    If you want to fly backwards with bidirectional throttle off, you can set a keybinding for 'inverse throttle' so you have a binding for reverse thrusters

    Just a word on the T16kM reliability: Been using twin T16kMs since Dec 2015 in various space/flight sims - mostly ED, Star Citizen, X4 - probably averaging at least 40 hours a week (I'm retired, tyvm) for 6 years. My right hand stick only recently lost it's Z axis (stuck reading max) and one button is unreliable. These are the older green bases - buttons were improved for the orange - so, IMO, the T16kMs are definitely the best bang for the buck getting into sims. Just tear 'em down and lube them once a year or so. I'm happy you got them. Nothing makes you grin like flying something nimble and fast with sticks!

    That's my controller, I love it! I changed around the buttons a lot to make it more to my liking. To fly backwards, I chose one of the buttons to toggle the thrust direction (it is the one on the throttle under my left middle finger, that is up), so when I press the button and move the throttle forward, it makes the ship fly backwards. When I let go of that button, it changes back to flying forward. The other one of those two buttons, facing down, is boost.

      Dual sticks isn't so great for X4, which doesn't have a relative throttle flight model - it handles throttle as an absolute setting. It does have an FA/off option (which would make a relative throttle useful) but that gets turned off every time you enter travel mode. There are some insane goblins who play X4 with dual sticks but I can't imagine it's not tiring on the throttle hand. Also there aren't as many easily accessible buttons on the stick, so in dual stick you lose a lot of buttons within reach of your hand without taking it off the stick.

    I have that HOTAS myself and use it for Star Citizen and also X4. In the beginning it felt quite unfamiliar for X4. I think X4 is mainly made for Keyboard/Mouse steering with all its hotkeys and stuff. But this HOTAS has more that enough buttons for me to bind everything important to a specific button and after a while I dont want to miss my HOTAS for X4
    A hint for Keyboard/Mouse users who also own a StreamDeck: I have bound common hotkeys like the 4 shipmodes, toggling HUD (for crystal hunting), scanning my target etc to buttons on the Streamdeck and I use a dedicated StreamDeck profile that activates itself once X4.exe is in foreground. That way I dont have to remember all the Hotkeys on my Keyboard when I am too lazy to connect my HOTAS.

    • @CaptainCollins
      @CaptainCollins  3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My one issue with the T16000 series is that, for something so heavily marketed to space sims, it's weird that there isn't a 'detent' configuration for the throttle to give it some resistance in a bidirectional throttle mode. It's one thing that I think would elevate the kit. Otherwise, there's generally enough buttons that the stick base buttons become less important. Which is good because if you've got the throttle, hitting those buttons is annoying and since they're flat, it is harder (in my experience) to develop the muscle memory for them and access them on the fly.

    "We will get rid of the keyboard as much as we can." Personally I'd much rather get rid of the mouse! It's the least immersive device possible. I have the throttle joystick nub set to mouse control while I'm in the map but it's not very precise, and it's upside down. (I also use it for vertical and horizontal thrust, so if I reverse the vertical axis to make the mouse work normally, the thrust axis gets reversed as well. Oops.)
    The tiny throttle on the stick is still active when the throttle is attached - I think it's just not configured by default. I have mine set to turn on the loot magnet. (Something about using a slider for the magnet just feels right.)

    • @CaptainCollins

    Heheh.. dunno why YT put this video in my recommended other then I've been watching Update 7.0 reaction video's. For the last 2 years I've been using Dual VKB Gladiator NXT's(1 NXT EVO with Omni Throttle adapter on the left) and VKB T-Rudder Mk-IV. Use them in both X4 and Star Citizen. I do have the T.16kM HOTAS controllers from 4 years ago collecting dust around here somewhere though. Decent budget controllers but I'll never give up my VKB gear. To say NPC's don't stand a chance with a HOSAS/Rudder setup in X4 is an understatement. Ooooh ya! I also use a Tobii Eye Tracker 5. Does Head and eye tracking so keeping an eye on targets in X4 or Star Citizen is as simple as "looking" in that direction.

    11:04 LOL the ONE thing I came here for was the customizable key remapping and we got: "A few minutes later..."! Captain Collins, I know this may seem pretty basic to you but for myself a complete novice, the controls menu is confusing. It has two columns of mapping options and it's not clear to me what each column does. Additionally, I get warnings when I try to remap a key that has already been mapped to a command. I have the T.16000M dual joysticks and I'm fine with using the keyboard and mouse for menus and platform navigation, but I would like all the flight controls and weapons systems to be on the sticks. Any suggestions on other videos or channels that cover setting that up? And of course, thank you for posting this video. The rest of what you said made perfect sense. Cheers!

    • @CaptainCollins
      @CaptainCollins  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Two columns mean only you can map every action twice. Alternative keys if you want so.
      I don't think that anyone else covered that for X4. Maybe, I don't know.
      If you get a warning that you remap something, that shouldn't bother you while going through the menu and setting it up the first time, you will only change standard settings.
      Hope that helps a bit.

    Coming from Elite Dangerous to X4 - need advice.
    I'm a ED commander of about 500h experience.
    Yesterday I got me X4. Now after 2 hours of playing - I already have the feeling that I will play both games with totally different approaches and careers.
    ED like a simulation to explore the "real" galaxy
    X4 much more like a economy simulation located in space
    I've got a relative small desk table and when I leave flight mode in game - I prefer to put the big HOTAS setup on the ground to have clearance for mouse and keyboard. That is annoying, but in ED it's absolutly worth it.
    *So what do you think - is X4 a HOTAS game?*
    Flight mode in X4 feels very good with mouse and keyboard - but I can't decide if a HOTAS is much much better for flight mode.
    _(and no - I'm not going to buy a bigger desk table )_
