    The Art Director that works with Kojima on his games is actually called "Yoji Shinkawa". They've been together for years and years now.
    For a better look at his drawing style and his mechanical designs, you can check out "The Art of Metal Gear Solid I-IV" or any of the art books for Zone of the Enders.
    I believe they were only released with Collector's Editions. To get my hands on the bigger one, I had to import the PS3 HD Collector's from Japan because the North American version of Konami titles from the PS3 era always had the best versions in Japan, and they never released them in Europe for some weird reason.

    What amaze me the most in this work, is the amount of freedom and courage that Mr. Kojima give to their artists. You know, in my point of view as an artist, the more freedom you get, the more you get in to the "stuck" state, but their team able to overcome it!

    This book looks amazing, definitely picking up a copy. I wish you had made more mention of Yoji Shinkawa in the video though. Kojima's creativity is definitely a huge part in his games, but people tend to forget the other super important half of the aesthetics in those games are really due to the artwork of Yoji Shinkawa. Ever since policenauts the duo of Kojima and Shinkawa have pretty much worked on everything together, but Shinkawa has really stayed out of the eye of the media compared to Kojima so he's often overlooked. He's a super talented artist and that loose gestural style, mechanical design, and grounded character design work is all pioneered by him.

    • @EmiClay
      @EmiClay 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      i agree. it's somewhat frustrating that he is attributing all the creativity and ideas throughout the game to kojima solely. shinkawa created the iconic style of kojima's games and brought kojima's unique story ideas to life. many other talented designers/artists worked on creating the visuals for this game and MGS and he completely overlooks them, not even bothering to read the artist credits which would be in the book for sure. kojima is widely called an 'auteur' but people forget that he has an amazing team of designers behind him.

    Amazing insight as always Adam! I agree with what you're saying, I have found that as I've gotten older and busier, I find it very hard to fit Kojima style games into my life. As I live at the moment, I try to spend any free time that I have on my art and own projects and almost feel 'guilty' sitting and playing games for any more than a couple of hours when I could be spending my time doing that instead. I've realised through your videos, especially the one about 'waiting for the right moment to be creative' that life is too damn short to just put things off until tomorrow when they can be done today.

    I'm personally a huge Death Stranding fan, and that comes with following Kojima-san for a long time, I grew up with Metal Gear Solid and it actually helped me understand not only video games but also the importance of storytelling. I'm one of those people who played Death Stranding for hundreds of hours, delivering stuff without feeling bored or tired even for a single moment.
    I, unfortunately, don't have access to buy an artbook, not just Death Stranding, it's a regional problem, but thanks to you Adam, no I realized something by seeing these arts.
    Not only the audience wasn't ready for this game, but the technology is also lacking as I see. A lot of these designs were either changed or deformed and sort of "dumbed" down so it fits the scope of the game. I understand that even now it has cost Kojima Productions and Sony a lot of money to make this. But... some of these arts just show how far off to the future Kojima thinks and sees. I understand a lot of these arts couldn't possibly be made 3D or real. They just had to let it go and do it differently.
    Thanks for the video and I hope you really get to play the game because the story is really worth it. I'm sure being a father yourself, you'll like it a lot. Warning though, the game is really sad. :D

      @neutral_10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I understand and respect your opinion of the game but I personally feel like the story would have worked better in a film/ television format. The video game medium did not help the game with long cutscenes and a lot of excessive walking within the game. Just my thoughts on an otherwise interesting and weird story.

    • @user-yk1cw8im4h
      @user-yk1cw8im4h ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ashley Wood painted MGS comic books, but his style is an exception to rule in the comic book industry. It's more an INDIE comic book than a mainstream style. And it's not an easy style to sell (Self-experience. I was forced to adapt and change my style to fit the industry standards).

    It's published by Dark Horse. As another big fan of Yoji Shinkawa it's worth every penny, I swear it. it contains pretty much all major titles from Metal Gear Solid artwork.
    It was so difficult to get any of the art of MGS books because Shinkawa's work is just so coveted, naturally. I just beat the game the other night and it was a one of a kind experience. There were several aspects of the game that disappointed me, but the walking mechanics were not one of those, it's actually my favorite aspect of the game. The world is incredible and I can never get tired of just looking at it. It's not a perfect game by a long shot, I remember hearing that there were issues during development so they had to alter a lot of content, but what we got is a profoundly unique experience and everything stylistically about the game is awe inspiring.

Also would love your opinion on a protective case. I travel over seas will be using it for everything from concept development, illustration to graphics and architectural concepts. Might be bringing it on construction sites with me while working on revisions.

      @dwintster Check Amazon.co.uk and search for ‘KHOMO iPad Pro 12.9” (2017 version only) Magnetic Smart Cover and Silicone back case’ and you should see the case which I bought, it’s very good. Mine is the 12.9” screen. I don’t have a screen protector on mine, you’ll see the case when closed protects the screen so I never bothered. If you are looking at the correct case it’s around £21

    Lol as a french you caught me off guard when you spoke french 😂
    Elle est délicate very française oui oui moi son sourire m'a un peu fait flipper ingame quand même 😥 Uncanny valley, peut être.
    Edit: Junji Ito was never involved in the game people stop spreading rumours please the only relation he has with Ds is that they scanned his face for an Npc and that he was contacted by Kojima for Silent Hills. Its not because there are horrors elements in DS that its made by Junji.
    I hate how people believe their own fantasies all the time without even verifying if its true or not 🤔

    Also, you forgot to mention that Junji Ito was also heavily involved in P.Ts (Silent Hills) art direction!
    Great video tho! Was looking forward to this one :)

    thats my complain about that game, the idea of playing a videogame is to be in a "new world"doing some imposible stuff not to be a walker with a bunch of heavy bags, n if you are looking to make something realistic just jump into the future with 200 is enough but o well it is what it is, i personally hate realistic type of games.

    My top 3 games of all time are Death Stranding, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last of Us.

    Yes i beat the game, such great work! One thing i'm curious which one is Promo Art vs actual Concept Art these books tend to show polished work but it's only after the game is already in production aka Promo Art...i'm not bashing on it is just something for people to know about. Maybe a new video Idea on the topic.

      I like both, as long as the artists get credit for their work. However, as an artist, I wouldn't want my crudest sketches for concepts published in an artbook.

    did anyone ever noticed that the trailer of death stranding was literally 3-4 times used in the game and every time it had a different meaning? Like the first thing I´ve noticed is that most of the cutscenes had a hidden meaning.

    Hey guys! I'm from Brazil and decided do learn how to draw and paint in december of 2019.
    Since then, i've been studying on my own, and improving, but often times I feel lost in the progress. My wish is to take it seriously, and be able to work on feature movies, games, that kind of stuff.
    Do you know any real good, focused on the industry, and a bit affordable online class/course that I could take? I'm aware that Adam have a mentorship program, but it's too expensive for me, since (1 CAD) = (3.5 BRL), and I am a begginer/intermediat.

    I have a love hate relationship with Hideo Kojima and his games.
    Aesthetically he has a style influenced as much by western comics as it is Traditional Manga, an almost perfect balance between the two. It makes most of his work timeless in a way, as it is constantly evoking feelings of Nostalgia.
    The worlds he creates take just a bit of the fantastical, and twist it just enough to make it seem plausible. Gray Fox being a perfect example as Ninjas are often depicted as super human, so making him a Cyborg Samurai / Ninja allows his superhuman ability to seem plausible. Not grounded in our own reality by any means, but firmly grounded in the established high tech world he inhabits.
    The Metal Gear series pioneered several mechanics that other games would quickly adopt until they became the norm. Sadly Metal Gear Solid 4's contribution to this was the inclusion of 20+ hours of cutscenes.
    I'm sure in time games will start using more realistic weight and physics based mechanics like what Death Stranding was trying to do. Though Honestly I don't think it needed to be a game at all, it feels like Kojima wanted to make a movie a bit more than a game much like with Metal Gear Solid 4.
    But as is the ability to make the realistic physics of being a glorified postal worker... are better left to Fedex / UPS and real Postal workers.
