- Lucy Rose, a resident in flood-hit Retford whose home was damaged by Storm Babet, has told the environment secretary her home is "not a home anymore, it's a shell", during her visit to the town.
Ms Rose told Sky News "there was no real reason" for Therese Coffey to be in Retford and discussed the damage to her house and what lies ahead.

Honestly didn't realise she was still environment secretary. No wonder it's all gone wrong.

In all her time in office..she did nothing. She watched industries pour chemicals and waste into our waterways and rivers..Nothing was done. Coffee's tenure as Environmental Secretary was lazy, careless and hapless. I am glad she resigned. It seems she has removed herself because she has been told she is useless.
I live in the Netherlands where much of the country is below sea level - we last had flooding in 1952 and not one case in 70 years since - it is not so difficult.
its not a matter of difficulty but of political cowardice to address the problems caused by climate change. there have been plenty of warnings from experts that our emergency plans and disaster prevention infrastructure is unprepared to meet the evolving threat. i hope our government looks to places like the Netherlands to see how successful such defences can be when they are properly funded and prioritised by politicians.
we are an island nation with no part more than 100miles from the ocean, it doesn't take a genius to see why rising sea levels will be a problem.

In the Netherlands no place is more than 100 miles from the sea and we have huge rivers like the Rhine and the Meuse /Mass passing through our water management began long before global warming but was used to reclaim huge areas from the sea@@Simon-hb9rf

Was the flood barrier in place and installed correctly. I can see automatic Airbrick covers too. Probably 5,000 GBP of property level protection. Hopefully the inside is flood resilient too. What went wrong here ?

Hate politicians just using situations for media coverage but one thing I’m confused by. The lady said she needed help getting her 17 yr old daughter out of the house? Unless she has some physical troubles can’t she just walk out ? Don’t blame the fire brigade. Her neighbour could have helped while the emergency services helped people in real need.

Maybe if the environment agency did was they was meant to do a few years ago which was to build up the flood banks. That fell through. Rats and rabbits have burrowed into the banks, also the river idle towards misson and bawtry hasn't been dredged.
