    LOL Every time somebody from the UK steps in a roadster they have to mention "hair dresser's car." Stop. Just stop. It' s an "old saying." Roadsters/spyders, over powered or under powered, do not belong to an occupation, ...and it's just strange. I've even seen folks from the UK review their own roadsters and mention "hair dresser's car" as a sort of apology-- like it's the elephant in the room or something that they have to mention but also defy . Get the car you love and drive it. The BMW Z series-- all of them are pretty nice cars regardless of what you do for a living.

      Not sure if this is a joke comment or not but in the UK, "Hairdressers car" means it's for dudes who are attracted to other dudes. The z4 is by no means a hairdresser's car. The SLK, ...yea. Cheers!

    I own a 2016 sapphire-black metallic 28i M-Sport with red leather interior and I must admit: it is the best thing that ever happened to me. I am really convinced now that I will NEVER, EVER sell this one. I have driven the cayman, and even an Aston Martin (Vantage), but the interior of the Z4 is soooo much more appealing than the clinical Aston or the sparse Porsche. Don't get me wrong, I love Porsches, but this generation of Z4 is really in a league of its own. It might not be the best handling car ever, or even the sportiest, but for me the magnificent combination of the sportiness, the wonderful seats, the gorgeous interior, the performance, even as a GT, and especially the low, sexy looks of the car make this Z4 a very, very appealing all-day driver that gives you almost EVERYTHING. I really think this is a pure classic in the making and i am thinking hard about also buying another 35i or 35iS, because theu have the great 6-cilinder engines that are very smooth. But I need it to be in black with red leather also or at least in gorgeous red with black leather, low miles and M-Sport.

      I'm about to buy my first e89 30i manual. I test drove the 35iS its fun but ultimately I'm a naturally aspirated kinda guy. Less thing to go wrong... and honestly, I miss roll up windows like on older cars. Combustion engines and manual cars just had more soul or character.

    I own the 35i and it is incredible! Very smooth trans as it blasts up to 90 w/o even trying. Well done video and I believe the e89, with its stylish lines, low/wide profile, and overall good looks inside/out is on its way to becoming a classic.

    Someone here mentioned timing chain - from an actual owner who tried all the E89 models (literally), I’d say with exception of the 35is, which is a beast, this is actually the better engine and the 28i the model to go for.
    The timing chain is a bit of a ghost. There were a few cars affected in 2012 but most had their timing chains upgraded by BMW for free at the time.
    I’ve got my 28i for 4 years and still has its original timing chain and no issues at all.
    I’m also member of several e89 groups and I’ve not come across anyone who had timing chain issues - People talk about it but usually those who don’t own one and I’ve not met an owner who actually had an issue.
    Great reliable engine and pulls like crazy (the 28i has quite a good mapping, 20i and 18i are a bit sluggish). Yes, the 6 cylinder sound better but that’s really about it.
    I’ve really not had any issues with it.

    • @azmike3572
      @azmike3572 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had the improved timing chain kit installed at 60K miles in my '15 28i 4-cylinder, thus preemptively eliminating that issue. My only concern is the plastic parts and our Arizona (USA) highs in the summer...115°F/46°C. Thinking of heat-shielding those parts.

    • @rjwassenaar7511
      @rjwassenaar7511 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Cornel, I might sound stupid, but I really have no idea what a timing chain is. Can you please explain?? I own a 2016 28i myself, so I am very curious. By the way, I LOVE that car and it is sooo great.

    • @azmike3572
      @azmike3572 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rjwassenaar7511 It's a vertical chain running on two toothed gears that control the opening and closing of the valves, usually on top, driven from the motor on the bottom. Z4s had a design fault on their 4-cylinder turbo engine , allowing the chain to get so loose it would skip a tooth and later break, causing the valves to stay in the position when the chain broke, only to be hit and bent by the pistons on their upward travel in the few seconds before the engine would quit, causing thousands in repairs. BMW corrected this sometime in 2015, if I'm correct.

      I've owned the 28i, and I think the only issue I've come across is the height adjusting headlamps would randomly point down and stay there, reducing night time visibility.
      The engine is a marvel, great sound and very muscular.

    Nice video. Have a z4 e89 2.0 and tuned it to 266hp 450nm for less than EUR500; now has even more burbles and turbo woosh sound. super fun acceleration 0-100km in the low 5's because of the power boost and lower weight of the 4 cyl engine vs the 6. dropped the car by 1.0 cm in the back and 1.5 cm in the front with eibach springs. almost handles like the boxster for EUR500 including labor to install; still have the run flats on the 18 in rims but actually prefer the nokian winter tyres for half the year. would probably handle just like the boxster in the summer with pilot sports instead of the run flats. brakes are another story - would have to upgrade to brembos to meet boxster brake performance. ex-brake upgrade, i consider it a grand tourer in normal mode and boxster-like in sport mode for nearly half the price!

    The E89 came out in 2009 not 2010. They are fantastic cars but I would always have the 6 cylinder over the 4 pot. BMW were forced to discontinue the NA 6 pot and put this 4 pot in solely to meet emission regulations in around 2011 / 2012, sure the marketing blurb says more economical but in reality there isn't anything in it. This car in the video is showing 21mpg and I get 24MPG for town driving in my 30i and around 44+ MPG on a long run! The 6 pot sounds way better and is a more refined drive. The 6 pot NA will hold its value better than the 4 pot too. But if you were to get the 2.0 then you may as well get the 20i and remap it to around the same power level as the 28i and save some cash.

      I drive a 2009 sdrive 30i as well, which I bought ten years ago. The naturally aspirated 6 cylinder is a joy every day, and as you wrote, actual fuel economy on the road is not worse than with the 4 cylinders which replaced the 6 cylinders. I will keep it as long as I can drive, and all 3 of my sons want to drive the car when I'm gone.

      Sound deadening with the top up is quite good in my opinion; not 100% coupe but close. Personally I've driven my Z4 for hours on the highway (with the top up because top down at speed for hours is a bit tiresome) and stepped out as fresh as I got in. Listening to music or talking to your passenger is no problem. You don't need to crank up the volume or start shouting. That said, it remains a sportscar. You can't compare it with a luxury high end cruiser (like a 7 series for example).
