- On this day, 20 years ago, our Honorary Conductor, the great musician Günter Wand passed away. As a tribute to the maestro and in his honor, we have republished the concert recording of the then NDR Symphony Orchestra with Bruckner's Symphony No. 9 at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival 2001.

I am a Japanese Brucknerian
I just watched this performance for the third or fourth time and realized that he died the following February 14, 2002. For those of us now, I think Gunter Wand's performances of Bruckner with this orchestra, and those of Berlin and the set with the Kolner Rundfunk Orchester, represent the standard against which other performances, either of individual symphonies or the entire set, can be measured. There are not "vintage" recordings. They are very much alive. We can be thankful for living in a time when audio-visual technology has reached a high level. Thanks to your technical team and to NDR for releasing these great performances of Bruckner!

I saw Gunter Wand conduct this at the Proms in 2001. It was the most profound musical experience I've ever had. Thank you Maestro!

Wunderschöne und majestätische Aufführung dieses Schwanengesangs von Bruckner mit seidigen Tönen aller Streicher, milden Tönen aller Holzbläser und vor allem brillanten Tönen aller Blechbläser. Der dritte (vielleicht nicht der letzte) Satz klingt besonders schön und echt tiefempfunden. Der erfhahrene und unvergleichliche Dirigent leitet das ausgezeichnete Orchester im gut betrachteten Tempo und mit perfekt kontrollierter Dynamik, als wäre es ein Teil seines Körpers. Wunderbar vom Anfang bis zum Ende!

Amazing when maestro Gunter Wand is upset by the violins (minute 43) and cast dark eyes to the string desk. And again furious at the end of the third movement which is not perfectly executed in this version. This is the benefit of the video : showing the fight between the chief interpreter and the orchestra, which is terribly difficult to manage and balance in a Bruckner symphony.

Ich lebte von 1988 bis 2004 in Hamburg und hatte das Glück, Günter Wand mit dem Orchester regelmäßig zu erleben. Bruckner war unter diesen Bedingungen immer etwas Besonderes. Schade, dass Wand nie die 1. oder 2. Sinfonie aufführte.

Excellente référence Gunther Wand nous transporte dans l'infini, quelle musicalité ! c'est une des expressions spirituelle brucknérien. A choisir entre les Interpretations de Sergiù Célibidache , Leonard Berstein ou Herbert von Karajan, celà devient vraiment monumental. A écouter avec les trois chefs d'orchestre , à écouter attentivement, au calme, avec sous la main une analyse détaillée des mouvements.

Ja, tatsächlich! Das ist der Große Saal der Musik- und Kongresshalle in Lübeck, auch liebevoll MuK genannt. Aus München hingegen eine etwas länger Anreise ... ;)
Ich finde es besonders faszinierend, wie Wand in den langen Streicher-Passagen des Adagios trotz des riesigen Orchester-Apparates eine geradezu kammermusikalische Intimität, Luzidität und Transparenz des Klangs herstellt. Das sind Klänge von zerbrechlicher Zartheit und fast überirdischer Schwerelosigkeit.

Conducting Bruckner 9th doesn't get any better than that. The only regret is a weak timpani player. Give him twice larger mallet with hard felt wrapping glued to the head I think the performance would have been twice better.

I love many Bruckner conductors: Furtwängler, Celibidache, Knappertsbusch, Tintner, and I can listen to them play every symphony except for the 9th.
For me the 9th IS WAND.

Mastro 귄터 반트 상임일때 NDR은 최고의 전성기를 구가!! 지금 앨런길버트의 NDR은 거기에 훨씬 못미침.... 희안하다. 오케스트라 각개인 단원들의 연주 역량은 그때보다 더 향상 되었는데 왜 지휘자 들의 역략은 그때보다 못할까??
