the game really is gorgeous, from the start of the game when you get introduced to the first characters you immediately spot the beautiful designs especially with their clothes ... for example Aloys clan with the nice clean and colorful wardrobe of blue strings/ropes with white metal pieces and animal fur/skin just very eye catching
I always appreciated how they used Loish to help with Aloy designs, even though her work isn't the usual standard AAA realistic style. It proves that a strong design is a strong design and different people with different approaches can generate interesting ideas that still work well together.
Testament of great art direction - it’s not whats “popular” (although Loish is definitely popular), it’s what fits the vision A great director will seek that out before going for the popular choice
Horizon zero dawn is definitely one of my favorite games on the ps4. The art style and gameplay is amazing. It was great that you got to show us the art book for it. Thank you.
one of my favorite design choices in this whole game is the shape language, the shape repetition even that is so strong it becomes a symbol to identify what you're looking at. the triangular patterns that represent anything made by gaia, the sort of....flattened hexagon that is repeated in everything from fabric patterns to overlapping armor pieces to overall garment shapes that you find everywhere throughout the carja designs, etc. they do it so much that it could easily have become heavy-handed, but it's not. it's about as perfect a balance as its possible to get imo, and one of the strongest implementations of shape in design that i can remember seeing.

This game will always stand as an example of how procedural generation used correctly, alongside purposefully crafted environments can help create expansive worlds that are still artistically pleasing. I've never been able to properly enjoy procedurally generated games such as rogue likes, regardless of how good the game mechanics are, but with this game the procedurally generated bits actually enhance the experience by emulating the randomness of nature and creating contrast with the designed look of man-made spaces. I also love how the temperament of each of the game's cultures is reflected in their relationship with nature: where the Nora live in awe and reverence of it, the Carja seek to domesticate and eradicate it.
12:05 - Instantly recognized that as a Craig Mullins piece. 13:08 - Whoa, those Shadow Carja soldiers look so cool! But dang, where did they put the credits for the illustrations?! And the Oseram! HNNNNNG!
The greatest game art book and honestly the best art book I've still seen to this day is the MGS art book collection. 800ish pages of character design, storyboarding, promotional images, etc with tons of comments by the art god himself Yogi Shinkawa. Its just a beast as well since it covers the process over 4 video games so you see the continued development of characters.
3:48 haha ill explain this. When you play the game you can find these hidden vantage points, when you go to them you can use your focus to use them. Once they have been found, it will show you parts of what the world looked like before the word fell to ruin. I guess that may have been art for that.
Nice one Adam, I had a big hand in designing the mechs so it's interesting to hear you talk about the form and function mechanics. What I strived to do for mechs, was a major pain to design the mechs but it paid off.
I am amassing quite the art book collection myself. Lots of game art books but also Luis Royo , Brom. Boris vallejo and julie Bell are highly recommended
This game does SUCH an amazing job at combining tribal and sci-fi elements and still not lose the whole design aesthetic and storytelling aspects. Absolutely beautiful.
I've always had crazy pinball like fever dreams and yet not many dreams accurately capture nature. At least you don't seem to notice if they do. It is fascinating that a machine could feel like a better simulation of the organic qualities in nature than the imagination recognizes in itself and that the imagination can believe it produces more visually intricate machines than reality. This game seemed to embody that and the merging of worlds seems to always compel us. An architect I saw recently talked about needing his work to bring in nature. Your nature may also benefit from a little machinery. It's an idea worth thinking about from any end of that spectrum you might be on.
3:43 I believe they had to show the world before the 31st century as a gauge of how the technologically advanced predecessors looked like to gauge the deterioration of their urban landscape, as well as place where exactly in Colorado,USA were they placing the fictional Cauldrons and other facilities.

Adam, there's a book I think you need to see, especially given the tone and subject matter of some of your paintings: Berni Wrightson: A look back. It was printed in 1991 by Underwood - Miller. Berni Wrightson was one of those artists that pretty much taught me to draw, way back when, and more or less catered to my more morbid streak. If you don't already know who he is, I think you'll enjoy seeing his work. Edit - Unfortunately, used copies start at about $119 on Amazon, ( Yikes! I paid like $20 for mine, new. ) and I don't find any place mentioning a reprint. Sorry. Anyway, I still think you should look him up and take a look at his work - again, that's if you don't already know who he is.
Oh my GOSH! I've been itching to get a copy of this book! Now I want it even more! I saw a piece of art from Craig Mullins and didn't realise it was for Horizon Zero Dawn until you stopped on the page about "culture". So awesome! Although, I would say, that fold in the middle diminishes the feel of the artwork for me. What is your take on that? I'd rather not print over a two page spread but then there is the dilemma of shrinking it down to half the page. Do you think it would break the rhythm of paging if you rotated the image sideways to fit a single page (then you'd have to turn the book to view it)?
I love horizon zero dawn, its one of my favourite games of all time. The game could definitely do with a few fixes but hopefully the second one (horizon forbidden west) will fix those issues. The art is so inspiring to me, I am studying to become a concept artist and I would love to work for game companies and do this type of stuff. Great video as always Adam 👍
Excellent choice of word to describe the bandits as parasites. I saw them as plain thieves but parasites? It adds a subtle layer of who they are and how they act
The robot animation in this games looks amazing (like everything else). The story and world building is what I would expect out of a book, not the usual shallow story of most video games
The Making of Horizon Zero Dawn by Noclip talks about how it was almost a very different game, which is why they have the modernistic cityscape at the beginning of the book. Definitely worth a watch if you want to see the evolution of how Guerilla Games went from making Call of Duty-esque games to the beautiful Science Fantasy world of HZD. I love how you talk about the little details that really differentiate the tribes. Those are the cool tidbits that make the game so memorable, how the designers were able to give us a good first impression of what kind of society and environment each of the tribes hail from just based on the clothing and building designs. The Carja live in the desert, so their clothes are made of breathable fabrics and their religion is based on the sun; the Banuk live in a land of eternal winter, so their clothing is made of thick furs and they're all about survival; etc.

You talking about Aloy?
@@AdamDuffArt Yep. I know it was a thing people got confused about when it was first revealed but throughout the game they say it so much that mispronouncing it is impossible. It's nit-picky, i know, sorry. :)
My one-year old daughter always waves at you when she sees me watching your videos and says 'oi-oi', which is portuguese for "hi-hi".
Rude of you not to wave back. Shame on you, Adam. Shame. Lol
