Joker noticed that the last time he mentioned Gambol's grandmother, Gambol was very angry. @John Nada Actually, wasn't there some fan theory that Ledger's Joker is a war veteran? Joker always makes his stories similar to those he’s talking to. He probably knows Gamble did not have a happy childhood and probably suffered abuse. So he picks at that and makes it into something terrifying to pull at his fears. The same with Rachel when he mentions him being in a couple etc. Secretly joker is very smart in how he talks. He understands interrogation and getting inside someones head (Batman). He can take your psyche and turn it on itself and thats what he tried to do to Gotham before Batman actually stopped him. But he did get Harvey to turn on himself and that in the end was all it took.
They straight up wrote a scene for him in an early draft of The Dark Knight Rises, but they decided to cut it out when he died. They figured, since the Joker wasn't going to come back in a substantial capacity anyway, why recast him?
0:27 in a way I respect Gambol for this bit. He doesn’t double cross the apparent murderers, rather keeps his word and offers them the $500000 reward he promised. This ties in with the mob bank manager saying “criminals in this town used to believe in things. Honour, respect.” Gambol is an example of that.
Yes but people like Gambol don't honor their word out of the goodness of their heart. In the criminal world news travels quickly and if you're the boss of an organization who's known for offering jobs then refusing to pay, or even worse killing the people hired to do the job? Good luck getting anyone to take your jobs the next time you try to hire anyone, people don't like to work for guys who are known for scamming their workers. Honesty and keeping to your word (at least in a public situation like this, backstabbing happens all the time when they can get away with it) is the cost of doing business in that world.
Like a social contract but for the underworld, in a way the seedy underbelly of society's fringes ironically mimics society itself - it's simply organization to progress the causes of a different interest group is all. And that's precisely why Joker resents and disdains it.
Yeah but you also have to think about the fact that, if 68,000,000 dollars was a "relatively small amount" for the mob, then a mere 500,000 was fucking PENNIES for Gambol to exchange for Joker's death.
Yeah I know. He would be one if not the biggest actor in the world. He'd be getting these dicaprio roles and what not. He'd definitely have his own Joker movie too. But in Heaven he definitely knows the impact he's had.

Theory: But what if the two background stories on how he got his scares are both true. That when his father put the blade in his mouth and said "let's put a smile on that face." His father didn't actually do it, but it left a scar for him mentally. And when his wife got scars all over her face, it gave him the idea to carve a smile on his own face since his wife kept telling him that he needed to smile more. His father gave him the scar mentally, and he physically gave himself the scar for his wife. Both stories are true.
I think he just adapts the story to his victims to intimidate them. He probably knew gamble had a bad childhood and used it against him. When he faced rachel he thinks of another story. You can even see him making up the story in this scene. My father was…… (thinks), a drinker
Zimmer said he wanted to make the score mirror the Joker's stories and mindset. Escalating the violin note to the point where it sounded like the string would break but never would.
The magic of Hans score is he made no heroic symphony batman is just 2 notes and joker is just 1 note. They both work so well and just enhanced the performance of the actors and made it so memorable.
Joe Murphy that’s a small gripe I have with this movie as it shys away from the violence that it almost is a distraction where you don’t know what’s going on? It didnt need to be ultra violent just need to see what’s happening. I mean what did he do to boss guy? Cut his cheek open? Would you really die straight away from that?? And what about when the lau guy was on top of the money and tied up he burned? Was he burned alive? We don’t know?!
steven lindsay According to Michale Jai White who plays Gambol, the character’s cheek is cut like the the Joker’s. I would read the script online to confirm, though.
Most would say the original Star Wars trilogy was superior - even with the weaker ROTJ. Also, the Godfather trilogy - even with the weaker Part III. Some other good trilogies on the lighter side of the movie studio > Toy Story and Naked Gun!!
The best thing of Joker was he controlled his anger and used it in a manipulating way.we can see that in the meeting scene and in interrogation scene as well.

@FoxRNG everything you just said is wrong just because Mark Hamill did a bunch of voice acting it doesn't mean anything because all he did was voice actor for the joker And in regards to Joaquin Phoenix while he was a good actor he did not play The joker better than Heath ledger. What made the joker so terrifying was he had no superpowers he was like a lot of dangerous people walking the streets of every city unnoticed but he could manipulate people with mind games he just wanted to watch the world burn
no, he was the one who put gotham together, remember all the crime bosses? with the mega ton of money? yeah, the Joker burned it all, and the white knight? he replaced him with someone even better, when he says he has "no plan" he's joking, like a joker, he's never serious with his words, though he's somehow always inhumane in ways, one with no backstory, we don't even know how he got his scars
What the Joker has is a talent for HUMINT (some have suggested that the character's backstory included time in the military). Just the mob boss meeting scene tells us a lot. First, apparently he had sussed out in advance where the meeting was going to be and hid inside before anyone else got there because goons were screening everybody at the door. We know he was close enough to be able to hear them talk before revealing himself because when he said "And the suit? It wasn't cheap..." he was reacting to Maroni's earlier comment that the Joker was a "two-bit whack job - wears a cheap purple suit and makeup" and he heard the continued conversation or he wouldn't have been in a position to tell the group that Lau's ("the television's") plan would result in Lau squealing because Lau was vulnerable to being picked up by Batman even if he were in Hong Kong. The Joker knew who Gambol was on sight, and knew enough about his personality to successfully bait him into trying to have the Joker brought to him dead or alive (why bother seeking out Gambol to knock him off when Gambol wants the Joker to come to him?). It's just an example of the storycraft brought into this movie.
The Joker's unpredictability and lack of remorse also added to his terrifying nature. He was willing to do anything to achieve his goals, no matter how cruel or inhumane. His maniacal laughter and twisted sense of humor only heightened his villainy, creating a sense of unease and fear in those who crossed his path. Additionally, his complex relationship with Batman, who often struggled with his own moral code when facing the Joker, added to the sense of dread surrounding the character. Overall, the Joker's lack of boundaries and his willingness to push the limits of sanity and morality made him one of the most terrifying villains in comic book history.
I watched this as a kid. Never felt too scared to watch it, it was just too epic. Now as an adult I can decipher and give more thought into this masterpiece
The actor that played Gambol said on an enterterview that his character wasn't supposed to die. They shot a scene where Joker just cut him leaving a smiling scar on the left side of his face. But they cut it out last minute. I guess that's why Gambol's death looks a bit weird.
It actually doesn’t make much sense at all story wise, I mean this jokers not really the vengeful type in the normal sense. He likes to play with people and it makes more sense that he would leave Gambol with scars. But I guess they thought this looked a lot cooler and thinking on it, I feel like it would’ve been weird to see Gambol after this scene. He would’ve held no relevance to the story

It's absolutely insane how effortless he makes this look. The voice, the accent, everything. He absolutely is the Joker and is a completely different person. In real life everyone who knew Heath would say he was one of the most gentle, kind people that they've ever met. I think we have gotten so used to knowing Heath Ledger as the Joker that we've forgotten he was also in Brokeback Mountain, A Knight's Tale and 10 Things I Hate About You. After watching these and then re-watching the Dark Knight (with the whole world doubting him at that point). You can see how phenomenal of an actor he is here proving us all wrong. The Joker is literally the complete opposite of Heath Ledger. Legendary performance.
Heath Ledger will always be remembered for his incredible talent, and his portrayal of the Joker will always be a shining example of his abilities as an actor. His legacy will continue to live on through his unforgettable performances, and he will always be remembered as one of the greats.
One aspect of the Joker's character overshadowed by his manic personality was his unexpected physical abilities. His "magic trick" with the pencil required quickly overpowering a much bigger opponent, and him quickly stabbing the two men on either side of him as he rose from the bag in this scene required real skill. That, with his ability to take a severe beating from the Batman and continue talking to him, is pretty formidable.

Nashton Norton where do you get he was a war veteran all that is is a rumor. The reason Nolan didn’t give you anything about his origin is that’s the way he wanted to keep it Out of the movie-Joaquin phoenix his movie was the most overrated piece of shit movie I ever seen don’t even compare the two. And one more thing TDK was supposed to be a Batman movie and it ended up being a joker movie his performance was so good. And he stole the movie from three academy award winning actors. And I wonder if Joaquin I’m a nut case phoenix would’ve been able to do that if the movie wasn’t centered solely on him I doubt it
@@romcapprotti7477 your saying your not comoaring yet your comparing. They both are great. If phoenix gets the joker role with baan he will nailed i guess same goes to ledger. Both are marvelous. I guess some people cant understand the movie or like the movie but its unnecessary to degrades his talent. Oh no.
Joker noticed that the last time he mentioned Gambol's grandmother, Gambol was very angry. He could tell that Gambol cared about his family, or maybe had a chip on his shoulder about it(insert potentially insensitive "black people no father" joke). So, when he meets Gambol again, he tells a backstory that is a corrupted version of "family".
Later, Joker knew from the start that Harvey had a romantic partner. He knew that Rachel and Harvey were in love. So, he tells Rachel a backstory that is a corrupted version of "love".
I wonder what backstory he was going to tell Batman.
That’s some new thought.
Great work deciphering it
@John Nada Actually, wasn't there some fan theory that Ledger's Joker is a war veteran? Someone who fought honorably for his nation turning into what he is now, that's definitely a twisted version of justice. And it would be fitting for him to tell his truth to Batman, since, you know, it's Batman and Joker.
He kinda told one in the interrogation room scene
@@kaiz1845 "You wanna know how I got these scars? I used to work spec ops. Couple of us got taken on the wrong side of the border. We're not supposed to be there, so there's no rush to get us back. We're in a hole for three years. Every now and then our captors get bored, and they take turns with us- in pairs; one guy forced to watch. One day it's my turn. They strap me down, but today it's different. He tells me to smile, says I should be happy they keep me alive. He laughs. He says: 'I'll make you smile.' Aand. Now I'm smiling."

On a night like this, we're sent down into Afghanistan to take down a group of Taliban scumbags.
Now the operation - goes relatively smoothly. No one dies on our team, and anyone who survives is hog-tied and gagged, courtesy of me.
See, like you, I had a, uh, code. Just like yours. A silly, little, code. Never. Kill. Anyone, unless I absolutely, positively had to. And I was quite good at not killing anyone, believe me. I *captured* my enemies.
We round up all the, uh, *overzealous* gunmen and load 'em into a little truck we found. But, before we're about to head off, one of our guys spots a straggler running off.
Now, all of us, excepting me, are too tired and weary to chase after him. So, they send me. But even I can't catch up to him, so I decide to just let him go. I return to the guys, and the next morning we haul the captives away.
But the thing is, when on duty - you never, ever slack off. As we're driving to the extraction point along the worn dirt road, a dirty bomb deonates, catching us all off guard. A truckload of my comrades disappears in - *fire* and *asshhhhh.* And as for me, well, that's how I got these scars. Two pieces of shrapnel flew at my faces, sssllll *icing* both of my cheeks.
I fall to the ground, spent.
A while later, an old, white pickup truck shows up. One guy gets out - presumably the leader of the thugs, followed by another guy. But get this - it's the same guy I spared the night before.
So, me watching, he takes his gun to my crippled unit commander, laughing while he does it. He aims it at his head, and says these words to him - 'دلسوزی تو پایان تو بود - Your compassion was your end.'
Those scars - the mental ones *and* the cheek ones from the shrapnel I got to the face - stayed with me my entire life. And I never would've gotten them had I not refused to kill that man.
But now I have something going for me - now I see the bright side.
Now I'm always smiling."

Agreed, but ... seems to have worked for various politician/businessmen.
Keeping the word is essential for business. Unless your business is cheating costumers n stuff but he is bigger fish with more serious stuff

Theory:
But what if the two background stories on how he got his scares are both true.
That does make some sense yeah I agree...kinda
I love this and it’s now my headcannon
plausible. He didn't slash this guy's cheek, he broke his neck.
I think he just adapts the story to his victims to intimidate them. He probably knew gamble had a bad childhood and used it against him. When he faced rachel he thinks of another story. You can even see him making up the story in this scene. My father was…… (thinks), a drinker
I don't think that was the intention tbh
While Heaths performance is incredibly awesome and insane, I believe that Hans Zimmers score was a huge part of why this joker is so good
It wasn't the Joker than killed him, it was the suggestive musical cue.
Meh, Zimmers cue didn't get in the way.
Christopher Nolan and Hand Zimmer always go so well together
Zimmer said he wanted to make the score mirror the Joker's stories and mindset. Escalating the violin note to the point where it sounded like the string would break but never would.
The magic of Hans score is he made no heroic symphony batman is just 2 notes and joker is just 1 note. They both work so well and just enhanced the performance of the actors and made it so memorable.

Every joker scene in dark knight is iconic
What made the joker so terrifying was he had no superpowers he was like a lot of dangerous people walking the streets of every city unnoticed but he could manipulate people with mind games he just wanted to watch the world burn
Joker >> The Batman >>>> The dark knight trilogy >>>>> Marvel
no, he was the one who put gotham together, remember all the crime bosses? with the mega ton of money? yeah, the Joker burned it all, and the white knight? he replaced him with someone even better, when he says he has "no plan" he's joking, like a joker, he's never serious with his words, though he's somehow always inhumane in ways, one with no backstory, we don't even know how he got his scars
His superpower was his understanding of human psychology. He knew EXACTLY how to get his desired response from anyone
I remember when this movie first came out.....and I swear this movie gets better and better each time I watch it
I watched this as a kid.

Just cant get over this movie even after so many years. This is just pure cinematic greatness
It leaves so much juice to the imagination, like the Joker's true origin story.
2:00 Try-outs. Joker is a genius HR manager.

tommy tommy Here is a third story about his scares it gives a lot more perspective on the joker and about his backstory

Wow I never realized that, I’ve watched this movie at least a thousand times and I’ve never noticed that
I'll always remember how this was the ONLY movie my dad took me to see in theaters and actually stayed awake all the way through it was so good
The casting of the guy on 1:44 is really good, he has a little bit of madness in his eyes just like Joker.
He's the most intense henchman the whole scene lol

I wonder what Joker does in his free time. Does he live in an apartment and casually recruit street punks? Does he wear that makeup all the time? Does he go shopping and buy food every once in a while, which I guess he would like candies...
In the comics he was quite fond of pink cotton candy.

Suspension of disbelief.
He literally told the world he had a bounty on the Joker's head. He was expecting someone to bring him in in a body bag.

Heath Ledger’s Joker is the most terrifying Joker. The way he says “why so serious?” is spine-chilling. There’s just something about Joker not screaming that makes him even more terrifying. Outstanding performance by Heath Ledger. He was a legend and he will never be forgotten.
It's heartbreaking to think about the fact that Ledger's life was cut short, as he clearly had so much more to offer the world of cinema. But his performance as the Joker will always stand as a testament to his incredible skill as an actor. He truly gave everything he had to this role, and the result is a performance that will forever be remembered as one of the greatest in cinematic history.
Joaquin was amazing but Heath was terrifying in the role and was so powerful it felt like he had far more than 43 mins of screen time.
That's actually a lot of screen time
i mean... considering the role he plays, thats still not alot of screen time. if anything 1/2 would be more sensible than 1/3 lol

Once you see the later scene where he’s making up a completely different story, you see the genius behind this moment. Nolan took the “multiple choice past” quote from The Killing Joke and gave it his own unique spin.
George Liapes the Joker works better as a character when his backstory is unknown
giving him an origin story takes away his mystique
@@rinzler1801 multiple backstories makes him sound when more insane, so insane he can't even remember his past right or simply refuses not to
@@detectivepayne3773 All are true. He was a person with a terrible childhood likely with a miltary dad who went crazy. This is hinted as he disarmed and attacked the mother. Then, he escaped or (killed) the dad note how he mentions "was" a drinker. Hinting he got rid of him. Then he himself joined the miltary and upon coming back couldn't bear losing his wife making him loose his mind as reference "all it takes is one bad day" for a man to snap

The thing about heath’s joker is that you can’t really see ‘heath’ through all that make up. All you see is the character directly.
It's so true, I love it.
If you focus on his face long enough you can see it. Tbh the average person doesn't stare at his face for 10+ minutes.
even without the makeup - you would have no idea it was him. Thats what makes this performance incredible.
All I see is RDJ
I always find myself staring at him trying to see Heath. It takes real concentration.
