Woodturning | Project That Sells - Money Saving, Eco Friendly Seed Pot Mold

- In this project I make a form and press to make paper seedling started cups from news paper. This project wins on many levels. It is very easy to make the mold and the pots, uses scrap wood and news paper which everyone has, is environmentally friendly and saves money! I made the first one of these 25 years ago as a prototype for an entrepreneur and I think given the cost of everything including vegetables it is a good time to bring it back. I hope you enjoy the video, thank you to all who watch! Please leave a comment and a thumbs up or down!
Tom Here; what a spectacular idea!! Always so enjoyable to watch and learn from you!!

Thanks Huw! Good luck!
What a cool idea. Smart and fun.
Thank you Michael!
Really good video thanks - as food prices start to hike people need to become more self sufficient - not only will I make a couple of different sizes of these for myself I'll make some to sell too - I imagine garden centres would be interested in using and selling these!
Thanks Paully, I made 512 this spring. Took a few hours but i made the pots and my boy filled them so we had a good time at it. Thanks for watching!

Thanks Lewis. My daughter and son-in-law are buying a piece of property in the caribou region of BC, and I know they want to grow their veggies. This will definitely be a project I’ll do for them.

Excellent Rick! Thanks for watching!
I really enjoy these videos, Lewis. It's great to have these useful little projects when you have a bit more time before calling it a day and I have at least three people in mind for these as a gift.

Nice little project Lewis, perfectly timed as well as it is time to make things for gardeners.
Thanks Pete! I suspect you can make more than 5 sets in an hour. I appreciate you watching buddy!
Cool!!
Thank you Ralph!
Thank you for showing us how to make these! I have some scrap wood, and a long list of potentially easy projects. This looks short and sweet, in terms of making time. Thanks!

Thank you Barry, I appreciate it!
Great idea! Thanks for sharing. 👍😊
Thanks! I appreciate you watching!
Good timing on this project . I recommend getting a machinists vice to put on your drill press
I have a drill press vice but I do so many irregular things it seldom gets used. If I were making a bunch I would use it though. Thanks for watching!
That was pretty cool👍😎
Thank Luie! I appreciate you watching buddy!
I really appreciate these type of video's Lewis. They give me great turning ideas plus you always give us an idea of what to charge for the item. Pricing is always a problem for me and I tend to sell my turnings to cheap. Story of my life..... sigh..
Thanks Dennis! I’m glad it some help. I appreciate you watching buddy!
You could put more than 1 circular channel in the base to accommodate different size molds.
You could but it is good to have that center in there to crimp. I appreciate you watching.
I like this idea, thank you for sharing. Have you used these before? I am curious how well the paper holds up to the damp environment? Cheers,
Thanks Chris! I have used them. The hold up decently. Of course you can roll more or less layers so it is dependent on that. One thing I find when watering to put the water in the tray and not on top works best.
Thanks for the video. I plan to make one for me and a couple to see how they sell.
Am I correct in assuming that the newspaper decays away?
Hey Jesse! Yes the paper just decays and the roots pass through. Thank you for watching!
I love this and so will my wife. I accidentally hit the 👎button then immediately hit the 👍 like I intended. Sorry, hope this doesn’t screw up anything.
No worries, that doesn’t hurt a thing! I appreciate it!
Interesting. Not seen or heard of anything like this/these before (t’other side of ye olde ponde). Do instructions exist on how to use it/them?
Thank You 🙏
Hi Michael, once you have made the paper planter just use it the same way you would one made of Pete moss. They should be placed in trays and watered from the bottom. I will be showing my planting rack in an upcoming video where I am using 512 of these. Keep an eye open!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman champion thank you.
these are great gifts for the gardeners! are you selling them too?
Thanks Kathryn! I used to but I don’t do production turning now, I just show the stuff I have made that sell well to help new people. Thanks for watching!
@@TheKlondikeCraftsman that's fine thanks for letting me know
What was the size of the drill bit? Thanks
Hey John, the bit was 2-1/8” thanks for watching!
Great video Lewis, very inspiring.
I would love it if you could mention what chisel you are using at each stage. I’m an absolute newbie and it would be great to learn what each chisel is best for. 👍
Thank you! I’ll try to remember to do that!
Hi, what are the dimensions of the blocks before you turn them? Really enjoy your videos and as a beginner they are very helpful
Thanks William! That one was 2-3/4 square by 5” long but you can go any size that works for you really. Thanks for watching!
