fr I'm tired of people not understanding that some people aren't as lucky as others to be able to safely come out of the closet. and yes there are people who come out and met fortunate circumstances but it's not always nice and IT STILL DOESN'T MEAN THAT OTHERS HAVE TO JEOPARDIZE THEIR SAFETY JUST BECAUSE YOU THINK THEY'RE "BETRAYING" THE QUEER COMMUNITY. anyway y'all are so articulate when it comes to explaining how y'all feel about a book and I could never lol
We feel like it’s our one superpower tbh. This compliment means even more now that we’ve developed a stutter - we’re very good at hiding it. So thank u 🙏🏽
Eek, did Clare watch Happiest Season and go like, “That sapphic Christmas romance wasn’t problematic *enough?* I can fix that!” I have some of her other books (not this one, though) and I’m giving them a major side-eye now!
@@JesseOnTH-cam If you’re looking for something else queer/sapphic, I really like Lily Seabrooke, Jacqueline, Ramsden, and Chelsea M. Cameron. All of them have multiple holiday books. Lily is trans, Jacqueline is genderqueer and demisexual, and Chelsea is nonbinary, and while they each sometimes write cis characters, they also write characters that reflect their own identities and experiences too.
Framing a queer person staying closeted as a personal flaw is just so ignorant. "Hey, you're obligated to let everyone know you're un-straight/un-cis, even if bigots in your life will make your miserable or try to hurt you. And you have to bear the brunt of that instead of the person putting pressure on you."
I'm always tempted to pick up a queer holiday romance when I see them in the book store but I'm always afraid of something like this. I don't want to spend Christmas reading about internalised homophobia :') Also I agree with everything y'all said about the treatment of closeted characters, this can never be emphasised enough. I mean, there is room for messy romances but that's just shaming. Happy Holidays ✨️
this is so fucking sad. its unfair that we have to protect ourselves from both community outsiders and community strangers :( am going to be reading more queer holiday books and will be sure to talk about how queerness is handled in our wrap up/reviews etc
The ghost of Jesse Marley has arrived to warn this author to change her ways! Oof. Kiss Her Once for Me. I quit that one at 84% because while the miscommunication was terrible, the last straw was the entire family turning on Ellie when it was the brother who came up with the fake relationship scheme in the first place!
I hate the line “she needs to be who she is.” Yes, my sexuality is a big part of who I am but it’s not all I am and why do other people need to know my sexuality in order for me to “be who I am.” If I have figured myself out then I’m already being who I am and being who I am for myself is all that matters. Not coming out does not mean a person hasn’t accepted themselves.
I adore this series!! This was a great Christmas present for me. Hope y'all didn't have to suffer too much through it Also Fran's actions give me huge red flags, this book will definitely be a pass for me.
As much as I like watching this channel to get good book recommendations... I have to admit, I freaking love it when y'all do these absolutely scathing takedowns.
I had this on my wishlist for a while but remember not being wowed by the listening sample. Took it off now. But I am here to scream about Make You Mine This Christmas in case someone is still looking for a great sapphic Holiday romance!
I can’t say I’m surprised this book sucks; I read London Calling by the same author several years ago and was put off reading anything else by her. The quality of the writing was poor, the story was boring, the way the protagonist talked about other women was really unpleasant, and there’s at least one use of an off-hand transphobic slur (so yeah, when y’all mentioned the weird nonbinary snowman thing, I was doubly unsurprised). I don’t remember the romance being so toxic, though, and the anti-closeting stuff is extra frustrating because Lydon describes how queer people never come out just once in that other book! It’s also really upsetting that this 2020-released book talks about how supposedly normalised queerness is in society now when that’s the year that the UK got EVEN MORE TRANSPHOBIC than it already was, and it’s only been getting worse since :/ I’m sorry y’all had to sit through this nonsense and I hope y’all find some better holiday books to enjoy.
this was such a good analysis!! i love yalls book critiques so much because of how yall thoughtfully unpack the issues but are equally as sincere about the positives of the work
YES! Please more live events like the cookies and cocktails one! I missed it cause of my in law's Christmas, but I'm reeeeeaaally hoping to make it to the next one
What are your thoughts on Stephan King I want to read him but I’ve heard a lot of his books are really problematic and I can’t find anyone I trust enough besides you on if there good or not.
my stance on King is that if other readers want to support him - cool - but I've personally seen enough from his tweets and also by reading several of his books to know that he's a pass for me. He's not an author I'm interested in reading and if i did pickup a book by him, i probably wouln't bother to mention it on my channel so that i could boost other writers instead. but thats just me! i think you should do whatever feels best. even taking the time to question is already a much bigger step than many readers would be willing to take :)
Say this all the time theres something sinister about someone that demands your thoughts, listens, then reorganizing and manipulates them to what they want. They dont want your feelings they want control.
Loved the video as usual, and so glad to see yall will be dragging Kiss her Once for Me next. I liked parts of that book, I think Cochrun is a good writer, but it was problematic AF. Cant wait to see what yall say! seasons greetings
I enjoyed MAKE YOU MINE THIS CHRISTMAS, because queerness, disability and neurodivergence are handled beautifully and with care. It’s a Very White book, though.

Considering that the only other book by this author that I know of is basically an Imagine Me&You retelling I wouldn't be surprised.
“It’s not even taboo anymore”
The way Billie Eilish just lost 100k followers on insta after coming out 💀
infuriating.

I love love love it when characters have in depth conversations about consent. It gets me everytime💗

omg thank you, James hahah there's always a small part of us that gets anxious posting rant reviews

The way I’m still listening to and reading holiday books so thank you for this recommendation 🙏🏽

def hear that! we can see her writing a less problematic book in the future but Kiss Her was NOT it lmao
seasons greetings to you too, Chris!!!
The book may have been a miss but the editing in this video is perfection!
omg thank you!!!
Not my name being put in a sapphic romance full of internalized homophobia 🤡
And not the closeted villain trope, OOF.
ALL OF IT was icky
*cough* Hi, yes, I am an enby with unreasonably high expectations ready to be spoiled and showered with all the great things I deserve 😉
*books flight*
This sounded like trash? 😅
I really liked Kiss her once for me, I'm so curious to hear y'all's take on it, maybe I missed something :)
Kiss Her Once for Me is on my TBR….interested to hear y’all’s thoughts…maybe it needs not to be 😂😂
we're still planning on making the video hopefully in a few days!
