    Very nice nursery. Is there a list of plants that can be propagated by hardwood, softwood cuttings?

    I really like your benches. Do you have any plans or suggestions making them? What kind of wire mesh do you use on the top?

    • @rogerhiggins655
      @rogerhiggins655 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      My benches are 3 X 8 feet and 2 feet tall. They are made from treated 2 X 4s and the legs are landscape timbers cut into 4 pieces. Wire mesh is 3 foot wide fencing with 1 X 2 openings found at big box stores.

    Doe he do this all by himself? And how much do he sell per year? In dollars.
    Very impressive Rodger.
    Thank you.

      It is just me doing the plants. This is what I do when I am not at my real job. My wife, Venice, helps with moving and arranging and really does great with the retail sales while I am at my day job. As far as sales, it gets more each year. It is very well worth the effort.

      + Roger Higgins I am sure it varies from state to state but I was wondering if you need a business license to do this. I was figuring I could just grow a bunch of stuff in my backyard and sell it kind of like a yard sale or on craigslist. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

      I have a PA nursery license and get inspected by the Agriculture Dept. I have a sales tax license that allows me to collect state sales tax. This IS a business.

    Very inspiring! How will you store all of those plants over the winter? Do you have to cover them?

    • @rogerhiggins655
      @rogerhiggins655 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the plants will actually be set on the ground, packed tightly together under the benches. I cover them with white nursery plastic for the winter. Ones that are tougher and can take the winds and cold better are placed on the ground between the covered benches for a little bit of wind protection. Often times there is as much as 2 feet of snow covering all this area. These plants actually spend 1/3 of the year covered with plastic.

      Ok, thanks! This is my first year and I potted over 500 plants. I live in Minnesota and just want to make sure I don't kill them this winter! :-)

      Spencer, you and Chelsea had the detailed tour and still missed some. Mike has been here 3 times and still hasn't seen what you guys have. I hope you guys are doing well down in the 'burgh.

    Am sure this was a fine video, but without the help of additional amplification on your end it was impossible to hear with my audio on 100%. Too bad b/c I sure was interested, but lasted less than a minute- it was that difficult to hear. And no, it is not ME who has the issue.

    why does he still have so many plants at the end of the season?

    • @rogerhiggins655
      @rogerhiggins655 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Funny thing about this business, the more I sell, the more plants I have at the end of the year. I propagate about 98% of what I sell here. The plants you see here are an effort to have enough for next season to be bigger than this season. I really should and could have more plants potted up, but I just don't have the room for them.

      Roger Higgins oh awesome thanks Roger. sorry if my comment sounded "off". I'd love to have something even a quarter of the size of your nursury. when do you take most of your cuttings? admire what youre doing keep up the great work

    • @rogerhiggins655
      @rogerhiggins655 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of my cuttings are done during the summer, but quite a few are done over the winter as well.
