    While I hate executive meddling I think going for a lighter tone was a good choice for the first movie. Starting off from a simple, hopeful place before getting into the messed up stuff helps the movies have a sense of progression with the darkness slowly creeping in.

      Agreed, there is definitely progression in the trilogy in more ways than one, and that's why I love it so. The continuity in the movies with recurring characters and their growth, and locations still being wrecked from past monster battles and the references made to them throughout, that helps with world building a lot ultimately. By the last movie, you get to see what Gamera is like minus the human connection; a force of nature unleashed and unrestrained with minimal concern for the tiny human insects under his feet, which makes Honami's words at the end of "G2" all the more frightening.

    It’s astonishing that these movies are so overlooked. They are downright some of the BEST examples of how to do a reboot, a kaiju movie, and a trilogy, and I am SO upset that they are rarely to never talked about outside of the kaiju fanbase.
    I really hope these movies get some form of theatrical rerun so the public can be more aware of these masterpieces.

      Frankly, I'm extremely grateful that Tokusatsu as a whole has not gone completely mainstream. US studios and audiences have a MASSIVE ego problem where they don't respect the source material; they only care about changing it to something that they themselves can understand. Whatever it was beforehand never matters to them, and any fans who get upset by the changes are accused of gatekeeping.

      I've seen people who aren't godzilla fans accuse godzilla fans of being close minded and hypocritical to change and new ideas regarding godzilla 1998 even though again....these people aren't fans and are missing the entire point of why godzilla fans disliked that film years ago and why that film fails as a godzilla film. We aren't gatekeeping for making valid criticism towards something drastically changed to the point it doesn't represent the source material properly.
      Only times gatekeeping is probably necessary is when a non fan tries to act like they know more than even the average godzilla or tokusatsu fan

    Heisei Gamera didn't just redefine the title monster, it redefined the kaiju genre. Special effects were totally off the charts, at times even beating out TOHO during this period, IMO. I can't praise these Gamera films enough for the spectacle and the sheer magic they provided for viewers. I never get tired of rewatching them. My personal fave is Gamera vs. Legion. And you just can't beat a flying Gamera that resembles a giant hurling shuriken. Thank you for this retrospective.

  • @michaelriverside1139

    One thing that I love about this particular era is how overwhelming are the forces that Gamera fights, he's constantly bleeding and at the edge of defeat, but rather than glorifying something like channeling the Mana around the world to stop the legion, it's rather ambiguous for that leaves him at the mercy of Gyaos and Iris, even the final shot of the trilogy finale is in the words of it's director "About faith, if you believe he defeats the horde of Gyaos, then he probably will, if not, then it's all lost"...
    While Godzilla is destruction incarnated and re-incarnated, Gamera is the equivalent in hope , something that leaves me thinking on how Gamera the Brave is sort of a spiritual sequel to the Heisei Trilogy, for it begins with a battle against a horde of Gyaos, yet Gamera sacrifices itself to destroy them and the whole movie is about him regaining it's very name.
    Such an incredible series, I hope that Rebirth anime is better than the Netflix Anime Godzilla ones...

    • @kcadventures1454

    • @marhawkman303

      Another key thing is in Gamera 2 and 3.... Gamera NEEDs the Humans to save him. It's not like in Godzilla where, not always, but often, the Humans basically fail at life all movie... In Gamera, the Humans may not be as powerful as Kaiju, but they get stuff done.
      Also.... the ending of Gamera 3... has an implication that is... weird. Ayana... who is arguably the true villain of the movie.... apparently goes off to raise a family with the guy who was working as the guardian of the shrine she stole the Iris egg from. I guess he's going to make sure she stays out of trouble for the next 50 years or so? hehehe....

      @@m.valdivia8048 It is a stretch because for some reason you can't praise it without bringing Godzilla into this. Like it can't support itself like this series has some younger sibling syndrome. I even think that 90s Gamera does win with Heisie Godzilla in most categories (but not all of them and frankly I'm more likely to watch Godzilla more often). And likewise Heisei Godzilla was a success as it ended on its own terms to critical and financial (better than Gamera's not that box office dictates what is better but speaking of "dethroning"). I think 1995-2006 Gamera movies are up there with the best of the genre but overall as a franchise, as an icon, as the "king" there's just no competition. I'd be like saying Mission Impossible is greater than James Bond because the audience connects better to MI than the current generation of Bond.

    The three best daikaiju movies made, without a doubt. I liked your assessment of them. One thing I'd like to mention as well is how the female characters grow and progress throughout the trilogy, with Dr. Nagamine and Asagi both becoming stronger and more assertive by the third movie. Dr. Nagamine's outburst at the hospital when attempting to rescue Ayana is a good example of this, because most of the time in Japan people just don't do such things, never mind women. That and Honami in "Attack of Legion" being as spunky and outgoing and energetic as she is throughout. She's a great character, because she's not a wallflower. Also, the arc that Inspector Osako undergoes throughout the trilogy is one of the most notable character arcs in all the movies, I think. I remember goggling at the level of destruction in the first Gamera battle in "Revenge of Irys" the first time I saw it, because that is, as you mentioned, not something you saw in daikaiju movies at the time. I only own "Gamera the Brave" because I'm a completist, and I don't care for it near as much as the trilogy. But yes, I watch the trilogy frequently and absolutely love it.

    Gotta return to this video to say that, in my opinion, GAMERA REBIRTH was a totally successful revival of the character. If Gamera The Brave was "E.T., but with Gamera", then Rebirth was "Stranger Things, but with Gamera". A fantastic blend of the Showa monster cast, the horror and mythological elements of the Kaneko trilogy, and the focus on a compelling core cast of child characters from The Brave. Only issue with it is the one thing that's always plagued Gamera, a low budget. Monster fights look great but the human scenes look pretty wonky. Hopefully that can be fixed in future seasons!

    I enjoy the second i.e. Legion the most. There's just so much I enjoy about it. It's just G3 is like a fine wine. I grow a fonder appreciation and love for it. It's just I enjoy the first more just in the way it introduces all the main players. The foundation it lays forth for in the first film. Gamera 3 is my favorite kaiju film ever. It contains what I think is the most accurate portrayal of what actual kaiju battles would play out like in the real world, and deals with the personal cost such tragedies would incur. It also blends fantasy and spiritual elements into the plot, questioning whether something as small as humanity is worth jeopardizing the fate of the planet over in the face of conflicting forces beyond our understanding. The effects are also (mostly) top notch to this day, and the monster designs are unbelievably creative.
    That said, while I like much of the films ambiguity, I feel like Iris does get a fairly concise explanation, thanks Kurata, and it ties perfectly with the theme in the movie: Iris was created specifically to kill Gamera if humanity ever became a threat to the planet's survival, in order to allow the gyaos to wipe us out.

Gamera the brave is a really underated film its not perfect but absolutely enjoyable. When I was binging kaiju movies at the peak of my kaiju hype, I found many of Heisei Godzilla movies boring for me, even though they have really cool kaiju designs. The stories just don't gel with me. But with Heisei Gamera, every single entry is a win. Gamera the Brave especially is so fresh. It has some Showa silliness but it's also so sincere. I think the Gamera movies just did the dreaded "human sections" way better than most.

    Netflix's anime Gamera Rebirth is out and it does Gamera proud. Godzilla continues to almost monopolize the international public's attention and interest (and will likely stay that way for a long time),, but there is plenty of room for other Kaiju whether legacy monsters like Gamera or the newer giant mecha/kaiju fusion or who knows what else. Kaiju is going to be around for a long long time.

    I want a gamera movie where he straight up becomes the villain. Pollution, overpopulation, harming the earth and all that leads to gamera deciding to just hunt down humans like gyaos and wipe out humans in countries that are too polluted and overpopulated. Leading to other countries that aren’t on his bad side yet refusing to change and choosing to kill gamera cuz it’s easier to kill instead of ridding bad habits while the citizens panic and fight over if gamera needs to die. Governors constantly at each others throats and making choices out of fear. If they kill gamera the gyaos get to do whatever they want and gamera isn’t going down easy
    Actually this would make a cool mothra movie too but without the threat of the gyaos being unstoppable

      The original gamera from 1965 is the closest to a villain he's become, other than that, gamera is either a full blown hero or an anti hero like he was in the heisei era

    • @Dookieman1975
      @Dookieman1975 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Kaiju-bm4ts in ROI it would just take a few more decades of bs to get him to kill us. I’d say that’s when he leaned towards an anti hero, just stopped caring if people got hurt. Now I think of it even if he killed humans to save the earth idk if that’s that villainous. I guess antagonist since he’s still doing something heroic but we’re the ones committing villainous acts. Eh he’s still classified as a villain in public opinion anyways. And if they’re willing to have so much messed up stuff in the heisei era where he was at his peak, they’ll make changes with even more moral dilemmas

    • @Kaiju-bm4ts
      @Kaiju-bm4ts ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Dookieman1975 dude he was sort of already an anti hero in the trilogy already, g3 just captured that anti heroic side much better. He was never truly on humanity's side from the start. Maybe in g1 he was fighting for humanity and earth since he had a connection to asagi and she can confirm his thoughts to be legitimate and is still certain as the trilogy goes on but humanity is only part of the earth, gamera cares about both but not equally.
      Also battra cared for the planet but wanted humans gone and same with godzilla earth, it's somewhat villainous if a character is wiping out both innocent and bad lives to save the planet. That's called being anti villainous, doing something that can be seen as villainous by action but still understandable by goal. Polar opposite to how anti heroes still morally good things but for their own selfish reasons. Neither anti villains or anti heroes care what the public thinks of them anyway which makes them morally gray characters.
      If anything, heisei gamera is closer to being anti heroic than anything else,

    • @Kaiju-bm4ts
      @Kaiju-bm4ts 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      "Millennium" is only a term for godzilla's 3rd era. 1 movie can't be a whole era.
      Kadokawa sees gamera the brave as part of the heisei era of gamera despite it's not connected to the heisei trilogy. This is evident by the 2009/10 and 2016 blu ray/4k heisei gamera sets released by kadokawa that has both the trilogy and the brave simultaneously.
      Keep in mind too, showa, heisei and reiwa are all Japanese terms relating to the Japanese emperors. The emperor of the showa period died in 1989, thus the heisei political era of Japan began despite the heisei universe of godzilla already began in 1984. The heisei political era of Japan didn't end til 2019 thus that's where the reiwa era came in despite fans personally seeing shin gojira as the starting point for said era in this franchise.
      But in terms of franchises, gamera only has 3 eras, showa, heisei, reiwa.

    We can agree millennium era gamers movie is cannon to heisei it makes sense and I wish they continue that series but thankfully we got more gamera from rebirth which had awesome designs also we can agree gamera is either a robot or a cyborg or a biological weapon not just because he was made by Atlantis but also because he has green (possibly oil) blood also him hating carrots and likes oil and fire it's obvious he is not an animal

    • @Kaiju-bm4ts
      @Kaiju-bm4ts 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's not a millennium movie, it's a heisei gamera film that's not connected to the trilogy. The term millennium era only applies to godzilla's franchise. Not other tokusatsu IPs. Kadokawa sees gamera the brave as part of the heisei gamera era (both from a political standpoint and franchise standpoint). The heisei political era of Japan didn't end til 2019. Gamera is a bioengineered kaiju, he's not a robot or a cyborg as he bleeds and has bones like any natural creature would.

    The gamera trilogy might be better than the Heisei Godzilla era. Better action and better characters (why was the psychic so protective of Godzilla when Godzilla kills so many people? • @ShHeMiLeRe
      @ShHeMiLeRe ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dookieman1975 I mean how it's generally always presented like it's never enough to praise 90s Gamera everyone has to mention Godzilla too and overcompensate, which is something you generally don't see when it's something else like 1954 Godzilla that's probably the most popualr candidate for the greatest monster movie of all time, but it doesn't need to be announced.
      Heisei Godzilla has better music, that's a big one but there's another that I value, which is the way it handles monsters within a story. How they're treated as characters that can surprise you, they can develop over time, they have motivations, the movies care about them. Which is something you missed when you called Godzilla just an animal. 90s Gamera took a more symbolic approach not that Gamera isn't a character, but he's more similar to Millennium or Reiwa era Toho monsters with less pathos and more focus on how the monsters existence affects the humans around them.

    • @Kaiju-bm4ts
      @Kaiju-bm4ts ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@ShHeMiLeRe same way fans call the heisei era of godzilla the best also counts as overselling it?. The heisei era is good but it has obvious glaring issues, it's ironic you even bring up gojira when honda didn't even like the heisei era. Said era also acknowledges how said characters effect humanity or the earth in some way or form while giving them personalities just like what heisei gamera did.
      Comparing gamera to the emotionless, mostly wasted kaiju of the reiwa era and the half and half good or bad executed kaiju characters of the millennium era while simultaneously acknowledging gamera is still has a character is a bit contradictory and a bit insulting towards gamera. Especially when in terms of quality, the heisei era of gamera and even godzilla put more work into their craft than the millennium and reiwa eras did.
      Kaneko summarized the trilogy perfectly. G1: Sci fi, G2: war movie, G3: spiritual/otherworldly. If you're saying heisei godzilla has better music (which is debatable but the music is definitely more iconic) then the heisei era of gamera has better fights with more diversity outside of spamming.

      @Kaiju-bm4ts ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dookieman1975 I mean....to be fair godzilla doesn't kill people without care in the heisei era or any era for that matter when kills on accident without knowing it (sort of like you stepping on bugs in the grass without knowing it) or he kills us when we attack him first so it's basically self defense.
      You also have to acknowledge godzilla starts out as a antagonist in his heisei era, gamera was a protagonist from day 1 in his era. Gamera is meant to uplift hope for each entry, heisei godzilla was more neutral, he was either punishing us or was the lesser of two evils
