I saw Günter Wand conducting this symphony with the BBC SO at the London Proms sometime in the 1990s. He had to conduct sitting down but it was so wonderful I just wanted it to go on forever. RIP Maestro Wand. You might have been grumpy, bad tempered, rude and prone to cancel at the last minute but with the possible exception of Eugen Jochum you were the greatest conductor of Bruckner's music who ever lived.

What a magnificent performance of this wonderful symphony! The continuity is comprehensive. I love the way the woodwind tone qualities perfectly compliment each instrument and excel in both solo and tutti passages. The clarity of articulation, balance, blend and intonation in the brass could not possibly be better. The string sound in the second movement just after the pizzicato passage finishes is absolutely soul stirring.

Superb performance. Very good playing throughout. Can't be much better! This is especially demanding for the brass, who must have strength left for the final chorale section. Fantastic solo hornist, razorsharp woodwinds, rich, warm and precise strings. And of course magnificently conducted by maestro Wand, who manages to keep up the energy throughout the long sections, always well balaced and with feeling for the whole structure. With that said, this is for me the least enjoyable of Bruckner's symphonies. It's a real patchwork of themes and sections with no real organic flow. It stops and starts all the time. Even in the scherzo he works with two different tempos, that disturbs the flow of the music. Of course all is masterly planned and held together, but lacking those really beautiful, gripping or memorable melodies, that Bruckner otherwise has in all his symphonies. This is so intellectual, so serious, so technically focused, that he forgets the humour, the warm feeling, the organic flow. I feel that it is more a summary of all his contrapuntal and orchestrational skills than really good music. A "masterwork" made as his own exam, to himself and to God, in competition with Bach, Beethoven and perhaps Wagner. After that he could relax, and made his four real masterpieces, symphonies no 6, 7, 8 and 9.
I agree with you about the patchwork nature of the first three movements, but I think the Fifth's Finale contains "the humor, the warm feeling, the organic flow" that you admire in Bruckner's music. It is a real crowd-pleaser. For me, the follow-on Sixth Symphony has the opposite problem: The stunning first two movements and a mysterious dream-like Scherzo, but ultimately a disappointing Finale marred by too many herky-jerky stops and starts, as well as the completely non-organic tacking on of the first movement's first theme to conclude the symphony. But yes, Anton got everything right in his fully mature 7th, 8th and 9th Symphonies, and his youthful 4th Symphony holds together well as a complete statement. It is an inspiration to me that over the past fifty years, Bruckner went from an unrecognized status to being fully integrated into the performing symphonic repertoire. He's obviously a big hit with the North Germans.
@@annakimborahpa Oh! I had almost forgot that I wrote this, and wondered what you had responded to. And I can agree that the finale in no 5 has more flow than the rest. And also think that the finale of no 6 is weaker than the rest of the symphony. That's a pity. But I think it was David Hurwitz who actually liked the finale of 6 and could explain its qualities, so now I can look at it more positively than before.
@@larsjohansson7954 The Finale of the 6th is still mature Bruckner which says a lot, but he perfected the juxtaposing of themes and tempos in the abbreviated Finale of the Seventh. I consider the 7th as a whole to be the best Bruckner symphony and the three movements of the 9th the best incomplete Bruckner symphony. Gunter Wand considered Bruckner to be the most important symphony composer after Beethoven. For me, Bruckner's experimentation, particularly in form, opened the door for later innovators of the symphony like Mahler, Sibelius, Nielsen, Vaughan Williams and Shostakovich.
@@annakimborahpa Agree totally. But no 8 is still a masterpiece and more monumental than the 7th. Yes, it took time for Bruckner's music to be appreciated widely, but today he has gained status as one of the greatest symphonists. I also like both no 1 and 0 very much. They are ligher and shorter, but well wtitten and proportioned. I prefer them before 2, 3 and 5, which I find the most problematic among Bruckner.
New objectivity, clear, natural and overwhelming Bruckner's Symphony No.5. The polyphonic movements of each instrument are presented crisply, clearly, and sometimes with great force. These sounds of the north in summer are profound, strong and clear. Each instrument is organized and can be heard clearly. The counterpoint melody can be heard clearly and feels powerful at the fourth movement double fugue. After a flowing part, the climax is looked like a modern impressive huge temple that stands tall and strong with good visibility.
It is our highly revered former chief conductor Günter Wand. In particular his Bruckner interpretations were groundbreaking. If you would like to know more, please visit our Website (in german): www.ndr.de/orchester_chor/Der-Mann-mit-der-Alterskarriere,guenterwand106.html

I prefer them before 2, 3 and 5, which I find the most problematic among Bruckner.
great verk
Rainer Seegers des Berliner Philharmonischen Orchesters spielt Pauken!
Und Wenzel Fuchs von den Berlinern die Solo-Klarinette... ;-)

Success in Bruckner is all about paying strict attention to his tempo markings

Who is the conductor ?
It is our highly revered former chief conductor Günter Wand. In particular his Bruckner interpretations were groundbreaking. If you would like to know more, please visit our Website (in german): www.ndr.de/orchester_chor/Der-Mann-mit-der-Alterskarriere,guenterwand106.html
Where's his score? Oct. 31, 2022
To add: the various brass sections (inc horns) are incredibly melodic, harmonic and silky. Nov. 27, 2022
Weergaloos!
Bedankt!!

sadly, like USA, few if any young people in the crowd...
Yes, that's true. It changed a bit since the time the video was recorded, but not entirely.
Der Timpanist Spielt Heute in Berlin Fihlarmonie.wie ist sein Name?
Rainer Seegers.
