Again, the Benchmark of Tone. We are all just chasers of such. Glorious life times Johan thanks for taking us along. Love getting the alert the master is back in his tone chamber.
Phenomenal sound for both the Gibson and the Fender! I would have never had been able to hear such clear sounding demonstrations of this iconic gear if it wasn't for this channel. Thanks!
I have one of these now, the 2014 reissue. The stock speakers are sublime. Simply put, I've never heard another Marshall I like as much. Sounds absolutely enormous with an extension cab - I've got a Zilla cab with Heritage Greenbacks.
Wow for the quality of gear and effort that has been made into putting this video togther the views should be in the hundreds of thousands,I think your channel is amazing and I hope it explodes onto to the youtube guitar genre
Eric Horn - I was going to comment that mate 👍 This riff of Simon's especially sounds killer in another vid in which Johan & Simon demo 5 amps (Marshall, Orange, Fender, Traynor and Hiwatt I guess).
Great way to end a week! Loved the different tones available between the LP and the Strat with this amp. I could hear a lot of classic rock sounds from both instruments. Can't wait to see the Brothers Segeborn joined by Special Guest Simon on some mix videos :-) God bless and Rock on bro!
The sound of your video is especially awesome today. I think It has to do with the room mic. Excellent. In my humble opinion, keep the room mic more prominent. Ambient mics are way more effective to transmit the way the sound is in front of you. To mic the cab is for professional recording. If your goal is to show with more fidelity the tone you are hearing straight form the amp, ambient mics at the right distance are the way to go, especially here on youtube land. That is one of my strugles with That Pedal Show channel... everything for the last couple of years sounds exactly the same. It is like putting ketchup on top of every food.
Johan the part with the tremolo that's feeding back is great! You should build something around that. Kind of reminds me of a song by love battery. Great job as always!!
Hi, Johan! Realy interesting kind of sound. I like that kind of overdrive for playing chords. Sounds like external effect. Realy intesting! Have a nice weekend! C.U.! Zigfrid
what song is he playing? I've been digging through Hendrix, Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher songs and god know what else but i just cannot find it... it sounds so familiar :D
On my 1974x (same controls) I jump the channels. Run the normal channel volume at 8 and tremolo channel volume at 3, both tones at noon, adjust the distortion with the guitar volume knob. No fizzy sound. Just rich tones. I also run it with a 1974cx extension cab. Gives it a bigger sound.
Marshall's reputation was built on 50 and 100 watt amps but the 18 watt model 1973 is truly worthy of legendary status. It's one of just two amps that are still on my bucket list.
Hi Johan! Nice nod to Norman Greenbaum in the intro riff 👍 Simon's riffs are also killer as always 🤟 + a personal request: if you have the chance to play this '59 burst through this Marshall combo again, please-please play some tunes from the Beano album 🙏 Simply imagining the Segeborn twins playing Hideaway - i.e. "Johan I" playing the rhythm and "Johan II" playing the solo - already gives me goosebumps! Nice dream anyway 😂
your videos are so good. I just spent my whole weekend watching your videos. Hey what do you think of the vintage modern 2266c? i have an opportunity to get one for a decent price. how do you rate them?
That tone from 0.57sec, that's about the best crunch or grit you could ever ask for, just superb full of harmonic complexity which would just sit well in a miz. If you ask me this is the best marshall of all plus it sounds killer with both humbuckers and single coils.
If I have learned anything from your Channel Johan, its that speakers can make or break an amp. Personally I think these speakers are hurting this amp more than they are helping it. I would love to hear you play this rig through a 4x12 cab.
NICE crunch sound - both Les Paul and Strat sounded great. Are you using any specific effects pedal for the tremolo/feedback from 1:51 - 2:24, or is that something from the amp itself?
When that tremolo was cranked and it was just rhythmic noise really, the amp sounded like nothing I've ever heard. I'm surprised Jimmy or Jimi, or Jeff didn't use that in a recording somewhere...
Wow what a cool experience, to have a chance to play that amp or those guitars. Great playing! I wonder if you miked it across the room if it sounds like the "Beano" album at all. Wasn't that how that album got part of it's sound? Johan, you not only are a great guitarist/musician, but how cool is it that you get to play all these great instruments and have fun doing it?! So cool. Cheers.
how about comparing of humbuckers with volume+tone knob in the cicle, only volume/only tone in circle and no switch/switch in circle. i wonder how the pots and switches effect the signal?! can you check that for me? :D
You're spoiling us Johan ... vintage Firebirds, then a plethora of vintage SG's and now this awesome guitar & combo partnership. I think that 18 watter with tube trem circuit is the origin of the 1958x reissue. Love the saturated sound it creates at manageable volumes ... guess it would be great for recording ... so how are you going to top this 😁
While the distortion is a bit "fuzzy" (very much like certain fuzz pedals), I think the tone is quite nice for the type of music both of you were playing and it sounded great using both guitars. It's not a tone I would use very often, but I can see certain songs where the tone of this amp would be spot on, especially with that lovely vibrato effect built into it. An example would be like for a Western soundtrack type of song. Also for modern funk it's got a tone that really pops out and that I think would sit well in a mix. Likewise the clean tones to me sounds pretty nice. Not a bad amp if you know how to tastefully use it like both of you do.
I'm a Les Paul type of guy, but i think i liked the Strat more in this video. Maybe its the 10" speakers that harmonise a bit better with the lower output of the strat.
The 18 watt Marshall is one of very few amps that I WILL NOT pass up the opportunity to buy if I encounter one that's available and I have the money for it.
@Johan Segeborn I’m in Math class and I’m Using My phone to Watch This Video....Rock n roll real is real education...Let’s hope I won’t get in trouble Cheers..
That tremolo actually sounds really nice! The fizzy distortion might rub some people the wrong way but I think it has its place. I've built a highly modified clone of one of these with a TMB tone stack instead of the tremolo. It's also got a 1x12" speaker instead of a 2x10" arrangement. Hearing this I wonder if the 2x10" is a better way to go for this size of cabinet.
interesting how we all hear things different. I personally don't like fizzy distortion. doesn't seem to enhance or showcase the natural tone of those (highly likely superior sounding) instruments. but, to each his own and as always, thanks for all those videos ;-) cheers
That's the way the old amps sounded when you crank them. Distortion has evolved. Back then this is all you had. I'm sure through a 4-12 cabinet it would thicken it up a bit.
These amps weren't built to distort. back then they were all build to play clean. But as you turn them up to be heard in a loud rock band situation they would distort. Hance Distortion was born.
Good video! But these amps sound like Boss Distortion pedals plugged directly into a PA system :D Anyway I still respect them because these amps are pioneers.
Had one, sold one (1974x). Sounded just like that. But just didn’t work in band. Freqs didn’t work and got lost. It hates pedals but loves higher output humbuckers for AC/DC type tone ... it’s a one trick pony so make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. Doesn’t have the depth of say a bluesbreaker or super lead
I’ve got one of these, a ‘67. Two 10” Celestion ceramics with Marshall labels. The 2x10” is a little more “toppy” than the 2x12”er and (I imagine, have never played one) 1x12”er. Kinda light on the bass too. But in the room it’s a very punchy sound with loads of high end presence. Not a lot of clean headroom but the clean sound is really nice if not very loud. Darker sounding 12AX7s and EL84s can take out much of the cranked-up fizziness if that’s not your thing. If you happen to run across one of these in North America, be aware that they run at 230-240 volts only. So you’ll need a step-up transformer. Get a good one…the first one I used wasn’t robust enough and would heat up so much that it started to sag, making the amp sound small and overcompressed.
Again, the Benchmark of Tone. We are all just chasers of such. Glorious life times Johan thanks for taking us along. Love getting the alert the master is back in his tone chamber.
That`s all I want for christmas ! No socks , no scarves e.t,c Just a 59 Les Paul and 18 watt Marshall combo .
"Just that"
I think I'll get you socks instead... They're about 300 grand cheaper
If I had that rig I would never leave the house
March 19, 2020. Now we don't have choice. Glad I have a bunch of guitars now.
The strat sounded awesome through that thing. match made in heaven. Have a good weekend. Time flies.
It does indeed! Cheers Johan
I was looking at this amp these days, and now there is the amp shoutout, you make dreams come true !
Damn U & Simon for getting to play with a neverending supply of Amazing vintage gear. Great to hear & see it all, but makes me wish I was so Lucky !!!
I built my 18 watt clone 10 years ago. For me it checks all the boxes. I can pick up a LP, Tele, or Strat and it gives me glorious tone. Nice video.
Thank you for the walk back in time! Your videos are the best!
This is one of my favorite video’s he’s made. What a treat.
Wow for the quality of gear and effort that has been made into putting this video togther the views should be in the hundreds of thousands,I think your channel is amazing and I hope it explodes onto to the youtube guitar genre
That was great! I love all of your videos. They get better and better. Thanks.
I love your videos Mr. Segeborn, I used them with drama students, yes, drama students!
Lick at 2:25 is my favorite. I’ve heard him play it on a few of your videos. Sounds great!
Glad to hear it, yeah Simon’s riffs are killer!
Eric Horn - I was going to comment that mate 👍 This riff of Simon's especially sounds killer in another vid in which Johan & Simon demo 5 amps (Marshall, Orange, Fender, Traynor and Hiwatt I guess).
You guys really put that amp through its entire range! Think it sounds great, and great Riffs!
Hi Johan. Nice video. What a wonderful amp. Your chords made me feel on a 60s Burt Bacharach record. Cheers.
Amazing tone. One of my faves of the amps you've showcased.
Thanks, glad to hear that!
Having just heard the 17w with the angled baffles... This one does work better with the strat. Love having so many reference points from this channel
That's lovely Johan!
Well done and thanks for sharing brother's!
Thanks Brother!
Great way to end a week! Loved the different tones available between the LP and the Strat with this amp. I could hear a lot of classic rock sounds from both instruments. Can't wait to see the Brothers Segeborn joined by Special Guest Simon on some mix videos :-) God bless and Rock on bro!
Fantastic tones, thanks Johan and Simon! Have a great weekend,Cheers! \m/
Have a great weekend you too Clive! Cheers! \m/
That's some raw, swampy, tasty, fun going on there! Thanks Johan
The sound of your video is especially awesome today. I think It has to do with the room mic. Excellent. In my humble opinion, keep the room mic more prominent. Im a strat and tele player..love the single coils thru this amp. Thx again Johan. Classic tones!!!
Thanks!
Epic been waiting for this. The bar has been raised. Thank you for all the awesome videos!
Johan the part with the tremolo that's feeding back is great! You should build something around that. Kind of reminds me of a song by love battery. Great job as always!!
Nice. Similar in some ways to my old 2x10 ‘popular’ ( which I love) , but different . I like it 🙂
Hi, Johan!
Realy interesting kind of sound. I like that kind of overdrive for playing chords. Sounds like external effect. Realy intesting! Have a nice weekend! C.U.!
Zigfrid
Have a great weekend Zigfrid! Cheers
Well that Marshall has the Marshall sound no doubt! Love the vintage amplifiers.
Channeling Jimi at 2:28, your mate gets into an awesome groove Johan!!! I’d really like to hear a 3 piece power trio sliding that riff!!! Kudos!!!
what song is he playing? I've been digging through Hendrix, Robin Trower, Rory Gallagher songs and god know what else but i just cannot find it... it sounds so familiar :D
WOW! What a fantastic amp and what sound!!! Wonderful!!!
Almost as good as my Woodhead 18W!
;-)
The LP through that amp sounds *glorious* !
Johan, tell your mate that that strat sounds fabulous.
Man, I love this channel.
Marshall's reputation was built on 50 and 100 watt amps but the 18 watt model 1973 is truly worthy of legendary status. It's one of just two amps that are still on my bucket list.
Gawd.... Melted my face again.... Great one guys
Great videos you guys do.... love the editing
Hi Johan! Nice nod to Norman Greenbaum in the intro riff 👍 Simon's riffs are also killer as always 🤟
+ a personal request: if you have the chance to play this '59 burst through this Marshall combo again, please-please play some tunes from the Beano album 🙏 Simply imagining the Segeborn twins playing Hideaway - i.e. "Johan I" playing the rhythm and "Johan II" playing the solo - already gives me goosebumps! Another great video, keep them coming :D
OH MY GOD.......the TONE!.........this is awesome!!!!
Mate you’re an absolute legend.
Thanks my friend :-) that's kind of you
your videos are so good. I just spent my whole weekend watching your videos. Hey what do you think of the vintage modern 2266c? i have an opportunity to get one for a decent price. how do you rate them?

Sounds amazing, thanks for sharing this.
That Strat sounds sooooooo good
Boom. Wonderful Johan
I’m pretty sure, that’s the best sounding marshal amp I have ever heard.
nice classic tones! super
I want to be Johan when I grow up, what a life! 🤘
Damn that tremolo sounds fantastic.
Wow, just wow, 18w, faultless tone. So much character in that sound with either guitar. Really high end quality.
Wow! This is THE tone
love it man.....18 watt my favo
Very good, killer tones.
I use marshall code 25 while i dream with a bluesbreaker
If this is regular stuff in this channel, i cant wait for the 100 k suscribers special. A real 59, jeez
If I have learned anything from your Channel Johan, its that speakers can make or break an amp. Personally I think these speakers are hurting this amp more than they are helping it. I would love to hear you play this rig through a 4x12 cab.
I think those 10's are whipped too. But for some things, its just what the doctor ordered
I'm building a 18 watt tmb right now. Following the ceriatone layout. I hope it sounds half as good as that . Damn
I'm heavenly impressed!
Thanks man! :-)
NICE crunch sound - both Les Paul and Strat sounded great. Are you using any specific effects pedal for the tremolo/feedback from 1:51 - 2:24, or is that something from the amp itself?
Tremolo sounds amazing
Thanks Jon, yeah it packed a lot of character
From another planet. Wow.
When that tremolo was cranked and it was just rhythmic noise really, the amp sounded like nothing I've ever heard. I'm surprised Jimmy or Jimi, or Jeff didn't use that in a recording somewhere...

So cool. Cheers.
Spirit in the sky!
Thank you so much! Love it!
What's the riff Simon plays at 2:27 ?
He's done it in a few video's.
how about comparing of humbuckers with volume+tone knob in the cicle, only volume/only tone in circle and no switch/switch in circle.
i wonder how the pots and switches effect the signal?!
can you check that for me? :D
we need to talk about Man Buns with that guy....
You're spoiling us Johan ... vintage Firebirds, then a plethora of vintage SG's and now this awesome guitar & combo partnership. I think that 18 watter with tube trem circuit is the origin of the 1958x reissue. Love the saturated sound it creates at manageable volumes ... guess it would be great for recording ... so how are you going to top this 😁
Hahaha, we’ll think of something ;-) Cheers
Nice video Johan!
I'm about to build an 18W clone... but I guess it woun't sound as great. :)
Thanks Dennis, are you gonna build the 1x12, 2x12 or the 2x10 version?
Johan Segeborn 1x12 is what I'm going for
While the distortion is a bit "fuzzy" (very much like certain fuzz pedals), I think the tone is quite nice for the type of music both of you were playing and it sounded great using both guitars. It's not a tone I would use very often, but I can see certain songs where the tone of this amp would be spot on, especially with that lovely vibrato effect built into it. Likewise the clean tones to me sounds pretty nice. Not a bad amp if you know how to tastefully use it like both of you do.
Simon looks like Zlatan Ibrahimovic
I’ve got a ‘67 2x12 1973 version and although the clean tone sounds similar the driven tone of the 2x12 is totally different.
Yeah the 7442 G10 is much more brittle sounding than the G12M Greenbacks in the 1973. Cheers
I'm a Les Paul type of guy, but i think i liked the Strat more in this video.
Maybe its the 10" speakers that harmonise a bit better with the lower output of the strat.
Simon got some great tones out of it indeed
The 18 watt Marshall is one of very few amps that I WILL NOT pass up the opportunity to buy if I encounter one that's available and I have the money for it.
Amazing tone. It doesn't work for everything, but then that's a good excuse to have several different Marshalls!
Original burst hell yeah!
Seriously where do you get these guitars
@Johan Segeborn I’m in Math class and I’m Using My phone to Watch This Video....Rock n roll real is real education...Let’s hope I won’t get in trouble
Cheers..
Is their a better blues RIG??? Love this amp and guitar Jonah...blessed you are!!
Thx my Friend 👍👍👍
Cheers my friend!
Billy Gibbons called. He wants his tone back pre Deguello. 😅😂
1:52 staring out over the Earth after the final bomb has dropped. What a soundtrack for the end of the world.
interesting how we all hear things different. I personally don't like fizzy distortion. doesn't seem to enhance or showcase the natural tone of those (highly likely superior sounding) instruments. but, to each his own and as always, thanks for all those videos ;-) cheers
Cheers :-)
I agree, this kind of distortion isn't very musical, very buzzy and unpleasant
Me three - this was not my thing - it even kind of reminded me of the Class 5 rotting in my attic. Still great demo as always.
Now that’s some FAT tone! Johan was playing with soul to start this one.
THere 's a natural fuzz sounding tone when u crank it up !
Yeah very thick sounding
The sockies evoke a certain sense of irony. Besides that, the Strat seems a little odd, a little muddy perhaps? In any event, keep up the good work.
I always dig the look and vibe of your videos. What video editing software do you use?
Good video!
But these amps sound like Boss Distortion pedals plugged directly into a PA system :D
Anyway I still respect them because these amps are pioneers.
**HOLY FRIGGIN BALLS!!!!!!!**
Sounds like a trip back in time .... sticky floors from spilt beer an all.
THE Perfect gigging amp if you don’t need any headroom......
Was this filmed in a shop where those guitars and amps are for sale or from a private collection ?
Had one, sold one (1974x). Sounded just like that. But just didn’t work in band. Freqs didn’t work and got lost. It hates pedals but loves higher output humbuckers for AC/DC type tone ... it’s a one trick pony so make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into. Doesn’t have the depth of say a bluesbreaker or super lead
Wow 🤩 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you have this amp in your shop, or do you know who owns it? I'm a serious buyer looking for an original 18w Marshall. Thanks!
Have you played the Handwired reissue?
If so, how does it compare?
1:08 ha! wacky lick again. sort of signature.
2:00 glorious sound. and THAT tremolo later...
i'd do many a bad thing for that amp
Hahaha! Cheers Eleni!
I’ve got one of these, a ‘67. Two 10” Celestion ceramics with Marshall labels. The 2x10” is a little more “toppy” than the 2x12”er and (I imagine, have never played one) 1x12”er. ...or just plug it in a 240 v outlet !!!!
If you’ve got one and it’s in a convenient spot, sure. Mine is at the wrong end of my house, and in the basement. :)
