No it's not a Miata. I was also disappointed when i had it for the first few months. It looks so premium it catches a lot of attention. But when i started doing long distance journeys of 2-3 hours man did this car just eat up the miles. Nothing was more comfortable. Suddenly the strengths of the Miata, light weight, immediate direct response weren't so desirable any more. The fact is the twisty roads are far far fewer than highways. The Miata is a god level car but this Z4 has its own strengths as well.
Thanks for commenting. If I had to guess, I’d say you are from the USA? There may be more highways there, but there’s more ‘twisty’ roads here. It feels heavy and indirect on British b-roads. The owner of this one sold it after only having it for a few months. Both he and his wife found it immensely uncomfortable to do long drives in.
Last year I got a 2011 BMW Z4 Sdrive 30i and I absolutely love it, it's an amazing car it's the perfect sports car for me. It's truly reliable and extremely sleek and sexy.
One important topic for going out on a weekend for two. The boot can carry 2 cabin size suitcase ad beach towels in that space below the protection, allowing to go out, and to be allowed to go with roof open.
I drove my 23i to Mallorca in the summer and it got attention everywhere it went. The looks on the e89 are very reminiscent of an old 50s sports car. The drive was as smooth as you like with the 6cyl and as they say in the z4 world, there’s not much better out there for the money in terms of smiles per miles. Keep your Mazda, I won’t be selling mine ever if I can help it!
@@BuckleUpShow it's not only about driving. It is a design masterpiece, great proportions, great engine. If you put 18" non rft tyres, it becomes a really nice car to drive daily. It has a luxurious dna also compared to Miata
In general I liked this review but I felt like some elements were being a bit more critical of that specific car itself rather than E89's as a whole, for example some do have iDrive and some also do have cup holders in the center console under the arm rest (still useless as they interfere with changing gear whilst driving but still there) and the left hand drive models had the option of one that slots into the passenger side of the transmission tunnel but they never made one for RHD models. Also, as this is a general E89 review you could've branched out into all the different engine choices, you touched on that the one in the review was the 23i with the 2.5l L6 but didn't say anything about what else was available like the 30i and 35i and how after 2011 BMW replaced the 23i and 30i with the 18i, 20i and 28i 2l turbo 4 pots but kept the 35i. The E89 also had a few transmission options too, obviously there was the 6 speed manuals but also several automatics, the 23i and 30i could come with a 6 speed auto, 18i, 20i and 28i actually had the option of a 7 speed auto (no 6 speed except manual) and the 35i had the option of a DCT. During the test drive section you comment on the suspension and how it felt soft but failed to mention that the car in the video isn't an M-sport and the standard suspension is much softer than the sport suspension which handles and rides differently. In fact there was also the option of adaptive suspension which gave the best of both worlds. Like I said though, I did actually like this review and I think you have a lot of potential but I think maybe in the future, if I were you, I'd try to do a bit more research on all your talking points as the review does seem to blur the line substantially between critiquing the 23i in the video and E89's in general (which is what this review is supposed to be)
Hi Jake, always welcome feedback but I think you may be mistaken for thinking most people care about any of this. I could stand in front of the camera and talk for hours about all the different models and specs, but I can’t comment on what any of those are actually like. I would have thought that would be fairly obvious, as how can I accurately report on something like a different suspension set up, without testing it for myself. I don’t simply accept general views or expectations as fact. Hope this makes sense but thanks for watching.
Interior fairly standard BMW for the time period? Well, no. Actually the Z4's interior was (and still is) quite unique in the BMW line-up. Those round airconditioning controls are not found in any other BMW model. The doors are also asymmetrical: the passenger door has got a "grip handle" (to give the passenger an extra hold in the event the drive gets a bit spirited) which the driver's door lacks.
Thanks for the correction, looks like a BMW interior to me. Don’t know how I sleep at night. I must have been mistaken when I thought Lexus owners were the dullest in the world.
@@BuckleUpShow I own a (2016) Z4 so I'm a sucker for details ;-) Let's call my comment an addition to your review, which otherwise was fairly spot on. However, if you like to go on weekend (or longer) trips, cruise in comfort and still want a sporty touch (like I do), then the Z4 is a great car. Your review matches the car really good. Well done. When the Z4 came out in 2009 I was stunned. The looks were just something from another world to me but since I was only 24 years old and still studying I was far away from managing to by a new car this expensive. When I started to work I realized I could buy a used z4 35i. And that is exactly what I did. Some years later I needed a bigger car (because of obvious reasons...) and I sold it... Short thought on the indicators: best way to cancel a 'left' is by gently pushing a 'left' again - like you would aim for that 'triple blink lane change signalling'. Reasoning goes: if you hit it soft enough, it will cancel. Else, it will continue to indicate left and you can try again. At least there will be no annoying left-right-left-right mess....
I bought this exact same model from new Dec 2009, I got 2 drinks holders as an extra. After 55,000 miles under its belt , I still own it, it’s taken us on several trips to Spain and the south of France and accommodated all the luggage required for the trip. I have maxed out the top speed of 150 mph on the German autobahn and it took it all in its stride. It’s sales through its MOT every year and only the cost of a service at the appropriate interval with no breakdowns or faults over 14 years. A few years ago it had a BMW recall for the battery connections and this month has had another recall on the Vanos system. Overall it’s been a pleasure to drive and own and it will continue to be my weekend drive for as long as I can get in and out of it. I would highly recommend this variant to anyone.
Don’t listen to the butt-hurt snobs here complaining about the MX-5 comparison, it was a good review and an interesting point price-wise. This is a very practical car. Went on a skitrip this year and it can take luggage , skiboots and skis in the trunk for two persons. Try that with a Miata or even some sedan cars. Also to mention is that this is the best looking hard folding top car ever made.
I have the 30i SDrive with iDrive, etc... 6 cylinder, 254 bhp / 0-60 mph in 5.6 secs. It really is a good car and I enjoy driving it although I see it more of a GT car than a proper sports car (which is fine with me, by the way). My car has 17 inch alloys and I am not running run flat tyres, which increases massively the ride comfort in British roads (ie: dirt tracks with pot holes that can swallow up your whole car). I haven't driven an MX5, but that car is in my "before I snuff it" list to own/try, for sure, as all the reviews are incredibly complimentary about the handling.
A great review. I watched this because I am looking to buy a Z4 E89 having driven an MX-5 for the last 15years - which I absolutely love BTW. But faced with shelling out for rust repairs I decided it was time for a change. The family car is a BMW F31 3 Series Touring which is great to drive. But how I chuckled when you mentioned the indicators not cancelling and accidentally turning the opposite one one when you try to manually cancel it. Drives me mad and I said the same thing that the crappy design is probably the reason that BMW drivers have a reputation for not indicating.😄
Well, it's been a few weeks and soon after my last reply I bought a Z4 SDrive 30i manual in M Sport spec. I still have the MX-5 (it's for sale) and I can honestly say that the Mazda is more fun to chuck around twisty roads. However, driving the 3.0litre Z4 is truly breathtaking. The engine is sublime. It is a truly remarkable car. Yes you have to respect that it is heavier and less chuckable than the MX-5, but the whole driving experience is incredible. When I passed my driving test (a long while ago!) the Ferrari Testarossa was the fastest car you could buy (I think there was a Lambo that rivalled it). The Ferrari did it in 5.7sec. The 3.0 Z4 does it in 5.8sec. You run out of road so quickly. It's the pinnacle four wheeled things today.
