I did some research and apparently Tom Cruise refused to have his likeness in the game because he had a distain for violent video games. I guess he had no problem with violence in movies though.
Many old farts to this day believe that video games unlike other entertainment mediums are kiddy stuff so violence in video games gets criticized alot.

As a kid I loved this game. Especially the Level in which you had to lure that woman into the bathroom and knock her out. I still remember it 20 years later
I loved this game as a kid. As well as Perfect Dark. But Conker's Bad Fur Day just blew me away. Very fond memories.

I was obsessed with this game when I was a kid. I remember a really gnarly glitch in the hospital level where the helicopter wouldn't spawn on the roof.
I loved this game, it looked so complex, the embassy mission was my favorite.
Fun fact: Tom Cruise has his appearance licenced. Thats why game developers can't make a character with his face.

I had this game as a kid. I actually liked this game. I never had as many problems with it like Nerd did with shooting, or jumping. Some levels were harder than other, but I enjoyed it.
When he said the best CD player ever: the PlayStation 1. I felt that.

I had PlayStation and Sega Saturn back then and I always much preferred the Sega Saturn mostly cause I could mess with the pitch and tone of the vocals.
I never remember anything skipping on the Saturn that the PlayStation would read. Could very well be possible though.

Metal Gear Solid came out the same year, so I wouldn’t exactly say MI is groundbreaking, even for it’s day.
@@tarantinoish Actually, this game was released almost two months before Metal Gear Solid and was based on a movie that was released two years prior, which itself was based on a TV show that initially aired 30 years earlier. In fact, the levels in this game play out like a stealth mission from the shows and movies, with the agents knocking people out, taking their identities, sabotaging equipment, faking documents, framing other people, and overall tricking the bad guys into doing what they want, so to say that Mission: Impossible isn't groundbreaking is a stretch. It makes me feel like I'm stepping into the shoes of an IMF agent. As Martin Landau, who played Rollin Hand on the TV show, stated in an interview, "Mission was a mind game. The ideal mission was getting in and getting out without anyone ever knowing we were there."

My theory for why Ethan Hunt in this game looks nothing like Tom Cruise is that they bought the rights for the IP but didn't bought the rights for Tom Cruise's likeness. Thats pretty common. Thats why in, for example, The Mask cartoon, Stanley Ipkiss looks nothing like Jim Carrey.
Normally yes, but apparently it was because he had a thing about video game violence.
Tom Cruise never licences out his likeness. That's why there are never any action figures based on his movie characters. Also why he never appears in video games based on his movies. I learned this from The Mummy Demastered videogame. Russell Crowe's character appears in the game, but not Tom Cruise.

ForeverLaxx Indeed. Conker's BFD is a fantastic game in every aspect, and probably the most technically impressive game in the system. AVGN isn't always about bad games (like Earthbound) so it'd be a great idea, especially with the humour.

As far as I know, Tom Cruise has in his contract part where he forbids any marketing material of himself in stuff like video games. That is why the Mumie demastered doesn't have him either.

I cannot tell you the hype I had this game whenever it was in Preview sections in Nintendo mag and Gamesmaster. Absolutely had no doubt it was going to be 'the next Goldeneye!'. Clearly I hadn't experienced much disappointment in my life at that point...
They hyped the AI so much in that Nintendo Power preview too. Like it was going to be this completely open world with brilliant AI and open-ended gameplay.
