I'm reminded of that scene from Spider-Man the Animated Series wherein a comicbook artist is explaining to his protege that "you can't draw the hero's hands larger than his head," and the kid - meant to represent McFarlane in conversation with Stan Lee from their discussion about the creation of Overkill - says, "That's how heroes are drawn these days. Times have changed." This grotesque figure (proportionally because otherwise he's fantastic) is McFarlane having the last laugh.
I think the crotch parts are interchangable so why they didn't just change it for the Action Comics 1000 version to have a more classic look I don't know. They seemed to have the idea that because they were using the Page Punchers body they had to use the WHOLE body. They couldn't swap out the crotch parts or the forearms for a more classic look. It's a shame because they're SO close here. The 'S' design, the headsculpt, the shades of blue, yellow and red. They were really, really close to delivering the perfect silver/bronze age Superman and whiffed it by cheaping out on parts.
I've been waiting for this line. Basic normal figures. I can't believe we had to go through Batman as a Monster Truck and Spartan Superman to get to this but, finally. I hope we get the rest of them.
I thought Superman: Action Comics #1000 was pretty good. The thing about getting a decent Superman face is don't give him an unnecessarily serious and/or overly detailed face, but neither give him a permanent grin all the time like this one.
@@blue1133 I think that’s a good rule of thumb for Supermans (Supermen?) who only come with a single head, but I’d always rather see a Superman come out with a smiling head, and a nondescript grimace like you said. Give people options.
My preferred Superman colors are the light red and blue, with black and white suit, no cape, long hair Superman being a close second. A lot of people don't seem to like smiley headsculpts on superheroes, but quite like it. Not as the only head included, but as an extra.
I prefer a bright blue with a medium red for Superman, for me he’s supposed represent hope and bright colors do that. He should also have at least one smiling face/head sculpt, let Batman be the angry and stern one.
I hoped that they would've fixed the big hand issue. I'm tempted to buy this and other Superman figures from this line to make an amalgam. I really like the leg sculpt on this one.
I didn't get this one. Love the colors, but that's about it. I still think Action Comics 1000 Superman is McFarlane's best to date. Thanks for this great video... Bat Toast
I fancy the colours on this Superman figure; the bright blue really pops and it is complemented nicely by the warm red and enthusiastic yellow. Dorky smile aside, it is your classic Superman. But bloody hell-those giant, oversized hands do not belong on that body! And his nappy is huge, too! So close, McFarlane… so close. As usual, McFarlane Toys missed the mark. Grazie, Anthony! I enjoyed the review! 👍 Giovanni Marino, M.D.🇬🇧🇮🇹
I want a Superman in my collection, but this one requires too much work to get it right. Gonna pass and wait for a better one to appear/look for one that has been released by another company.
No buns of steel? Cake-less? This is a new low. It is difficult for some to understand what is going on with the manufacturer's management of the comic based action figures. On one hand they produce a product like Nightwing that isn't worth its packaging. On the other hand the same company produces a figure which has disproportionate body parts. This is not a good time to be a collector of comic based action figures.
I like both, but it's more about the adaptation for me. For instance this color combo I always think of Christopher Reeve Superman or just that classic silver age look, but for the darker blue and red, Fleischer Superman is my favorite. I'm on the hunt for this one but I'm replacing the cape with a wired one, he'll be my classic Supes to go with Knightfall Batman. EDIT: A lot of the classic Supermans had those wrist cuffs, another reviewer looked at the Collectors Edition debut Superman and had the same comment, but Superman #1 did have them (But comic art of the time was usually inconsistent)
Called a classic superman, yet he has the wrong belt, the wrong boots, some bs on the wrists. And on top of all that a dumb head sculpt. And no S on the cape.
I think this figure looks pretty nice, I especially like the updated/modern sculpt and classic colors. Proportions are iffy, tho, and I'm not a fan of the cape. Wish this one came with an alternate head that's neutral. About the colors, I really like the Rebirth Supes in a 2 pack with Ultraman, but I like this one, too. There will be a new upcoming McFarlane Superman figure that's better than this, unfortunately.
I think its good for people who couldnt afford the mafex reissue from october and like mcfarlane and yes todd is obviously gonna do some platinum, gold label release with the accurate belt from the classic comics , and proportionate hands
The real problem is - as usual - it's off model. Wrong belt, no belt loops, wrong boot tops, wrong cuffs, no yellow S symbol on cape, wrong shade of blue. And they go and stick an image that, while fairly recent, at least looks classic. I am yet yo buy a single McFarlane figure. Owned basically every DCU Classics and hundreds of DC lines over the last 30 years if that twlls you anything.
I think light blue and red look great together, but for me, Superman is supposed to be dark blue. Those hands sure do look insane lol. You are the best ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙
Is the reason for the larger lower body due to them entering wrong size values when they produced the mold? Like the upper body is at 100 and the lower body is 105 or something?
I prefer a slightly darker blue for Superman. His headsculpt is better than most mcfarlane Superman headsculpts. The upperbody seems too slender, legs too thick, oversized hands. I agree with you there.
This is the best Superman figure McFarlane has put out, which isn't saying much. Not to say the figure is bad because it's decent, but Todd, for some reason, can't get Superman right.
My main ideas of Superman are the DCAU abd Max Fleischer versions of Superman, which both have a relatively dark blue with a bright red. Thr cyan blue doesnt work for me. The contrast between the dark blue and vright red and yellow really makes him pop.
I like a medium blue, not too bright and not too dark, with bright reds and yellows. I really wish that Hasbro had the license for DC. I know they don't want to share a toy company for standard releases, but they have so many body molds that could be retooled into a DC character. Look at their recent Power Princess, it's a better Wonder Woman figure than McFarlane toys or Mattel ever made.
Still glad I passed on this. He's just too small, and the overall proportions are goofy exactly as you pointed out. I have no idea why they wont make a beefy, tall Superman in scale with the Three Jokers Batman or Hush Batman.
It cannot be that hard for them to make the hinges at the limbs somewhat okay looking. If a line like DC Icons (which was actually kind of bad in hindsight) was able to do it then they can do it.
@@AnthonysCustoms You meant the hands but it didn't come off like that in the video. Might just be me, but i think you could've quote that better. Still, pretty informative review. Didn't notice the big lower body before.
I´m sorry but in the video you mentioned that it was enough for Superman to come with a couple of intercheangable hands as that´s fine for the character and that flight stands are better than nothing yet you gave the figure 0 in that regard because of not having better accesories.
Having an acceptable assortment of hands does not mean it's an acceptable assortment of accessories. He came with no alternate head despite the stupid smile. The flight stands are bad. The card doesn't match the figure.
For a classic Superman, the lines on the top of the boots are correct. Look at any cover from 1968-1990 or so. The belt is so wrong it hurts. There shouldn't be the angling down that it has, it should be straight across and threaded through red loops on the belt, and most importantly with a circle or oval belt buckle. It is SO glaringly wrong that I didn't notice the tiny top half until you talked about it. This is clearly an alternate universe Superman and not at all "classic."
Looks pretty great to me (aside from the belt and no yellow "S" on on the back). Gonna display it with classic Wonder Woman and Year Two Batman. Question: How do you get that lazy Susan to spin by itself!?
I agree 100% on the top half not matching the bottom half. But thay stupid smile. He looks like someone who hears a joke but doesn't really get it but smiles to pretends that he does get the joke.
I'm usually a dark blue guy when given the option, but for Superman I do like the light blue look. Maybe it's just nostalgia. I don't care for this figure though. A classic Superman in his light blue attire should be big, but not cut. And those giant hams at the end of this guy's arms look absurd and the lower half is clearly too big. It's like a kit-bash released as an official product. Also, I think I hate the cape. Aside from that...
Just like the previous Hush Superman, it’s close. I love the sculpted body. There’s more muscle definition in the arms and legs. I like the sculpted logo on the chest, and the figure seems better proportioned. I’m not really a big fan of the head. The giant hands are weird, they have the wrong belt for classic Superman, and the articulation kind of blows. I didn’t know the legs had limited range going forward 🙁 Also, they need to get rid of those cuffs. It’s on every Superman figure, he doesn’t have them aside from a few of versions like New 52 and some modern looks, not classic.
