1. Simple really is better. The philosophy that “more is better” is not optimal. Break down ideas into their absolute fundamental parts. 2. Over-trusting the experts. Trust yourself, look at your child, and create a homeschool specifically for your own child. You are the expert on your child. 3. Got too involved, helped too much with the learning. As the kids got older, I was still too engaged. Transition kids slowly to the idea of independent learning. Become comfortable in the messiness of learning independence. 4. Not keeping consistent journals. 5. Worrying too much about the kids “turning out okay.” Learn to let go, and trust. This will give you peace. Hope this blesses somebody!

I used to work as a tutor, and what you are talking about around 4 mins in is called "learned helplessness". Its basically where students second guess themselves and don't trust their own thought process and thinking. It is very easily remedied by asking questions about their process rather than showing/teaching them how to do it, and encouraging them to explain how they came to a specific answer (primarily with math and sciences, and even with correct answers). I don't think I had a single student that I had tutored that didn't struggle with this mindset, so I love that you are addressing it. Having this type of confidence and independence is such an important skill for kids to develop.
Absolutely I had this issue as a kid too. It’s hard to break out of that and gain confidence however it can and will be done. The lord helps restore all confidence

Uh no. People have been honest throughout the ages, that's not special just to our time. The issue is the majority of people are not honest now because they are trying to help, they are honest because they don't fear any consequences as they feel they are in like company. I'm not talking about her. Some people are very honest, some are not, some are honest because they are looking for sympathy or have some other motivation. It is good to be honest and it can also be very scary depending on what you are being honest about. Not talking about this woman.
I think the most difficult judgement a homeschool parent has to learn is to make judgements that are not parental but come from an educational point of view. Sometimes, there is, for example, good reason to worry. If their skills are not up to snuff. The main response then is to do something about it. Worry, yes, does not solve anything but don't discount it. It is an early warning sign of a need.
It's a fallacy that parents, coaches and educators are not one in the same. We've allowed for these titles/responsibilities to be stripped from us parent by people who directly benefit from parents loosing credibility and our children's trust. You can't Google experience. Generetional wealth comes in many forms however book smart is not one of them. Sometimes you just have sit back and watch while they try to eat a soup with a fork.
These are great tips. I use an online school and I don't go for over 2hrs. My son is 5 now and it works for us. People in my family thought I was being too hard letting him do stuff himself but now he builds all kinds of wonderful things by himself and he tells me when things are wrong. I feel confident by the time we reach the older years he can and will choose his own path and accomplish whatever he wants to.

I have so many of the same regrets! Particularly allowing my older kids to take the reins more. As they graduated, it was a bit of a rough transition for them to suddenly not have me hovering anymore!

I don't have the benefit of being a hoarder because I don't have the funds for all things new and exciting. I didn't change curriculum much so I remember what we did. However, taking lots and lots of photos helped me. Our kids keep primary journals, which is a wonderful keepsake. Thank you for your transparency. My oldest is in 7th grade, and we've always homeschooled. This experience coming after 12 years of teaching in private and public schools. That has helped me not question my homeschooling choices. (I knew what was on the other side).

On the journaling…if that seems too much to add to an already full plate, a short cut that is not as good , but may still provide a lot of information on any given year is to make a yearly list from your calendar or planner. Before I threw away my wall calendar full of the past year’s events, camps, classes, church programs, sports events, vacations etc, I would make a list from that calendar of all we did that year or milestone that took place. So on one page, I had a quick view into what we did that year and I put that one page into a plastic sheet protector and store in a notebook. ( of course digitally would be less clutter :) It’s amazing to look back on and recall all that transpired and all the memories. Just another idea if the journaling doesn’t work out ;)
I used to worry about how to educate best, until one year a scholarly type gave me three books to read. Each one was secular. Each written by a prominent educator. And EACH had different 'facts', styles, priorities and opinions. Reading those books was the best thing that happened to me, because if those professional educators couldn't get it 'right', then I could be free from all the regular, lower-level, educating nay-sayers.

I agree with so much that you have said. I have to say my experience doesn’t confirm “it is always easier to teach something sooner rather than later.” My advice is actually not to sweat the gaps, because they will come. Gaps are inevitable and happen in regular school as well. I am finding it is quite easy to push pause and fill in gaps that have come up. In fact I feel like there is some kind of home school magic - maybe it is because we are so focused on the paths of just a few kids, maybe it is divine intervention- but we seem to take on subjects at just the right time, even when I had been wanting to start much earlier. Home school planning is like editing a story. Sometimes we get in the midst of it and realize that we need to tweak somethings, but if we end up with a cohesive story at the end of the year, I declare success. :)
I love what you said about "push pause and fill in the gaps when they come." I have found that to be true again and again as well. It's not a "missed chance" thing. It's more about "second chance."
I am very experienced..teacher. the big lesson ...you gotta kinda hunt in packs. It's kinda like Huskies. Some pull amazingly hard. That's what homeschooling might miss. The comparisons give the learner depth. Good luck.
The Robinson curriculum method would help with a lot of these regrets- it's a self -teaching method , and boils it all down to reading, writing and math. ... Another way to solve the worry problem, is to submit to the husband/father as the decision -maker in the homeschool... God meant submission to be a blessing and lift burdens off our shoulders! !

What would have been the biggest benefits of putting that together? What are the biggest pain points of not having one?

Dont worry about the past. You did accomplish a lot. Look at your kids! Are they thriving? Are they inquisitive? Are they kind? Suppose you had a fire or something you would have lost your journal would that take away from what you did together? Nope. But if it means a lot start now. ;) God bless!

Great video. I am diving into home schooling. And my gut is saying I'm making the right decision. My child has anxiety with being back since schools were closed with the pandemic. Returning to school this 2021 has left us both filled with high anxiety. I am in Chicago and the public school system is a mess. They are not following social distance practices. The schools are also dirty and they don't even let the children use the cleaning supplies that we parents have purchased for the children to have in school. My child is in 6th grade this year. She refuses to use the schools restrooms all day. She says she doesn't feel comfortable at school and is afraid of getting covid 19 bc its so crowded. Praying for guidance and I know my child will have a way more positive experience with home school. She is in a gifted program at CPS. Scores high across the board on every subject, even when we had to go remote last year. Im sure she will do great at home school. Again thank you for this video. It truly set my anxious mind at ease 😌
I am new to homeschooling and plan to start next year- a little late to the game. We’ll be pulling ours out of public grade school this summer. We’re in California, and 2 question id love to get answers on are: When I file a PSA or PSP (can’t remember what it’s called) do I have to make up a name for my private home school? And can we use a charter school but choose our own curriculum or do they have only approved books and supplies that you can purchase? Thank you for any input!! Hugs 🤗
It really depends on the state you live in. Some states require each of the things you listed, others don't. I recommend 2 things: 1. Google your state name and "homeschool laws" and you should get a quick answer. 2. Join a homeschool FB group that is specific to your area and ask in there. Often those moms are the best resource to tell you what's required AND to tell you what people will say you have to do vs what you actually have to do.
Keeping this in mind might help. On the TV news channels when it's time for the weather report you will always hear someone say and now the weather from our expert meteorologist. And the meteorologist says the weather today will be this or it will be that and how many times have you said to yourself they sure get the weather report wrong a lot. Well if they get the weather wrong a lot just exactly how expert are they. The truth is people may be very knowledgeable about certain things but nobody is an expert.
Wow!! I really wanna homeschooled my kids.. but know how to do it.. just like you said bout experts... Maybe I could take some advise from experts.. and sometimes I must trust myself too... What age is it best to start kids in homeschooling? Is it age 5 or 6 or 7year old to start?
In terms of starting formal work: whenever your child is ready. My eldest was eager and able to sit still for half an hour a day learning to read and do arithmetic at four-and-a-half. Whereas one of her younger siblings has developmental disabilities and we only started using workbooks et cetera when she was 7.

True..I understand fractions now as an adult through cooking and homeschooling my own children than I did from like, 3rd grade on!

I’m new and trying to build a homeschool that works for me and my kids. I have an 8yo, 4yo, 2yo, and a 1yo, and I’m pregnant.
When you're making it simpler, exactly what were some of the choices you used to do that. What books, what resources?

Great video. I am diving into home schooling. And my gut is saying I'm making the right decision. My child has anxiety with being back since schools were closed with the pandemic. Returning to school this 2021 has left us both filled with high anxiety. I am in Chicago and the public school system is a mess. They are not following social distance practices. The schools are also dirty and they don't even let the children use the cleaning supplies that we parents have purchased for the children to have in school. My child is in 6th grade this year. She refuses to use the schools restrooms all day. She says she doesn't feel comfortable at school and is afraid of getting covid 19 bc its so crowded. Praying for guidance and I know my child will have a way more positive experience with home school. She is in a gifted program at CPS. Scores high across the board on every subject, even when we had to go remote last year. Im sure she will do great at home school. Again thank you for this video. It truly set my anxious mind at ease 😌

I am new to homeschooling and plan to start next year- a little late to the game. We’ll be pulling ours out of public grade school this summer. We’re in California, and 2 question id love to get answers on are:
When I file a PSA or PSP (can’t remember what it’s called) do I have to make up a name for my private home school?
And can we use a charter school but choose our own curriculum or do they have only approved books and supplies that you can purchase?

It really depends on the state you live in. Some states require each of the things you listed, others don't. I recommend 2 things:
1. Google your state name and "homeschool laws" and you should get a quick answer.
2. Join a homeschool FB group that is specific to your area and ask in there. Often those moms are the best resource to tell you what's required AND to tell you what people will say you have to do vs what you actually have to do.

Keeping this in mind might help. On the TV news channels when it's time for the weather report you will always hear someone say and now the weather from our expert meteorologist. And the meteorologist says the weather today will be this or it will be that and how many times have you said to yourself they sure get the weather report wrong a lot. Well if they get the weather wrong a lot just exactly how expert are they. The truth is people may be very knowledgeable about certain things but nobody is an expert.
Wow!! I really wanna homeschooled my kids.. but know how to do it.. just like you said bout experts... Maybe I could take some advise from experts.. and sometimes I must trust myself too... What age is it best to start kids in homeschooling? Is it age 5 or 6 or 7year old to start?
In terms of starting formal work: whenever your child is ready. My eldest was eager and able to sit still for half an hour a day learning to read and do arithmetic at four-and-a-half. Whereas one of her younger siblings has developmental disabilities and we only started using workbooks et cetera when she was 7.
