Thanks for the side-by-side comparison Wheels. Really helps to visualize the changes. As a 200 lb guy, the 27.5 x 4.5 has been great on my Nitro Stout. Especially with all the snow we had in Utah last winter. I watched other folks auger in and go over the bars with their 26" x 4" tires in the soft snow! Snow last weekend out here. Fat bike season is coming #fatiscoming
Thanks for this! It's near impossible for the average person to see all these different sizes side by side like this. I'm running 27.5x4 cake eaters and ended up leaving them on all year round. Snow, singletrack, gravel, commuting, even did a century ride on them. I keep thinking about going wider or skinnier but am worried I won't like either of them as much as the 27.5x4!
Super interesting video….the jj is that 4.4 ?? Compared to the cake eater 4.5 in the left the look small…what rim are those two tires mounted on ? Big thanks and happy trails
Pros and cons of a fatter tires? You probably mention it but I was thinking about coming down on size, from 27.5 x 3.0 to a 27.5 x 2.8. Thanks in advance 🤙🏽
That is a great size to run during the dirt season. With 3.0 you are going to have a larger contact point and might be slightly more comfortable for the long days in the saddle. With 2.8 you'll find you still get that plus size traction, but it will be lighter and roll a bit faster. Hope this helps!

I just got a Juiced HyperScorpion Ebike. The front tire has two bumps on it near the rim. Which means it's time to change them out because the tires are junk. I never thought finding tires would be so challenging. When I look at the sidewall of the tire, the only info I get is 20x4 1/4. When I search for that size tire online it seems impossible to find. I find a whole lot of 20x4. I'm curious as to whether the latter would be compatible with the rims I have seeing as it's lacking the extra 1/4 that comes stock.

I'm new to fat bikes, and mine is an ebike. I have 26x4 fat tires, and while I really enjoy the ride, I am wondering if I have the correct tires for my riding conditions. I ride mostly on groomed trails (rail-to-trail conversions). I do ride maybe 20% on roads to get to and from and transition between those groomed trails. I don't (or haven't yet) ride on snow or sand. I'm wondering if a 27.5x3 might be better for my needs in terms of rolling resistance and battery longevity on the ebike.
When you say groomed I’m assuming you mean a gravel mix. In all reality anything smaller would make you more efficient but you lose some of the smoothness. For gravel, rails to trails type riding I is a gravel specific bike like the Growler Session IPA. It runs a 700x50 tire with a faster rolling tread. In all reality the only reason you should want to make this modification is if you are running out of battery on your rides. I wouldn’t recommend that wide of a rim for a 3” tire. Traditionally I would say keep your rim width between 35mm - 50mm. You will lose the shape of the tire when you go too thin of a tire on too wide of a rim. It will degrade your ride quality.

Awesome video mate. Thinking about getting a 27.5 x 4.0 Van Helga for the rear this winter. I have 2 wheels. One 50mm and the other 80mm. Which would you go for? Thanks Tom
Dumb question but I’m assuming if I presently have 26”x4.8” tires and I want to go to 27.5”x4.5” then I need different rims? A 27.5” tire won’t fit on the same rim as my 26” tires?
My wheel set is 27.5 and the following is true about the rims that I have. For 27.5” wheels with a 60-90mm rim, I can fit tires with the width from 3.8”-4.5” and my Fatbike came with the Maxxis Minion FBF 27.5" x 3.8" EXO, TR and Maxxis Minion FBR 27.5" x 3.8" EXO, TR. If I decided to put on a tire that is 27.5 x 4.5 on the Front and back will that cause my bottom bracket to be higher. Or will the frame only raise up if I was to go to a 29er wheelset combination?
Hey Pete, If you switch from a 3.8" tire to a 4.5" tire the BB height will get slightly higher as it's a taller tire. This will not negatively affect the bikes handling since the BB drop remains the same.
height, that is, the largest tire in diameter, we say 27.5x4.50 .29x3.25 tires available, they seem wide-ranging, but I am not sure which one is complete, can you help me, I wonder which one has the highest diameter, even if it is not the thickest?
I’ve never seen a 29x3.25 so I can’t comment on that but if you are comparing a 27.5x4.5 to 29x3 a 27.5x4.5 will be the taller tire. Keep in mind not all tire specs are equal. For example the 27.5x4.5 Maxxis colossal is smaller than the 27.5x4.5 Terrene Cake Eater. Both the same manufacturing “size” but not the same size in the real world.
The longest rubber terrene cake you've ever seen is 27.5x4.5 mi, do they roll very well, can they overcome obstacles? According to jumbo jim 4.8 and maxxis 4.8. I use 26x4.0 in our country, there are almost no options. If I buy 27.5x4.5 from abroad, it will fit on the front fork. I'm undecided but I want a new size and excitement
There are two determining factors for what will fit in your frame. Tire size vs rim width and what the Scott actually allows. If everything is stock I would contact Scott to see how large of a tire you could fit. I would say based on what I could research the answer is 26x2.25. If you want to go bigger you’ll have to change bikes.
I have a set of Jumbo Jims on 50mm Rabbit holes and a set of 26x4.8 Minions on 80mm Mule Futs. The Minions are much taller than the Jims. Not quite as tall as your 27.5 fat set but I think they have the same circumference of the 29er plus in your lineup. I know that 27.5 is the new thing in the fat world but I for me, a MN 6 month fat bike winter rider going into his fifth season I would rather have the 26 tire and profile. I guess we will see how things shake out and if I were competing I would consider 27.5 but I want the float and squat of the 26.
27.5'' in 4.5'' width is no match for 26''er in 4.8'' width on groomed trails. Whatever they are saying, that is the fact ;-) Keep the 26er and be happy. I would say 27.5 is maybe better for city trails where people are walking deep narrow path to the snow. Once I had the 27.5 in front and 26er wider tire on the back. That was awesome setup, sick indeed! Best in both worlds and it was like riding a trail bike. I sold my older fatbike so I don't have 26er anymore. Maybe some day I'm going to get mixed setup again!
Great video, thanks! But just letting you know folks, that difference in height should be divided by two as all hubs aren't in line. I have 29x3.0 minions on 45 mm rims and they are 768 mm OD. Saw some posts about terrene 27.5x4.5 on 80 mm rim and OD is 785 mm.
In height, that is, the largest tire in diameter is 27.5x4.50, can we say .29x3.25 tires are available, they seem to be extensive, but I am not sure which one is complete.
You would need to consult Raleigh but most likely it will not be possible. The bikes have to be specifically designed to allow a 3” wide tire in the rear triangle.
i have a 30 mm wide rim and 27.5 i keeps getting mixed reviews on what's the best width tire to put on my rim without getting that light bulb effect and edging the tire. what can you recommend for xc trail, everyday riding?
Currently there's very little on the market in terms of 27.5x4.5, unless you want studded in which case we have a few left on our website. If we had to guess there will probably be more on the market mid January.
Sir, i'm now using 26x4.0. I decide to get another pair of rims and tires. What is your opinion Sir, i should choose 27.5 or 29? And also the best tyre width?
You can use a 2.4" wide tire on a plus bike just not a plus rim. The only issue you may run into is when you go to the smaller tire you will also slightly lower your bottom bracket. If you are looking for more speed many plus bikes like the Growler American Pale Ale can also run 29x2.4 tires.
The 2.25 will work on the rim but you need to double check to see if your frame has enough clearance for the 2.25. In most cases it will have no issues clearing the frame.
We are running the Mulefut 80 sl. here is a link to them growlerbikes.com/collections/wheelsets/products/sunringle-mulefut-80sl-wheelset-150-197-tubeless-ready-1
It’s 2 parts. 1st they all have to have the same hub spacing and 2nd the frame has to be able to accept the larger tires. In particularly the 29+ and 27.5x4.5
@@jc6876 in theory yes. The Circumference of the putter diameter of a 26x4 is equivalent to a 27x3. Obviously I don’t know which bike you have but in theory it should work
Now i'm using 26x4.0. I decide to get another QR wheelset (27.5X3.0). Question: - How about the spokes? Can i use the standard spokes for 27.5? Or i need to use longer spokes? Because the wheelhub are longer than ordinary mtb. This is what i understood. 😄 Tq sir.
Hey there, thanks for watching! Spoke length will vary depending on your rim and hub combo, so your best bet would be to either use a spoke length calculator or head to your local bike shop for advice.
This is all good and invaluable information, but the region one lives and rides In dictates most of this information also. What a person rides in the upper midwest, will not be ideal for someone in the west of east.... people should also know that fact. -Joe
Some people like their fatties even on the road because of looks. However, what about tyre pressures vs volume? I have read some people in forums claiming their tyres, or rims blowing due to air expansion in hot weather conditions because of the big volume of air in those large tyres...have you heard or seen something similar? (obviously that is no problem in snowy weather for which these tyres were initially designed
Traditionally fat bikes start at 3.8” wide tires. Most people would consider your bike a Plus Bike. It’s the middle ground between a standard bike and a fat bike.
YOU KEEP ON TALKING BUT WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TIRE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. YOU SHOULD BE POINTING AND SHOWING THE TIRE OR THE INFORMATION COMING OUT FROM YOUR MOUT SO WE KNOW.

In height, that is, the largest tire in diameter is 27.5x4.50, can we say .29x3.25 tires are available, they seem to be extensive, but I am not sure which one is complete.
29er plus setup with 170 or 190mm rear hub fatbike setup is ok right?
It all depends on the frame, your best bet is to reach out to your manufacturer. Thanks for watching!
i have raleigh[MTB] current is 26 x1.95 rim and tyre. i want to convert in plus bike by installing 26x3 . is it possible ?
You would need to consult Raleigh but most likely it will not be possible. The bikes have to be specifically designed to allow a 3” wide tire in the rear triangle.
Sure I'll consult from Raleigh and thanks for the advice!
Can i have 1 question.45mm or 50mm rim can fir the the 26x4.8 minion fbf?
arsinio tan I would not recommend it. If you are going to run a 4.8 I would recommend no smaller then a 80mm rim
I would not recommend that setup. For a 4.8" wide tire you should go with a 80mm wide rim.
i have a 30 mm wide rim and 27.5 i keeps getting mixed reviews on what's the best width tire to put on my rim without getting that light bulb effect and edging the tire. what can you recommend for xc trail, everyday riding?
I would stick to a 2.25" on a 30mm rim. Take a look at the Rocket Ron 2.25. www.schwalbetires.com/bike_tires/off-road_tires/rocket_ron438
where can I get a 27.5x4.5? wheel and tire
Currently there's very little on the market in terms of 27.5x4.5, unless you want studded in which case we have a few left on our website. If we had to guess there will probably be more on the market mid January.
Can use tire 27.5 x 3.80 to my rim 26 , 80mm ??
No, a 27.5" tire will not work on a 26" rim
Would 27.5x3.8 work on snow trails?
Hi Eric! a 3.8" tire will work on a groomed trail or hard pack but if you need to break trail I would recommend a wider tire like the 27.5x4.5.
Number 4 size please
i have 2.25 tires will 2.35 be problem ?
Most likely not. How wide is your rim?
Sir, i'm now using 26x4.0.
I decide to get another pair of rims and tires. What is your opinion Sir, i should choose 27.5 or 29?
And also the best tyre width?
All depends on where you're riding and personal preference. Both are great options!
Can i use 2.4 tire on plus size bike
You can use a 2.4" wide tire on a plus bike just not a plus rim. The only issue you may run into is when you go to the smaller tire you will also slightly lower your bottom bracket. If you are looking for more speed many plus bikes like the Growler American Pale Ale can also run 29x2.4 tires.
Have A hm mountain bike it has 29 inch 2.10 will 2.25 work.
The 2.25 will work on the rim but you need to double check to see if your frame has enough clearance for the 2.25. In most cases it will have no issues clearing the frame.
1 tyre size name
Thanks for watching!
Can I use size 27x1 1/4 in a 27x 1 rim?
yes
hi, what rims are the 27.5x3.8?
We are running the Mulefut 80 sl. here is a link to them
growlerbikes.com/collections/wheelsets/products/sunringle-mulefut-80sl-wheelset-150-197-tubeless-ready-1
Do you have 26x4.9 tires of fat bike
Can i use 2.4 tire size on plus size bike
@@christianjarabe6629 You would get better performance out of a 2.4" wide tire when its mounted to a 30mm wide rim.
What is the circumference of 26×4.0 fat tyre
The circumference is approximately 29.5"
very good, well done.
All these wheels fit on that 1 bike… so that means all the hubs are the same size?
It’s 2 parts. 1st they all have to have the same hub spacing and 2nd the frame has to be able to accept the larger tires. In particularly the 29+ and 27.5x4.5
@@brewhousebikesgrowlerbikes4505 so If I have a 26x4 fat bike, I can definitely fit a 27x2.6-3.0 for as long as i have the same hub spacing?
@@jc6876 in theory yes. The Circumference of the putter diameter of a 26x4 is equivalent to a 27x3. Obviously I don’t know which bike you have but in theory it should work
Now i'm using 26x4.0.
I decide to get another QR wheelset (27.5X3.0).
Question:
- How about the spokes? Can i use the standard spokes for 27.5? Or i need to use longer spokes? Because the wheelhub are longer than ordinary mtb. This is what i understood. 😄
Tq sir.

How much punishment can the carbon rims take? I like that last option. The 27.5 x 4.0. I believe these are on your Double Stout.
Our carbon wheel set is very durable, 32 hole rims with brass nipples and very tough rims, all at a light weight.
I have a bike with 26×3.0 tyre...can i call it a fatbike?....
Traditionally fat bikes start at 3.8” wide tires. Most people would consider your bike a Plus Bike. It’s the middle ground between a standard bike and a fat bike.
@@brewhousebikesgrowlerbikes4505 so i can consider my bike as a semi-fatbike right...got the speed of mtb and the supremacy of a fatbike...perfect
27.5 fat.. now that is fat. Makes the 29+ and 26 fat look diminutive.
Haha true! Thanks for watching!
Hi
YOU KEEP ON TALKING BUT WE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT TIRE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT. YOU SHOULD BE POINTING AND SHOWING THE TIRE OR THE INFORMATION COMING OUT FROM YOUR MOUT SO WE KNOW.
Use your inside voice.
29'' with 3.0 tires is universal setup
Just not possible to make a video of a regular normal 26 X 2.125 beach cruiser tire and explain what those number mean. No we have to talk about some elaborate ego freak shit. How pathetic
27.5 fat is just too damn big imo
It’s the fastest rolling option out of all the fat options. Give it a spin. It’s amazing!
