I have an addition!: The Swedish dub has a part that basically endorses anorexia, in the song where one of the characters is going to be a princess they say “You shouldn’t eat more of those, you should be thin!” In the original it was something like “you don’t want them, give them to me!” I have absolutely no idea why this was added but oh my god it did
It’s in the episode Princess Problems: Bon Bon’s line is, “You don’t want these jelly beans: give ‘em all to me”, since six of the friends are preparing Patch to meet the royal parents
Bon Bon's brother being named Pony wouldn't surprise me when Meadowlark's (Clover's sister) husband is named Cheval (litteraly just horse in french) Also the diaper fetish theory might be true, the same writer from shop talk also wrote an episode of super mario bros 3 where Mario and Luigi get turned into babies
I think the reason ‘Sweet Music’ sounds so familiar is because it’s a completely different style from the rest of the songs in the series. The other songs have more of a late 80’s/early 90’s style, while ‘Sweet Music’ sounds similar to a lot of 50’s pop/rock songs. As pinkie pie says, Just a hunch.
i love your videos they're great, though the only nitpick i have is that you don't play the audio of what topic you're talking about like the stock laugh or clover saying fortune that sounds like 4chan (unless it's to avoid copyright issues which is completly understandable)
In some older movies and tv shows, the guys who thought they were tough were obsessed with their hair and we're always flinging black styling combs around. I think it originates from the movie version of Grease where Danny Zuko and the T-Birds do that. Originally they were going to have knives but the sensors at the time thought that would be inappropriate and changed it to Combs. But I can kind of see Teddy as having a secret aspiration to be a barber or men's hairdresser.
I love to see content about MLP that isn’t just G4, MLP has always been a comfort show for me ever since I was a kid watching those old 80’s MLP movies and it’s cool to hear people talk about the earlier stuff
I swear I've seen a character model sheet for MLP Tales (can't recall where) that was meant to show the animators the proportions of an adult pony compared to the protaogonist ponies compared to a baby pony (toddler) etc, and it did have a separate character model for Bon Bon and notes in the margin about her being chonkier than the other ponies. The strange thing is that visually her character model is barely any different from the other characters. Like it's the TINIEST difference.
MLP Tales makes me nostalgic. I had an entire month of my life at the age of five where all I would watch was The Care Bears Movie II on repeat, so it reminds me of that style of animation and time period.
I think its because the show was the first exspance to the characters having distinct and complex personalities. The original had some of that as does G3 but tales has a lot more of it. In original G1 and G3 the ponies had personalities but there were massive numbers of them with the same or very similar personalities, tales focus on less main characters made them able to flesh the main characters out. Something they perfected by FIM and could apply it to more characters.

So that song, "Sweet Music," reminds me of half of the Grease Soundtrack, especially with the instrumentals. Also, parts of the melody are strikingly similar to the song "Freckles," which is the opening theme song for Rorouni Kenshin. (The original Japanese version is called "Sobakasu")
Hot take : This was my favorite older gen series. The characthers are fun and relatable-espeically Bon Bon for me AS kid. I always related to her so much.
agreed!!! I actually loved this show when I was like 11-12. I still do, though I do see the problems it has lol Bon Bon was and still is my fave, she's so cute and I can just totally picture her as a real life girl way more than I can the others - I really liked the fact that they were pre-teens/teens (unclear their exact age) it was fun to watch a my little pony take place in a more human world. I love all things 80s too, so that probably helped in my liking this.
In terms of watching past gen mlp shows, i've only seen bits and pieces of My Little Pony Tales, i mean i think i've only watched like 3 or 4 episodes, but that was it.
Patch could be a sorta symbolic meaning. Maybe it means that she has to live with what she could, which makes sense because her broth parents are unknown and she’s adopted.

Just wanted to say for the Bon Bon has diabetes theory, that’s not how it works. Type 1 diabetes is your body isn’t able to produce insulin, so when your blood sugar gets high (usually after you eat something), you have to get a shot of insulin to lower it back down. The only time you need to eat is if your blood sugar gets low and even then you don’t need to eat as much as Bon Bon does. What she most likely would have is hypoglycemia. I feel half the things in this video were dumb, funny stuff and the other half were super introspective and well thought out. Either way, I want to watch this show now, so thanks for the video!
1:45, yeah I noticed that when I watched that documentry. I had remembered seeing G2 ponies, they were made when MLP had been out of popularity for years, they didn't think it was worth putting a show out and MLP had done semi-well despite things considered so didn't bother with a show. The thing is... The newer pony models were very different and slightly more horse-like in shape then past models. G3 they realised, a TV show works and so they made one... But.... They missed what made G1 popularity. It was the fantasy element. G3 had that but... It was made for little children. What made G1 worked was, the show wasn't just baby'ed down for kids, it was made and put out as a show that despite being aimed for kids had some nice story telling. G3 also didn't really flesh out its world it just introduced characters who only had slight changes in personnalities but were the same oveall cookie-cutter mould. G4 returned to the fantasy and gave it more clarity, lore and fleshed everything out. And it worked! It was everything G1 was and oh so much better. Now for G5 their going with a lot of that generations elements and their just building on it. But the thing about G4 was, it was so enjoyable that honestly? It wasn't just successful in terms of toys, it was successful as a franchise. The characers also, forgot to mention were distinct. While this made a lot of popular and unpopular characters, the popular characters were for a reason popular because they were enjoyable. G4 made a world that was huge, filled with all sorts of things. MLP could have gone on for a bit longer, but all things have to come to an end. One thing that did make G4 distinct was having characters with a sense of direction too. Rarity was going to be opening fashion shops all across Equesteria, Rainbow Dash was going to be a Wondebolt, etc. I think over time, Hasbro has learnt a good show sells a product.
The alicorns were tie-ins to actual MLPs being sold. They were released as a group and I swear they had opaque bodies since they had a celestial theme. 17:08 The Barringtons were also part of several Pony Families on shelves.
I used to browse a lot of old gen 1/mlp tales fan sites, including the site teddies place, which had fanfiction and toy edits done of G1/63 ponies to look like teddy and the boy ponies
If I were writing Starlight Maybe I could write her with a lack of confidence and quite nervous due to her being a leader and the responsibility the position contains but she would be able to keep a cool head in dangerous situations and keep her friends safe. Maybe Starlight could have a secret love for anything space related and that's why she has her cutie mark like how Teddy may have a love for men's hairdressing
14:59 “people who look into the earlier generations of mlp might start to notice a trend where at the end of every successful generation of the toy line,” directly leads into “g1 did it with tales, g3 did it with the ponyvile spin-off line, and g4 did it with pony life. Weird how it’s never worked, and yet hasbro’s done it three times already.” I think maybe there was supposed to be something explaining what exactly “it” is here, inbetween these two line reads. My best guess is that this section is talking about spin-offs for successful generations. But it was a little weird to see you lead into saying something, and then just not complete your thought.
This is so trippy... I remember like 90% of the scenes. It's been around 30 years since I've seen any of these, when I was like 4... I remember the story on some of these episodes or at least what happens next, as soon as I see the scene I immediately remember the visuals and how I felt emotionally watching it... I remember watching these more than just a few times... I used to be obsessed about generation 1 MLP... And I had no idea for 3 decades... o.O That somewhat explains my obsession with gen 4... XD It's just weird to discover it... Backwards... I don't exactly care for the visuals that much... But I do remember the strong emotional connection. 16:45 I remember these guys. I thought they looked really cool. XD
Jesus Christ I kind of just remembered Bullwinkle and the remove the knob from television bit never even thought anything of it till you mentioned it. I remember that being a thing that was mentioned and little adverts for the cartoon the whole don't touch that dial kind of thing back in the day. Using blackmail to foil a villain in a storyline has actually been more common than you might think in 1970s and 80s cartoon it's something that's been done quite a few times usually the hero character will threaten to reveal something embarrassing about the villain and ironically the tactic works for the hero yet the other way around when the villain does it it goes bad for the villain kind of double standards. Watched a lot of Animation from the 60s and 70s when I was growing up in the 80s so I've seen a lot of the more obscure stuff along with a lot of 80 stuff that people forget. I wasn't even aware of my little pony tails but you got to remember I watched maybe two episodes of My Little Pony back in the 80s if that show didn't do much for me.
It's kinda ironic that the silly, short lived spinoff series is actually the darkest one of the whole franchise. Because it features the one villain no magical horse, God, or human can truly defeat: Climate change. Oh, and since "Who's Responsible" was the last episode, the episode ends with little resolution to its conflict, and we never see these ponies in any future generations, we can safely assume that this cute, peppy pony society was eventually wiped out by its own pollution. Sweet dreams, little girls of the 90's!
I remember when FIM came out me and a friend watched most of the old MLP and it's dark man, one ep had a human child kidnap some baby pony's and had them in metal collars and chains one of them kind of looked dead.
5:30 the more unnatural hooves look better than G5’s “magic” hooves in my opinion, atleast for when they dont have magic. Suspendion of disbelief for me is just wild with magic
Hey Shunks, thank you for doing this entire analysis of MLPT. Your video inspired me to make several videos on the series myself. Many of the ideas came from your video. You can find them in the coming weeks on my channel!
1. The voice swap error was actually quite common in some 80's-90's shows. Mom was watching the first few episodes of the first TMNT with us and noticed Raph's voice was coming out of Donnie for a single line. Another example of this was those old Mario cartoons (Super Show and the other 2). I specifically remember one scene where Luigi told Mario that it was a good thing they had something I forgot, but Luigi's voice was coming out of Mario, so Mario was basically talking to himself about it (not to mention this was on top of another error where the colours of their outfits were completely wrong), and another scene in another episode where Princess Toadstool was asking a cave-Toad why he was seemingly talking about mashed potatoes, but her voice was coming from Luigi's mouth. A shocking error at first glance 2. I actually remember watching a similar YTP which was basically the same video, but instead of just "Pony" being replaced with "Pingas", it was every noun (it even had one of the Tales songs given the same treatment as a bonus). I think we might've seen the same video
Lancer's Teddy Bear Frame is seriously freaking me out. I don't know why but its going to haunt my dreams. IM NOT JOKING ITS SO SCARY WTF ITS SENDING SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE lol anyways good video
As a longtime peripheral in the G1 "fandom" (mainly through both my sister's former enthusiasm and the brony phenomenon) since the early 2010s, I deeply appreciate the existence of videos such as these, particularly given the oddly vitriolic revisionism the brony fandom of old frequently imposed upon previous MLP generations (which were resultantly stigmatically labelled as merely "garbage for little girls" without any specific further analysis). MLP Tales' mere existence has fascinated me for years - I cannot fathom why Hasbro executives believed that the most adequate vehicle for marketing a toyline of neon-colored sentient horses was a Doug-esque slice-of-life series, but I can't deny that the show's odd amalgam of zany humor and noticeably out-of-touch attempts at capturing early 90s tween culture wield a certain unironic charm to me (particularly when compounded by the latent fantasy elements the show occasionally gestured towards, such as Squire's ghost and Brightglow's band of "aliens"). On a mostly-related note, several of the photos of the Tales UK comics shown in the videos are actually mine from around 2013 (I never figured I'd see the day when my old house's shag carpet would appear in a reasonably-popular YT video, but here we are). I've been collecting the UK comic series (both Tales and pre-Tales) since 2012 and they're a weirdly interesting encapsulation of G1's evolution at large - both comic series are abruptly hard-rebooted from high fantasy adventures to the Tales continuity around 1993 (with virtually no explanation beyond "they're on holiday", hilariously enough) and proceed to screw up the color schemes of most of the secondary cast (I'm guessing that at least some users have seen photos of a red Teddy and green Ace drifting around the web) for most of the following year. While, as you noted, bowdlerized for a younger audience than the TV show, it's nonetheless neat seeing the cast in a parallel-yet-officially-approved form.
Maybe the reason we dont see winged/horned ponies in this series is because all the seperate races(?) of ponies now livecaway from eachother durning/after g5 and we only ever see the story from the earth pony's perspective. We see pegasy once aswell as an alicorn as they probably come from a place where theyve settled somewhere else. Earth ponies were kinda forgotten about in g4 as being appart of alicorn magic (hell originally thec2 sisters were just labled as unicorn-pegasy hybrids untill the first hearthwarming ep. So maybe pegasy/unicorns exist together still.
Funny you say that, because [SPOILER ALERT] the G5 movie actually does have all the different pony races living separately. Not only that, there's even an amount of racism going on, as Earth ponies are scared of unicorn horns/magic and of pegasi snatching them off the ground and flying away, despite the fact that, after some crazy thing happenied between G4's and G5's events (yes G5 takes place eons after G4 ended), unicorns no longer have magic, and pegasi can't fly anymore. Those 2 races also both think Earth ponies are all stupid hillbillies. Not to mention alicorns in this future are nowhere to be seen, as either they're all dead or somewhere super remote to the point of where their existence is debated. I haven't watched the movie myself, but I did watch a few reviews, so it could be a similar instance
I was rewatching all your icebergs and was pondering what Sweet Music sounded like to me-the instrumental kind of reminds me of that of Teenager in Love by Dion and the Belmonts, and a little like The Look of Love by Lesley Gore also. It definitely has a 50s-60s vibe to it.
The ugly Swedish DVDs are my guilty pleasures. I’m always looking for them to collect, but currently only have two. Because they’re not the stuff you’ll usually see in thrift stores and stuff, but someday I hope to have them all.
I know you say it’s weird and parts of the show including the songs could have been better, but it’s still awesome and inspiring to me since I first watched it.
I sometimes make these characters human when playing the Sims 2 and when I was able to play Sims 3 before the game broke for being incompatible with Mac El Captain. I always make Bon Bon fat. But to make her name seem more human I call her Bonnie and I call Bright Eyes, Bridget. Patch becomes Pat. Sweetheart becomes Sweetie because I can never think of anything else. Maybe I should call her Bliss instead? Starlight becomes Star. Whereas Melody and Clover get to keep their names.
Not showing money is a trope that G4 did away with. Lots of kids shows leave you wondering if they use barter or what. In other words, just because you don't see them getting paid, doesn't mean they are slaves.
@@claudevanvlack2306 G4 showed it is possible to trade your friend to actual slavery. The only reason it was side stepped was because of a bullshit law... seriously Rainbow Dash almost made Fluttershy a slave.
18:55 Well that was pretty pointless of Hasbro Why promote Tales in the UK if it NEVER AIRED HERE! If I were them It'd probably either get BBC, ITV or Channel 4 to broadcast it But then again There were a handful of UK VHS and DVD releases of the show so the mane 7 did end up on Kids tv screens in the UK after all
Brad Swaile (Light from Death Note) actually got his start voicing Ace in this show. He said later that Ace was the closest he came to a villain role before Death Note.
The alicorn fact is sorta incorrect. Back in 1985 an animation error caused one character to be alicorn in a few scenes. However it doesn’t reallly count cause it wasn’t intentional
Ironically, the theories are more interesting than the show itself. Though I will give the show partial credit for not being the absolute worst thing to come from MLP, even if a tad bit boring at times.
It’s because at the time,Disney channel was a premium channel and not everyone got the channel.I grew up with not getting the channel because my parents couldn’t afford the premium channels at the time.I only had basic cable at the time (1992-1993)
I think I’ve actually found the YTP that features the Sparta remix you mentioned: th-cam.com/video/2sZL2g57pwA/w-d-xo.html

Bon Bon's brother being named Pony wouldn't surprise me when Meadowlark's (Clover's sister) husband is named Cheval (litteraly just horse in french)

In Bon Bon's Diary, Teddy mentions that his dad grounded him because he failed his test, at least we know that one of his parents is still alive.
His mother speaks through a door in Shop Talk.
A different theory is that Teddy comes from an abusive background, and that’s why he acts out

14:59 “people who look into the earlier generations of mlp might start to notice a trend where at the end of every successful generation of the toy line,” directly leads into “g1 did it with tales, g3 did it with the ponyvile spin-off line, and g4 did it with pony life. Weird how it’s never worked, and yet hasbro’s done it three times already.”
I think maybe there was supposed to be something explaining what exactly “it” is here, inbetween these two line reads. My best guess is that this section is talking about spin-offs for successful generations. But it was a little weird to see you lead into saying something, and then just not complete your thought.
I've always said that the Ticket episodes of both Tales and Fim was very similar!
And honestly tales did it better since there's no deus ex machina solving the problem at the end
Good luck in Collage Shunks!!
And I had no idea for 3 decades... o.O
That somewhat explains my obsession with gen 4... XD
It's just weird to discover it...
I wasn't even aware of my little pony tails but you got to remember I watched maybe two episodes of My Little Pony back in the 80s if that show didn't do much for me.
shunks your content is always so good
It's kinda ironic that the silly, short lived spinoff series is actually the darkest one of the whole franchise.
The glowing ponies and the members of Melody's band were also toys in the G1 line.
I remember when FIM came out me and a friend watched most of the old MLP and it's dark man, one ep had a human child kidnap some baby pony's and had them in metal collars and chains one of them kind of looked dead.
Having enjoyed Gen 1 when I was little made it that much easier for me to become a Brony when Friendship is Magic came along!
These are really high quality iceberg videos dude, Keep up the awesome work!
13:03
I actually OWN the firefly pony as a toy and I got so excited when I heard them mention it!
Please, make a g3 iceberg video! It was my childhood, I wanna know more!
I Started watching My Little Pony in 2013 to 2014
I started watching when it came out, since I was a hub kid. It was really boring waiting for new episodes
@@Rose-zo1oo Me too Good Old Times
ok
I started watching MLP this year
@@societyofcriminals eyyo welcome to the herd!
I watch on Tubi and I love the bumpers! I had no idea they were considered lost media.
I was not expecting the IT reference 😭 I can never escape it.... literally....
5:30 the more unnatural hooves look better than G5’s “magic” hooves in my opinion, atleast for when they dont have magic. Suspendion of disbelief for me is just wild with magic
I always noticed melody and firefly looking similar!
Edit: Izzy also looks like them lol
Hey Shunks, thank you for doing this entire analysis of MLPT. Your video inspired me to make several videos on the series myself.
Many of the ideas came from your video. You can find them in the coming weeks on my channel!
This series gives me a nostalgia for older cartoons even though I never watched it as a kid
A shocking error at first glance
2. I actually remember watching a similar YTP which was basically the same video, but instead of just "Pony" being replaced with "Pingas", it was every noun (it even had one of the Tales songs given the same treatment as a bonus). I think we might've seen the same video
One time when I was 8 I was sick home from school and I watched the entirety of mlp tales. Only time I’ve watched it lol
Great video! Can you do an iceberg video on g1? The series is rather good, there are many villans, characters and episodes that people don't know.🐎
Birth of the Smoose. :)
Your sona is rlly cute :D good video
Lancer's Teddy Bear Frame is seriously freaking me out. I don't know why but its going to haunt my dreams.
IM NOT JOKING ITS SO SCARY WTF ITS SENDING SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE
lol anyways good video
I can't wait until your mlp g1 iceberg video is here
Lol. Miss Hackneys cutiemark is a chalkboard because she is a teacher and Patch jas a patch because she likes to fix and build things.
There was not room for 1+1=2 so they just used 2.
i swear there is gonna be a Pony Life iceberg
Of course somehow Chris's nonsense found it's way here lmao.
Funny you say that, because [SPOILER ALERT]
the G5 movie actually does have all the different pony races living separately.
1992 was a really good year for me
I was born in that year myself
I was 7 years old at the time in 2nd grade playing with the Sega Genesis.
Hey, this is really nice. Thanks Shunks!
2:45 Wasnt this a joke in the Grim adventures of Billy and Mandy?
33:33 I thought it's Surprise, white pegasus with blond mane
yo i loved this shit as a kid, it still has a very special place in my heart...
Oh :0 I was looking forward to this after watching the stream!
I watch Mlp Tales and it's from my childhood and I really love it too
About that Slavery.jpg...
have none of these folks herd of those places that have people pull carts? Like that is a thing.
@@cameoshadowness7757 That's the 4th generation iceberg. If there's a monarchy, are there serfs? Taxation without adequate representation?
@@claudevanvlack2306 maybe maybe not but we are shown too little to truely say.
Also Tales did show money as well on multiple occasions.
To add onto 33:16 , there's a song in the movie called Let's Have a Battle (Battle of the Bands) so I kinda feel like this theory has some merit.
That orange pony with a pink mane in a braid looks like sunny from g5
Edit: nevermind, she already mentioned it xD
Thanks for an inciteful video!
The beach boys had "I can hear music" that could probably what you are thinking about
18:55
Well that was pretty pointless of Hasbro
Why promote Tales in the UK if it NEVER AIRED HERE!
If I were them
It'd probably either get BBC, ITV or Channel 4 to broadcast it
But then again
There were a handful of UK VHS and DVD releases of the show so the mane 7 did end up on Kids tv screens in the UK after all
Love the Earthbound music in the background.
24:18-24:21 God, that was weird.
12:01 Evneironmentalist
"blonde sweetheart" looks like surprise from g1
I love this show so so much lmao I actually kinda prefer this version of ponies and slice of life
30:39 u added this just so ppl would not steal this iceberg _didnt u_
Wait, it aired on the Disney Channel?
Huh.
Didn't know that.
It’s because at the time,Disney channel was a premium channel and not everyone got the channel.I grew up with not getting the channel because my parents couldn’t afford the premium channels at the time.I only had basic cable at the time (1992-1993)
