as someone who's had a g1 and g3 special interest since childhood its so refreshing to see a take on this movie that isnt just "grrr its not fim so its bad!!!!" this is a rly good video and i thoroughly enjoyed it !!! :D
also as a kid i didnt really think much differently than u on the movie; i grew up on a lot of my little pony n friends and my little pony tales so i was rly used to the wacky pony hijinx lol
I kinda wished the newer mlp had more magical fantasy themes, like I’m all for modernization but I loved how the old ponies lived simple lives but filled with magical items, giant flowers, fairies, witches, and other high fantasy themes! Though I’m excited to see the new coming generation!
Ironically, G5 was considered to have fantasy themes like G1 and either A. Was altered. Or B. Was scrapped. This was initially planned in leaks three years back.
If Rainbow of Light and Rainbow of Darkness are characters who are more sentient and can talk (similar to the talking Tree of Harmony) in the later generations, then I would watch them.
Me to but if you look at the trailer when they’re playing what looks like it’s similar to just dance, they don’t have a TV screen they used wooden wheels with different colored hooves on them, we know they have phones in the new movie but I think those are going to be the only devices with screens
The played this movie at our afterschool care, someone brought it on a cassette. English isn't the national language here and it was badly dubbed over in our language, you could still hear the original audio, just lowered, and the voice actors weren't..actual voice actors? Just some randos who spoke in monotone voice and the songs weren't even sung, just read out. Definitely not an official release of the movie in our country, it was probably made in someone's basement hgfdgf. Needless to say, 7 yo me fell in love and made my mom wait in the hall for me as I wanted to watch more of the movie after she came over to pick me up ( sorry mom ).
@@pattka3330 Digging this up but it's called lector and it's something that was common in ex-Soviet countries, but of course only we Poles have taken a liking to it with our Homo Sovieticus mindset. Poles literally refuse to watch anything not "dubbed" like that which drives me insane tbh. Sometimes also happens in modern Russia to cut costs
7:35 Fun Fact: The writer of this movie, George Arthur Bloom, moved on to become head writer of the PBS series "Cyberchase," whose villains are basically genderbent versions of the witches. It's a great time.
i was not actually alive when this movie came out BUT for some reason cartoon network of all things showed this one afternoon in the early 2000s, and let me tell you: i fell in love. i was already a bit into mlp when i was a kid (g3 kid here) but the old school art style really captured me, and made me really interested in g1 even as a kid. i was a horse kid, and watching a movie about little kids getting to go on an epic adventure with a bunch of cute small horses was something that spoke to me at that time. i will always remember it fondly.
@Neurodollversity oh, same here! i always liked the weird creepy aspects of g1, one morning i caught the first part of ghost of paradise estate on tv, and i was SO interested in this messed up plot about a shapeshifter tormenting the ponies and then burning down their entire house. crazy stuff.

My aunt borrowed the 30th anniversary edition from our local library when I was in grade school. It was weird, but fun. I even had a weird dream where everyone in my school read the script. I was Spike.
this was hands down my favourite movie as a kid. When i was a child we would rent movies from a local place every week, and every week i was allowed to pick one film of my choosing, when i say i literally rented this every single time i mean it, i have memories of my mother being like "really, this one again?" and me just always wanting to get it. Its obviously not a cinematic masterpiece but i just loved it for some reason
As a kid? Well, I thought the Smooze-scene was weird, but epic and scary at the same, and I felt like the ponies have to face a real threat. I loved the witches too. I really felt sorry for that two because of their mom. Like you said, it gets to the territory when she downright abuses them. I wanted them to get away from her. I liked the guy they went ask for help too for some reason. I wanted the little pony who ran away and Spike bond finding a common ground. I thought the furry ball like things (I know you said their name in English, but I am lazy right now) were fine, but I wished they'd have been more interesting. I liked Megan being the responsible one and I found the species whos leader voiced by Danny D. kind of interesting and symphatetic. The world was the one that made the biggest impression in me: It felt like it can take itself seriously and can goof around too.
Sad, But True Story: I used to watch both the My Little Pony movie and TV series with my sister when we were both little kids. Even sadder, when I was 8 years old, I kind of had a thing for the Megan character and even named one of my old cats after her.
Was literally just thinking like damn I have watched all of shunks videos wish she'd post more 😩honored to be early I am enjoying your channel so much 👍
I think it's funny that as a person that only grew up with G4 and G5, I always saw G1 as a dumb and childish, but now i see that G1 is basically lord of the rings with ponies 😆
I was recently brought back to the MLP G1 plot elements from the “History Repeats” audiodrama Scribbler & her team are doing, so this was a nice recap & analysis to watch! The Smoose terrified me as a kid 😂
Man, was this film a huge impact on my childhood. At the age of 6-7, I was always browsing through the massive library of VHS recordings of movies that my family had. It wasn't until I saw on VHS saying My Little Pony the movie that my curiosity was strangely piqued. Idk if I was too young or easy to impress, but I enjoyed the film to the point of repeat binging. Long story short, that movie was the conditioning that made me watch G4 and become the Brony I am today.
I thought the movie was the best thing ever as a kid, for a kid, seeing witches fighting against ponies with a giant slime monster at the end, later to be saved by the magical ponies out of no where, it was AMAZING Now cmon now, when we were kids we played like that a lot and we loved it
I watched this movie growing up because my mum found it in one of those bins with dvds no one wanted. At that time I’d only watch G3 so I enjoyed this movie way more especially with the Witch characters, creative world and especially the songs (I’ve still got the Smooze song stuck in my head now). I’m glad MLP today is more fantasy and fun and less G2 and 3
i definitely had this movie on a cd from a local supermarket magazine for kids, and all i could remember from it was the purple goop song and how weirdly appetizing the food the villain sisters ate... it did get me more into mlp and its toys, its a shame that movie hasnt stuck as well, cause seeing it now was a nice little blast of memories
I saw this at BronyCon 2017 and it pissed me off so hard because of Lickety Split. I wore out my voice screaming at how she undeservingly got handed the Rainbow power at the end. It’s been a hot minute since I saw it but man I hated it.

ive grown up with mlp since g1 up to g4 season 3 and damn i used to have nightmares about the slime monster but instead it was brown snails invading my whole house lol
oh god i remember watching this movie on my grandmothers old box television in the early 2000s and the smooze scared me so bad 😭 (its pretty much the only thing i can actually remember about it to be honest.......)
I had the 30th anniversary dvd as a kid, as well as a whole bunch of episodes from the show!! I loved this movie, probably move than I liked some Disney movies at the time.
I had this movie on vhs as a kid and I watched it so many times. The Smooze wasn’t nightmare level scary to me but man did it make me feel dread. Baby Lickety-Split’s songs were actually my favorite, at least they were the ones that I remembered as I got older, and went back to listen to them again.
oh my god.. i remember watching this very vaugly, but this reminded me of how i would CONSTANTLY rewatch G3 positively pink, pinkie pies 2 day birthday.
When I was younger, I much preferred Friendship is Magic, but I still LOVED this movie My mom grew up with it, and My Little Pony as a franchise is a way from us to connect even with the generational gap!
They probably won't show up in G5, but there is a G4/G1 crossover comic coming out soon that will feature new witches who I think are related to the ones from G1.
I loved this movie so much as a kid. I think it was the only MLP movie I had at the time, but I watched the heck out of it! I guess you could say it was also my first introduction to My Little Pony.
I literally used to be obsessed w/ this movie as a little kid (hell, I even showed this movie to one of my friends bc we were talking abt Danny Devito being in it) and the Smooze HORRIFIED me as a kid, like I watched the movie from under the end and stuff
I had this movie on tape as a kid and I was obsessed with it! I was afraid of the Smooze but I still watched the movie over and over and have vivid memories of Lickety Split and the witches.
i watched it when i was younger!! although i’m only 13 my parents liked showing me older stuff i guess, i remember liking it a lot!! the main thing that had an effect was being really scared by the smooze lol
I guess I technically did watch this as a kid because I was 11and found it on yt. But it was when I was in a phase where I agreed with the common brony consensus that the previous generations were "cringe". I rewatched this one though and had way more fun with it than before
I know we had a Megan Easter Egg in Equestria Girls and one of the Gen 1 Ponies is hailed a Hero and the Smooze returns, but I wish they used more of Gen 1 in Friendship is Magic.
I grew up with gen 4, but my grandma had a dvd of it. When I first watched it, I was a bit confused because it wasn't in the same style. But in the end, I really liked it! I think more people should be a bit more open and welcoming to previous generation stuff.
We bought the 30th anniversary DVD when it came out when I was younger, ironic though because my favorite song in the movie was I’ll Go it Alone and never realized until now how off key it is
I had this movie as a kid! This one together with that movie about the pig turning the land into mirrors. These movies might not have been anything special to adults and older kids, but I absolutely ADORED these movies! I played them on loop all the time!!! Baby lickety split was my favourite and the wishing well song was too. I honestly kind of miss the whimsical feel the original mlp franchise had. They're all just playing in grassy fields, living in pretty castles and organising festivals... And then this big magical problem rolls around and little me could never figure out how the ponies could POSSIBLY solve that! I honestly kind of miss feeling that type of clueless too. Either way, nice review!
I still remember getting the vhs tape as a reward for doing well on a spelling test back in 1st grade, still own it to this day. :) Years later when I got g1 on DVD, I saw the second g1 movie The End of Flutter Valley. If humans are ever brought back as antagonist, I hope the Witches would be brought back. Draggle was my favorite since she seemed to have potential for good and seemed to be the underdog of the family.
I was given my aunts' G1 pony collection when I was young and had a video cassette of this movie. I LOVED it. Watching it nowadays brings me a lot of nostalgia, but if I didn't have childhood ties to it I could see myself potentially not thinking much of it. My favourite pony in the movie was Fizzy, she was fun and bubbly (as her name implies). Favourite parts were when Lickety Split and Spike met Morning Glory, and during the Moochick's song when Megan, Fizzy and Wind Whistler were shown in different outfits based on the location the Moochick was pitching to them. I had a few of the ponies that were in the movie, so naturally I'd act out scenes with them or gather them up to watch it with me. I had an official tape of this, a recorded tape of Escape from Catrina, and recorded tapes of all the MLP Tales episodes. Tales though, I still love and will rewatch the whole series every now and again.
I watched this when I was little. I don't even know how because I was born almost like 20 years after it came out. I think the snooze gave me nightmares and I wanted to smack lickety split because her voice annoyed me but I loved the witch sisters and spike definitely. This brought back a lot of nostalgia for me thank you 💖
I didn't grow up with 1 I grew up with G3 as well as g3.5 and got into G4 when it first started airing on the Hub. But out of all the MLP movies from that time I have I always remember watching this, it didn't scare me much. But it was my gateway to other MLP movies and toys. I actually want to rewatch this now thanks to your video! Hopefully I can find my DVD of it!
i watched this movie as a kid and i LOVED it i always had it on repeat. the ”nothing can stop the schmooz” song still lives rent free in my brain 17 years later (im gen z but my mom was an 80’s kid so i had it on dvd). also shmooz using it/it’s pronouns is very cool good for it. and the grundles are all very cool. when watching it as a kid i never understood why the human kids were there and the magic rainbow and i was understandably surprised when you said they were from the mlp tv show that aired at the time(also big shock to me that it was animated in 6 weeks). out of all the characters though the 2 witch sisters were always my favorite and i loved how the writers played heavily that they loved things like garbage and eating bugs, bats, and even dirt. overall loved this movie as a kid and i still even have the original dvd!!
My dad got this movie for me when I was a kid and I would watch it literally all the time 😭 the only problem was that everytime nothing can stop the smooze would come on I'd run out of my room crying and make my dad fast foward it to when the song was over BDJDJDJS
i watched this movie loaads when i was younger, also "is that a yes or a no" is one of the lines the sisters say and my mom sister and i still say it to this day
I had this movie in Swedish. They cut alot of scenes away to make it shorter. So alot of scenes I didint understand fully, cause they just magically happened. Like I never saw how they made the smooze or that spider thingy. I also dont know how Lickety Split ended in the cave.. great logic there. :D I loved the movie, still do. Tough I want to see the whole movie without the cutting.
I remember when I was young I was so surprised when the smooze was made. I was almost positive that it was going to do that thing where the villian is like "We are going to make the smooze! We are about to do it! Just you wait! Any second n- Oh darn the ponies are here and stopped us," The fact that the smooze absolutely floods the land before the ponies are even starting to find a solution was very cool.
I made my dad get me this movie when I was younger but at the time I was only familiar with G3 and watching this movie gave me whiplash and I remember being really scared of the smooze and that is all I remember
Omg I was like "wow it's wild that I hadn't watched this one" and then you mentioned the lickity split storyline and I was like NO WAIT bc I totally have seen this and apparently just forgot like 80% of it
It is very funny to me that "I'll go it alone" is legitimately the only thing I remember clearly from this movie and I think I could probably take a stab at the whole thing, but I doubt it was exactly a standout moment
Holy crappp that purple goo monster has been in my mind for years, but I could never remember where it was from. It has been bugging me for so long, I'm glad I finally found the movie... tbh I have no idea when I even saw this movie as a kid cuz the movie had been out for 20 years before I was even born lmao
I saw this movie in the theater on first release and....I wasn’t impressed. But then I saw a lot of cartoon series turned major motion pictures that year and the only memorable ones were THE TRANSFORMERS (go ahead, try not crying when Prime dies) and the second Care Bears movie where they fight the Antichrist.
I’m honestly more shocked you don’t know of Madeline Kahn. She was huge in the theatre world. And I think beloved by many. I was shocked to hear she was in this movie. Also, she only passed away at 57 from ovarian cancer apparently. :( RIP
When I started watching My Little Pony in secret G4 at yet to exist. I watched a few random TH-cam videos, but when I actually started to watch My Little Pony it was the movie I got my start with. I already liked horses. I write and illustrate children’s books so I will still watch My Little Pony to get ideas. Yet I probably be able to watch G5 as I don’t have Netflix. I remember when it was a movie rental. I was able to find the G5 movie online.
I watched this movie as a kid, I enjoyed the movie although would get bored at parts, im nostalgic for it but the movie never stuck with me in a huge way
I was so scared of the smooze as a kid that I had an eoisode where I didn't wanna go outside alone because I thought that the smooze would come to swallow my home. I'm still scared of it in my early 20s
I owned it on VHS and i did like it, i never got the playsets but we did have the castle and some others at school where we would try play the movie with what we had
I used to have a tape with this and other movies recorded on it that I would watch with my sisters. I liked it well enough and still like it today. I felt bad for Rika and Draggle though. Anyone think if the movie were made today the ponies would have become their friends?
You know you’ve played Pokémon too much when you watch this movie and the first time you see the Smooze, you point at the screen and yell, “Hey look! Muk’s in the movie!”
I watched this movie a while ago and my favorite thing about it is how The Grundles, despite their appearances, are actually quite nice. It sends a good message about anyone potentially being kind, from the smallest pony to the tallest person. Additionally, I really like Dragle and Rita, but I always wished they found the strength to say “Yeah, Hiddea? More like Hideous, especially in personality. Byeeee!”

I see ocelous as flutters, given her shy personality
@@Portableholefromthefuture yeah but ocellus is incredibly book smart, and yona has a way with animals
@@sunbirth4795 book smart like twi?
Shady is more so pessimistic than flutters to a significant degree though, so posey is still the most alike as expected with fluttershy
I loved this movie so much as a kid. I think it was the only MLP movie I had at the time, but I watched the heck out of it! I guess you could say it was also my first introduction to My Little Pony.
Man this movie was a big part of my childhood because it was a big part of my moms childhood I still go back and watch it from time to time
I literally used to be obsessed w/ this movie as a little kid (hell, I even showed this movie to one of my friends bc we were talking abt Danny Devito being in it) and the Smooze HORRIFIED me as a kid, like I watched the movie from under the end and stuff
The smooze reminds me of the slime that Howl produces (that sounds kinda dirty) when he's upset about his hair changing colour
This movie is really close to my heart i used to watch pretty much everyday whenever i got home, it was on a CD with other mlp stuff. Good times.
I guess I technically did watch this as a kid because I was 11and found it on yt. But it was when I was in a phase where I agreed with the common brony consensus that the previous generations were "cringe". I rewatched this one though and had way more fun with it than before
I always preferred this movie over the 2017 one in my opinion
I know we had a Megan Easter Egg in Equestria Girls and one of the Gen 1 Ponies is hailed a Hero and the Smooze returns, but I wish they used more of Gen 1 in Friendship is Magic.
Aw, I loved this movie when I was a kid! I rented the tape so many times from Blockbuster at my grandparents' house!
The witch sisters are famous character actresses from film and TV. Bloody hell Shunks.
I watched this when I was little. I don't even know how because I was born almost like 20 years after it came out. I think the snooze gave me nightmares and I wanted to smack lickety split because her voice annoyed me but I loved the witch sisters and spike definitely. This brought back a lot of nostalgia for me thank you 💖
i would've never guessed shunks would make a video about MLP 🤨
I didn't grow up with 1 I grew up with G3 as well as g3.5 and got into G4 when it first started airing on the Hub. But out of all the MLP movies from that time I have I always remember watching this, it didn't scare me much. But it was my gateway to other MLP movies and toys. I actually want to rewatch this now thanks to your video! Hopefully I can find my DVD of it!
i love youtube for recommending your channel
Congratulations on 10k subscribers!
i watched this movie as a kid and i LOVED it i always had it on repeat. the ”nothing can stop the schmooz” song still lives rent free in my brain 17 years later (im gen z but my mom was an 80’s kid so i had it on dvd). also shmooz using it/it’s pronouns is very cool good for it. and the grundles are all very cool. when watching it as a kid i never understood why the human kids were there and the magic rainbow and i was understandably surprised when you said they were from the mlp tv show that aired at the time(also big shock to me that it was animated in 6 weeks). out of all the characters though the 2 witch sisters were always my favorite and i loved how the writers played heavily that they loved things like garbage and eating bugs, bats, and even dirt. overall loved this movie as a kid and i still even have the original dvd!!
I watched this movie as a kid and all I remember is I kept rewatching it
11:01 The SEA PONIES OMG- they were my favourite
My dad got this movie for me when I was a kid and I would watch it literally all the time 😭 the only problem was that everytime nothing can stop the smooze would come on I'd run out of my room crying and make my dad fast foward it to when the song was over BDJDJDJS
God that movie,, as a child I saw it constantly!! Like ive must have seen it over 20 times as a child since it was one of the only movies we had xD
i watched this movie loaads when i was younger, also "is that a yes or a no" is one of the lines the sisters say and my mom sister and i still say it to this day
"please we've been good kid"
DID YOU SERIOUSLY HAVE TO REMIND ME OF THAT IMAGE
I remember watching this on dvd, i liked it but i also found some parts scary as a kid lol.
I made my dad get me this movie when I was younger but at the time I was only familiar with G3 and watching this movie gave me whiplash and I remember being really scared of the smooze and that is all I remember
I saw this movie when it came out during an elementary field trip.
"Please we've been good, cmon kid" GOD DAMN IT NOT AGAIN
I watched this in the early 90s when I was 4 or 5 and I loved it. 80s kids films were so unusual, camp and cheesy but they are among my favourite.
Oh god the care bears movie- both of them are just fever dreams
Love the Tomodachi Life music
I watched this movie as a kid, I enjoyed the movie although would get bored at parts, im nostalgic for it but the movie never stuck with me in a huge way
The smooze making the ponies immobile or evil (unless given some sort of antidote) would be a better concept in my opinion, too!
I was so scared of the smooze as a kid that I had an eoisode where I didn't wanna go outside alone because I thought that the smooze would come to swallow my home. I'm still scared of it in my early 20s
i barely remember this film because i watched films at night a lot as a kid and i think i just fell asleep during the middle part
ahh this is so nostalgic wow
I had this movie on DVD as a kid and I loved it, wouldn't be opposed to watching it again something
Byeeee!”
Praise lord smooze!
Ah yes, friendship is witchcraft
I renember watching it when I was in the kindergarden. And I'm honestly glad that the gen 4 premiered when I went to 1st grade.
