BMW Z4 (E89) Review | The German MX-5?
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 29 มิ.ย. 2024
- This week on Buckle Up, Rob reviews the second generation BMW Z4. The only generation to receive a folding hard top the Z4 grew considerably in size compared to its Z3 and Z4 predecessors and softed slightly due to complaints of the first generation being "too hardcore" has it managed to retain BMW's key ingredients of good handling and driving pleasure?
Up against rivals such as the Mazda Miata MX-5, Mercedes Benz SLK, Porsche Boxster, Toyota MR2, MG TF, Lotus Elise, Honda S2000, Chrysler Crossfire, Nissan 370z, Audi TT, Jaguar XK, Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camero does the tin top from Bavaria have what it takes?

I’ve had my E89 35is since new in 2012. I’ll never get rid of it.
We can see why, happy motoring

I drove my 23i to Mallorca in the summer and it got attention everywhere it went. The looks on the e89 are very reminiscent of an old 50s sports car. The drive was as smooth as you like with the 6cyl and as they say in the z4 world, there’s not much better out there for the money in terms of smiles per miles.
Keep your Mazda, I won’t be selling mine ever if I can help it!
Have you driven an MX-5 or are you just comparing the Z4 with what you imagine other cars are like?
One important topic for going out on a weekend for two. The boot can carry 2 cabin size suitcase ad beach towels in that space below the protection, allowing to go out, and to be allowed to go with roof open.
Thanks for sharing
Last year I got a 2011 BMW Z4 Sdrive 30i and I absolutely love it, it's an amazing car it's the perfect sports car for me. It's truly reliable and extremely sleek and sexy.
Glad you like yours, thanks for watching!
In general I liked this review but I felt like some elements were being a bit more critical of that specific car itself rather than E89's as a whole, for example some do have iDrive and some also do have cup holders in the center console under the arm rest (still useless as they interfere with changing gear whilst driving but still there) and the left hand drive models had the option of one that slots into the passenger side of the transmission tunnel but they never made one for RHD models. Also, as this is a general E89 review you could've branched out into all the different engine choices, you touched on that the one in the review was the 23i with the 2.5l L6 but didn't say anything about what else was available like the 30i and 35i and how after 2011 BMW replaced the 23i and 30i with the 18i, 20i and 28i 2l turbo 4 pots but kept the 35i. The E89 also had a few transmission options too, obviously there was the 6 speed manuals but also several automatics, the 23i and 30i could come with a 6 speed auto, 18i, 20i and 28i actually had the option of a 7 speed auto (no 6 speed except manual) and the 35i had the option of a DCT.
During the test drive section you comment on the suspension and how it felt soft but failed to mention that the car in the video isn't an M-sport and the standard suspension is much softer than the sport suspension which handles and rides differently. In fact there was also the option of adaptive suspension which gave the best of both worlds.
Like I said though, I did actually like this review and I think you have a lot of potential but I think maybe in the future, if I were you, I'd try to do a bit more research on all your talking points as the review does seem to blur the line substantially between critiquing the 23i in the video and E89's in general (which is what this review is supposed to be)
Hi Jake, always welcome feedback but I think you may be mistaken for thinking most people care about any of this.
I could stand in front of the camera and talk for hours about all the different models and specs, but I can’t comment on what any of those are actually like.
I would have thought that would be fairly obvious, as how can I accurately report on something like a different suspension set up, without testing it for myself. I don’t simply accept general views or expectations as fact.
Hope this makes sense but thanks for watching.
Thanks guys
No it's not a Miata. I was also disappointed when i had it for the first few months. It looks so premium it catches a lot of attention.
But when i started doing long distance journeys of 2-3 hours man did this car just eat up the miles. Nothing was more comfortable.
Suddenly the strengths of the Miata, light weight, immediate direct response weren't so desirable any more.
The fact is the twisty roads are far far fewer than highways. The Miata is a god level car but this Z4 has its own strengths as well.
Thanks for commenting. If I had to guess, I’d say you are from the USA? There may be more highways there, but there’s more ‘twisty’ roads here. It feels heavy and indirect on British b-roads. The owner of this one sold it after only having it for a few months. Both he and his wife found it immensely uncomfortable to do long drives in.
Any review of the MKII Z4 which doesn't start off by saying it's the best looking car ever made is already swimming against my tide
Have you been to specsavers recently? Or ever?
One of the best cars ever made if u loook what u get on cars that costs 2 times , 3 times , 4 times tha money ! I drove one over 4 years . What a nice car !!! Greez from Germany!
Glad you liked yours, thanks for watching!
Your review matches the car really good. Well done. When the Z4 came out in 2009 I was stunned. The looks were just something from another world to me but since I was only 24 years old and still studying I was far away from managing to by a new car this expensive. When I started to work I realized I could buy a used z4 35i. And that is exactly what I did. Some years later I needed a bigger car (because of obvious reasons...) and I sold it... What a mistake! 5 years later or 2 years ago I bought another Z4 35is and it will stay in my garage. Forever.
Thanks for watching, glad you’ve enjoyed both of yours!
Love the video. 👊
Thanks for watching!
Interior fairly standard BMW for the time period? Well, no. Actually the Z4's interior was (and still is) quite unique in the BMW line-up. Those round airconditioning controls are not found in any other BMW model. The doors are also asymmetrical: the passenger door has got a "grip handle" (to give the passenger an extra hold in the event the drive gets a bit spirited) which the driver's door lacks.
Thanks for the correction, looks like a BMW interior to me. Don’t know how I sleep at night. I must have been mistaken when I thought Lexus owners were the dullest in the world.
@@BuckleUpShow I own a (2016) Z4 so I'm a sucker for details ;-) Let's call my comment an addition to your review, which otherwise was fairly spot on. If you want a car to give you kicks through the twisties, then a Z4 isn't it. It most certainly can't hold a candle to your Elise. However, if you like to go on weekend (or longer) trips, cruise in comfort and still want a sporty touch (like I do), then the Z4 is a great car. As always it comes down to what you're looking for: horses for courses. Keep up the good work.
My z4 has
2 Cup holders
I drive
Driver side glove box
Rear shelf compartment
And even a place that can store Skis
But this one didn’t 🤷♂️
Getting a Z4 i35 today despite your best efforts to talk me out of it :-D
Enjoy it 😊
I do think it was quite a good review. Currently looking for a red one for my SO with the same engine as in the video.
Good choice!
Don't rule out the 3.0 normally aspirated
Short thought on the indicators: best way to cancel a 'left' is by gently pushing a 'left' again - like you would aim for that 'triple blink lane change signalling'. Reasoning goes: if you hit it soft enough, it will cancel. Else, it will continue to indicate left and you can try again. At least there will be no annoying left-right-left-right mess....
Unless you're the one who designed them, you don't have to defend them, we both know they're awful
@@BuckleUpShow No thoughts to defending, that's for sure! Just trying to live/drive with them :)
They're livable for sure, but for us at least they're also always irritating
An excellent review! Can I ask how tall you are as I'm 6'3" and wondering if I'd fit in the cabin?
I'm 188cm, it's quite a roomy cabin for this type of car
This is a very practical car. Went on a skitrip this year and it can take luggage , skiboots and skis in the trunk for two persons. Try that with a Miata or even some sedan cars. Also to mention is that this is the best looking hard folding top car ever made.
It's very practical for a 2 seat roadster, if you’re buying a chest of draws, though, a 5-Series Touring might still be the move.
😆 That’s true , you won’t be moving sofas with a Z4.
Don’t listen to the butt-hurt snobs here complaining about the MX-5 comparison, it was a good review and an interesting point price-wise. I myself had a ND and a F30, and watched this review exactly because I’m wondering between another ND or an E89 for my particular “wants” (weekend fun car). Cheers
We find it all very amusing as they are clearly highly comparable on the used market
I’ve been thinking of getting this car but I’m a tall guy (6’3 240lbs), will I be able to fit or should I consider a different car?
This is pretty much the most spacious 2 seat roadster you can get, you'll probably be alright
I prefer the z4 I think the proportions of the mx5 are a bit too small.
Each to their own
thair is a 2 leter . i have had my Z4 23i for 5 years i wil never get rid of it
This is a 23i which means it has a 2.5 Litre 6 cylinder
The lack of a cupholder is a confusing omission
Especially when it’s aimed at the American market
Love the Z4. Got one as a second car
Thanks for watching!
Don't forget about the fuel injection. It was a German brand
Huh?

*Forgets to turn off turn indicator " this is a flar on BMW" meanwhile BMW is like "why not use the soft tuch 3-5 blink functuon when overtaking and save the hard click for actual 90 degree turning.

How tall are you? For reference
188 cm
Z4 - MX-5 Other than being 2 seat convertibles they are nothing alike
Apart from the fact they are both also front engined, rear wheel drive?

Damn It all you british guys always have the 4 bangers. My E89 doesn't have the single dual exhaust tips it has the DUAL exhaust tips
Thanks for feeling the need to share you have dual exhaust tips. This is a 6-cylinder car btw

What an awful review. Failing to mention major Z4 facts and also constantly making mistakes about the specs. Zero research and you really should ve compare it with the boxter not the slow bathtub from japan. Also try some sim sessions, it could really help you with the gear changes pal.
Thanks Nic, can you be a bit more constructive around what mistakes I’ve made? It’s the same price as an NC MX-5 and they have very similar performance figures so not sure what your issue is with that. Don’t think there was anything wrong with my gear changes, but I’m obviously not a pro driver like yourself, however I imagine playing some video games wouldn’t really help.
This is a GT car, a Miata isn't in the same class.
No, it’s a sports car, and one that costs the same as a used MX-5 in the UK. A very clear comparison.
@@BuckleUpShow That's ok, we don't have to agree. I've owned an E89 for 10 years, whereas miatas always looked like toy cars to me.
Answer....no.
MX-5 is like a toy car in comparison. Like a go kart. The zed is a tourer.
Thanks for watching!
I sat as passenger in friends latest MX-5. First my eye line was level with top of window frame. Interior seemed cheap plastic and exterior paint inside top of doors. That's a cheap idea i expect in Fiats.. The ac buttons about the best thing. Seem to move along ok, should do half the weight of the Z. My Z4 E89 is 14 years old now, no body rust. Can't say that about MX-5.
Z i like as it has a bit of retro look interior. Beige and wood reminds of Riva Aquarama power boat roof down.
🤣🤣🤣
Thanks for watching!
This review soooo painful I have to stop watching. Too many silly irrelevant opinions.

Oh no, we’re devastated to lose such a big fan who’s been with us since the beginning (the last 23 hours). What would help make you stay?
the incompetence in person. how do you compare a z4 to a mx5? 😂😂😂😂
With relative ease if you bother to watch the video
You're not very bright, are you
Its a Cardinal sin to compare a MX5 to a Z4. It's like comparing a 2 star budget lodge to a 5 star hotel. That MX5 is not anywhere near the class, comfort and performance of a Z4. If you really need to compare, go and get a 28i, 35i or even the 35is versions of the E89 Z4. They will rip the MX5 of any generation to shreds. And go and google Z4 GT3 and see the widebody V8 version of the E89 Z4. MX5 is always the solution dog poop quote is not going to work here.
Don't review a car if you don't know what you are talking about
Which bit was wrong, Francis?

And exactly how far into the video did you get before coming to this conclusion?

You haven't actually provided any constructive feedback. You have, however, nearly provided two proper sentences. Keep up the good work!
And you provided us an indepth video with no depth, 2 grammatically perfect arrogant replies so what does it leaves you with? Lol and the matter of fact that you probably cant say even hello in my language so hold on to your english knowledge, that might be the only strength in u ;)
