    I’m currently a meteorology student and all of this was news decades ago. Data doesn’t lie when taken consistently and taken accurately. Basically climate change is an immovable object traveling at an unstoppable speed. We’ve been headed down this road for a long time and nothing is gonna get any better despite whatever governments decide to finally “do something”, but what that really means is humans would have no choice but to adapt to survive on a planet that’s changing beyond the control of ignorant apes like ourselves. No matter the road taken, floods persist.

Every degree the Earth's atmosphere goes up in temperature the atmosphere holds 7% more moisture. So does climate change make it rain? No. It makes these weather systems much more punishing. Clark County, Nevada has a rapid rescue unit. A valley is basically a bowl. Water runs down the sides, gaining momentum (6 inches deep rapid water can sweep a man off his feet; 12 inches can take out a car). There are natural washes running through Las Vegas; the Linq (formerly Imperial Palace) sits at the edge of one. The parking garage flooding shown there has happened for DECADES. Even with the huge number of man made retention basins, channels, and tunnels, it still turns into a raging river. Homeless people live in those tunnels; some of the remains being found at Lake Mead may well be some of them.

    • @aldoushuxleysghost
      @aldoushuxleysghost 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's dry most of the year, but tends to get hit hard by monsoon season. When the ground has been so dry for so long, the water doesn't easily soak into the ground, so a huge storm to kick things off really creates a mess

    • @SoutheastArizona
      @SoutheastArizona 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's only hard to wrap your head around flooding in the desert because you are not educated about deserts, including Nevada. Flash flooding is normal and common in the desert, especially during monsoon season, June thru September. Nevada gets snow in the winter as well.

    While entertaining to watch, this event is a nothing flood compared to what Las Vegas used to get, before it created flood channels and retention basins. Not to mention the valley used to get a lot more summer monsoon rains. In past decades, many streets turned into raging rivers. Now its just the Linq (formerly Imperial Palace), which sits at the edge of the Flamingo Wash, doing its typical garage flood. That resort is used to this happening.
    To address the water runoff remarks, yes, the water does run to Lake Mead, alway has, but won’t reverse the drought or the lake’s dropping level. It takes massive Rocky Mountains snowpack melt off to refill the lakes. This event is simply part of the annual summer monsoon season.

Water rose six inches above the road, and people continued to drive on it. Until a six foot high wall of water swept a station wagon off the road and into the raging flood channel below. Only one of the two occupants was eventually recovered. I suspect that more than one set of remains discovered in Lake Mead right now may be from flash flood related deaths.

I know others like the Colorado river are just as low. Given the number of floods across the country like the one this week in Kentucky, it looks more like the rivers are moving. Seriously, this flood was NOTHING compared to the flash flooding Las Vegas endured in past decades. The Las Vegas Valley has created many flood control channels and retention basins that divert and slow the flood waters. It’s rare to see a street turned into a river in Vegas nowadays. The garage flooding is due to the resort sitting on the Flamingo wash. It has ALWAYS flooded like this.

    Why is there more water in Las Vegas than in Lake Mead?

  • @roachtoasties
    @roachtoasties 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The city isn't prepared for downpours. I'm reading the statistics, and rainfall was between 0.75 and 1.38 inches. That's an average storm in most areas, but the hard ground in Las Vegas says otherwise. As for hotels flooding, I blame that on poor construction. If the roof in your house can't take that much rain, sue the builder.
