    Most informative video. I noticed that you used three angles to cut the rings. I would have thought all cutting angles would be the same. The contrasting woods are very nice. Thanks two bunches.

      Thank you and thanks for watching.
      The way a bowl from a board works you end up with thin walls. So by changing the angle it gives you enough stock to get a curved side on it.
      Thanks again,
      Gary

    Note to everyone... watch the explanation at the end. One of the better demonstrations and explanations of "board bowls" angles there is. Well done sir.👍

      I debated with showing it early on or waiting. Hard to fit in the beginning without breaking up the flow.
      Very happy you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.

    Hello my friend.
    I also appreciate this idea. I also made a ring removal knife this week. It was a DIY project. And I will try today. You are a good master. Thank you for showing the details. I wish you have a nice weekend. All the best. Ll see.

    Well, you just keep impressing us with your math and design skills, Gary! I love your new ring cutter. I'll bet you have people wanting to buy one from you! LOL! I know, I know, you already had a job and you're not interested in having another one! This video is so well done, Professor! You are leaving a legacy for generations to come and I'm proud of you!

      Thank you very much Phil and yes I am getting a lot of questions on if the are available for purchase. So many variables on banjo shapes and sizes it might turn into a real nightmare and make me thinking I have a job again. I have not had that bad dream for a few years now LOL
      This was lots of fun to do and so for seems to be well liked. My video last week was a bit of a flop LOL.
      Thanks for watching my friend,

    You have inspired me to a new level. I make bowls from saved pieces of past projects and resin and always want to reduce waste. This cutting off a flat stock is so smart . Thank you for sharing such an amazing way to create bowls.

    As soon as I saw the thumbnail for this video a game show bell went off in my head...ding ding ding. I knew how well it would work to cut any angle accurately. I had to chuckle when I saw the popsicle used to set the angle. You think like me at times. At least on the simple things. What flavor was the popsicle? LOL.
    There might be a market for this jig idea. ????
    Well done, but be careful, you keep setting the bar higher with each video Gary.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Gil, yes I think this jig is much better than the other. But the other works good as well.
      I save those popsicle sticks for mixing 5 minute epoxy or CA and sawdust. They are actually from juice bars we like. Also some Häagen-Dazs ice cream bars as well.

    Both: the level of the craftsmanship and idea behind of this invention are incredible and quite in your style, Sir! Adapting your idea to the possibilities of those who are without CNC machines is pricelless as well. Following you, I will try to execute it in aluminum (hoping without cutting my own digits with the bandsaw!)
    Thank you very much, Gary!

    I always thought when turning bowls you waste a lot of material, you have shone away that saves that material and opens up endless possibility. Nice jig !! simple and very practical. I do tend to think that people over complicate things. Thanks Gary

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much. For sure they does save a lot of nice wood that you have to purchase. I sure would not buy a huge kiln dried blank to turn a bowl. That is a shame for the real fancy stuff.
      I do not feel real bad if I turn something that was headed for the fire place though. Which it seems most of pieces of trees end up there.
      Thanks for watching,

    Hi Gary. Quick update. The tool steel did finally arrive a few months back but I had a series of retaining walls to replace beside the house and spent six months with contractors intermittently (!) working the project. Every contractor and sub was to their ears with work so it was very difficult to keep people on the job as they had way to much to cope with and too few workers to boot. So here I am in December finally watching this video again. Now I'm off to find the other video that showed how you used a tool post and flat attachment to build a multi angle fixture as I do not have the equipment to easily manufacture the one shown in this video. But first off to the dentist. Thanks again for all you share, you have taught me a great deal. Best of the Season to you and yours. Cheers, Gord

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Gord and hope those contractors get it all done for you.
      I understand limited time to get things done for sure.
      The first fixture I made will work just fine. I just like making fixtures so did the others.
      Best of luck and Merry Christmas.

    You sir are a very smart man. I am almost 67 years old. My Daddy was a Commercial Fisherman and a Boat Builder, so as a little bitty kid I was following around behind him with a hammer and a saw. So I have been a woodworker pretty much all my life but I have never owned or used a lathe. You and Mr. Phil Anderson have taught me more about becoming a woodturner than all the others put together. I do not know when or even if I will ever be able to afford a lathe, and I know if I do, it will have to be an old used one. See, I am a disabled Veteran in a wheelchair and disability don't pay well. Anyway, I just wanted to comment after watching the end of this on how you got the curve as well as your new tool. I am subscribed to you but I have no idea how to see any reply you make, but that's OK, you just keep posting videos and I will keep learning..........JP

      Thank you very much Paul for your very kind words. I worked as a wood pattern maker minus 2 years in the Army and another 2 trying to get my head back on straight.
      I have loved wood working since I was in grade school and not just wood turning.
      I am sorry to hear about you situation and hope you are able to get a small lathe. i know 2 people that are in a wheel chair and are able to turn.
      I got through the Army mostly ok but I do carry a few disabilities' myself. Nothing like you though.
      If you were able to comment you should be notified of my response to your comment.
      All my best to you my brother,
      Gary

    Hi Gary. The end of this video does help us ‘not so smart turners’ understand how to lay out the concentric circles and make curved bowls with various angles. I appreciate you referring me back to this video! Another question: do you think a 3-D printed version of your aluminum angle jig would hold up to the heat generated by the thin parting tool cutting at an angle through the board? A very talented friend is going to make a version on a 3-D printer. I’m wondering if the material will hold up. Well, thanks again! Steve (Big Galoot Woodworks)

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you Steve. I would think that depending on how dense it was made that it should hold up. Testing would be important. I would not worry about the one I made but I know my parting tool and how hot it gets.
      I like to back out now and then to clear the chips and on mine it is the tip that gets real hot. Back where it is against the jig is not nearly as hot.
      As with any thing test it out real good before using it.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

      My scraper is a negative rake scraper. That means it has an angle grind on both sides. With only one grind then you are doing it the way it is meant to be used. This scraper started out with an angle on one side and I ground the other. Very good finish and no catches.

    Hi Gary. I made my first bowl of a board and learned a lot. Of course I also had tear-out. (My parting tool has a diamond shape, so that's not ideal). Also when gluing I had made a mistake by not correctly putting the rings back on the woodgrain.🤭
    Learned a lot from this video too. I'm going to make a second attempt soon.🤗
    You made a verry clever jig. I won't go that far, but it's nice to see how you do this.
    Take care!
    Frank.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Frank! My parting tool is a diamond shape as well, Just make sure it is very sharp and listen to the sound the wood makes. When you get within a 1/16 of an inch you can hear the sound change. Very light pressure and you should not get tear out. There might be fuzees on the edge but no tear out.
      It is nice to line the grain up but it does not look bad if you have them rotated enough to make it look like you did it n purpose. But I do prefer to line it up most of the time.
      Before you cut your rings put a mark across the board on top and bottom. You can use that to line things up.
      Take care,
      Gary
