I HIGHLY recommend getting a water softener AND a shower head filter installed. My parents have both at their home and when I lived with them, my hair and skin were so healthy, balanced and easy to manage. Plus, I barely used any product. It's also so much easier to keep sinks, faucets, dishes, laundry, etc., clean since there's almost no buildup. Crying in severe hard water build up even though my home has a water softening system for the house. The water in my area is so hard that the system can only do so much. I couldn’t figure out for so long why my hairs health was diminishing so much even though I hadn’t changed my routine really. I moved to a new city and in the last 3 years my hairs health had plummeted. Found out it’s because the hard water. My home city didn’t have hard water. Glad I know now.
I moved to NC and have had the worst time ever with hard water. I have natural red hair, and read the chemical reaction between the hard water and red hair makes it worse. I actually have a build up on my scalp that looks like dandruff. I wash my hair every other day and it's constantly itchy and even starts to have a bad smell. I've lived in 4 other states and never had this happen before. And when I go on vacation, my hair is back to normal. It's truely been a nightmare 😫
When my hair gets like this I first clarify and then snip of the uneven ends. That usually solves the issue. When I lived in our old house, the water was much softer and I always had such voluminous shiny curls. But here the water is so hard, and it's a struggle to maintain my hair.
Great video! I use kinky curly come clean shampoo for chelating. I use it about once a month to stay ahead of the buildup. It took me so long to figure out what was going on!!
@@Amour84 Yes, definitely. When it starts getting limp, and protein doesn't fix it, I know it's time to chelate. So I use the chelating shampoo and then deep condition and it bounces back to normal!
@@kryki_cha6206 The phytic acid is a natural chelating, but it’s not as effective as disoduim etda and the other ingredients she listed at 9:57. Those are more effective than a natural chelating. So, you won’t get the best effect with kinky come clean, but it’s doable just not the best
I'm surprised to just be learning about chelating shampoos. I know how frustrating hard water is to deal with. My parent's house had fairly hard water, so I was always fighting frizz and tangles. Did a big move and using all of the same products, my hair was SO much softer just because of the water! Unfortunately I did another move, and I'm back to harder water, though not as bad as previously, but I'll definitely have to give chelating shampoo a try.
Ooh I love that AG mask! I've been using a lot of AG products recently, they have tons of amazing stylers 💜💜 Also, quick tip: whenever you refresh or just wet your hair after getting out the shower, only use distilled water in your spray bottle! I came across that tip somewhere a long time ago (don't remember from who) & I think it's a great idea! The last thing you want to do is mist your hair in hard water buildup! Especially on top of stylers that may already be causing buildup of their own
@@tenaciousone4721 except the mask, I use a lot of their stylers! There's curl trigger, which is a curl enhancing spray that contains magnesium sulfate (curl enhancer that helps with shrinkage) as like the 2nd or 3rd ingredient, AG curl fresh definer (styling cream w/light hold), plastique (a very runny volumizing gel), liquid effects (runny gel), re:coil (curl cream), mousse gel (mousse that holds like a gel), & their volumizing foam. I actually just got my hands on their other curl cream cashed "details", but haven't had the chance to use it yet. Every styler I've tried I've at least liked it & some are my favorites (liquid effects & curl trigger, though I also greatly like using plastique with those 2). 💜
As someone who washed their hair in a sink for years… this stuff wrecked my hair big time- always greasy no matter what, matted, unmanageably flat, frizzy and falling out routinely, causing my hairline to recede substantially.
This is why I HATE renting. I live in a county that has the highest percentage hard water in the country and since I don’t own the house I’m not just gonna start tearing into the bathroom installing shower heads but best believe once I have my own house I’m gonna get the the whole 9. Hope this Amazon shampoo works 🤞🏼
You can replace the shower head with a shower head filter. They are about $30 on Amazon. They when you move place the old shower head back on and take your filtered shower head with you!
I like to double cleanse whenever I use a really moisturizing shampoo - I feel like it gives a nice cleanse (not clarifying, of course, but a really nice cleanse) while maintaining all the moisturizing properties. Sometimes my hair feels dry but I also know I used a lot of product during the last washday, or if I refreshed at all (I usually don't refresh).
I had replied to your one IG story from when you first tried that Malibu shampoo and I said how I've been using their hard water wellness shampoo. At times I didn't think it was helping but I just tried it again recently and it made such a difference! The conditioner that goes with it does have silicones though, just so you know. I think their reasoning is to prevent more hard water buildup from sticking to your hair, which does kind of make sense to me, so I do use it when I use that shampoo. I clarify often, so it will get removed eventually, and I don't think I mind a little bit of silicones.
Oh dear, got dizzy from all the products and systems etc etc in the video and comments. Anyone got a natural solution? We collect rainwater in a barrel alsoaybe apple cider vinegar since its also a high pH? We don't have most of the products you mention.
Anyone here from Europe or even Germany? Whenever I google chelating shampoo I only get recommended clarifying shampoos.. it's really frustrating ^^' so if anyone can give me a hint for a chelating shampoo that I can find at my local drugstore that would be really cool thx
My scalp is always itchy, dry, red and my hair is like staw and it's very brittle and is falling out and never feels clean after I shower and I have moved from a place that has hard well water to yet another place that has hard well water. I am getting to the point of wanting to just shave all my hair off and wear a wig. I have literally tried every filter and softener on the market to install on my shower head. Help!!!
Bounce curls detox mask removes hard water buildup, & if you follow it with their ayurvedic DC, the DC is supposed to help protect against hard water buildup AND is formulated to moisturize hair that already has hard water buildup (which is good if you only have the one thing & are waiting to get a chelating shampoo. Also innersense shampoo (the color one anyways, but possibly all of them) have trisodium ethylenediamine disuccinate which is also a chelating ingredient, and is in the top third of ingredients. I used to struggle with hard water buildup until I began using the innersense shampoo in my regular rotation, and then I use the bounce curl detox mask for when I have any type of buildup along with an extra itchy scalp.
Does anyone know why my ends have so much breakage and fairy knots? My hair is virgin, never dyed it, straightened it and have curled it literally once in my life. I dont know why but I can break my ends super easily and there is visible split ends everywhere. Help, please!
Hi Gina Marie, thank you so very much for this video! My hair is 2B very high porosity, and I need to use argan oil to soften it. I generally only have shampoo day once a month and use cowash. I took the Prose quiz and found out my area has hard water. What do you think about using a chelating shampoo followed by cowash? Ive had a water softener system at home for a year. When I travel my hair got disgusting. Just like you describe it x1000. My scalp was extremely oily and my hair felt dry and dirty no matter how many times I washed. What can I do to prevent this from happening when I travel? My hair did fine when I lived with my parents but now when I go to visit it goes crazy.
I guess shampoos are simply made with the assumption that all water is soft. It makes more sense for that assumption to be reversed, so that vital ingredients would include chemicals that fight against hard water damage. Would simplify shampoo shopping 🛍 🤔.
@Gena Marie Right. I am convinced that soft water is a thing of the good old past, or maybe even a figment of my imagination. I had great hair, and was stopped and complimented on it so much. 😏😮💨
Thanks Gena!! I was wondering if you could do a video on sun protection for curly hair! Is there "sunscreen" for hair? Which ones can you use for curly hair? Are there any alternatives? What's the science (why does my hair change colour and get damaged by the sun)!?
There’s a great spray-on oil by Eva NYC that smells great and it helps protect against UV rays! I also use it for detangling before washing my hair and it’s a great light weight oil
I went to my stylist and she gave me a spiral perm after she applied the perm solution I was shocked the towel was purple looking she said I had iron buildup n my hair. I pay for city water I thought the water company was supposed to put salts and stuff to remove all the deposits and they just got another raise as well.I think I will start catching rain water in a bucket and use that on wash day. If I boil a kettle of sink water on stove top does that remove the iron deposit from the water? What is a good drugstore shampoo to remove iron from my hair? Would these types of shampoo cause my perm to fall out? Thank you for your videos.
I live in a bad area of Alaska with bad water.. stinks like rotten eggs lol. Thanks for the video. I can’t get a filter or a softener. I’ll probably wash my hair with better water from now on lol

Thank you so much! My house def has hard water but I didn’t know it was y my hair sucked. The top half of my hair just will not curl no mater what I do even though the bottom layer has lots of ringlets.
Hi Gena, thank you for the video tutorial 🙏 questions: do we rinse we conditioner before applying the shampoo? can we use a t shirt if we don’t have a heat cap, or is the shower cap enough? once again, thank you Gena Marie ….
Isnt it better to use the deep conditioner/mask after the shampoo and not the normal conditioner?, makes more sense, cause the cuticles are raised after the shampoo..if not, your are open the cuticles with the shampoo, closing it with conditioner and opening again with the heating cap🫣
Hi, thank u for just existing. Honestly, I mean it, i have short thin curly hair and u give me so much confidence that i am not alone in this world (a bit dramatic but sometimes one feels this way lol) I have just 2 things to ask from u: 1/ could u show us some different hairstyles that can work for our hair? 2/ could u please use Cantu for natural hair leavein cream and cowash and tell us ur review? Thank u soooo much 💖💖 much love from middle east🙊💖
Save your money; put a quarter teaspoon of baking soda in your daily shampoo. I live in San Antonio which has some of the hardest water in the country. I do this once a month.
Could be both! I would first determine if you have hard water in your home. If not, it's likely just product buildup. Low porosity hair is prone to buildup because it doesn't absorb products easily and they sit on the surface.
My sister got a water a water softener because their water was hard, and soft water is AWFUL! It doesn't matter how long you rinse or how hard you scrub it NEVER feels like the shampoo or body wash is rinsed off. Eventually you just have to give up and hope it's all gone because you can stand there forever and your hair will still feel like it has product in it.

Is your hair doing better because of the shampoo?
@@Amour84 Yes, definitely. When it starts getting limp, and protein doesn't fix it, I know it's time to chelate. So I use the chelating shampoo and then deep condition and it bounces back to normal!
Does that shampoo have a chelating agent?
@@Maristiger15 I think it's the phytic acid that provides the chelating ability. I'm not 100% sure though. 😅
@@kryki_cha6206 The phytic acid is a natural chelating, but it’s not as effective as disoduim etda and the other ingredients she listed at 9:57. Those are more effective than a natural chelating. So, you won’t get the best effect with kinky come clean, but it’s doable just not the best
Malibu hair treatment is worth every penny!!!!
I used Malibu treatment and saw zero benefits 😢
I'm surprised to just be learning about chelating shampoos. I know how frustrating hard water is to deal with. My parent's house had fairly hard water, so I was always fighting frizz and tangles. Did a big move and using all of the same products, my hair was SO much softer just because of the water! Unfortunately I did another move, and I'm back to harder water, though not as bad as previously, but I'll definitely have to give chelating shampoo a try.
Ooh I love that AG mask! I've been using a lot of AG products recently, they have tons of amazing stylers 💜💜
Also, quick tip: whenever you refresh or just wet your hair after getting out the shower, only use distilled water in your spray bottle! I came across that tip somewhere a long time ago (don't remember from who) & I think it's a great idea! The last thing you want to do is mist your hair in hard water buildup! Especially on top of stylers that may already be causing buildup of their own
Great tip!
What are the AG products please, and thank you
@@tenaciousone4721 except the mask, I use a lot of their stylers! 💜
I live in the desert (SW) Thank you so much for this information. It’s gold!!
Malibu c or Ion treatment BEFORE you color your hair will make a HUGE difference to y'all
I like to double cleanse whenever I use a really moisturizing shampoo - I feel like it gives a nice cleanse (not clarifying, of course, but a really nice cleanse) while maintaining all the moisturizing properties. Sometimes my hair feels dry but I also know I used a lot of product during the last washday, or if I refreshed at all (I usually don't refresh).
you’re an angel thank you much
Very informative video thank you so much Gena!!💖
I had replied to your one IG story from when you first tried that Malibu shampoo and I said how I've been using their hard water wellness shampoo. At times I didn't think it was helping but I just tried it again recently and it made such a difference! The conditioner that goes with it does have silicones though, just so you know. I think their reasoning is to prevent more hard water buildup from sticking to your hair, which does kind of make sense to me, so I do use it when I use that shampoo. I clarify often, so it will get removed eventually, and I don't think I mind a little bit of silicones.
Also, I believe the hard water wellness shampoo has a small amount of protein. Can't remember if the conditioner does.
Your hair is so beautiful!! thank you for the videos♥️ also your pink sweater is so pretty ~ where did you get it?
Thank you! It's from Kohl's, and is old so I don't think its available anymore 😔
Oh dear, got dizzy from all the products and systems etc etc in the video and comments. Anyone got a natural solution? We collect rainwater in a barrel alsoaybe apple cider vinegar since its also a high pH? We don't have most of the products you mention.
Thanks! Very thorough & helpful.
Great informational video! I can't wait to see your review on the AG line. I have only tried the Curl Fresh Definer, but I absolutely love it!
Anyone here from Europe or even Germany? Whenever I google chelating shampoo I only get recommended clarifying shampoos.. it's really frustrating ^^' so if anyone can give me a hint for a chelating shampoo that I can find at my local drugstore that would be really cool thx
I'm in the UK and I use the Boots Expert Chelating shampoo once a month if the helps. We have really hard water.
Help!!!
How long does hard water build-up last when using apple cider vinegar rinse??
I love both of those from BounceCurl!
Does anyone know why my ends have so much breakage and fairy knots? My hair is virgin, never dyed it, straightened it and have curled it literally once in my life. I dont know why but I can break my ends super easily and there is visible split ends everywhere. Help, please!
We have a softener but we have such high iron content that we still end up with build up
I think Pattern Beauty has a clarifying shampoo that’s also good for hard water
Hey… Enjoyed your video! You did not mention anything regarding color treated hair. Do you have any information to share?
How about the fact that you have well water as an indicator that you have hard water?! That's usually a good sign that you have hard water!
Thank you in advance for anyone who knows or can answer this question. 🌹♥️🥰
I've tried the malibu c shampoo once as I also have hard water build up too, but it matted my hair so bad I didn't use it again. I have no idea what I am doing wrong and why my hair never feels smooth after letting it rinse through my hair😭
Have u tried coating ur hair (not near ur scalp) with conditioner or a mask first and then shampooing?? This is KEY for me since I get the same problem if I skip this step:)
Would apple cider vinegar do the job?
I read that it gently clarifies doesn't remove chlorine and hard water build up.
It didn’t work for me, I’d love an easy natural remedy though
You have very beautiful hair is it naturally curly
Great info! Thank you! ☺️ I suspect I have hard water, and my hair shows some symptoms.. so I just ordered both a hard water test kit and the Malibu C hard water wellness shampoo, so I have it ready for my next wash day, just in case! 😄
Yeah you can still use it for a deep cleanse even if you don't have true hard water!
@@GenaMarie great! I suspect that my water here might be at least borderline hard water, like how you described your water over there. But I'll find out today (I ordered from Amazon with the one day shipping)! 😊
Can you use a chelating shampoo on dyed hair? OR will it lift out your color?
I’m in KY and I have filters in my bathrooms, I don’t drink it, or use the ice from the fridge.
How about L'Oreal EverPure Clarify shampoo? It says on the front that it's for hard water exposure and removes buildup, but it doesn't contain any EDTA.... (It's half the price and readily available is why I ask)
This cap! I have low porosity hair as well!! Thank you
Ive had a water softener system at home for a year.
I live in the desert and we have pretty bad hard water. Hopefully this helps.
What about an itchy scalp? Every since we stop refilling our soft water, I’ve been having to wash with hard water but my scalp has been so itchy!
I’ve heard that can happen too!
So update, I finally refilled the salt for the soft water in the house and guess what! My itchy scalp stopped and my hair is incredibly soft again!!!
Hi 😊
Thank you for this video! So so helpful.
Im wondering if you can share the name of the shower head softener.
The link doesnt work anymore 😢
I guess shampoos are simply made with the assumption that all water is soft. It makes more sense for that assumption to be reversed, so that vital ingredients would include chemicals that fight against hard water damage. Would simplify shampoo shopping 🛍 🤔.
So true. I wish more shampoos were compatible with hard water when majority of the country has it!
@Gena Marie Right. I am convinced that soft water is a thing of the good old past, or maybe even a figment of my imagination. I had great hair, and was stopped and complimented on it so much. 😏😮💨
Some high quality shampoos don’t lather.Thyroid problems menopause ,digestive problems and low protein etc can cause hair problems.
Thanks Gena!! I was wondering if you could do a video on sun protection for curly hair!
Is there "sunscreen" for hair? Which ones can you use for curly hair? Are there any alternatives? What's the science (why does my hair change colour and get damaged by the sun)!?
Can we use sunscreen? What are the ingredients that actually help protect from UV? 🤓
Check out manes by Mell!
I’ve just tried L’Oréal metal detox shampoo and my hair dresser uses the treatment before colouring I feel it helps 😊 they also do a mask
Thank you for the great info.
Will the Curlsmith Detox Kit help with Hard Water buildup?
I live in a bad area of Alaska with bad water.. stinks like rotten eggs lol. Thanks for the video. I can’t get a filter or a softener. I’ll probably wash my hair with better water from now on lol
Thank you for your information
How often do you recommend doing this?
I mentioned in the "maintenance" portion of the video towards the end how some may need to use a chelating shampoo 1-2 times per month, depending on how hard their water is
@@GenaMarie sorry, obviously missed that 🤦♀️
Where are your earrings from? They are very nice. Cheers.
Thank you so much! My house def has hard water but I didn’t know it was y my hair sucked. The top half of my hair just will not curl no mater what I do even though the bottom layer has lots of ringlets.
The Malibu C protein treatment is the bedt
Thanks nice video that come to the exactly good time :)
Hi Gena, thank you for the video tutorial 🙏 questions: do we rinse we conditioner before applying the shampoo? can we use a t shirt if we don’t have a heat cap, or is the shower cap enough? once again, thank you Gena Marie ….
Yes, you can rinse it out. You can try a shower cap! Heat mainly helped the deep conditioner penetrate more for those with low porosity hair
@@GenaMarie thank you Gena 🙏
When my curls start to sag like that, I know it’s time to replace the filter in my shower head.
Do not want to remove color?
Isnt it better to use the deep conditioner/mask after the shampoo and not the normal conditioner?, makes more sense, cause the cuticles are raised after the shampoo..if not, your are open the cuticles with the shampoo, closing it with conditioner and opening again with the heating cap🫣
Hi, thank u for just existing. Honestly, I mean it, i have short thin curly hair and u give me so much confidence that i am not alone in this world (a bit dramatic but sometimes one feels this way lol)
I have just 2 things to ask from u:
1/ could u show us some different hairstyles that can work for our hair?
2/ could u please use Cantu for natural hair leavein cream and cowash and tell us ur review?
Thank u soooo much 💖💖 much love from middle east🙊💖
Great video
A water softener are only for chlorine water right? What about calcium and minerals?
No, a water softener contains salt that works to treat calcium and magnesium which make water "hard"
Save your money; put a quarter teaspoon of baking soda in your daily shampoo. I live in San Antonio which has some of the hardest water in the country. I do this once a month.
Thank you!
I had thought baking soda can be damaging to the cuticle but I need to research it more
ACV, lemon juice, and bentonite clay is better than baking soda. Baking soda dries out your hair🙂
Thank you!
I would like to know if we could do this as well without it damaging your hair?
Since I put in my water filter in my shower, it's an absolute game changer.
which one do you use? I have been looking but there are so many to choose from
I have bought 5 different water filters and have not liked any of them! Which one did you buy?
Which one? I wana buy one
For men, hard water can initiate hair loss by causing scalpel build up
I prefer Malibu Hard WaterWellness, it’s a bit more gentle than Un Doo Goo.
Good to know!
I was worried it may be hard water, but now i think it's low porosity or product buildup...
Could be both! I would first determine if you have hard water in your home. If not, it's likely just product buildup. Low porosity hair is prone to buildup because it doesn't absorb products easily and they sit on the surface.
@@GenaMarie I see, thank you! I'll look into the water. Right now, I'm waiting for my hair to dry without any product in it, just like you recommended
Could you tell me about your eye shadow...I know it is off topic, but I have the brown hair, brown eyes thing as well. I really like your eye make-up.
Sure! I use this palette in “minimalist” rstyle.me/cz-n/ggaiiuvz6w
The warm shade on the bottom left is in my crease
@@GenaMarie Thanks, just ordered it!
Hard water has been destroying my hair for a year now. So much has fallen out. Thank you 🙏🏽 I hope my hair recovers soon
You look like a curly-haired Lauren Chen.
The resemblance is insanely uncanny 😄
My sister got a water a water softener because their water was hard, and soft water is AWFUL! It doesn't matter how long you rinse or how hard you scrub it NEVER feels like the shampoo or body wash is rinsed off. Eventually you just have to give up and hope it's all gone because you can stand there forever and your hair will still feel like it has product in it.
lol my hair hates hard water and loves soft water but i have friends who swear the exact opposite. body chemistry is crazy
Nice
Love from india

A pre-pew treatment?? 😂 What is that? you said I could do a pre-p_something so that I could prevent breakage? 😂😂 I’m just trying to fix my hair and I know nothing. 😂😂😂
Pre-Poo means that you use the treatment before you shampoo.
OOF! All of this!!
pH 9 is basic
yeah and our hair and skin is around a 5 pH, which is more acidic
Plastic on the head ain’t good
😂
