  • Croatia has become the latest country to adopt the euro as its currency, formally joining the eurozone as well as the Schengen area of free movement.
"This is a great achievement for Croatia," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. "A symbol of its deep-rooted attachment to the EU, and a symbolic moment for the euro area as a whole."
People in Croatia will be able to continue to use the Croatian Kuna as well as the euro, for a short transitional period over the next two weeks.
Croatia is the first country to join the Schengen zone in 11 years.

I think plenty of people who comment with foam coming out of their mouth don't understand what is the situation with currencies around the world (Brits * cough*). Whenever there are some global financial issues of any kind, the weaker currencies are getting hit much harder than Euro, even those of much larger countries than Croatia like Poland. Also Croatia is relying a lot on its tourism and many Croatians work abroad, so it is a helpful simplification. Personally I really love the name Kuna and its history, quite unique when compared to usual derivatives of goldens and crowns rampant through Europe, it is certainly a part of Croatian heritage, but ultimately money are but a tool.

I'm certain you don't understand why it's important for an economy as large as the UK's to have control of its own currency by your (Brits * cough*) comment. It's nothing to do with nostalgia for the £ or being anti-EU, I'm 100% pro-EU, but giving away control of our currency would be a huge mistake.

euro can be a double edged sword. Just see Greece and how they have to rely on Germany to get capital within their country.
Euro is a modern day gold standard where countries like Greece can’t print money when they most need it. They have to rely on the good graces of the bigger European economies.
That being said, the euro is only behind the USD and provides stability and ease of access to capital from Europe.

@@Christian-ut5um Well I do live in Poland so I do know a bit about it first hand :P The 2008-2009 crisis resolution was mainly about spending policy (even more so since we never really overstretched ourselves like some other countries), not currency per se, although we were initially hit disproportionately hard because our currency was deemed "weak" by international markets and all the speculation. I vividly recall planning a trip to US with friends back then, coast to coast, it was all reasonable... and then PLN was just obliterated. Everytime somethings happens around the world, the imports prices go haywire. Can't count times something went out of my budget capability just because I was using PLN instead of EUR/GBP/USD.
Also I would hope EU's control has tightened up since Greece's case. I just remember how poor Greece was before joining. I don't know if I'm controversial, but I would lash them more for it and demand all the politicians responsible to be put to justice for what transpired.

With the Euro, Croatia will absorb all the inflation resulting from the monetary expansion that the EU does without any mechanism to control it, the cost of living will rise to the level of other countries with the same currency, but it does not mean that salaries will also rise, most likely not. The best thing to lower inflation is to lower fiscal spending, lower taxes, facilitate investment and business creation, not having a central bank or having an autonomous one that does not allow politicians to carry out monetary expansion practices as was the case in Chile, but the EU does the opposite.

It's bad news that Croatia will lose the sovereignty of their currency, now with the Euro, they will have no way to control inflation since they will depend on the economic decisions of the EU, for example. Every time The EU decide to print money, inflation will rise, and the cost of living will also rise. It's unfortunate, I think it's a very bad idea to leave the Kuna behind.

The report is a little misleading. It's not an instant transition, as far as I understand kuna will still be accepted for a few weeks, and people will have the whole year to exchange their kuna into euros. But as someone from the United States who adores Europe's concept of unity between nations, I am proud of Croatia for participating in the European project and Europe for conceiving it. May today be a step closer to a European Federation.
