Hi, my name is Tommy. I am a fat bike enthusiast and feature video content riding them in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado. My channel focuses on bike and related gear reviews, and adventurer based content in the mountains. I also enjoy travel and incorporating new locations as well. I also am the owner of a Toyota Tacoma TRD off-road and a miniature Golden Doodle, and feature those occasionally as well.

Here is my one year review of the Ibis DV9. I said this was one of the best bikes I ever rode, do I still feel that way?

I've cut down a set of odi grips at the end and put them on the horns they work well for me (your mileage may vary) lol😅
@@jeffbehnke8605 I have thought about doing the same with ESI grips as well, I had to do it on the Corner bars.
I hope this helps
Hi EEW, are you running the rear tire in the reverse orientation or the forward orientation? I just tried them yesterday out back in the rear orientation and the traction was unbelievable but so was the rolling resistance. I wonder if the rear will roll faster in the forward orientation.
@@petercroce I was running them as recommended for front and back orientation. But I know a lot of directional tires can be flipped to alter the ride characteristics a bit, so I would say give it try!
Love your channel man, all solid info, NO BS filler 👍. When you talk Surly fatbikes, I listen. I have a Wednesday but am looking at an ICT in last years Safety Mask blue. I know your ICT is large, mind if I ask your height/inseam? I'm 5'-11"/33" and 55 years old. I found my large Wednesday a bit long in the TT/reach for my liking so I shortened the TT with a shorter stem and Surly Sunrise bar. Wondering if the medium ICT would be better for me. Any thoughts you can share are appreciated my dude.
@@smokeycanuck8058 sizing is a tough one in general from afar. Surly bikes do tend to run a little bigger than most others in my experience. I have a 2014 Pugsley in medium that is perfectly comfortable for me, but yes my ICT is a large and I do think it fits me a bit better. I am also 5’11” with about a 32/33 inseam. My reach is what I would consider proportional. Surly fatbikes also tend to have longer stems, so as you know adjusting that can help with reach. If you can test ride the ICT to find out for sure it would be ideal, but I know that’s not always possible. Thanks for watching the channel, much more Surly fat bike stuff is on the way!
Any idea how much it weighs?? I have 2024 ProCaliber 9.5 with full shimano XT drivetrain, Fox 34 120mm travel and dropper seat post. It's blazing fast now and fun to ride. I might get DV9 or even Yeti Arc next year. You cannot have too many bikes.
@@MrWolf2212 My large DV9, set up tubeless is 26.3lbs as ridden (bottle cages, pedals, trail bell). This was slightly lighter than my 2022 Procal, which is running a lighter than stock Reba fork.
if it had class2 and class3 capability i would buy it so fast my own head would spin
@@bva8252 Yeah it was definitely designed to operate on trails, many of which prohibit class 2 and above.
@@ElevationEveryWeekend yep, i get it... although i don't care about prohibitions in my geographic area. The Surface604 Boar Explorer is listed at 50 lbs and is class1 thru class3... apparently it can be turned into a class1-only by disconnecting the quick connect at the throttle. Although a rear hub motor is not ideal, it seems at least on paper to be a decent fat tire ebike... do you know anything about it?
@@bva8252 I don’t know anything about that bike. In taking a quick look, it appears to have lower end, but respectable name brand components, which is good. I can’t comment on any of the battery/drive components. It has decent tires on it as well. It does appear to have a more upright commuter geometry, which you may prefer. Personally I prefer the more modern trail geometry of a regular fat bike, which the Borealis Keystone maintains.
Was great seeing that video again she sure liked the snow❤❤
I too have a DV9 LG SLX version and put almost 800 mils on it since I got it a year ago. For me it took a lot of getting use to and I almost sold the bike, but it’s currently my “do everything” bike and it really does everything well, especially climbing. I too changed to a 70mm stem and now I’m back to the 50mm because I like the it better for tech climbs and manuals. The best upgrade was tires, the Rekon Race are fast, but grip is just not good enough in the AZ desert and places like Sedona. I’m now on Maxxis Ardents 2.4 front/back and they roll almost as fast at the Rekons and handle the chunk much better. At some point I want to try a fast rolling 2.6 in the rear because at 61 years old the AZ chunk can get a bit rough. Anyway I enjoyed your 1 year review and I look forward to comparing upgrades in the future…
Yeah I think a tire swap is a good call especially for any real trail riding. Thanks for watching!

Are fat bikes good for riding on snowy roads?
Yes, though you may want studded tires if you are dealing with hard packed ice
Cool video and a bike! I was wondering what is the angle of your stem?
@@archibaldstokes it is the Wren Sports lightweight AL stem, 70mm with a 6 degree rise.

Definitely ice cream truck with extreme cold climate where I am at worry about carbon frame stressing
What is the real inflated width difference?
@@Geenimetsuri I didn’t take those measurements. The actual width itself only has a negligible impact on the performance, however the height difference, which you can easily see in the video, has a much bigger impact on performance as it translates into the length of the contact patch, especially when aired down.
Do you like the stem length? I see the bars already go out far
The stem on the Pugs is pretty long, but yes it works just the same (pretty well) with the Moloko bars on this bike.
MTB IS DEAD
Still going strong around here
Yo! I have a full sus fatbike, been tryna find a suitable bar for quite a while now since I'm trying to upgrade mine from stocks Might try the surly corner bars after all! Thanks for the info! And great vid?
@@unclelobo3552 They are definitely fun and effective if you want drop bars. If you are doing a lot of full suspension trail riding they may not be ideal for that
I can't wait for my Moonlander 2.0 to arrive. I always wanted a Moonlander over here in the Uk but they are as rare as hens teeth over here and hard to come by aspecially me being tall so the big sizes are non excistant. I was blown away about specs of the bike but to think we're days away from the release date over here and there is still very little details and videos about it. £4000 and £4700 in some uk shops online is a massive price tag to pay for something that's so under the radar information wise. There's only a few videos online to basically base your decision on buying one of these rigs.
@@bigdee6207 yeah it’s definitely a niche bike in a niche segment, but I think most people will know if they need it or not. I definitely don’t need what it has to offer, but I would love to try one out. Enjoy it when it arrives!!

$1399 NOW, CLUMSY TRACTOR
I'm considering using one of these for gravel rides. Does the softtail actually do anything?
@@lmbraga I rode mine on gravel often. The ISOspeed does help, I like to compare it to having a larger volume rear tire on the back running lower pressure. But, it is not really equivalent to actual suspension travel.

Awesome video, for back country snow riding (here in Canada, Quebec), wich tire would you recommand between the YKY and the Gnarwhal 4.5 inch ?
I have not used the Gnarwhal, but the Bontrager tires are on my list to try. I will say that for max snow traction I would probably want the 4.5” tire size, even though the 4.3 YKY is a high traction tire for its size.

After a year , any negatives on taco rail?
@@erichriede8844 For the rail itself and the mounting arm, no negative issues. For their phone mount, yes. While the mount still functions well mechanically, over time from repeated use the rubberized padding wears out and the adhesive bleeds through and ends up on the phone itself. It is super annoying, I am still trying to figure out a permanent fix for it.
Thanks for the apples to apples comparison. New to both fat tires and e-bikes. Questions: 1. The “rear” transmission is wireless and apparently has a small battery. If, for some reason, the electronics fail, can the gears somehow still be switched manually? 2. Similarly, if the main 630Mw battery dies, how difficult is it to leg power out of the boondocks on a 56 pounder? I was in a store checking out a QuietKat and the salesman said it would “suck” on that 75 lb beast, not to mention just getting it in the bed of my pickup.
@@bva8252 I think for the most part if the battery dies you will be really limited in changing gears on the Transmission, I think I have seen that there is limited ability to manually move it a little bit, but can’t say I tested that. As for the bikes battery dying, yes riding a 56lbs fat bike with no e-assist wouldn’t be ideal, it will largely depend on the terrain. Hopefully you still have all of your gears which would be really helpful, and make it doable. I think one of those 75lbs e-fatbikes would just be brutal, and why I personally wouldn’t even consider them. I have ridden one of those and they handle really sluggish to me even with e-assist for forward motion.
I love my fatbike but I have a lot of trouble getting the 26' x 4.6 tires that I need.
@@sebastianzorrilla7491 I haven’t checked recently but try the Terrene 26x4.6 Cake Eaters, very good all rounders
Good video review ....WTB saddles have been pretty good for me over the years ..... Did The Tour of California Alps on them ....10 hours on the bike no problem ....
I love this new bike and would buy out in a heartbeat as a go anywhere do anything bike. I would commute with it on the public streets, recreate with it on bike expeditions, go gravel grinding, across fields and along the beach -- just like I do now on my Pugsley. My bike goes where I go. The End. And when it can't -- I find a new one that can. And this new Surly can definitely go wherever I want to go. I can see where Surly is going with this bike. Surly and I think alike... on my Pugsley, I removed the front and rear derailleur and built a wheel with a Shimano 8 speed hub in it. It was a dream come true! Absolutely some of the most maintenance free fun I've ever had on a bike. Knowing what I know now however, I should have installed a Rolloff instead. The Shimano performs horribly here in our South Dakota winters. The extreme cold freezes the lube inside the hub and it is a true bear to pedal when that happens. But when that happens, I whip out my Jones LWB Heavy Duty Electric bike and bypass all of that nonsense. Looks like what I need do now is sell the Pug and buy the new Moonlander! It shall be my new maintenance free marauding machine! Fat's-where-it's-at. Period. I don't care what kind of driving I'm doing. I'm doing it on a fat bike.
Great review and nice trail footage. Thanks for posting.

I'm trying to decide between a Flume and Crestone. Did the Crestone do a noticeably better job dampening trail vibration? Every bit helps, the older you get :)
Honestly running any of the fat tires any frame compliance difference wasn’t noticeable, but the Crestone frame is lighter which was noticeable.
Is it still worth buying the iso-speed Procaliber 9.5 if it is priced EUR 1500 and that is the budget?
@@ag1805x I think it is a great bike, so I would say yes it is worth it, especially at a discount. I still ride mine all the time even with my Ibis DV9 as an option. I still haven’t ridden the new Procal to determine if it is any better.
With the road conditions where I ride I could weld a bottle to the bike it would still come out.
Haha, that doesn’t sound fun!
Great review. Your perspective on the various aspects of the bike and how and where you ride really helped me make my purchase decision. Thanks.
@@TechTraction it’s a good bike, enjoy!
This guy is a bit of a fat bike weight weeny. I'm a bit sceptical about how much any weight saving can be felt while grinding along on those fatties.
Thanks for the vids, and let everyone know they provide a nice discount for military and police if you email from your government email. 🇺🇸 Just ordered a Borealis after eatching your vids!
@@pb5202 nice!
They’ve called them saddles for a long time, but I don’t see any stirrups.
