Jason thank you for sharing this most informative lesson on soils. I believe you talked about using this mixture in container rose. You make all your videos sound easy. I sure hope I can do it. Thank you again.
Would rly enjoy seeing a video of how you got started growing and selling step by step like you were saying about selling on Craigslist. Thanks for all the insights! 👍👍
I use a lot of peat moss in my garden beds. I have a huge plastic half-barrel I dump the dry bag into, then water it and let it soak overnight before I try to mix it with anything. It makes it heavy, but at least usable.
I make my soil for cacti. Pumice is my main ingredient. I use other rocks as well but I always use pumice with or without other rocks. Cacti need well draining, fast drying soil. That’s extremely important for your cactus plants health. It’s expensive tho.
The place to go is direct to a sawmill. I get 100yards of mulched bark hardwood for free. I just pay the trucking costs Typically comes in at around 3$/yard. I live 2 miles from the mill
Hey Jason, just had a question regarding using homemade compost, shifted with 3mm hardware cloth, have you tried it before for propagation, would love to see your notes! 👍
Hi Kyle. I've avoided homemade compost for prop just because of the high biological activity. No harm in trying, but I've had good results with wood-based potting blends.
Thanks for the information in this video. What are your thoughts of coconut fiber compared to peat moss? Peat moss isn't really renewable, but I've heard coconut fiber can add too many salts. Thanks in advance.
Hi Lance. Thanks - and that about sums up my knowledge on coconut fiber - there are concerns about the salt levels, and you have to use a reputable supplier to make sure the salt levels are acceptable.
I found a supplier that sells 1/4 minus pine mulch. It is mostly made up of wood chips that are ground down and not fresh. But there is very little bark in it. Would that work?
If it's pretty well composted, it would probably work as a fine component in a potting mix. I'd probably blend with something like perlite for drainage and air porosity.
Hi Jason. Thanks so much for your backyard nursery series. I watch your vids daily as I hope to open a perennial plant stall in London. I hope you can answer a couple of questions: For a potting mix for growing on plug plants, you have quoted a standard mix of peat or coir at 25%, perlite at 25% and composted bark at 50%. Does this mix need fertiliser balls or liquid feed added (if it’s coir not peat wouldn’t the nutrient levels be negligible)? What role does home grown compost play in a mix - does it replace the peat as it’s high in nutrients? Thanks again for your insights and best wishes from the UK.
You'll definitely have to custom your mix based on what's available locally. I hear they pretty much done with peat in the UK, so I guess coir would be the thing. I sometimes add some controlled release prills to the mix, but if you don't, you can compensate with topdress or liquid fertilizer. I'm not sure how home compost would change the outcome - I suppose with higher organic matter, you might see better nutrient retention.
@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Many thanks for the reply. There’s still plenty of peat-based compost in the UK, but it is inexorably on the way out. You must generate a fair bit of compost on the farm, and I’m guessing you use it to top dress your borders rather than incorporating into a mix.
Where do u get the bulk soil? What term do u search for. Im in the middle of noplace usa. Do u use soil blockers..and if so what mix do u use for those.
There are two specialty potting mix suppliers in the local area, and then a few others who do composted bark mulch and wood mulch products - what kinds of local products you can buy, and who is selling them is going to vary a lot by your region. If you're local (Fraser Valley), I used Sumas Gro Media. West Creek Farms is good too. A long time ago I used The Answer (also local) and it was fine, though I may have bought the wrong mix.
Sorry, missed some of your question. I don't use soil blockers - I just find plug trays much easier to use. I would think a fine peat-based mix like the Sunshine mix bale I featured would work fine. Search terms: landscape mulch, composted bark mulch, growing media, potting mix, bulk potting soil - and if you're a but stumped, see if you can find a local nursery who will tell you what they're using. We're a pretty helpful bunch, really!
A suggestion on a very helpful video...or three Rose diseases upclose...diagnosis sort of not cure...my daughter moved into a house and it had wonderful roses and one climber just LITERALLY turned brown...UP QND DOWN...DUSTY LIGHT BROWN NOT A MOLD BUT LIGHT BROWN... and IT died ALMOST over night. ...she was gone for a week so it may of died over a week long time...but Still FAST...I HAVE NEVER SEEN NOR HEARD OF SUCH A THING. Damn Jason you Are a ocean Of Knowledge! Thank You. 07.07.2024
Thank you Jason I am new to gardening and I must say I find your videos very informative and very helpful to me in getting started
Thanks Janet - I'm glad you find them helpful
Thank you Jason.
I will check my local bulk supplier for a potting mix.
Nice idea for my sand will ground to amend with planting a pot mix.
Excellent information, thanks I have been mixing my potting mix for a couple of years now. 👍❤️😊

Thanks - and I do love pumice in the mixes where I've used it. It holds up really well! Yes, expensive though.
Thanks for the good advice.

Thank you !! Great information.
Thanks for this video! Why do you start away from added fertilizers? Do you add your own?

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Thanks for the quick reply.
Would you add fertiliser to the composted bark mix?
Yes
Is coco coir good to have in the soil mix to improve drainage?
It may depend on the form - chunky coir has pretty decent drainage, while the short fiber material retains moisture.
Hi,obviously you did. Great

If u add lime it will increase the acidity? But u said you adding to get rid of acidity.. Contradicting.. Pls explain?
Lime decreases acidity. I'll have to check the video again, but if I said otherwise I misspoke.
