I've had the 26" x 4" Terrene Standard Cake Eaters installed since early November. The 1,100 miles have been excellent on them! Very versatile (I like that they can be studded, but our StL winter was mild) and surprisingly fast. Happy testing!
Thanks for the feedback! My sense is they should be a great all rounder, my initial snow rides have been impressive too.
Will that 27.7 x 4.5 studded Cake Eater squeeze onto the back of a Beargrease without rubbing?
I believe Salsa says that 27.5x4” is the largest recommended size in the rear. It’s one of the few things about the Beargrease that I think they missed on, not being able to run the biggest tires possible.
Nice overview! Can’t wait for more feedback once you ride them all. They look good and and offer a great range!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Yep will be a fun and interesting project for sure!
Super excited to hear about these. I am curious to see what they have to replace my Edna’s on Wednesday. I know I can do 4.6 but would prefer to stay with 4”-4.3”
For the Wednesday, I would do Cake Eaters to replace the Ednas, do a 4" on the rear (which will prevent any chain rub), and do a 4.6 up front, which would easily fit. Get the light 120tpi versions to to save weight, it'll wake up that bike!
Why are all fat bike tires rounded?
They all look like balloons that are ready to pop.
The review was interesting! You're going to busy testing all these doughnuts, I'm looking forward to more information on these tires.
Thanks for watching! yes, I am going to be busy for sure, not like I needed an excuse to go ride fat bikes though!
I ordered my 26x4” Cake Eaters tonight I cant wait to get them and my XX1 Eagle chain on my Surly Wednesday thanks for the video.
You’ll love them I think!
Great info . I did not realize that one could purchase a tire specifically to accommodate riding on ice 😊. Thanks for the video so helpful !! Looking forward to future post!!
Thanks for watching!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend You are welvome
Very informative didn't know they made studded tires for ice riding something to look into keep them coming can't wait to see how they all perform
Thanks for checking it out!
I have studded Cake Eaters - I think they are fabulous on icy packed snow trails and they are so light weight!
Yeah, they give tank tread traction at a surprisingly light weight!
Thanks for the review. I've been running 45nrth for the last few years, but always great to have other options. Would love to give the Wazia 4.6 a try.
Thanks for stopping by! If you try the Wazia lemme know what you find!
Shall be watching closely how this project progresses and your thoughts . Many thanks.
Thank you!
Hi! Could you please tell what is Terrene 27.5 x 4.3 Yipee Ki Yay outer diameter as well as width mesured beetween knobs.
The overall height of the tire mounted is about 30.25", the width on the outer edges of the side lugs is 4.075". Hope this helps! I have a short video coming soon with the three 27.5" Terrene tires, 4", 4.3", 4.5".
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Thanks! It seems it might fit my 26" frame 🚲
I have been looking at the yippee kia yay 27.5 x 4.3 for my Salsa Beargrease. I would be interested to know if the 4.3 would fit on the bike. I am looking to get a little more float during the winter without buying another rim set.
It should easily fit that bike (assuming one of the bikes that came stock with 27.5). I rode the Yippe Ki Yay today (high mtn snow) and came away really impressed.
You got a season of testing right there! 👍 be good to see the 4.8/5” 26” tyres compared to the Addix Schwalbe Jumbo Jim 26 x 4.8, to date I have found the 4.8” JJ mentioned for beach riding and Surly 4” Nate’s (120tpi) for winter trails inland on mud the best options here in the U.K. while 29+ for faster trails/Bikepacking we did ride Maxxis Chronicle 29x3” 120 tpi but now unavailable I have ready 2 pairs of Vittoria Bomballino tyres bought discounted to go on next, 😁👍
Not many options now available here in U.K. for Fatbikes with multiple wheel set sizes for different tyre option set ups these days 😢
Cheers Bruce
Yes, sounds like Maxxis is exiting the fat tire game too. Jumbo Jim’s have still eluded me, but I could see them being a good beach option. I could see the Nate’s being good mud/trail too, but so much of my riding is dry here that they just roll really rough. I am stoked to try these Johnny 5’s for sure, though in my initial rides these 27.5” tires are really impressing me!
I’m very interested in the Johnny 5s. I would like to see them compared to other similar high flotation 26” models.
Same here, coming off the 4.8’s I had on my ICT these Johnny5’s will be a good comparison.
Hi! Have you tried the 27.5 x 2.8 Terrene McFly? I was curious if you had some review or experience with that tire compared to others. Love the channel. Cheers!
That is one I have not had a chance to try yet. They didn’t have them in stock when I was doing the other tires. Thanks for watching!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend I just got some from eBay in 27.5x2.8 tough/grip. I’m about to try them on surly Wednesday. A lil beefy at 1150g but I am hoping they’ll prove to be a great all rounder for the trails and whatever urban bombing and paths I ride
Very helpful info ! Thanks so much !!
Thanks for watching, as always!!
I am setting up a bike for desert riding. River beds with sand and rock. Recommendations for tire and rim sizes. 27.5 x 4.3? 65 mm or 80 mm size rim?
I haven’t done much desert sand, but I have had my Flume in some river rock/bed conditions and the 27.5x4 Cake Eater worked well, I am also a huge fan of the 4.3” Yippee Ki Yays. It will be going on for the snow here in Colorado, but I rode them hard this summer too. I have 80mm wide wheels, I think 65mm would be just fine too.
This is awesome man. Looking forward to your thoughts! I have studdable 26x4.6 cake eaters and I do like them for all the things! But I do feel it is a “master of none” deal with them too. Curious to hear how they go for you.
That and how the Johnny 5s are! I’d be tempted to go to those for maximum snow performance.
Thanks for the feedback on the Cake Eater. It’s pretty much impossible to make a tire that excels in the most severe snow and runs fast on hard pack dirt, but I do think the Cake Eater seems like it will do everything quite well. I had the 26x4.6 out in the snow and they were great, yet to try ‘em in the dirt. Based on the volume and tread I think the Johnny 5’s will be like snowcat treads in snow. Thanks for watching!
I have the Cake eaters as well and like them.. This season I swapped the front cake eater for a Johnny 5 and wow what a difference.. They make a good combo.. u still get some nice speed from a faster back tire and get the float and burly traction up front.. I'd be interested to try the Wazia in the back one day as well
@@ryanlawrence8479 That is an interesting combo! Kinda like the Assegai/Dissector combo for trail bikes 😁. Might have to do that…
@@ryanlawrence8479 cool idea indeed, might need to experiment with that
Could you please tell what is outer diameter of yippee ki yay? Thanks
I currently don’t have them mounted up but will be putting them on again soon and will try to get a measurement.
Never heard of this company thanks
Definitely check them out!
Question? Maybe some one could help. How wide of a tire can you get on the rear of a gen1 pugsley?
I have a 26x4.3 on my 2014 Pugsleys (gen 2 I believe?). I’m not sure if the 2014 differs from the original on tire clearance though. If you have Facebook, join The Amazing Surly Pugsley group, there are some gen 1 owners there who might know the answer for sure.
Hi! Love the content. I have an Eunorau FatHD 1000w e-bike with stock 26x4.0 tires. Is there an aggressive Off Road tire made for this size? I’m a bow hunter and got the bike to go deep into the woods on trails. I have a cart to attach to haul my gear and or deer with. I’m looking for a tire that would dig into the terrain and not slip when going up hills pulling extra weight on the cart. Any suggestions?
If you have enough clearance to fit it, a 26x4.2” 45nrth Van Helga would be a good choice. Very tough high traction tire. A little larger size also will improve traction. If 4” is the absolute limit, a 26x4 Surly Nate will also be very tough and great traction. Neither of these tires roll particularly fast, but it sounds like for your application with an e-bike you don’t really care about that. I think a Terrene Cake Eater would probably perform well too (in my snow experience with then they are really good in tough traction situations), but the other two mentioned probably are still better overall on traction.
What’s the difference in diameter between the 27.5 x 4 Cake eater and the 27.5 x4.5 Cake Eater?
Here is a short video showing them together
th-cam.com/users/shortsxwkOlbYcSiU?feature=share
Thanks for the fast reply, but I was wondering what the difference is in height. For example , how much taller is the 27.5 x 4.5 than the 27.5 x4 ?
Is it an inch taller? A half inch taller etc. I’m trying to determine how changing from the 4.5 to the 4 will affect my bottom bracket height. Thank you @@ElevationEveryWeekend
@@davidmcmahon6186 Gotcha. Yeah unfortunately I don’t have the 4.5’s mounted up to get a good measurement on, but by looking at this video, it looks like it’s about 3/4” taller than the 4”…maaaaybe a little more? TBH, having ridden all three of these sizes I can’t say I noticed anything with the changed BB height.
Thank you!!@@ElevationEveryWeekend
My rim is 80mm wide. Is it possible to use 26 x 3.0 wide tires? Or do I need at least 26 x 3.5 wide tires? Thank you!
I probably wouldn’t recommend a 3” tire on the wide of a rim. But a 3.8/4” would be just fine.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Thank you!
Plz said me how to find 26×5 inches Tyre.which brand and model this size😢😢
There are a few out there, but I highly recommend the Terrene Johnny 5 based on my own experience.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend how to order Johnny 5 from Bangladesh 🇧🇩 can you tell plz 🙏🙏🙏❤️🙏
And how much this Tyre??????
@@paknapola here is the website, not sure if it is available in your area though?
www.terrenetires.com/collections/johnny-5
@@ElevationEveryWeekend which is best light or light studded???
And what is the difference between???
Which 27x4 tire is best for pavement?
I think that the Terrene Cake Eater is a good solution based on my personal experience on occassional pavement, and is still a good tire in the dirt and snow. There may be some slick options out there that might be good for pavement only, but I can't recommend any of those personally since I do not use them.
Could you tell me what the actual width is on the Johnny 5 is
Measured on an 80mm wide wheel, from outermost side lug to side lug with my dial calipers, it’s 4.550”.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend thanks have 4.6 wazia tough was considering Johnny 5 forgot to ask but what is the overall diameter
@@RossGatto-kh7bg total height from the ground is about 30.250”. The only fat tire combo I have that is taller is 27.5x4.5”
@@ElevationEveryWeekend thanks so much thanks to your measurements I’ll be able to put them on my bike a mongoose Argus trail which I’ve converted to a one by drivetrain the width of the wazia is also slightly smaller than listed at about 4.3 or so trying to use tape measure the height is 29.5 so I’ll buy a pair of pair of johnny5 for the increased width and height and they will fit it’s hard to get measurements for thanks so much for your help subscribed measurements on 80 mil sun tingle mulefut
@@RossGatto-kh7bg you are welcome!
Can i changed the rims of my trek farley 9.6 to a rims that would fit a narrower tire like maybe a 3.0? The stock rims are SunRingle Mulefut 80 SL
Absolutely! Having a 29x3" wheel set made for your fat bike is one of the best and most popular upgrades people do to use their fat bikes in non-snow conditions. I love 29+ (as it's called). You just need to make sure the wheels you are buying or having built are compatible with your frame spacing and drivetrain.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend so it needs a custom built wheelset 😅
@@marztenacity9444 custom built, or you can find some off the shelf wheels that may work too. I know ICAN sells options that would likely work. If you were asking if you could just swap out the rims on your existing wheels? I would not recommend that.
Do you prefer 26" or 27.5"?
If I had to pick one I would go 27.5, but 26” works totally fine as well.
Will a 4.0 tire fit on a 100mm rim?
It will, but it’s probably not ideal. I have a Mongoose Dolomite and the rims are about 100mm wide and I put Surly Nate 26x4 tires on it. It is functional but you can see the profile of the tire isn’t ideal.
Is the Johnny 5 26x5.0 suitable for inner tubes besides for tubeless?
Yes, you absolutely can run tubes in these!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend thanks
@@ElevationEveryWeekend Last question.
Is it possible to fit Tannus armor 26x4.8 in that tire? Tannus doesn't have 26x5.0 inserts.
@@vsarsonas That might be a question better for them. I suspect it would fit, not sure of the slightly larger tire size would cause any issues with the effectiveness of their product though.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend thanks again.
Wished there was a 29" fat tire 🤪🤪🤪
I would check that out! Seeing how huge these 27.5x4.5” are mounted up it would take some bike to go even bigger!
How many studs will I need for the 29"?
I guess that could vary depending on the tire specifically, or how many you choose to use. Terrene's website should have specifics as to how many they use in their studded tires.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend I didn't see that listed. I'll check again
I called them. 192 per tire for 29 inch
@@RobBlazoff Feel free to contact them directly I am sure they will help you out!
No 27.5 x 3.0? 😢
Yeah, Terrene uses 2.8 in their plus sizes. Personally I don’t think I will notice a major different between 2.8/3.0. I will have to get my calipers out and see how much difference there really is, just looking at them by eye can’t say I see much difference.
Like and subscribe! What is the height and width of the 4.5 tire on the 80 rim?
Unfortunately I didn’t take any measurements. However for a better reference, I have a few side by side comparisons of the 27.5x4.5 with other tires that may help. You can find them in the playlist below:
th-cam.com/play/PLZrEXKDmvWZVDwKx-z8YKUxqZKYsiofP3.html&si=xN4sSjQYsJdN_8bq
@@ElevationEveryWeekend I bought an ICAN SN01 carbon frame and I want to find out if the 27.5x4.5 tires on the 80 rim fit into it.
@@AleksandrMZK It would appear they list 27.5x3-4.5” for that frame on their website. I would reach out to them directly to be sure though.

The cost of these tires is just painful.
All good tires are expensive these days, which is why you want to get it right the first time. Fat bike tires do last a long time though!
@@ElevationEveryWeekend not jumbo jims, they disappear in a moment.
I bought some kenda kraze on ebay at the cheapest for $80 each so yes it was a pain
