I feel like the thing with Mario might be a language barrier issue. I'm bilingual and I speak both languages just fine. But in a moment of panic I sometimes lose one because my brain is suddenly thinking in a different language. There are so many studies on this! I’ve done multiple research projects on it. People also forget that cultural noms are so different everywhere else. Even the cultural norms between USA and UK. Thank you for mentioning. Most do say physical directions in other languages are very difficult and frustrating. I speak four languages and cannot give physical directions in any of them. 😂

That's why there was a scandal that almost ended the show about Hoppo getting the endorsement directly from Red bull and allegedly from Mars without letting the show know. I hope show does sponsor some of their equipment at least.
As a Dutch person myself, I laughed really hard when I saw all these people with Unox heads. But I have to say, i was really proud when I saw that everyone was being responsible and just having fun without causing any problems!
I personally don’t like mario because he’s really not very good at his job you have to work in a team in a situation like that he’s obviously not a team player

Yep. First thing we learned when going to the beach: NEVER go deeper than your hips and NEVER something to float on in the sea. Floaties are for pools.
Everyone’s mad at Mario but imagine how much pressure it is, watching hundreds of people to keep them away from all danger: rip currents, rocks, big waves, surfers, and just generally other people. They were both probably extremely stressed.
Mario is in the wrong, however I see his perspective. He struggles with English and didn't understand the error. He did say he was on the north side, but doesn't understand the value saying what number stair he's at.

This is a late reply but I just think Mario needs more training. Yes, he was stressed. But that doesn't mean every other life guard isn't when a rescue is happening. He just needs to be trained in getting his thoughts together, to prevent any further errors.
Mario is my least favourite lifeguard. My favourite is Harrison.... No reason why..... .......it is TOTALLY not like I used to have a crush on him or anything😳
I just want to say that as a person that has been landlocked for 99% of my life and limited to Minnesota lakes, the outer banks, and long beach CA. I enjoy this show a great deal and have a lot of vicarious fun watching it. I've always regretted not visiting Australia. These blokes and young women are a fine reflection on their country.

Funny thing is most Dutch are pretty good swimmers. Every middle schooler gets at least 1 year of weekly swimming lessons and loads of parents (at least mine) give their kids up for swimming lessons when they’re like 4 years old. It’s because way back in 1953 the North Sea made the dam break and half of the Netherlands got flooded. Since then every parent ever immediately taught all their kids how to swim
Smart move of your country to be prepared for an emergency like that. Learning a life skill, you can't go wrong. I grew up on a lake and I took swim lessons and went through the training to be a lifeguard. Even my public elementary school, we had lessons first thing in the morning, class after class would walk up to the high school pool for lessons during school hours. I remember how cold it was some mornings. Lol we would just be shivering, wrapped up in our towels on the way back to our school. Lol I am very grateful that my parents made sure I could have this life skill.
That and we are just surrounded by water in general. Motes, rivers, canals, and lakes everywhere. The chance of exidentally getting yourselves in water somewhere in your life are really high, so learning to swim is seen as about as important as learning to read or count. I My first swim whas when I whas two, wanted to fill my bucket and the weight draged me in. Luckely my 4 year old sister whas right there and got me out at once. Before my parents even got the chance ❤
Also I wonder if they would ever consider hiring an Asian, whether Chinese, Korean or whatever, I think it would be helpful since bondi is such a international spot the Australians are more experienced with the waves. Wouldn’t it be a smart move too I hope some Asians try to be a trainee tho

I live in Canada's Rocky Mountains in the frozen North, they cut a hole in the ice and jump in, which honors their custom (and they provide their own paramedics in case). This is just a group of wanna-be's putting everyone else at risk!

And in the end the community is more important than the details of the act. So with no cold natural alternative, and knowing almost all of us are good swimmers that know to take the wraith of sea and oceans seriously before we get to highschool, I think this is completely fair to do! Saying it's not the actual tradition becouse the water is not cold enough feels a bit like saying you cant celebrate Christmas becouse you couldn't find a pine tree. Sure is a watered down version of the original thing, but you've got to work with what you have
