  • In this video I talk about the five differences between homeschool vs public school. I explain the differences between the traditional public school system and how homeschooling is different.
    Public school vs homeschool:
    1.Flexibility
    2. Individualized Education
    3. School happens outside the four walls
    4. Food
    5. Standardized Testing
*Disclaimer* I LOVE TEACHERS!!! ALL TEACHERS!!!
This is purely a difference between the two types of schooling options.

And also when you're being homescholed, you get to use the bathroom without having to hear teachers saying "No"

A major benefit of homeschooling are the social aspects: no bullying, fights, teasing, gossiping, racial issues, snobbery, cliques, shunning, ostracism, peer pressure.

It's nice to find a video that says exactly what you're thinking. I homeschool and I'm so proud of the way it has allowed my children to go at their own pace. They are more because we can give them more at home. Thanks for the video!

Ohhhh, standardized testing. I was a public elementary teacher, and for 12 years I had to prepare students for standardized testing. I always knew I'd homeschool, and we're starting this fall when my daughter is 5. So glad I found your videos because I'm beginning to get myself organized!!

I moved to florida in the middle of the year when i was in 7th grade and the school systems were so bad here my mom pulled me and my two siblings out of schooled and decided to homeschool us (unschool us), and it was the best decision she ever made. I went back to high school my senior year so I could go to prom and graduation and it was terrible. I didn't learn anything that last year of high school and They made me take 10 standardized test (4 in a week one time) just to make me prove I was actually supposed to be in the grade I was in. Homeschooling all the way🎉🎉🎉🎉
    P.S. Gott Love sent me💕

We can’t pull ours out in Texas either. The HSLDA has all the info you need. You go to your kids school and tell them you need the paperwork to withdraw your student because you are going to put them in education. Fill it out and take it back to the school. Then keep your kid home. The paperwork here was only two pages. Usually there are requirements about what subject you need to teach them. Some states require you save their completed work to turn in to someone. We don’t have that in Texas. We have 5 subjects we are required to teach. Some states insist your kids take state tests HSLDA will have a link to your states requirements. You can start off with something easy like Time4Learning or Monarch online. That will give you a base to understand what will work for your kid. Pick curriculum they will enjoy. There is a lot of online highly animated programs.

THIS IS WHY I WANT TO BE HOME SCHOOLED!! I am always in the middle of class "You have 60 minutes to complete this test." I finish it in 10 minutes XD and its so annoying of the 7 hours I am at school I am spending 2-3 hours waiting for others to finish by just sitting there or having busy work! I will do anything to be home schooled and not have to wake up at 5:30 for the bus to come at 6:20! I want to work at my own pace because I work faster than others and still do well! I know some online home school programs allow people to graduate early! That is what I want to do! I have done everything to convince my parents but they just won't budge!!

You can enroll in community college classes at 16.
The pace of traditional school does not fit all, they go with the average and teach to that group.
For my girl they go too fast in math and not fast enough in reading.
I'll say a prayer that you can find a solution that fits you better. It is a big sacrifice for parents, or they are scared they can't do it, thats why it took me untill she was 9.

My husband is a walking breathing history book. His recall and knowledge is impressive. He’d put any college history teacher to shame at times. My 9 year old LOVES getting on FaceTime or phone and interrogating Daddy about history while he’s driving during the week. Lately she’s into pirates and explorers. She doesn’t miss school. We don’t really call homeschool school. I just tell her hey I need you to do this list sometime today. She usually chooses evenings out on the porch lately. It’s really nice

Well I heard that there are clubs and meetings and activities with other ppl, so you do socialize with others. plus extracurricular sports and programs will help fill that space. Not to mention Jesus will also fill your void. =)Then again maybe I isn't for everyone, I never used to be a homeschooler but the direction of this world is changing my mind.

I’m a 6th grader and I’m being pulled out of my school soon to be homeschooled (we are just waiting bc we have to save up for a computer) and these (reasons in the video) are why we are doing so plus some problems with people there. I am a very excelled student and find myself bored often while in class. Often I have to pretend I’m still working while taking a test bc if I go and hand it in to the teacher when I actually finish they will think I just guessed or copied bc I finished too soon. My school does not provide me with all the tools I need to expand my learning instead of just being bored. I am a straight A student and I have never got a grade lower than an A-. My gpa is an exact 4.0 (it shows us on our report card) and I’m in special honors. When I am homeschooled I will be able to be challenged where I am actually learning, I can eat real wholesome food, I can be able to shape myself into the person I want to be without being pressured to be “perfect” by society, and I don’t have to do the stupid standardized tests. That’s why my family is going pro homeschool and why others should too.

Hi Heather! I just heard about your channel from a Sean Cannell training! Such good points in this video, especially about the "individualized" advantage and the avoidance of the sugar-feast that is public school. I'm a former high school Spanish teacher who just started my own YT channel teaching beginning Spanish courses because I believe the trend toward homeschool/online school is only going to grow for all the reasons you mentioned and more. Bravo to you and other moms who are investing in their kids like this! :)

First off, I'm sorry this might be long. I started homeschooling for two reasons. First off, I contracted a private chef when my daughter was 6 and now she's almost eight. He trains her in the culinary arts and is not a chef for my home. Well things got complicated with his schedule and ours with his work and her school plus my availability. That started my thinking about homeschooling. Then there was the matter of the school curriculum. My daughter took to reading much too poorly at first but took well to math and science. I also disagree with the narrow and one-sided view of social studies and history. Plus I wanted other things in her curriculum that aren't traditionally taught in public or private school. I hired two teachers to go along with her chef, and she has improved tremendously. In the mornings she gets the majority of her classroom time like you do from 9 til about noon. Reading, writing, math, science, social studies including bible study. In the afternoon she gets the extra curriculum that I specifically want her to learn early. Agriculture and home economics (which I teach for now) as she learns in our home garden that is very large. Planting, transplanting, germination, maintenance, and so on. On the home Ec side we do harvesting, canning, crafts and more things useful to the home. All of the afternoon portion can be done as long as there is daylight. She also gets her 2 hours of culinary training after noon, but before 5. Outside of the classroom time and culinary training, most of her education revolves around how we live day to day. I teach her other things like arts at my leisure. Right now I teach her how to play the guitar her mother got her for Christmas. When her mother has her for the weekends, she works with her more on craft arts and expression arts. I forgot I always work with her on formal dance. Its just so common to us now that its not learning anymore its just dancing with daddy. So far its been a really great thing for my daughter and I. She has about 3-4 hours of regular schooling a day and the rest is really just life for us. As she gets older of course the material will change and a lot has already because as you stated, when she catches onto something we give her more of it.

Great video done with personality and vivacious spirit! My main concern that was not addressed in this video is the social aspect of kids working with, collaborating and discovering with other kids their age that are not of family. Much discretionary learning is gained by these types of experiences that are not available in most home schooling situations,

    • @HeatherTorresTV
      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Great thought. Thank you for your comment. This is definitely a concern and for our family, we make it a part of our "homeschool" to learn with other families too. This means doing group projects, presentations, and different activities. I completely agree that there is value and beauty in working with others and this is something that needs to be taught also in the homeschool.

This was a wonderful video! I actually was banned by my own cousin on fb because I stated these very same points, and she couldn't handle it. Another factor that many adults unfamiliar with is that many homeschool resources are available free online if you allow time to search for them. Joining homeschool groups is another way to share or borrow textbooks which also reduces costs. I have been researching lately that many homeschooling children are outperforming public school students as well.

Congrats on taking the leap into homeschooling. Two great resources for you to consider: The book-- Everything your 1st grader needs to know. This was a great resource for making sure we were hitting the "standards". The SEO d resource: Google your state name and 1st grade standards. This will give you an idea of what 1st graders learn in public school. Just remember, the beauty of homeschool is you get to go at your kiddos pace. It's takes a few months but just remember, you can do this!!!"

I love the point about time management! I was an ECE instructor and it takes more than 10-15 minutes to get 11 two-year-olds outside in a neat and orderly fashion (IF nobody needs a surprise potty/diaper).... If you have 1 or 2 at home, it takes like 3.

Heather: You sound very vivacious in this video.
I can tell you this: a public school education is a one-size-fits-all education.
I went to public school back in the mid 1960's, but I only got as far as fourth grade. And the classes were very large as well. I had emotional problems. I was always crying and carrying on in class and yelling at the teachers. I couldn't take the pressure of a big class. Because there no special education programs in the public schools back in the 60's, I had to go to special education school instead. And believe me, I was better off there. The classes were much smaller, and the teachers give you individualized attention. I eventually calmed down and I treated the teachers with dignity and respect. Had I still stayed on in public school after fourth grade, I wouldn't have made it.
I can see why you chose to homeschool your kids. Public school teachers simply don't have the time to deal with special needs students; as well as give them individualized attention! They have to follow a strict schedule and teach their subjects within a certain amount of time. The public schools are really being run by both the state and Federal governments. These schools have to perform up to state and Federal laws and standards; especially the Federal No Child Left Behind law.
There is also way too much violence in the public schools today as well. Just three weeks ago, there was a 15-year-old pregnant girl who got beaten up by some other kids at the district high school. And of course, there's the infamous Columbine, Sandy Hook, and Parkland school shootings. And you also hear about teachers having sex with their students.
You talk about taking family vacations during the school year; many schools don't allow this. And they consider these family vacations as unexcused absences. Four years ago, there was a guy here in suburban Philadelphia who took his two kids out of school because he was running in the Boston Marathon. He then got a letter from the school's principal saying that this was unexcused absence! He defended his actions by saying that his two kids learned more in the five days they were there instead of sitting inside of a classroom. But these schools very strict attendance policies and they must be followed and enforced! Depending on their attendance, the parents could be charged with truancy. And they can also have legal action taken against them as well.
I have heard that homeschooling is legal in all 50 states. Did you ever check with your state's Department of Education and local school district just to find out what their homeschooling laws and policies are before you decided to homeschool your kids? I don't want you to get in trouble with the law.
Take care and good luck to you Heather.

Great video! Kudos to you for educating people on the effectiveness of homeschooling! One point I thought could've been touched on about public school: It's not the job of the government to be paying for our kids education. That should be the responsibility of the parents and anyone else who wants to help (grandparents, family, community, etc) versus the government taking hard-earned money from the citizens of the United States to pay for the public education system.

    • @HeatherTorresTV
      @HeatherTorresTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Oh great point Holly! Yes I agree. If more parents were aware of the different options available for their kiddos we could cut the major gov't cost of education in our country. When I did research on how the education system even came to be in the US it wasn't even created by people in EDUCATION. It was business owners that wanted workers. Very interesting.

Great video with some solid points. My big problem is parents that send their children to private or public schools 6 hours a day and think they are completely off the hook from having to teach their child anything on their own. When did parenting only become making sure the child is clothed, washed, and fed? Even if parents are not able to homeschool their child, this does not mean you are not able to sit and go over their homework with them, discuss what was covered in class, review anything that was not understood, discuss any positive or negative things that took place at school, etc. It takes a village to raise a child.

    My experience with public school...
    Elementary School:
bullied every day, forced to take ADHD pills every day by my school, put into “special ed”, excluded from other kids, abused by teachers, processed pizza in a box for lunch... scolded for my interest in poetry and not “allowed” to do interesting math, only what they tell me to do. Some of the friends that I did have in special ed died from physical ailments.... my 4th grade teacher went to jail for child abuse and child pornography... my special ed teacher used the word “sex” to put the retarded kids “in line”, because they would get upset and that was our punishment for doing bad lol... also smacking our desks and calling us retards... one special ed boy would show me his penis in class... we all would eat Cheetos whenever we wanted.
    Middle School:
Removed from new friends and put once again into special ed.
Bullied harder, food thrown at me... beaten up on my school bus.. learned about sex too early (13) and not learning about why sex is wrong when your not ready... learned to drink beer and smoke cigarettes... school dances getting by breasts grabbed and many massive gum wads in my scalp by other girls... boys from school trying to touch my chest when we weren’t at school then calling me a liar and a loser at school.....
    High school:
Still in special ed, meeting the bad kids...Beaten up harder from boys that were then bigger... spending Saturdays at school picking up trash... learning how to steal from the cafeteria so that I can share with my new friends... my friends doing cocaine in the girls bathroom.. finding heroine needles in the bathroom (knowing that those might be from my friends or at least someone I knew since childhood), smoking cigarettes constantly, ditching class with friends, getting moved to a “continuation school” where I didn’t have to do anything, for PE my gym teacher/math teacher/ science teacher walked us... to Jack in the Box... 1 block away from campus... Graduated 1 Year late from being held back.
    Forward to today:
One best friend from high school, in and out of jail for doing and selling crack and heroine, died in jail
One not so best friend from elementary school is homeless on crack
One not so best friend from elementary school is a stripper and prostitute with the largest breast surgery I have ever seen in my life, the largest lip surgery in my life, and largest ass surgery... I have ever seen... in my life..... she hated me and cut bald spots in my hair once :(
I have only 3 friends in my whole life that came from school... one cuts hair and is very good, and one is a yoga instructor and another makes parody musicals... non of which used their school educations to succeed in their field. Good job public school, at taking away almost 20 years of my life...
I wish I would have been homeschooled ...
My brother took my same path.... he is now a homosexual and is highly addicted to dabbing and has melted his brain and is on unemployment. F*ck the system... teach yourself kids from home. Administrators don’t deserve to play chess with your kids and they DON’T deserve your tax money. The teachers make nothing and the administration is wealthy AF.

I'm planning on becoming a team gymnast and if I get advanced enough "I hope" I will probably have to do homeschooling and Ima be honest I WANT TO BE A HOMESCHOOLER I want it so bad the people in public schools are so rude and mean. They make fun of things about you that you can't change and homeschooling would be a miracle for me. If I became a HOMESCHOOLER it would most likely take two to three hours to de school because there would be no interruptions and it would be ten times easier to be a straight A student I did it and I'm still doing it but it is so hard. So I will definitely try to be a super advanced gymnast just for that homeschool

You will do great! Just make sure to take care of yourself too because you need to stay calm and motivated :) Try to find a homeschool co-op group if you can too.. they are wonderful.

Hi Karen! I completely understand the fear. What's great about the curriculum out in the homeschool world is that it walks you through exactly what they will learn. Each lesson is broken down. It tells you what you can say to guide them and what the childs responses should be. So no need to worry about not knowing what to teach him! :) I feel like I'm learning all over again because I don't remember learning 1/2 the things I'm teaching my kiddos!
