NEWARK AND SHERWOOD PARISH #73: FARNSFIELD
Ok here we have the biggest one we’ve done for a while. This is Farnsfield, which sits on the former turnpike road from Southwell to Mansfield and just to the South of the Southwell Trail. The first mention of Farnsfield in records was in the year 956 in a document in which King Edwy of Northumbria gave the Danish Archbishop of York, Oscytel, the manor of Southwell, which included the farmstead of Farnsfield.
A small community of farmsteads, people here scraped a living from agriculture in a clearing at the edge of Sherwood Forest. By 1520 Farnsfield was the responsibility of Southwell Minster under the Archbishop of York, Cardinal Wolsey. Most people were farmers and poor land, bad weather, disease and starvation were constant hazards. By the 1600s more specialised trades were developing in Farnsfield including bakers, tailors and shoemakers.
By the late 1700s sheep rearing was the main source of income from outside. The population slowly grew, but very little industrialisation came to Farnsfield. Brickmaking was a notable exception. Today Farnsfield is a growing village with basic amenities all within easy reach, and a strong sense of community, and its twinned with the French village of Andouillé. There’s plenty of history to discuss here, and on the route we’ll see several notable buildings including a pub or two and the old village lock up.
