I tried this on my client the other day, and her hair would not lift pass a level 8! I even bleach it while it’s wet, still didn’t budge! I told her this will take at least 2 more sessions. It’s so much work! They see Instagram photos but really don’t know the process behind it . Thank you for explaining everything!
I really appreciate you going through your thought process and showing how it's not always as easy as oll of these instagram posts make it seem. I recently transitioned my mom to grey and it was on hell of a ride!
I was so feeling your pain during this process…. I just wonder if you would have rehilighted it the second day before toning with like. 30 vol and a different lightener, like Joico if maybe it would have pulled her up another level or so. Then toned with your final formula…. But it did turn out beautifully!!
I saw a hair colorist that works with Redken Brews that are specifically created for men with gray hair. She liften a lady from brunette with silver roots and used the Dark ash to tone her, and it turned perfectly dark silver. Omg I was shook how easy and creative she approached the mission
@@hairbykristijennings6648 Thanks for showing the realities of a true "CORRECTION" where the desired result is a Smokey gray with a pastel silver. It's not easy or guaranteed every time. Thanks for the real scoop.
I love watching you do your thing YOURE THE BEST I always learn so much I cannot believe that last colour was a level 5!? It looks like she grew her hair out like all grey. I just can’t, my mind is blown !
7-21 tones really dark. It sits at level 7 but looks way darker. It does fade beautifully though into a very ashy level 7. It's basically a great shadow root and correction color. Also, very good brunette toner for anyone who hates warmth in their hair. Wow! That came out beautiful and a TON of work! People don't realize how much work it entails and hence the expense.
So I’m not even a hair stylist, just at the beginning of my gray grow out process, but I loved how you explained everything. It’s so easy to see pictures on Pinterest and think, oh that’s nice, I’d love to do that, never thinking about all the time, energy, and money that goes into it. You also saved me from attempting color remover on my hair. I was already having nightmares about trying it and my hair turning orange.
I really appreciate this, I've been trying to go mushroom brown to blend my gray in for a while and the hair stylists I saw were not able to convey why it's so difficult or expensive. At both consultations I was told that it would be 2-3 appointments and I'd have caramel colored hair for a while. At least I understand more of the process now while feeling dejected by the going gray process. Great work.
So glad you posted this! I have a similar service later today that I’ve been STRESSING over. I feel a bit more confident now. Absolutely going to use your talking points for a second consultation before I touch her hair!!!
The Guy Tang is great for this service. I pretone with the titanium and clear and then tone with the 10ss. His shadow ash will cool it down a bit at level. I love it. I use the 7 and 9 all the time to cool down a natural. The dark shadows sirs at a 5 and can be added to ANY color to smoke it out and works great in your formula for those paint between "peppers." I do the entire top and sides /crown with super microslices. And lift it all to a 10. I have battled that level 8 too much to know I can't get "Smokey silver" from an 8. This turned out so nice.
Nice work Kristi!! My question is, how is she gonna maintain that darkish grey tone at home? I don't think a purple shampoo would be strong enough to do that tho.🤔
Her hair turned out fantastic Kristi! As far as you talking through the vidio well, that's exactly what I like, since I need information how the coloring process is done plus the dos n don't and what to expect when you visit a hairsalon as far as costwise. Definitely tons info thanks ❤
I appreciate how much you talk, you are a very relatable stylist! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and sharing your knowledge of color!! I learn so much from you!! I understand this is a very touchy subject and a lot of people would rather not talk about their prices but It’s just an idea. Lol Thanks again!! You are awesome!!
Just running across this video and reading the comments but will watch tomorrow . I had a consult 1.5 months ago about this and long story short, she got me to a level 8 and toned it, yucky orange still. Then toned again. Yucky. Then another stylist with a different brand toned. Yucky. I wound up with cut damaged hair and 400 out. So today I purchased multiple direct dyes and used pravana silver semi on my root and mystic fog purple pulp riot on the rest. Plan A didn't work so plan B will be silver roots and multiple purple and grays throughout for the next 2 years. Developer will never touch THIS head again.😁 But as I can already see in the comments, you're a dedicated and HONEST stylist, kudos to you!😊
Thank you! Yes, I try to be VERY honest with my clients and what’s realistic. The only thing on my mind is the integrity of the hair and not causing damage. And also if we can’t accomplish it, we just won’t try
@@hairbykristijennings6648 you're a needle in a haystack! And with that said, I've been retired from hair about 6 years now and I felt the same way...I turned down MANY people with ideas that I knew couldn't be achieved without them leaving their hair on my floor. Communication (as you did) is key as well....I would've been thrilled with a DEEP gray deposit/tone over my existing orange highlights but I honestly think she was a bit shook? And I know giving her pointers would've irritated her so I let it go. LOL. At least I know how to reroute it (albeit a plan B) and I know I can repair my damage eventually so all is good. Kudos to your work ethics and awesome work!😊💖
Your authenticity is so inspiring… beautiful job, and talk all you want… it literally gets inside my head and validates the individual struggles and self doubt that we all battle.
Thank you so much for understanding! It gets me sometimes that people complain about talking, I'm like do you want to learn or not? Sometimes it's just nice to know we all have self doubt at times and that it's not always the perfect game plan. Thank you so much for watching and your kind comment!
Kudos to you for even accepting this task. Personally, I would’ve done baby lights with 30 vol and a major haircut and did a paint between with lightener and toned with a titanium. Don’t be afraid of a stronger developer. There’s a time and place for it. But wow, you did an amazing job! 🙌🏼 Also, for all the steps you took on all that hair, your timing was really good. It would’ve taken me a decade.
Since flew to me I was so scared to not give her what she wanted or to cause damage. I never use 30 vol tho cause whenever I do, 20 performs better and I just don’t want to worry about damaging the hair…… also she wasn’t willing to chop 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️ lol but yes that would have helped, she let me get a little snip in at least, thankfully 😂 honestly the service took much longer cause she was so resistant to going darker but I’m glad she did in the end
@@hairbykristijennings6648 you did everything you could do to try and please her, and I’m glad she left happy when it was said and done. Her hair looks gorgeous, long, thick and healthy. I would be terrified to have a client fly to me. Just that alone puts on so much pressure!
Yes this! Beautiful result but a higher developer in stages would have done the work of both the remover and the Lightner that would have gotten her where she initially wanted . Don't be scared of a higher volume developer , there is a definite place for that .
Beautiful, Kristi! I am so proud of you when I hear you going through your consultation & price quote. Well done! (One day I may stop coloring and find myself in your chair.)
This looks exactly like my hair…..orange and grey. Trying to go all grey but it is hard. Can’t afford this type of service so am just biting the bullet. Thanks for the explaination.
Purple shampoo for yellow Blue shampoo for orange Only leave 2 to 5 minutes, then conditioning The sun turns mine since I was a brunette in my past life. A bleach wash with 10 or 20 volume doesn't cost much either to pull if orange is dye. I love my natural salt and pepper. It's worth protecting. Good luck ❤
Allot of people want to be light like right now. And sometimes to not compromise the integrity of the hair you have to tell them, this is going to be a process. I went from level one blue black to platinum blonde. But we did color remover, heavy highlights. And I looked crazy for about a month, because my hair had been red before I went black. And then the next sitting we heavy highlighted it and I started to look more normal. And this was all before olaplex came out. And I had no idea how to take care of blonde hair!
Hi kristi I’m wondering if you’ve ever tried the bleaches especially formulated for dark hair? They have a lot of blue in them that can really help with the orange stage
Yes, but it takes at least one whole day 8-10 hrs and the toners require refreshing to not look "blonde," and It's expensive. Some expect to "never have to vol or their hair again," but there is some toner upkeep until it grows out or is cut off.
I’m too far away from any gray hair artists. So when I got about 2 1/2 to 3 inches of gray hair grown out, I just shaved the rest of my hair off 😂 quick and easy. My hair was back to a good length within two years and I was surprised at how well I pulled off the shaved super short hair considering I have a long face.
The first one I ever did took me 5 hours and the clients complained about it taking 5 hours! LOL. This service requires an hourly charge that includes the color and mask costs. It can easily take 12 hours. It sometimes costs $100 in color, removers and treatments, alone. I have broken it down in 3 sessions for them. They just go lighter and lighter blonde, and it requires picking up all the dark pieces with a full head of foils. No surprises for the cost. Th he consultation shpuld include a range. A starting cost and the hourly BREAKDOWN and the high end cost.
Awesome video, as usual!! And again, every time you say something about people complaining about you "talking too much " I just scream at my phone because they are on YOUR channel and can go somewhere else if they don't like it!!!! Ok, rant over lol Question for you - Why did you leave the ends out when you put the 5 on her hair at the end?
Hello! And thank you! I know I shouldn't have to say it but it's frustrating. I guess I'm trying to say it nice in the video vs like a b* in the comments 😂😂🤷♀️. I left the ends out to preserve brightness cause she really wanted light pieces throughout. Thank you always for your support!
This is what I want to do to my hair, I'm getting so gray, but I have natural dark hair, so I wouldn't care if my hair was dark, as long as the gray was blended in, and I didn't have to color it anymore. LOL.
This endresult is so pretty, but what a big job and so many steps! I have a question, have u tried the cool lift additive to the bleach ? I think it lifts and Tones it at the same time when i have really dark hair or colored hair😍👏🏻
It actually looks lighter then when she was at that brassy stage. Much more depth. Do you have any videos with grey transformations on dark boxed died hair?
This is how i made my hair!!1 after years of struggling with grey hair,,,finally discover the best color for my fine hair.. i will post a video on my channel with my transformation!!!
This gives me secondhand anxiety for you. I feel like I've had clients like this so many times before. You handled it really well but she made it harder by wanting the impossible. I want to blend my gray, but be ashy but also light. Yikes! I always say it goes sideways when they try too hard to drive the bus. I'm the stylist, I drive the bus! The end result was beautiful but I agree with you.... could've saved a bunch of time if she'd gone with your initial recommendation.
I did this in the UK and once the toner wore off after 4 weeks it looks terrible. I’m currently growing my grey hair again as I had to chop it off. It’s ok if you want to go back every few months for a toner but if not it does end up looking blonde again. Well mine did and I only used the products I was told to.
Finally ordered blonde solutions over Black Friday it’s soooo expensive 😩 but am dying to try it. Also fyi I tried k18 on a client and on myself last week and HOLY SHAT!!! You aNeed to try it!!! Next time I’m still gonna add Olaplex to my bleach and spray the k18 on hair for some double protection/healing but damn that shit is sorcery. I wouldn’t try it for years bc I’m dedicated to Olaplex but just did it and am in love
I was wondering why you folded over the foils. The way that you do? Is that just the way you do it? Or is it to try and capture the heat from the scout question? Mark i've never seen it done that way so I was curious what your thought process is period
If she is whole (or part) Asian, Indian, native American or Latine, then that might have made both her hair lifting and processing more difficult. Guy Tang talks about that in his videos. I'm so glad that you made it through!
She’s part native I want to say? But I worked in a Spanish salon before, I was the only white girl so I feel like I learned allot there. I think it’s the henna color she used.
My stylist is helping with my gray transition by doing a partial highlight every 5-6 weeks! Despite that, the top is mostly white!! This is very expensive and not sure how to find someone who has more experience?
A lot of mistakes were made here but that’s how we learn and get better, props to you for posting it! I was scared for you tho Kristi the client was giving me Aileen Wournos for the whole 2 days!
fascinating, I still can't understand how the first mix with 7-21 on 8-11 and 8 ... making the background for the next coverage of 5 ... but that 5 corresponds to the tint level ... or is it a reflection? truly surprised by the result. Great job❤️🥇🏆🎉
This is awesome Kristi!!! I appreciate you taking the time to make the videos that you share. You can never learn enough or too much about color! I'm going to buy some of that color remover. I was gifted Pravana's Color Remover from a friend about year to year and a half ago. Because I had never used it before, I tested it out on a mannequin. It smelled like rotten eggs. It...was... HORRIBLE!!! I threw it away. It took a few months to get rid of the smell on that mannequin's hair. Thank you ma'am.😁~APRIL LIPKE
I love your videos! It teaches me so much- but perhaps the bleach didn’t lift as high as you wanted because the first application of the bleach her hair was wet! Maybe that’s why? But stunning work as always❤
Hi kristy genning can you do you do video on your hear color what color you put on your hear color what developer you us what developer you us i lik your hear color
Would the hair still lift if you use 10 vol with perm color? Specifically asking this to use a 10 vol with Wella Color Charm Perm Liq Color 050 Cooling Violet mixed with Wella Color Charm T16 Toner. My hair is porous and color deposits even with 10 vol.
Where are you located? I'm in Oklahoma and people complain abt having to pay $150 on a service that takes me 4-6 hours 🙄 I've done hair 18 years, I know my worth, im Abt to start charging more especially w the price of everything going up. Btw I appreciate your videos 💛
The hair came out beautifully! I know how much you stressed when the color doesn’t come out what you want to. I was wondering if you put guy tang 5 all over the hair or left some part of the hair and did you use demi permenent developer with Guytang 5 permenent? Is there reason for it?
At minute 38 I explain and show what was used. I didn’t apply all over because the goal was to keep lighter gray pieces instead of covering up totally. I only wanted to use 6 vol to not cause any damage by using a stronger developer
Watched the complete breakdown your truly the best and she flew out there I could fly and most definitely it'd be my honor North Carolina is where Im at if I was to do that it would definitely be to you!!!! 💜
Hi genning kristy can you do tutorial bayleyg balck and red what bleach you us what dwveloper you us can you balyeg black and red if you can tell four som budy four help baleyeg

Yes, a lot of hair breaks off before lifting. Jack Martin doesn't accept everyone.

I did this in the UK and once the toner wore off after 4 weeks it looks terrible. I’m currently growing my grey hair again as I had to chop it off. It’s ok if you want to go back every few months for a toner but if not it does end up looking blonde again. Well mine did and I only used the products I was told to.
What the keratin treatment you use? Can you make a video?
Love this !!!! 💜💜 Beautiful Job!! you out did yourself on this one most definitely looks wonderful My dream hair color seriously 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thank you so much!
I like K-18 alot but still use Olaplex some of the time, too.
Good job Kristi!! You did an awesome job at that!
To get maximum lift trap less hair and cover foil completely
That is beautiful! You did good!
Wow! How gorgeous! Amazing job.
How on earth !! Hats off lady 💚
A lot of mistakes were made here but that’s how we learn and get better, props to you for posting it! I was scared for you tho Kristi the client was giving me Aileen Wournos for the whole 2 days!
Wow, it looks beautiful ❤
Silver is the way to go 😁
You did amazing, Kristi! 👍🏼😍
fascinating, I still can't understand how the first mix with 7-21 on 8-11 and 8 ... making the background for the next coverage of 5 ... but that 5 corresponds to the tint level ... or is it a reflection? truly surprised by the result.
That was one of your most stressful videos for me 😮😂
Wow, it just melts together 🔥
I love your videos! It teaches me so much- but perhaps the bleach didn’t lift as high as you wanted because the first application of the bleach her hair was wet! Maybe that’s why? But stunning work as always❤
Hi kristy genning can you do you do video on your hear color what color you put on your hear color what developer you us what developer you us i lik your hear color
Hi Ms. Kristi, you did a great job!
Hi! The 5 shadow ash by guytang is it a blue base or green?
Blue
Thank you so much 💕💕
Hi question..so, did the Toner fade to Brasy after a few weeks?? If so, what did you tell her when she called?
Wow. The more of these videos I watch the more I think I will cut my dyed hair off and live with a pixie cut and wigs for awhile.
What formula would you recommend had her hair been that dark all the way through (for first time balayage)?
I've always colored my hair light blonde but now I want gray with highlights...is it harder to do that than blonde?? Can it be done in 1 appt??
Amazing!
Watched the complete breakdown your truly the best and she flew out there I could fly and most definitely it'd be my honor North Carolina is where Im at if I was to do that it would definitely be to you!!!! 💜
Thank you! Yes I was shocked she wanted to fly in!
Wow, great freaking work!!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL 😍

Hi genning kristy can you do tutorial bayleyg balck and red what bleach you us what dwveloper you us can you balyeg black and red if you can tell four som budy four help baleyeg
In my opion a ash blond treatment in the length would have been sufficient to create a smooth transition to the grow out.
She wanted it lighter
That looks super nice love your work 💗
AMAZING JOB
Beautiful color!
Wow! Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! You’re welcome!
Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you!
Guy Tang makes a clear color so that you could customize the levels. It might have helped in this situation.
(I'm not a professional but have watched almost all of his hair videos.)
