If you've never felt soft water, it's weird to get used to because it's almost like you rinsed the soap off your body but it still feels slippery. It's not inherently good or bad, just different. Where I live all well water is soft water.

Before I moved out of my parents about 3 1/2 years ago my mom said that her water was hard she thought and well water was bad. My skin was soo soft living there. I moved to a hard water apartment and its TERRIBLE- Im like mom... your well water was amazing

Depends on what area of skincare you're interested in. For me:
Real-world reasonableness and chemistry understanding? Lab Muffin Beauty Science.
Very dry acne-prone skin, Asian beauty (and some western), serums and other steps outside of the bare basics, and interesting ingredients outside of primarily actives? I like Alice in the Rabbit Hole.
Cruelty-free vegan alternatives? (and general stuff) Cassandra Bankson.
Various interesting Japanese products? Tina Tanaka Harris.
As far as straight to the point, nigh no-thrills, safe (sometimes excessively so), back to basics, Dermatology-recommended information... absolutely Dr Dray, she's awesome in this area.

After I get out of the shower, I do a final rinse on my facial skin. I put distilled water (cheap and mineral free) into a spray bottle. I spray my face until wet, then spray a cotton pad and gently wipe my face. Works great!

a final rinse w/ distilled bottled water doesn't get rid of the scum that's already precipitated. you need to rinse with mildly acidic water to dissolve the scum. or select shampoos that are mildly acidic, whose formulation already accounts for the slight alkalinity of most local water sources.

I live in South America and the water is really hard, after a month you can see the build up in faucets. From an early age I realized bathing would make my skin itchy and have rashes, and product availability is really limited. Switching to baby stuff was really a game changer and my hair and body looks really healthy.

I would recommend buying a filter for your shower, these don't last much because hard water begins to build up here too but it is good for at least 6 months.

Oh that would be perfect for us since we are renting. Do you have a recommendation? I was looking at the bead ones that are shower heads, but they seem gimmicky? And theres one called Aqua something.. that is metal and contains a legit filter inside that you hook between your original shower head and the pipe.

I'm pretty sure my (diagnosed by my primary doctor) contact dermatitis/eczema all this time is just from hard water and taking way too hot of showers. I didn’t even know this was a thing until I moved for a bit from the Midlands of England to London in the southeast and it was dreadful! I’ve never had such bad hair and skin (my KP was at its worse - so, so itchy) and you’d just see all this limescale completely encrusted in the kettle (didn’t realise it was something I needed to check until I noticed bits of white stuff in my tea). The filters you can buy are expensive to replace every few months but definitely worth it when the water is that hard!

I'm feeling guilty about sitting (or should I say showering) in the comfy 15%! I was born and raised in MA..and never had any water issues. However, I lived in Idaho for about a year once. What a difference in that horrible water! It drove my skin crazy with itch. But the worst part was my hair. I'm mildly embarrassed to admit buying 4 gallons of spring water per week to wash my hair with in the sink! Your hair looks super shiny Dr. Dray, the nail polish is everything, and your eyes seen particularly twinkly today! Happy new week talk to you soon!

In fact it was voted the best water for a bubble bath 😂 and there's a new campaign encouraging everyone to top up water bottles with tap water because it's so safe. Also you don’t have synthetic fluoride - derived from discharge of fertilizer and aluminum industry added to 85% of water supplier here in the US. It is law to state derivative/source of the fluoride of state water suppliers by county/city here in the US, but nobody I know is aware when I bring it up (I live in CA). San Diego County fought it for years but lost recently and it’s in their water too now 😥

I’m so late to this video, but I am in Michigan and over the past 9 months have suffered an insane amount of hair loss and breakage due to our hard water. My hair is past my butt so you can imagine this has been quite devastating, my once medium density hair now insanely thin. I was using using biolage during those 9 months. I wish I’d never touched it. I recently bought Wella’s fusionplex line, the shampoo, conditioner, and the intense hair mask. During my first shampoo with it, even while rinsing the shampoo from my hair I could feel how much smoother my hair was already. Seriously I’m in love, I cannot express how good this stuff is. My husband came home from work and out of nowhere "omg your hair looks better than it has all year, did you do something different? It’s shiny and smooth again" (again, from 1 wash, I didn’t even use the hair mask) the fact he noticed when he doesn’t even notice a shade change in my hair when I color it lol that should tell you everything. Also ion (sold at Sallys beauty supply) has a shampoo formulated for hard water and it’s really good too!

Malibu C brand makes hard water wellness shampoo + conditioner that is AMAZING. They also make in salon treatments called “Malibu crystal gel” that we can do as stylists to help remove the build up. I’ve literally seen green and rust colored buildup come off blonde hair. It immediately changes the texture of the hair for the better! It’s amazing the difference between clarifying shampoo (removing product buildup) and cheating shampoo (removing mineral deposits) ! Anyone struggling look them up, and/or ask your stylist about the products !

This was a much needed video! Thanks Dr. Dray! I'm an American who lives in London and I've been wondering why the same skincare I used in the US is not working for me here, more specifically why it's pilling up when I apply everything in the morning. It doesn't happen so much at night because I double cleanse but in the morning i'm just washing my face with water. I think the stuff I use at night is not acting well with the hard water and gets glued to my skin. So when I put on my morning skincare it's reacting to what was left from the evening routine. I guess this means I need to use micellar water in the mornings to remove the skincare from previous night which is not ideal but must be done.

Feeling fortunate to be in the 15% "soft water club", in Melbourne (Australia (not...Florida) region. Especially because I have lightened blonde hair, which I definitely don't want to go brassy.
Thankfully, my hair doesn't turn green with chlorine either; however I am going to make a solution for my skin & hair, to neutralise the chlorine from the local swimming pool water. I will add the correct proportion of vitamin C powder to distilled water in a spray bottle. It will be more convenient for me to spray my hair, face and body with that after swimming and then showering and doing my skincare routine at home.

So happy you made this video!! I’m in Florida for almost a year doing travel nursing. My skin has been extremely dry and itchy and I couldn’t figure out why until people at work said Florida has hard water! Do you recommend any facial moisturizers - currently using vanicream facial moisturizer and their facial wash.
    Thank you so much!

I moved from Chicago to Tampa a year ago. The water is very hard and wreaks havoc on my hair and skin 😩
I section my hair with clips before getting in the shower. Shampooing in sections helps decrease some of the tangles. And leave-in conditioner or spray is a must in order to brush through post-shower hair!

    Product Recommendation!!!!
    Color Wow “Dream Filter”.
    Pre-shampoo mineral remover.
Before we got the water softener install in our home in FL this helped my hair a lot. Those deposits alter your highlights along with giving your hair a straw like quality. Water softeners are the only way to safe your skin and hair. They protect your pipes. Bathrooms tubs and showers are a breeze to clean. Laundry comes out white and soft. Huge saving in body cleansers and cleaning products. Also Dr is so correct about skin conditions. When we lived in Phoenix ( another nasty water zone) installing the softener helped our son’s eczema.

Love this video Dr Dray! In Spain we also have hard water and its quality is awful where I live. I've had increasing skin problems and nothing was helping until I focused on the water and protecting my skin barrier and hidration, so with your suggestions I can better round up everything that I do! Should we dry the hard water after the shower and then apply moisturizer or use it on wet skin? I'm currently trying to figure this out... Oh, and is it normal if 1 layer of moisturizer isn't enough for the skin? Thank you so much and the jewelry and it's colors is super beautiful! Have a great week 🙂

That was so interesting. I moved to Iceland from Germany some years back and Here in Iceland the water apparently is super soft. I noticed that first with appliances like my kettle where there is no build up. Then when I went on holiday to Germany my hair would be absolutely horrible for about a week, itching scalp and all but that usually goes down again. Never thought it would affect the effectiveness of shampoo and skincare itself though

Yeah FL hard water is the worst! Also, it's prohibitively expensive to get a soft water system, so shower head systems work best for us.

I moved to Florida a few years ago and have awful scalp and hair issues that I never had before. it took me a few years to even realize that I was from the water but where I used to live had hard water also so I can definitely testify to it being way worse in Florida!! Water softeners are a must!!

    • @Criticalbeauty411

@@loriwise3177 it’s really bad here! After several years I’m even having scalp issues. I recently bought a shower head filter but for face washing I just wash my face normally and then spray with a filtered water spray before drying. I don’t know for sure that this alone stopped my acne but I know it didn’t hurt! Ideal would be to get a whole house filter but these are some things that might help more immediately. I hope it gets better!!

First! Hi Dr. Dray. I really appreciated your prescience last week 😆
I was planning to comment something about “alternatives to retinol that also boost collagen in the skin” and boom - it was the subject of last Tuesday’s video.
Similarly, I have been wondering and wanting to ask you about the behind-the-scenes calculus of your content creation, and you addressed some of that in last Saturday’s blog (batch recording, batch editing, hiring an editor vs. not, your channel when you first started vs. now, etc.).
    Thank you! ♥️
