate 1st song from the 1st album

I always liked how it starts with him listening to the intro on the radio then he starts to play along over the the top of the tune. It gives it an authentic feel.
