Quick tip for folks: the data leak for claiming a ship is always near the suit dock, I believe. Once you know where that is, you don't have to go searching anymore.
Small note, if you get capital ship parts below I believe 20% (could be bit less) they shut down, while if you destroy them you get a reputation hit. so if you want to stop the ship without reputation hit just shoot engines until they stop functioning but don't destroy then, same with shields and turrets.
The target seems to only repair one part at a time (I believe always the engine first) so just by keeping the one part being repaired always low keeps the ship completely incapacitated. Nice bonus to that is that if you don't destroy parts once the boarding is complete you get the ship with all the disabled parts intact.
Nice when using S or M class ships when you don't have enough crew for flyby capture. Plus capital ship crew also bail out but unlike S and M ships they never abandon, so if you patient you can force the capital ship crew to bail out to the last 1 captain, then just board.
Don't forget the tediousness of repairing all of your weapons and hull for free with your hand repair laser in your spacesuit!! lol
You can also set a global alarm for ships (L / XL) from the green scale plate.
You get a signal tone and location whenever they are spotted in the universe.
You can board them everywhere without losing any reputation at all.
You can also get free ships from missions. All you have to do is to navigate the ship out of a minefield. When that is done you cancel the mission. Fly the ship to nearest wharf and sell it.
i started playing x4 a month ago (used to play tons of x2 back in the day) and your content helped me tons, great content man and thx a lot
Boarding is one of my favourite hobbies in X4. I've tried using large ships for boarding, but found them too slow moving around the map.
Here's how I board (base game, no DLC, non-custom budgeted start)
Boarding Medium ships
- Buy a Pulsar & attack medium SCA ships until they bail. Take over ship, transfer a pilot, fly to wharf. Repair (optional). Strip, transfer Captain then sell. Repeat.
Boarding Large ships
- Buy a mk2 Nemesis (with 2 mk2 ion, 3 mk2 bolt) and 3 mk2 Gorgon Vanguards with mk2 bolt guns and turrets. Fill with marines (56 in total)
- Put Gorgons into "attack with" Nemesis fleet and set all turrets on all ships to "attack my current target"
- Buy 2 minimum spec Ides Vanguards and park at a wharf with lots of workers (one is "Marine recruitment", the other "Service crew")
- Place advanced satellites in neutral sectors (Silent Witness XI & XII etc)
- Set up an alert for large (usually Phoenix and Behemoth) SCA ships in neutral sectors
- Fly to SCA ship in Nemesis, scan and take out large turrets first. Then engines, then plasma, then tracking, then all other turrets. 3 gorgons will help take heat off your Nemesis. They'll also target the same turret as you. If you are low on shields/hull, you can hide in blind spot and cycle through SCA turrets - Gorgons will auto-attack the turrets for you
- Take down hull to 75%, board & take over ship. Transfer remaining marines back to Gorgons. Replace dead marines from "Marine recruitment" ship.
- Transfer service crew from, er, "Service crew" ship to captured ship
- Repair (optional). Strip, transfer crew back to, you guessed it, "Service crew" then sell.
- Repeat as much as you want
Initially, there's a bit more micro in this method, BUT, the speed that you cap SCA ships is much faster than lugging large vessels around. You can do the crew transferring whilst your Nemesis co-pilot is flying to the next SCA ship. After a couple of caps, I buy a Stork Sentinel. This repairs your capped ships for free and becomes your mobile Marine recruitment/Service crew ship (sell the 2 Ides). Typically I have 50 service crew and 150 marines on the Stork, only telling it to recruit more marines every 5 or so caps. The micro goes down a reasonable amount once you have the Stork.

@@TotalyRandomUsername. You can set up alerts for certain ship types, races etc, it's very useful. Go to "Player Information", then "Global Orders". There is an "Alerts" section at the bottom of the list. I set up an "SCA" alert L and XL SCA ships in neutral sectors (then later, galaxy wide). I also set up alerts for Kha'ak / Xenon in sectors I have a stations etc.

Way to complicated...
A few fighters and a falx with elite marines would do the job just fine.
Go behind the large ships, destroy one or two turrets, then set the boarding operation to very strong.
You need torpedos, to deal with shields and turrets, but if you know how to exploit blind spots you can just sit and wait.
@@efxnews4776 Still way too complicated. Get one Shuyaku freighter. Load it with 10 crew and fill the rest with marines, either from Terran or Split shipyards for bonus strength.
Get 100km away from your target ship. Travel mode towards it, put the reticle touching the X to one side (up, down, left, right, doesn't matter). Turn off your turrets and disable your drones.
When you get within 1.5km range, pause the game. Set up your boarding using all your marines. Don't forget to set "Extra Strong" in both boxes.
Hit the boarding button. Let your ship keep flying until at least 50km away.
Stop the ship and wait for the capture. Trade 1 million credits worth of marines for 1 nice ship, no faction rep loss.

Oh damn. I wish I knew about taking over ships like this last night. I get a short cinematic of a capital group about to go off and fight, they boost away from the gate... and run into an asteroid, crippling their ship. I don't know if they had any crew left, but both engines were gone and there were scorch marks everywhere. A couple of repair drones worked on it in the meantime.
New to X4, wish i had discovered this game years ago. It's exactly what i was looking for, and just stumbled across it. I've not yet tried boarding. I will have to try these out. You explained it very well.

Solely to drive-by board on my pirate play-through. (Lightly modded). Roleplaying as a pirate / smuggler is the most fun I've had on this game so far by far.

Humble bundle put out an X bundle recently and that is how i got into X4. I have watched all your videos ( and others) and learned alot. Tried piracy quite a bit on larger vessels cus i couldn't seem to get done with M/S ships. Since you posted this video, i captured 8 ARG construction ship and I'm still at max rep......
It has made capturing SCA destroyers easier since the fly by works great, and i dont risk losing the ships to local authorities

You can avoid rep hits captuing L and cap ships, do not destroy engines get to near 90% damage and the engines will cease to function and stop, engines function at 35%, this also goes for weapons. You can still launch marines with a near full strength ship, you wont take any rep hit

I loved boarding in x3, but In over 1k hours I didn't give it a try in x4. However since the new plot piracy missions in the new expansion I got a little taste of it. It's fun, and with these tips I'm gonna try my hand at it
Did not tried it ever. Because i build a big ship building station and can produce ships for free anyway. But maybe i should. I wanted to declare war to one of the factions at some point anyway.

i've always wanted my specialized ships to make OOS boarding but they always seem to destroy the ship and most of the time losing all the marines.
personal boarding is way too easy but OOS boarding is impossible its like there is no middle range.
I make my first millions selling disguised pirate destroyers. Set a global alarm for "plunderer", have a fleet of a couple of M fighters with split disintegrators and an L trader with marines. As soon as I hear the alarm I set the fleet to follow the pirate before it becomes invisible, take care of other stuff until your hunters catch on. Once you're tailing it, scan, give orders to board, bot "strong" setting, kill a couple of turrets, engines and wait. The reason to use the split guns is because they go through shields, so you don't need a ton of firepower and don't need to destroy shield generators. This is important because you save repair money and sometimes patrol ships target the pirate, and you want their shields recharging otherwise it can get destroyed before capturing it.
Hi, how did you manage to board the ship you took the engines down on because you didn't take down the turrets. My boarding pods wont launch until all turrets are destroyed. Thx
6:14 don't forget this is capped to 1.0 which means you just need lower max hull/shields than the target. Going lighter still won't help.
Very informative video, especially the part about the settings on the Approach and Infiltration. I used to just let them as they were, thinking that the game will scale them for me or something :P
I do boarding with my Syn, it has 110 veteran marines and a single elite, that I'm not willing to risk, I think I will keep him as an instructor or smf :)

My game is very modded so, one of the things i installed was the learn all things mod, with time all your crew learn everything and get 5 stars in everything.
Really useful mod despite been way too op.
They should nerf a bit the mod so the crew only learn things that they experience, if you really want to have all skills you need to do rotation duties.
Also, the vanilla npc progression is way to slow, i should be more faster.
The Signal leak always seems to be right next to the exit hatch used with the Spacesuit, on ships without a landing pad the dropables also come out there as far as i know.
So it is easy to find in most cases as sooner or later one knows all the ships and where that hatch is on each.

A friend of mine uses several transports to deliver the marines after taking out the turrets and engines with a small fighter, mostly because he lacked the money for big ships back then.

7:50 with that ship it is also advised to not pilot it out your self but to put a captain on it fly out of the system and then tell it to fly to friendly sector due to the mines in the system iv done it a few times and so far the npc has had no trouble getting it out

when you hit a friendly ship like this.. does the standing drop permanently ? i guess not as you never destroy the ship? so if you start this when you have +18 standing it stay +18 after a while? after captureing lets say a large miner? . i just tested it.. not worth it for me.. made argon drop from +18 to +13 when i took over large transporter.

@@CaptainCollins That feels a bit too cheesy for me, but yep, that is the better option. Ambushing inside enemy sectors can be explained away in my headcanon, this one is a bit harder to explain

Besides the marine thing i always did this in x3. Shooting pirates and xenon until u get the ship or buying cargo ships with low hull, repairing them with my laser and selling them or use them myself xD

You're the go-to guy for X4 sir. Bravo. Apparently, you can only build Syn's now and I'm way far from that. Attempting my Jolly Roger 240+ pirate rush right now. Not looking though ;) The pods don't all come out at once and drift.. poor bastards.
OK.. looks like I'm gonna need 2 freighters totally full back to back. First wave got murdered.
There is a distant way to capture S/M ships - 1 ship with 1 marine (per target), but 'Claim' command works only if implementor ship is in close (10-20km) radius of the target. And marines are not so accurate as we are, they just damage hull and some equipment (and get precious boarding experience!!!). I am personally capture Minotaur Raider (because of crew of 15 people and high speed) to use it as a claimant ship, useful for getting large amounts of small ships in situations when you have 50+ on 50+ S ships fight (player has to be present in sector, OOS bailing doesn't work), typical fight with Vigor Syndicate in their sectors is likely to be 100+ on 100+ and you will get around 10-20 S ships as a prize, scattered across large range so automated claiming with M ship with 10+ marines saves around 30 minutes.
Also, I found that hull damage seems decreases crew morale and so that some weapons with bleeding through shields allow you to get S/M ships at 90% chance because they do direct hull damage and it low enough to make lots of ticks to get bail out to proc. So, ship with split Thermal guns or Burst rays are good for both burning surface elements on capships and making small ships captains nervous.
If I leave the sector while I have a boarding going on, and when coming back I see its destroyed and all marines are gone. Even if I don't leave the sector but I am far away, and no one was tattacking that ship. The turrets of the boarding ships are also deactivated.
So I have to stay there and watch it everytime.
Why is that?
I didn't try in 5.0+, but as of version 4.1 I could only get progress on the Liberator "claim 10 ships" achievement when I used a marine to board the ship.
Also, in the mission to rescue the Boron, there was an attacking frigate that bailed out. It was the first ship I ever got to bail out, so I got in my spacesuit and flew over to the frigate to capture it. I looked for the little scan point for a good half hour at least! No scan point. Turns out it's a bug with just that particular ship. You MUST use a marine to capture that one, for whatever reason.
That M ship on that mission, i only got it once on like 10 new game starts... at that point i already had a marine on the scout so it was instant capture.
Where to get ASGARD, which sector have them in good numbers for boarding. Also moon is locked so dont suggest moon.
Dunno if the bonus tip has been patched. I captured two Odysseus E in Pontifex's claim while it was still held by the Holy Order. Took rep hits for points destroyed and the ship capture. Ive settled for just capturing ships in unclaimed regions
Great vid, but.... I regularly, if not most of the time, have them bail 1 at a time, which is pain in the neck when they've got full crew. Minimum crew I've seen is 2. Those Katana's are a pretty good way to get early cash. Though once you get an L class ship yourself can make much more from boarding and I try to avoid damaging the hull. Haven't capped a L class below 95% hull so far. I also get them down to 85-80% when bail capping, to start working on them. Rarely need to go below 60%. Have capped many at 80-82%.
I'd never tried that fly-by technique before but I gave it a go with a tricked out Shuyaku and 225 marines. So far I've bagged 3 Honshu and a Tokyo carrier that also came with 9 Gladius and 26 Kukri (no pilots in any of them ofc). All with no reputation loss, brilliant! I wonder if my troops can manage an Asgard, a good number of them are veterans now.... I'll soon find out! Thanks for the video, really cool tips. 😃

i suspect you might need 2 ships next to the asgard, release marines of both ships at same time then wait.. what about the turrets shooting the pods? .
@@kaiserdragon33 Thanks for the reply, I have since successfully Boarded an Asgard (and 7 others) with a single Shuyaku using the fly-by method. The trick is to make sure that most of the marines are veterans to bump the 'boarding score' to around 7000.

I came up with this fly-by method on my own before i saw your video and i love it. The only thing is, that after i saw you do it in a Syn i boarded one of my own for boarding actions, but now it seems that its horrible for fly-by-boarding! Roughly half of my Boarding-Pods spawn about 15km from my target, even if my syn is as close as 140m. I loose roughly 50% of boarding pods to my targets turrets in a Syn. I tried to board an okinawa and a kyushu. Any advice`?
I had the same problem for about two attempts. No idea what cause the pods to spawn that far.
But most of the times it worked 🤷♂️ Can't figure the problem out yet.
@@CaptainCollins thx for the reply. I did some troubleshooting and tried to Board an asgard and everything worked fine. 2nd try kyushu worked as well. Maybe the target has to be below something like 30m/s

First: thank you! Yeah, it still works, the principles are the same though you will loose some marines now because the pods will drift away and could get shot during an attempt.
I tried to enter the ship in Xenon territory, but its too difficult to fly the damn suit.

I first advise that you make sure to unplug it, and carefully take it to your dumpster, throw it in, and buy a modern gaming PC. Alternatively you could donate it to a museum.
In the first part of your video where you leave the ship and fix the signal leak you mention that you can just transfer a captain to the new vessel. I haven't been able to figure out how to do that. Can you please explain how to put a new captain on a captured ship so I can go back to my original one and keep pirating? Vielen dank!
Find a person from any ship or in your personnel management tab on the map and right click -> work somewhere else. You right click the ship and choose "Captain". That's it :)

At the end of the video you are mentioning that abandoning crew and boarding crew will damage components and hull. I believe there is no way to avoid this is there?
Unfortunately not. You could make them bail and "take" the ship yourself, but for capitals, that could take forever, if it's even possible.
Thing for me is: boarding is so easy in X4 it almost feels like cheating.
Did you know that the Cobra (M class SPL) has 25 crew members? It is also fast, durable, has high hull value and is cheapish. This makes the perfect boarding ship, and you can easily take about every ship with a fleet of them that you want.
Oh how I wish I had known about the Freelancer Katanas not causing reputation loss.

could you please make a video that is short and to the point about assigning fleets, assigning a new ship to an existing fleet, removing a single ship from an existing fleet, and changing the leader of an existing fleet. Are these things even possible? I played thousands of hours of X3TC but in X4 I am totally confused about fleets, they seem completely broken. I am starting to yell at the monitor about 'why wont you do what I want? why cant things be clear and easy instead of unintuitive convoluted mess!?!?!?'
please help, game is starting to be no fun now that I need some simple patrol fleets, cannot even imagine getting to the same place as in X3 where I had huge fleets that were easy to manage and control.

Everything on the highest setting and SSAA 4x.
My pc is in the description. 1080p resolution.
CPU matters at least as much as the video card in this game. There're some settings (like AA and vol. fog) that the game warns you about using, too. (I set'm anyway. Takes my framerate down to the 20's on a 3080 when in a big cloud, but I don't care. Better to look good than to feel good. ;)
I am quite sure i found every single jumpgate. No splits anywhere. Do i have to complete a quest to open a jumpgate to the splits or do they only come with a certain dlc?

While boarding I had an issue that i send 100% of capacity military i see more was sent for example i sent 41 i see 61 marines sent.
Can you elaborate a bit more?
The Target has a capacity of 41 then I sent 41 marines when I open boarding menu I see 61/41 on the attacking force.
When It is finished I see boarding pods on map view.
Never saw that happening, sounds like something you should post in Egosoft forum.

It will be an individual issue I guess... at the moment I have almost a full re-installed PC with only 3 games on it. You would need to troubleshoot it individually.

I think its just silly that its easier to pirate L and XL ships than to deal with the bail mechanics of S/M ships.
Why fly by ? Why not standing next to the targeted ship ?
That way you do not get shot. And you don't need to shoot back. And you don't destroy surface elements for rep loss. There are a few reasons :)

I think he means that if a ship has too much crew it will be harder to capture. So you want to look for ships with less crew

Signal leak on pilotless ship can also be repaired by repair laser of your space suit with same result - take over control of ship, but much faster.
