😮Hello Patrick, nice repair man...well done!! One advice : the next time you take the impellor pump off,try to get that broken bolt out ( drill out) and replace it. Probably you cant use the old thread because it is worn out but maybe you can drill a bit of bigger hole and tap new thread or just use a bolt with a nut ( if it fits). Best wishes from the Netherlands
Yes! That is exactly what I was thinking of doing, just worried about doing it on the only working water pump we had at the moment. I think we will likely get a spare, then I will work on fixing this one like you said, drilling it out, and then rethreading the hole. But that is something I have yet to do and dont have the tools for just yet 🙂 Thank you so much for the advice and checking out this weeks video! 🎉⛵
Great Job you two! Playing catch-up after picking up our boat and sailing to Trinidad. We beat Beryl by a week and had about 100 plus boats come from Grenada down to Trinidad. Boat jobs are endless, even on newer boats, so don't get disheartened! Unfortunately, we are having to haul out next week as we were hit by another vessel during the night, the Saturday Beryl went through. They promptly left without accepting responsibility 😞 Now we get to do fiberglass and gelcoat work. Keep it going!!
Congrats on getting your boat! That is amazing! I know it has been quite a long time in the process. So glad to hear you made it out of the way of Beryl, the destruction from that, it really is heart breaking. So sorry to hear about the hit and run! Hopefully the haul out is smooth and the damage is minimal! If there is anything we can do to help just give us a shout!
Yes your strainer (with the cap off) should flood the boat with the top of it being right at the water line or below. To find your water line inside the boat.. take a long clear hose, fill it with water. Keeping it plugging at both ends with fingers put one end in the water outside the boat. Bring other end down low in the boat and remove you finger. If water comes out (good) lift the hose until it stops, the water line in the hose is your waterline.
Thank you for the explanation on how to find the water line! Really clever! I was trying to think about how we would do that when I thought we might have to drop it, but I think at this point the location is okay, just need to fix that last air leak and should be good to go. Until then, it seems to be working 98% correctly, with water coming out every single time right at start up, so not going to fidget with it too much 🙂 We really appreciate you taking the time to comment and join us on another adventure! 🎉⛵

Great video! Pipefitter here..... teflon is fine, and not used to create the seal on your threaded connections. It is a lubricating tape to allow you to thread more. The tappered threads are what make the seal, the teflon helps you thread it in. You can use different pastes instead but teflon is used in heavy industrial under much hotter temps and much, much higher pressues so its fine.

New harbors and new experiences. What a life. Good job on the pump fix. Definately get a second pump. The most common failure is the shaft seal behind the impellor and it is much easier to swap pumps than try to fix the seal while you are moving. Also, Just for info, Yanmar makes another pump that fits that bracket that has 1/2 inch hose barbs. It is typical on the 2 cyl. Engines but is also used on some 3 cyl. A little lower flow rate but I have run them on my 3cyl engines without any overheat issues.
Thank you! Woohoo you’re sailing! Great episode from the water pump, sails up, no seasickness and yes, Patrick’s sucking lol. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. Safe travels till next week! 🤗
Just little areas are weather and wave terror! It should only get easier with time, but also learning how to time them better :) Thank you so much for being with us on this adventure! 🎉⛵
Hi Patrick. You did a great job with the repair but the air bubbles are coming from the pump seal. Vaseline is not a sealant. It’s only a lubricant. When you get a chance and to avoid future problems you’ll need to replace the pump seal and use a silicone gasket sealer if you can’t get the broken screw out. It will leak again if you don’t. Everything else you did was great and you used your own ingenuity to get through it. You’ll find most sailors aren’t great mechanics, fiberglass composite technicians, or sailmakers. What they are good at is working through problems and learning from their experiences. Good luck!
100% My plan is to get a newer water pump to replace the current one, and then rebuild this one back into a better working condition to have as a spare. I was just worried about trying to drill it out and breaking the only water pump we had in the moment. Just need to get to a place where we can stay somewhere long enough to get things shipped! Hey guys! Happy Sunday from Texas!! I loved this episode because I’m not at all mechanically inclined yet I’m fascinated by people that can just read up on how something works, then fix it! Well done, Patrick. 🙌🏻 Please forgive the cheeky nature of this comment, but some of Patrick’s commentary while fixing the tubes and whatnot could be used as voiceover for a spicy cartoon, lol. 😂 10:04 adorable 🥰 When yall were leaving Florida I thought I was watching Deadliest Catch with that chop! 13:46 Michaela your home office sunset view is STUNNING. I’m so happy to see you both settling in and finding a comfortable rhythm. (Even though you’re still having seasickness at night 😬) Omg the 👶🏻🐬!! It is always something, but you’re crushing it all! Thanks for another great video!
Happy Sunday Jody! 😂 It's so true! It's one of those things where you say something and then realize how it sounded, except since we are often talking to cameras we catch it in it's hilarity 😂 The Florida Inlets are too wild for us! We always tried to time them the best we could, but still sometimes would just get caught in the worst of it! Now we get why there are all of those facebook posts of people trying and failing to get in and out of the popular Miami inlets! We are certainly getting more comfortable, even just being comfortable with the things being a little uncomfortable :) The baby dolphins were indeed too much :) Thank you as always for being here with us, we really appreciate it ❤⛵🎉
Heat the hose w heat gun, or lighter, even a hairdryer and it will fit a little larger area very well. And have pretty much a water tight seal. Of course gotta clamp so don't blow off under pressure! Anyways just a thought..
Ooooooh! I just was talking to another sailor who mentioned the same thing! Seems like a very good tip, and we did buy a heat gun before we took off! Thanks for taking the time to impart some wisdom, this boat is filled with hoses 😂 so I am sure it will really come it handy. We really appreciate you being here with us week after week, always happy to see your name pop up 😊⛵🎉
I feel like sailing is so easy the first 80% of just having your sails out the right way, and then the last 20% is the mastery of getting every single knot that you can out of what wind you have with the perfect trim 🙂 We are certainly getting better, but I imagine it is going to be a long process to get there. Looking forward to it though 🙂 Always appreciate you joining us on an adventure Aussie Pete! Hope you are doing well! 🎉⛵
We have the Eartec UL2S and they are incredible! Highly recommend them to anyone who is sailing with a partner, makes communication so much better 🙂 Thank you so much for being on this journey with us 🎉⛵
Pat, the one that is stripped, can you put a screw with a nut on the other side, hard to me to tell. I think your pump and all the components should be below the water line, so the raw water system is always flooded with water. You should not have to prime it, and if you keep starting the engine with the pump dry, you will rip the impeller apart.
Unfortunately no! I have tried all of the conventional advice for getting a screw out, but they are 7 mm screws so are just so tiny to work with. I think the answer is going to be drill it out and rethread. I think I would have to move the through hull if I wanted it all to be below the water line, so for now will just take the win of it pulling water correctly every time now. Will have to keep an eye on the impeller fins though, and will definitely be picking up another pump to swap out so I can rebuild this one and keep it as a spare. Thanks for taking the time to give some wisdom! Will see how things end up working out! 🎉⛵
@@patrickandmichaela When i worked as a locksmith we ezeouted screws down to m4, the trick is a really good sharp centre punch to get a good start. The weld on of a nut that mechanics & shops use is much faster and easier.
Depends on where the wind is coming from I think? But in general sails work a little differently than you would somewhat think, but I am not going to pretend to be out here explaining it well. It's more of a foil system (like airplane wings) than a parachute effect, but it may depend on the wind angle and such. We definitely are still figuring things out, but often get another .5 - 1 knots by putting out the stay sail.
The worst part is at the end because land is the enemy, not the salvation. Boats sail best in the middle of the water just like airplanes fly best in the middle of the air. One should always avoid the edges.
😂 Yes! Exactly! You get it 😂 Always much easier just being out in the water as opposed to figuring out how to get reasonably close to land, water world when!? Thank you for the comment, it made us laugh 🙂 ⛵🎉
@@patrickandmichaela I love your channel. You remind me always that I'm not quite as smart as I seem. I've got a few more years on you but still have a lot to learn and not much time to learn it. I wish I could have been doing what you two are doing when I was your age.
Why buy 2 feet of hose when you can get 7 feet instead! Lol (Spares are always handy) Good to see Patrick getting the hose fixed and the pump issues resolved. Bet you're both pleased to get that sorted out! Great also to see that seasickness didn't rear its ugly head either in the way that it's done in the past and I'm properly chuffed (English expression - means "pleased") for you both that you're settling so well into the sailing life. Lovely to see you had some company on the way across as well. I've got to say, I'm really proud of you both for your longest sail yet and it's great to be witness of your journey. How's the tinned mackerel coming along by the way? Finished it yet? How long before you do your own fishing?
The nice part about the consignment shop is they just eyeball the hose and give you a super low price 😂 The cashier looked at me, looked at the hose, looked up and said 5 dollars, i nodded, and now we have plenty of nice double braided hose for, well, i am sure some other hose on this boat is also half inch 🙂 We are so pleased it has been working so far with minimal issues 🙂 Thank you so much for such kind words, I know it may not seem like that big of a thing, but comments like yours really do mean the world to us. It has certainly been hard at times, but knowing we have so many wonderful people here backing us, following our journey. Just, thank you! We have been working our way through some of the mackerel, but we have actually found even more cans, so I imagine we will be eating it for quite a long time 😂 We will definitely be doing our own fishing soon, just happened across a spear from a lovely couple who is selling their boat and gifted it to us, so time to bust out our fishing pole or hop in the water and see what we can catch 🙂🎉⛵
@@patrickandmichaela That's great that you've been gifted a spear of all things from some fellow sailors! I also love how relaxed the consignment shop is when pricing things up for you, presumably they 'recognise' certain folks as sailors rather than non-sailors and the sailors get a discount perhaps? Glad to hear you're making your way through the mackerel. Hopefully you haven't got sick of it all yet (as that would be ironic that you're sick of fish and your biggest food source will be the sea when you get more into your journey lol) and that you're finding your ability to provision has proved to be effective so far :)
Generally I would agree! Depends on how thick your hose clamps are though, I think often when people double up they can miss the actual hard portion and end up having the second clamp just cut into the hose. When we get to a store and can get some thinner hose clamps will definitely look into it! Thanks for the advice! 🎉⛵
Be careful wearing headphones, you want to be able to hear the sounds around you especially when something is breaking or going wrong, hard to hear with music playing in your ears, just a suggestion
We generally will leave on ear phone off when we are just sitting there so that we can listen for anything new or interesting going on. There are also settings that make the background noise go through to the headphones easier, but still a bit risky for our tastes! Definitely a fair warning! Thanks for taking the time to comment, we always appreciate people caring about safety! 🎉⛵
Yes, very high on the list to do, but would rather have a spare water pump in my hands before I drill the old screw out. I think that is the only way it is coming out at this point 😐

😊 Thank you so much for the kind words! We are so glad to hear you are enjoying our videos! We are out here trying our best and putting all of the best and worst of it out there! We appreciate you being here with us! 🎉⛵
I love watching y’all’s growth and confidence grow with each sail and episode ! ❤
Thank you so much for joining us on this adventure! We know we have so far to go still, but honestly are so proud at how much weve learned over the past 6 months 🙂 We appreciate you being here ⛵🎉
Yeah there's always something. BOAT-Bring Out Another Thousand 😃. Another great video, love watching these new sailors, how they cope etc. I'm hoping one day I'll be a newbie sailor. Take care.
Exactly! Definitely not a thing you buy to save money 😂 Thank you so much for the kind words, if we can do it, you certainly can as well! Hope to see you on the water one day! 🎉⛵
Woohoo you’re sailing! Great episode from the water pump, sails up, no seasickness and yes, Patrick’s sucking lol. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. Safe travels till next week! 🤗
😂😂😂 That last one had us rolling 😂 Thank you so much for joining us, we are so happy to have you along with us 🎉⛵
"Inlets are the worst"! No truer words ever spoken! I get antsy every time ;) You all are doing GREAT!
Thanks so much for the advice, we really appreciate having you here on this adventure with us! 🎉🙂⛵
Getting so much more comfortable. Great job at sticking with it. Enjoy your videos
So glad to hear you enjoy them! We are so grateful to have you on this journey with us 🎉⛵
Love the dolphins!!! What an amazing journey!!!
The dolphins were just so amazing! It was always a dream of ours to get to experience them swimming with the boat like that ❤ Thanks as always for being here with us, we miss you!
Congrats on the water pump fix! Dolphins are always amazing. Great edit. Thanks for sharing. Look forward to seeing what adventures are next.
Thank you so much! Yeah, seeing animals in their natural habitat really does not get old. Thank you for being on this adventure with us week after week 🎉⛵
Oh how I needed this video after the few days I've had. Much love guys. And thank you for another episode and cheering this guy up with a huge smile. I def needed it today.
Sorry to hear about a rough couple of days, we certainly have been there (especially lately)! Glad to hear our video could spark some joy in your life, hope things get better soon! Always appreciate having you here Kourt!
Great effort team . . So pleased things are getting easier
Your both looking more at ease . .
Take care .
Bye from NZ👋🍻🇳🇿twa
It's funny that a mostly uneventful sail and fixing a motor can feel like quite the triumph, well, at least after so many mishaps 😂 Hope you are doing well friend! Take care ⛵🍻🎉👋
You two are seriously impressive and it's a pleasure to watch your journey! Fair winds!
Thank you so much for the kind words! It is a pleasure that we get to share the journey with kind folks like yourself 🙂 We appreciate you being here! 🎉⛵
Great video both, so happy to your progress and confidence grow ❤
Thank you so much for the kind words 😊 We appreciate having you here with us 🎉⛵
Nice one! You guys are doing great.
We really appreciate having you here with us, thank you for the kind words! ⛵🎉🙂
Hey guys! Happy Sunday from Texas!! I loved this episode because I’m not at all mechanically inclined yet I’m fascinated by people that can just read up on how something works, then fix it! Well done, Patrick. 🙌🏻
Please forgive the cheeky nature of this comment, but some of Patrick’s commentary while fixing the tubes and whatnot could be used as voiceover for a spicy cartoon, lol. 😂
10:04 adorable 🥰
When yall were leaving Florida I thought I was watching Deadliest Catch with that chop!
13:46 Michaela your home office sunset view is STUNNING. I’m so happy to see you both settling in and finding a comfortable rhythm. (Even though you’re still having seasickness at night 😬)
Omg the 👶🏻🐬!!
It is always something, but you’re crushing it all! Thanks for another great video!
Happy Sunday Jody! 😂 It's so true! It's one of those things where you say something and then realize how it sounded, except since we are often talking to cameras we catch it in it's hilarity 😂
The Florida Inlets are too wild for us! We always tried to time them the best we could, but still sometimes would just get caught in the worst of it! Now we get why there are all of those facebook posts of people trying and failing to get in and out of the popular Miami inlets!
We are certainly getting more comfortable, even just being comfortable with the things being a little uncomfortable :)
The baby dolphins were indeed too much :) Thank you as always for being here with us, we really appreciate it ❤⛵🎉
Step by step you can go far. Good job
Exactly. Just have to keep taking things day by day and problem by problem :) Thanks for watching! ⛵🎉
Well done, both of you! Enjoy Charleston! It’s lovely!
Thank you so much! Charleston is indeed a lovely city 😊 We really appreciate you being here with us! ⛵🎉
In Charleston there is a seafood place called Hymans Seafood. It is really good.
Thank you for the recommendation! We unfortunately had to make our way more North already, but marked it on google maps for the next time we are back!
You guys are starting to make it look easy.
I am sure we will find a way to make it look very difficult soon enough 😂 Thank you watching and always being so encouraging! 🎉⛵
We really appreciate you being here with us week after week, always happy to see your name pop up 😊⛵🎉
I enjoy your channel..Good luck with everything.
We are so glad to here it, thank you so much for watching! 🎉⛵🙂
You are doing awesome! Great video, can't wait for the next!
Thank you so much for the kind words! We really appreciate having you on this journey with us 🎉⛵🙂
Use the oil from the side of your nose after sweating. It’s slick, and all natural!
😂😂😂 There you go! Using the heat to your advantage 😂 Thanks so much for joining us on another adventure 🎉⛵
Well done guys, just work on trimming the sails and you will be seasoned sailers. Aussie Pete 😊
Loving your videos and watching your confidence grow with each journey. What type of headsets are you both using to communicate?
We have the Eartec UL2S and they are incredible! Highly recommend them to anyone who is sailing with a partner, makes communication so much better 🙂 Thank you so much for being on this journey with us 🎉⛵
Another great video. Good Job!
Appreciate the kind words! We really appreciate having you here 😊⛵🎉
Pat, the one that is stripped, can you put a screw with a nut on the other side, hard to me to tell.
Take it to an engineering shop they will get it out for you either by welding a nut on top or with eziouts.
Good idea! I have a couple easy outs but the screw is so small I don't quite think it will work!
@@patrickandmichaela When i worked as a locksmith we ezeouted screws down to m4, the trick is a really good sharp centre punch to get a good start. The weld on of a nut that mechanics & shops use is much faster and easier.
well done
Thank you! It's not always easy, but we are figuring it out! ⛵🎉
Curious as to why the 2 head sails out, seems one is just blocking the wind from the other
Depends on where the wind is coming from I think?
I wish I could have been doing what you two are doing when I was your age.
great video :D
So glad to hear you enjoyed it! Thank you for being here with us 😃⛵🎉
Why buy 2 feet of hose when you can get 7 feet instead! Lol (Spares are always handy)
Good to see Patrick getting the hose fixed and the pump issues resolved.
The nice part about the consignment shop is they just eyeball the hose and give you a super low price 😂 The cashier looked at me, looked at the hose, looked up and said 5 dollars, i nodded, and now we have plenty of nice double braided hose for, well, i am sure some other hose on this boat is also half inch 🙂
We are so pleased it has been working so far with minimal issues 🙂
Thank you so much for such kind words, I know it may not seem like that big of a thing, but comments like yours really do mean the world to us.
An O-ring kit should be considered as an essential item for a boat
100% we now have an O-ring kit where you can make custom sized ones, as well as a box full of tons of spares in many sizes.
Two is one. One is none... Double up hose clamps.
@@patrickandmichaela where are you guys now?
We are in North Carolina!
You definitely need to remove that broken bolt and replace it
Yes, very high on the list to do, but would rather have a spare water pump in my hands before I drill the old screw out. I think that is the only way it is coming out at this point 😐
I said you'd get there
Thank you for supporting us on this journey! It is only just the beginning, but it is wild how far we have come 🙂
Do you guys have an autopilot?
Yes! We do have an auto pilot! We hand steer some times, but could not imagine taking on a very long journey without one! Thanks for watching 🎉⛵
❤❤❤
😊❤⛵
Dude,. Drill out the hole and tap a new larger bolt or just drill it out and put a nut and a bolt through it.
Just put a longer bolt same size with a nut on the back side.
Yeah, that seems like the thing to do, just worried about it being the only water pump
Drill that stripped hole out and put a little nut and bolt on it 👍👌
Yes, that seems to be the way to go about it! Once we land somewhere for a minute will have to give it a go! Thanks for the tip! ⛵🎉🙂
@@patrickandmichaela I love the channel I've been binge watching catching up
And I'm sorry for butting in you guys are doing an amazing job
