Found this: For clarification on his military orders there are several very significant points: I have been deployed from the Reserves several times, so I know how this works. First you get notice (not orders). You will then be given a date to report and put under temporary orders. The military does this to make sure you are not a liability to the government when getting deployed. They make sure you aren't pregnant, make sure you aren't a drug addict and give you a drug test, conduct some medical tests, etc. If you pass this, you are then given your official orders. Walz "retired" two months before his official orders, so he definitely knew they were getting deployed. He was also the Command Sergeant Major so he was the top enlisted solider in his unit, so he would be the very first person to know. Him and the commanding officer. Also, you don't accept a Command Sergeant Major (top pay grade of E-9) position and then retire....UNLESS you retire to avoid going to a war zone, which it appears is exactly what he did. This is also why it is reported that he was eventually demoted to Master Sergeant (pay grade E-8) because he didn't fulfill his commitment to that position.
