I own a 996 .1 with turbo twist wheels. It’s a great car. I don’t listen to all the keyboard warriors telling you what can go wrong with them. The 3.4 doesn’t have IMS issues anyway unless it is abused and that’s the owners fault not the cars. As for the headlights well that just personal taste. There is one thing it makes the 996 more individual than all the other models. Well done Magnus for promoting these much underrated cars!
It's destined to go up in price anyway. They all do. When the poor can no longer afford the other generations, not even with their life savings. Suddenly songs of the underappreciated 996 will start, and the rich will attach absurd price tags to their examples, rust and 90's electronics be damned.
@@brewswillis7294 You are right! I don’t think all the keyboard Warriors who have never owned one going on and on about it helps the situation and it has falsely kept values relatively low. Good news for us ordinary punters though😀
Ex 1998 C2 owner here, ims went, engine rebuild, then developed bore scoring! I now have an F Type which is great but obviously I’m still watching these videos 😁
OMG you are the first guy I’ve heard with literally exactly the same opinion on those headlamps as me. Nobody ever moaned about how the GT1 looks.... and now I own a mk1 996 with a manual box and I love it. 😍
As a 996 owner, I really appreciate his take on them as well. No, I like the 993 headlamps better, but my car still looks great. And, FAR better performance and reliability than a 993. Haters will be just that. And, that is fine. I drive mine, 105k on the clock, and have hardly done anything to it in 3 years of ownership. Magnus has an appreciation for the car more than the lights or water cooled variation in comparison to older 911's. This is appreciated. Thanks for sharing this!
At 19 I bought a rough 71 914, rebuilt the engine, replaced rusted suspension under battery box, painted. Drove it all over Washington State. Sold it due to not a practical family car. 1995 bought a 79 SC, really enjoyed the car lots of compliments. 5yr later I sold it and bought a 22 ft boat for family and friends( I enjoyed Puget Sound boating still do). 2020 bought my 3rd Porsche 99 996 Carrera Cab. Love this car, they can talk all the smack they want this car performs great. Lots of beautiful scenery in Washington and top down fun. 996 is a bargain!!!! Enjoy!!!! Ron in Tacoma
997, 991, 992, cayenne, macan should all bow very deeply like a Japanese businessman before the almighty 996 because without her they’d never had seen the light of day. 996 being the most sold ever 911 model saved Porsche from bankruptcy. Amen to Pinky Lai’s amazing genius for designing such uniquely beautiful headlights. My old but gorgeous 2003 C4S gets more attention than those soulless 991 and 2’s wherever I park her...
Love the 996 Le mans racing lights. The 996 designer was way ahead of many of us. Look at other super cars today. The 996 has great porsche heritage style and grit a beautiful awesome design.
996.1 are the best looking Porsche’s ever. The GT1 headlights are epic and will be much sought after. I don’t own a.1 but I proudly own a .2 C4S with the X51 package. Great torque throughout the rev range. Awesome street ride. Wish I had room in the garage for a $5K 996.1.
My feelings exactly. I have have 1999 996.1 with an aftermarket GT3 aero kit and purchased it about 5 years ago because no one seemed to want it. I really like the fried egg and rear tail light with amber indicators something you don't see very often on the Gen 1 anymore.
Exactly, there is no better *car on the market for 20k. I love mine. People complement it all the time and i saved 60k. Plastic headlights don't effect the performance!
I own a 2004 996.2 Carrera - 137K miles, CA car - I've owned it three years. Well sorted and IMS, RMS replaced proactively since I needed to do the clutch anyway. No longer a daily driver, but have NEVER regretted my purchase and its a dream come true to own one.
The gen1 lights have aged well and I love them both. Light analogue cars that are razor sharp. My mate has a 992 GTS and he couldn't shake me in the Twisties. He's an advanced driver as well and was deploying all his power. That's what an extra 300kg does. Mine is a Gen2 C2 and I adore it.
For sure agree on Gen 1 996 headlights. Much sleeker and beautiful. What is not to like about them? Personally I think the Gen 2 version headlights are a little over the top. Too stylized and hard to look at. They call them "facelift" and I can see why. I prefer Gen 1 996 appearance or 997.
I recently purchased a generation 2 Porsche 996 2.3ltr Carrera cabriolet with hard top and also has split rim alloys. I purchased it from a garage I've been using for 30 yrs for servicing my cars and it replaced a Jguar XJS that I had owned for over 30 yrs abd to be honest I wish I had bought a 996 years ago. First registered in 2003 and as only done 49K miles. It as also had the IMS bearing and No. 6 big end plus other minor bits sorted. (invoice for the work included in the papers). I don't care what the bar room so called experts have to say about the model and its headlights. Usually they don't own a Porsche and they tend to forget it is a bigger car than the air cooled model and also has a generous 320 BHP. Far more power than I shall ever use.
Owned a 996.2 Carrera 4 for nearly 3 years and only had A/O separator issues. It was used as my daily and drove really well. Totally agree with Magnus though, I much prefer the look of the 996.1 to the facelift cars.. Definitely will be a future classic much like the 964 was once hated and now everyone seems to want 1..
I came close to selling my 996.1 a few times, but could never do it. I have always dreamed of having a 911 since i was a kid. It is my first Porsche and I love it. Headlights and all.
My 996 is my second Porsche. I had a 968 before. They’re surprisingly similar from the driver’s seat, but the 911’s handling is on another level, by a big margin.
Agreed. It was the car from need for speed! It is in yellow on the cover. I have owned my 996 for about a year now. Love it now just as much as I did when i was a kid playing it on TV.
Took my 996.2 cab to FL Keys this week … great fun to drive .. I do garage and cover but really want to just use it … very much interested in good suspension upgrades for my non-track car .. I want to take longer road trips around FL & maybe GA …
Your are the best Magnus, you do not follow forum blabla...you just follow your own way. I like that very much. By the way I prefer also gen1 996 headlight. And no IMS problem with GT, these are Mezger engines. Congrats for your 996 acquisitions.
Mr. Walker, as I am 69 years old and having some major lung damage from early days working for the Army Corps of Engineers. I would love for you to carry on with my old '99 Gen 1 911 996. This car is perfect at this time. It is a Cabriolet w/ new top and hydraulics.. Please see the former input from me. I would love to leave it to my nephews, but they wouldn't appreciate it. I know that You would. I just want to get the best money for my wife so she don't have to deal with it when I'm gone.
It's time the 996 was properly recognised. It was a massive turning point for Porsche swapping to water cooled and Porsche could have dramatically failed if it wasn't for the success of this model. The first completely redesigned 911 took Porsche from 15k to 30k sales a year. The "ugly duckling" was more like a Phoenix.
I love the very first generation 996 with the proper fried egg headlights with the amber indicators, side indicators and rear amber indicators. Very hard to find nowadays because they've all been swapped out.
That argument about the headlights on the GT1 suddenly made me look at the 996 generation very differently. I used to own a gen 2 996 GT3 at one time but had to sell due to finances and rather regret I found myself in that position.
You are the man! What a great collection. Getting a little tired of hearing all these great things about the 996. My head's getting a little big because I feel like a genius because I just bought a 81,000 mi 6-speed 02 in perfect condition with the IMs done and a new clutch. And even though I think I paid a lot maybe I really didn't. And it goes very nicely with my 986 S6 speed. I would love to visit your collection. Thanks for the video
That 99 Red Aero Kit is amazing. I’m of the group that the 997 is the homely 911 chassis. I think the 996 is endlessly better looking. More rounded structure. Better looking interior. Sure, the headlights aren’t as sharp as a 997. But that’s splitting hairs. Plus the wheels are classic Porsche. 997 wheels are hideous.
I have owned a 996 Carrera, and 996 Turbo. Currently own a modded 6 speed 997 Turbo, and a Macan Turbo. Personally, I love my Black on Black 997 Turbo. The 997 and 996 Turbos have the same chassis. Having owned two 996 models I enjoyed them, but moved on. My 997 Turbo gets a lot of attention at our local coffee and cars meets. Most people seem to like the looks, but I don’t care whether they like it, or not. With around 600 horsepower and a stupid amount of torque, it is really fun to drive.
I cannot understand why a Porsche enthusiast would want to drive the prices up on the only affordable 911 for the younger generation. We need kids to get hooked on the brand for it to survive.
Because they can be flipped, lol. It was all about "old school air-cooled cool" mythology until he cleared out his inventory. Looks like early watercooled 911s and ~2000's BMWs are next on his flipping hit-list. Plenty of rich people out there waiting for someone cool to tell them what to like: he'll put some stickers and wheels on these 996's and make some pretentious lifestyle videos and they'll be $45k cars soon :P IDK if he'll be able to manipulate the prices on 996's and 997's super effectively-- they were produced in much larger quantities than the aircooled cars, but you never know. If you want a 996 or 997, buy one now. They're very nice cars for the money as long as you can afford to maintain them.
That would be nice. I'd leave mine alone and it would become even more rare. Just wait it out. There will come a time when people want the Porsche that looks different. The ugly duckling so to speak will have its day.
People are already replacing the front wings with 997 parts to get the headlights changed out. Seems silly to spend the money rather than just buy a 997. My 996 C4s tiptronic is a fun drive and I like the whole package just fine from factory.
