Jc you do realize how lucky you are to have a partner, wife ,right hand worker, detailer, camera person i could keep going but all that in one person lucky dog !
people sometimes forget marriage is a partnership. she supports me, i support her. its a team effort. if someone is not part of the team, they are against it and have no place in my life.
You are exuding enthusiasm for this build. Cool COE. I hope you take it all the way fixing the cab rust and giving it a fresh coat and interior refresh. Might be great as a simple, short flatbed and maybe the hoist. If you are just doing this for yourself (for now!), then pimp this ride! This has the potential for TONS of content to look forward to.
I like where you’re going with this cabover. When you mention the 7.3 IDI that sounds nice but when you show us the steer frame with the Cummins and everything you mentioned is what you wanted. That’s it you already figured that out in your head how to do it. Again I love what you do with what you have on hand nothing is wasted.
I've got a couple of the loadstar coe (more narrow cab). I would like to make a hook lift for the multiple bed choices. Can't wait to see what combination you come up with.
Never drove one of those but I did drive one of the C model Fords with a roll-back on it delivering farm machinery right out of high-school. The one I drove was a gasser with a 5 and 2. Even had the fiberglass add-on sleeper box. You definitely are the first one to the wreck in one of those!
Ohh that looks like a good one. Those cabovers can tend to be bouncy but it be real cool to see an air ride front end on it but just a thought... either way you do great work ....
usps had many of them both straight and tractor with they used a heavy steel 30 ft trailers at least in phila 30 street main post office was very old and docks had lot of pillars trucks needed to maneuver around wonder what there using now i cannot imagine trying to get 45 ft conventional cab or 53 foot . the Phila gas works had theses too with about a 12 ft box great to maneuver in the old neighborhoods i always thought they were neat trucks. dad and i had step vans
Awesome to see you reposing on a cool build. Would love to see some details on the Allison swap for the manual transmission in terms or what’s needed. Love your building

J.C. I would love to come up to my old home state and work with you a bit. I am a machinist/welder/mechanic that has been turning, burning and wrenching since 1975. Automotive machine shop is what got me through Nashville Auto Diesel College. I did a few years with Caterpillar then some job shops finally doing my thing restoring high end antique cars. Then 13 years in the Air Force as an aircraft machinist and welder. Separated under disability and did the job shop thing again until I landed a shop supervisor position at a Mohawk carpet plant. There I designed, fabricated, assembled and tuned high productivity carpet looms. My boys and I were real terrors of the two acres of woods behind the house. There's only a couple of problems. @j.c.smithprojects that sounds great. But I ended up with a staph infection in my leg and almost didn't have a leg to stand on! I can joke now that it's healing but a few weeks back it was no laughing matter. Getting old sucks. My problem here is space, we had a series of storms come through and take out 3 of my sheds. So anything I wanted to keep dry had to go in the garage. Not the most ideal situation but that was when the legal trouble started. Lawyers love money, and the whole process took 5 years. So tired, broke with a terminally ill wife I have staggered into this year after her passing. I plan on getting to cleaning up and tossing stuff this fall but I have to wait for cooler weather. The combination of heat, sweat, rust, grinding dust, and dirt is the suspected cause of the infection. Other than that I really have nothing to keep me at home and pretty much come and go as I please as long as I stay in South Carolina. I watch all of your videos and get a huge amount of enjoyment from them. Let's see if the moon and stars align in the future and we can help each other out. I'm looking forward to see how the build on "old postal" goes. You have my curiosity up! Cheers Terry
man, you really have had a time. so sorry to hear all of that. i wish you all the best in the future. one things about us hitting bottom, the only way now is up!
8:02 this is why on all the trucks on my brother's farm, i've boxed (fiberglass wheel wells) all the rear wheels on all the trucks. Beds and box frames rot away so fast from the salt. Open wheels are not worth the price of admission when this is the result.
Every time I see you lift something off with the Gradall inside the shop I worry that you will hit the door but it’s probably much further away than it looks? 😀👍👍🇬🇧
@j.c.smithprojects I know it sounds odd, but I've always thought a cabover with a single stack looked good. Especially if you add the heat shield with either a gutted muffler or straight pipe. Super classic look! Wish I could come up and hangout and help or watch, but zero experience with large stuff. Haha
Maybe the uhaul isn’t a bad idea, you do frame stuff anyways, instead of shortening it, just have to add some front section to modify to the needs of the cab over? Or is that a bad idea?
At 4.04 min: "Can't get through a video without saying rust jacking!" Formerly it was: "I'm not a welder!" So now I guess that there must be a new T-shirt design coming!? 😁 ;-) Best regards, luck and health in particular.
Your videos are among my favorite on TH-cam. One of the reasons I like them is no music. This one has the music. Maybe you have no control over that. What a shame.
im not sure what is going in your life right now but i hope it gets better. i wish you could see how insulting this is, then perhaps you would rethink it. it takes hours upon hours to record, transfer, edit and upload each video. we do this to help others who may be doing the same thing as we are. we dont charge a members fee, no subscription, no donations. its free for you to watch. we do it for you to hopefully enjoy and possibly pick up something you may have not known. so when people complain about something i find so trivial, its is a huge insult to me and what i have invested in a video. especially when you could easily turn your volume down for the 2 minutes there was music in this 28 minute video. im not being a jerk here, just trying to show you the other side. 28 minutes of video and you focused on the 2 minutes that you yourself had control over to make yourself happy. again, i hope whatever is going on gets better.
too light for my plans. the new frame on this will need to be heavily modified to use this cab nicely. a traditional medium duty straight frame might be my best optiuon.
Did JC ever come out and say what the purpose will be? What will he use this truck for once it's completed. I played his words a few times and it isn't clear; a shop truck? Flatbed? rollback? how much weight does it need to carry? Any guesses anyone?
hey i know that you allready have your parts lined up but man a motorhome with out the home ill bet you could just set that cab on may be not as much content for you yube but lots of motorhomes needed cabs not homes im not a cabover fan as to putting way to many miles in the seat
3:03 YES YES!!! Throw those out! Gods i hate those wheels. They never do what they're supposed to do easiest, even on good units - which is to come apart easy. It's a freaking relic from the 1920's and they can't vanish from the face of this planet any faster!!! 10:36 funny to me how bad things from the early days of the vehicle world stayed with us, but the good things didn't. Back in the day (and you get this info from all "automobile" magazines and publications) the wood that was placed between the metal frame and the bed or box, was boiled in oil so as to not keep moisture and water in it and rot the frame. I know specifically why they don't do this anymore (aside from the hassle of boiling lumber that long) and it's fire hazard,... but let's face it, it's better than having your frame rot like that.
@@j.c.smithprojects OK. I'm surprised it's still around. As I recall they were slow, noisy, and difficult to get going in cold weather. But I guess they worked

That's going to be a cool truck. Have a great evening JC and Mrs Smith

This would be a great tip truck, to load up with scrap steel, as you obtain it.
Looking forward to this build.
22k gvw is light for hauling steel scrap to pay
Great video J.C.Smith got the makings for another interesting build. Looking forward to your next video stay safe Mr & Mrs J.C.Smith.
I'm 2 minutes into this video and I love it already. Stopped now to make sure I comment. Yes I am looking forward to this build!
Love COEs!! Great video!!
I always liked those medium duty COEs. This is gonna be a great build. 3406 CAT... 😅😅😅
Now this is a project up my street I love doing the old cabs new engine and running gear this will be cool JC
I used a truck just like that to deliver lumber when I worked at a lumber store just out of high school
I used to drive one of these things around Ventura, never did have to work on it but would have loved to.
Shopping list complete and didn't have to go far to find while still reducing vechiles on land.great video
Super cool project. Inspired and inspiring.
Id put the front axle on air ride while your at it
already in the the list of possibilities.
That bed has potential. Keep it
Gunna be such a sweet build!! 😁👍 I like the idea of the 6.7 Cummins J.C 👀
Should be a cool build,,,I learned to drive truck in that model,,in the early 80s I’m sure it had a 3208 cat 5 speed 2 speed axel
We used this model for garbage trucks in the 70’s and 80’s they first used Detroit 6V53’s and the DT 466
They also had triple chassis frames
What a great looking truck, this is going to be great to follow
Thank God for a gradall.
50 series Detroit would fit like a glove in there I think!
I've got a couple of the loadstar coe (more narrow cab). I would like to make a hook lift for the multiple bed choices. Can't wait to see what combination you come up with.
Love them 10.00 -20 biasplys!

yep. all the more reason to use a heavier frame. get some more protection in front of me.
I remember seeing those trucks on the TV show chips

we are going to entertain the possibility of front axle air ride.
Red engine runs well, found a solid frame

that would be cool with a flat bed and crane maybe hiab or so

Maybe pop it on a 5.9 cummins platform truck or 8.3 cummins from a bus body. The cab would probally fit pretty well on one
Love this
Maybe it's the cab over that does it but looks like the beginning of one of those trucks they build over seas.

agreed. little effort could save a lot later.
Axlent choice lol. I was rooting for a Cummins from the beginning.
I feel like that would spike a lot of interest at a show or meet.
that engine may have just got pushed aside. time will tell. look forward to having you in the shop again matt.
I’m looking forward to it also
I'd keep the manual transmission.
i have plans for this that would limit it if i used a manual.

Any reason you have been using that shop instead of the other one that equipped with all of your tooling?
better lighting , brighter, more room around the truck, makes better videos for you all.
