10:02 I don't have Maya in front of me, but I believe if you hold down V when you moved down you could vertex snap to make sure is flat/aligned.

you can also select all of the vertexs u need then press R and scale the axis( in this case z) and brig it to center of scale tool
I would approach this model completely different. But it's always great to see how u go about stuff. There's always something to learn.
