As a mom of 9, my sixth born in the SUV, I would like to comment that every labor can also be very different. Mine are usually greater than 8 hrs with pretty consistent contractions and progressive labor. His was under 3 hours and contractions I still don’t quite grasp with no progression of labor. Ironically it fits his personality. Thanks for making my story feel more normal, and not the typical response “well what did you expect with that many”.
What do you do about cutting the cord and delivering the placenta when this happens? I want to have my baby unassisted at home but I’m not sure what to do after lol

Love this story!! I so remember that urge to push. I remember the doctor barely making it into the hospital room when my third was born. He told me to stop pushing but "I" wasn't doing it, my body was! My son was born in the amniotic sac, completely intact! So my water didn't break until he was fully born outside the womb!
Listen, labor denial is a THING! I was 40 weeks to the day with my second. I did not have a bag packed. I labored mildly all night, didnt think anything of it. My husband was going to go to work and at the time we only had 1 vehicle so I would have been stranded at home alone. I actually told him "go on to work, I'm fine". Luckily he knows me a little better than that and stayed. He bullied me into going in and lo and behold I was dilated to 6, had her an hour later. If I had my way, I would've had a home birth all alone or birthed her in the car on the way. I learned my lesson but it still didn't change my labor denial. I don't think that ever changes. Loved this story, please share more. There's nothing like a good birth story. ❤
I remember being 41w+5 and thinking "oh well, I guess I'll never have a baby." and literally believing it
Totally a thing! With my sixth (3rd vaginal delivery) all morning I had been in denial that my contractions were “real”, but my husband had been watching and thought we should start getting ready to go. My water broke all over our kitchen floor and STILL I looked at my husband and said, “ I don’t know, I’m still not sure...” 😂 luckily he just practically threw me in the car at that point. It seems so crazy now but totally logical at the time!
It’s a thing alright! I just gave birth to my first born on 7/20/19 at 34 weeks and 1 day gestation. My water broke that morning as I was getting ready for work and I actually tried to go to work! My partner had to talk sense into me to get to the hospital and thank god he did! I had a baby boy in my arms within 4 hours!!!
Same! I was only 38 weeks though! I was having contractions every 4-5 minutes but they werent strong at all like I could talk and walk through them, but when I stood up I felt a hush of blood! So i went into the hospital and they said I was a 5 but told me to go home and labor there because it was 1am, and i only live down the street from the hospital. So I came home, and went to sleep and was having them less frequently the next day. Then the 2nd day my brother came into town and we were doing a bunch of walking getting last minute stuff. Got 2 contractions and then my water broke! So we rushed to the hospital because my first son came out 20 minutes after my water broke. Got to the hospital and my baby was already coming out before we got up to Labor and delivery 🙃

I love the Bradley Method. I had 5 home births. Amazing experiences, for sure! I wouldn’t choose any other way to give birth.
I actually helped birth my friend’s baby in a van with the police escorting us.
The baby was born (in the van) on a golf course, with the golfers cheering in the background. It was quite the experience!

Friends of ours gave birth to their first child in the parking lot of their apartment building - made the evening news! Mom and daughter were fine, Dad was kinda freaked out but was a trooper, catching his baby and caring for both of them until the EMT arrived!
I love birth stories. I’ve had six, my 4 daughters have now given us 13 grands plus 4 more from our sons. And now the greats are coming, 10 so far and one more this summer. Each story is a bit different but all are wonderful miracles! My husband was the only one born in a car! In 1941. And his mother never wanted to tell the story but we begged until she finally did.

My third was also an unassisted birth, my mum and husband caught baby girl on my bed 😂 By the time the midwife came she was nursing and the placenta was in a bowl next to me (still attached to baby) all happy and heathy and it makes a great story! 🤪

Love your story, Lisa! It's super similar to mine! My van birth was with my third baby (but it was my first natural birth, the first two were induced at the hospital, so I had never had contractions at home before) and I was 9 days late when I went into labor. We also were using a birth center and midwife for the first time. I also called the midwife and was told to wait a little longer because my contractions were still far apart (but super painful). She told me to get in the shower to see if it would speed things along (my BIG MISTAKE). I hit transition as soon I got in the shower and woke my husband with my "vocalizing" (because yes, I'd told him to go to bed because I was also super in denial). Thankfully, he insisted we leave right then, and he also intuitively prepped the van for a birth. We picked up my mom (which wasn't part of the original plan, but again, he knew). We got on the highway (still 20 min from the center) and I told my mom I had to push. She had my husband get off and pull into our local fire dept. She knocked and a paramedic came out and baby was born like 10 seconds later! We went by ambulance to the birth center where I delivered the placenta. That was four years ago, and if we have any more they will definitely be home births! Thanks for sharing your story! ❤️
Women need to learn to trust their instincts more. My first birth was so much harder because of interventions.

All natural birth, but never got the urge to push, hemorrhaged, never got the “mom instincts”, I was convinced he was dying for a week or more after his birth but he was perfectly healthy 🤷🏻♀️
Again, I admire anyone who gets those instincts, but without someone telling me what to do I would’ve been absolutely lost the first year of my sons life.

Amazing story! I love telling the story of my 14 yo. Her birth was quite eventful. She was 2 weeks early and 8lb 13oz. I was 41 weeks with my 10 yo and scared he would be huge. But, I listened to my dr and she waited to induce...even tho he was over 9 lbs he was severely jaundice and had to remain hospitalized. Everyone else may “know” what’s best but ultimately your body does. There’s a reason u go beyond 40 weeks and there’s nothing wrong with it. Tfs your story. ❤️
My 3rd was a VBAC2 in my bathroom floor on all 4's. Home-birth wasn't the plan we had. It was the best experience EVER! So thankful the Lord had a better plan than I ever could've imagined!
I also had my 4th baby in a van, 14 years ago today!!! I went to to hospital and they told me I probably still had a few days before anything would happen, and sent me home. Yeah, they were mistaken. So funny that this showed up in my TH-cam feed today.
Props to you Lisa! I wish I was as strong as you. My first was breached the minute I went into labor so we had to have an emergency C-Section. I did a V-BAC for my second and it was one of those "horror story" births where there was blood everywhere and I almost needed a blood transfusion - super scary for both my husband and I. So my 3rd was a scheduled C-section with all the bells and whistles. I swear I would have died in childbirth if it wasn't for modern medicine. I admire you so much! I am just one of those women who just needs "assistance" during birth. I still want to have more though (and I am still healthy enough for it according to my docs), but I am getting older so I am not sure if I will be able to. Anyways, I love hearing birth stories! And THIS is why I'm thankful for modern medicine. I think the 33% c-section rate is outlandish but for the 1% that would have actually died back in the day, modern medicine is amazing!
Medical intervention is amazing and life saving. MANY (way more than 1%) women (and babies) died as a result of childbirth back in the day. I am also someone who needs medical intervention, I can't have an unmedicated birth due to a heart condition and can't get an epidural or spinal due to spinal tumors, so my only option is a c-section under general anesthesia.
@Dalai Mami the high death rates were mostly infection related (mother or neonatal/perinatal baby). I can't speak for the US, but statistics available for the UK reflect this. I would speculate that it's a similar story elsewhere in the world, but I have not investigated those stats. My Grandad was born my caesarean in 1934, which I find fascinating - no indoor toilets, no electricity, no NHS, a very simple life yet my great grandmother was cut open! She had another child 12 years later, no miscarriages in between as far as we know.
Denial is most definitely a thing. Even when I was in the hospital with cervical gel on board I didn’t think I was going to have our very overdue baby girl. When I started labor still didn’t believe I was going to have her that day .... 45 minutes from start to finish which was the most weird experience. It’s almost as if you can’t quite believe it’s all over and it has only been an hour!! Very strange trying to get your head around it. Amazing story!! Thank you for sharing. Five months ago I had a planned unassisted birth at home! I am so glad that we had planned ahead and ordered everything we needed and didn't have the stress of running around and trying to get anywhere or scrounge for supplies. My labor was two hours and didn't even actively push (fetal ejection reflex)! A midwife wouldn't have had time to come if we had called one!

@Brittany P. no ma'am! They can't outlaw birth! Even if it isn't planned, sometimes it just happens! It's a shame when support isn't available or even forbidden. But no one can keep you from educating yourself and being confidently prepared. Sacred Arrows is a great birthing supplies company.

Magda Gerber says women than do 100 squats (gentle, not with weights if you haven't built up to it) a day give birth vaginally much easier. Loosens the hip flexor muscles :) (I wish I had done more, apologisies for the unsolicited advice, and good luck hun❤️)
Hopefully that's helpful for me, I spend most days squatting weeding and planting in the garden and this is my first pregnancy ☺️
@@lauren8627 you know, I followed your advice! I did all the squats I could the rest of my pregnancy, and had a great labor and delivery!! So I’m very grateful for your advice!!

Definitely listen to your body!!! With my first I had nurses and my doctor instructing me on when to push even when my body didn’t have the urge to and I tore and had to get stitches. With my second I had only pushed when my body felt the need to and didn’t tear and the process was much faster and less painful.
That's an awesome story! My second baby was born in the back of an ambulance... like you, I was 41 weeks and the labor progressed much faster than I expected. You are amazing to have done it unassisted!!

I had two homebirths after my first hospital birth that was a nightmare! I used a midwife but used an ob-gyn for additional prenatal care. Back then I was turned in to social services for child neglect because I felt it safer to have a baby at home than at a hospital. I'm so happy that times have changed and now it is fully acceptable to have a home birth. Fortunately, there were no charges filed from family services; just a home visit to check on the health of the baby. Both the baby and I were in good health. Looking forward to a healthy birth for you; it's so exciting waiting for your little babe.

Old video, but this showed up in my feed, and I had to listen! I just had my fifth unassisted home birth, and your story reminds me so much of my own, minus the drive! I started nursing my toddler again in the last three days of that pregnancy and had nursed him throughout that day, which did cause contractions. I'd spent the evening having them strongly enough for me to believe that it was real, but still early. Husband came home around 7 and blew up the birth pool, but I told him not to fill it. Told him he could go to sleep around 11pm (on the couch because I was huge and cosleeping with our 18 month old in our queen sized bed). I laid down in our bed and had a few contractions that I didn't time. During one of them, I literally told baby internally, "Please break my water." I also had a strong sense that I was talking to a boy at the point (before, I'd thought that we'd have a girl). I then felt two pops that I thought were my water breaking, but no water came out. A few minutes later, I got up to use the restroom, and when I sat down on the toilet, just a bit of water trickled out. I was still in denial that I was close or that it was my water. 😆 However, when I stood up, a strong contraction started and felt like it never stopped. It was probably somewhere around 11:10 or 11:15pm. I stumbled out of our room, calling for my husband, and got on all fours in the hallway. He shoved a bunch of towels under me, and I told him to fill the bathtub because we didn't have time to fill the pool (I felt like I at least needed to be touching water 😆). I managed to crawl to the bathtub, get in, and push baby boy out at 11:20pm. What a whirlwind!

I had my 4th in the front seat of our Altima June 15, 2018! He ended up having Down Syndrome, we didn’t know. 24 days in the NICU and 2 surgeries later, he came home with a colostomy bag which we had reversed in December 2018.
Down syndrome babies are the most precious gifts! I'm sure he brings alot of joy to your life now.

I had my 3rd in our kitchen about 90 minutes after the hospital sent me home. 🌸And our 5th ended up having Down Syndrome and being in the NICU for 80 days 💙💛
I had contractions every 3 minutes to start..3 hours from first contraction to birth. Loved your story..I actually made it to the hospital! ☺️

That's so awesome, I was a post term baby and would totally be willing to wait as long as baby needed, but am not ready for unassisted and midwives in my state are only licensed for term births, so 37-42 weeks. As soon as you hit 42, if you aren't in labor, they are supposed to transfer your care to an ob, so I'd be stuck with a hospital birth instead :(
I had my third in the car! And we only live 15 minutes away from the hospital🙈. 4-1-1 definitely doesn’t work for me. I went from having a mild contraction once every 40 minutes to back to back, nonstop contractions for twenty minutes before baby arrived!
I love this story! My friend had her son in a cop car. i never was lucky enough to get past 1cm. So at 19 I just thought I was going to be like my mom who had 6 easy births, barely made it to the hospital. I ended up going 24 hours, and had a c-section. I had never read about c-sections, never thought I would need one. Because you know my mom . :) I would of loved to experience pushing and all that. But I am grateful that I had 5 healthy c-section babies. I just love your family!

Very interesting story. I was hoping to have my 6th baby at home but luckily for me my labor stalled until I got to the hospital because she had a shoulder Dystocia birth. So glad everything went perfectly for your little one. Congratulations on #6

Great story! I'm due with our 5th at the end of this month. My first two were hospital births and they were just horrible experiences. With our first, they sent us home because i "sounded fine" during contractions and my husband almost delivered her on our bathroom floor. Third was with a midwife in the hospital and it was a world of difference. 4th was at a birth center with a midwife and it was the best experience I ever had! She listened when we told her that, I'm up talking/walking right before the baby comes out. I don't think she expected it to be quite as fast as what it was, but she listened! Our 5th, we are planning a home birth with the same midwife, though we all don't think she is making it in time. Our 4th was less than 2 hours including placenta and my placentas are always stubborn and worry them. So, I'm planning on delivering our 5th 😂🤣😂

I had one baby. All natural, by choice but…I’ve mentioned it before. I’ll just leave that here. Great story Lisa!
Lovely story Lisa. : ) Just wanted to add a little warning though, my sister has been a midwife for nearly 30 years and her main concerns during deliveries were from babies much more than a week overdue. They were often much harder to respond after birth, so, I know natural is lovely, but childbirth is also generally so safe today because of medical intervention. One of my 6 deliveries nearly ended in tragedy for us both and without the hospital neither of us would be here. I don't want to scare anyone, but think that we need to be balanced about natural v hospital cos at the end of the day we want a healthy baby not a "badge of natural childbirth" and no baby. (Don't want to appear a killjoy after such a lovely story, just want all those dear little babies on their way to be safe) : )
bobby smith I completely agree. My 3rd baby was almost born in our van. We barely made it to the hospital, and there were complications. (Shoulder dystocia) I very well could have died and he was born not breathing. Sadly, I tried to get admitted 8 hours previous to the birth and the hospital sent me home because the contractions weren’t regular enough. Ridiculous! My contractions never became “regular”. If we hadn’t made it to the hospital in time, my boy wouldn’t have survived. Whenever asked, I always encourage women to advocate for themselves and push the hospital staff to listen to them. Our bodies are all different, and we know our bodies best. Also, safety measures need to be made top priority if delivering naturally or at home. You never know what could go wrong. I never even heard of shoulder dystocia until it happened to me.
@@staciegulizia4144 Absolutely. When things go wrong, they go wrong fast! A 20 minute drive to hospital is going to end in disaster for those babies and mums. We have forgotten the mortality rate of childbirth during previous generations because it's so safe today. I personally never cared about anything other than a live healthy baby. Breaks my heart to think of the tragedy that can happen without the dedicated team available at hospital. It's quite natural to die too unfortunately. : (
I agree completely! It is impossible not to push ... when they decide to come, there is no stopping it! I am 6 months pregnant with my fifth and have had all normal deliveries without pain medication. You sound incredible though... all my labours, I found the pain to be excruciating... couldn't quite calm myself even though my brain kept reasoning with me.
Wow! Amazing story! I just was talking to my friend last week about how when you go past your due date it feels like you are just going to be pregnant forever. So surreal.
So strange about the overdue time - in germany we are very relaxed about it! My doctor said he can offer forms of induction after 40 weeks, but i dont have to take them, they are just offered as a relief for the mother but there is no medical need for it. After 41 weeks they would still wait until 42 weeks without pushing an induction, as long as baby has enough fluid and is doing fine. But they ask you to come in for constant check ups every 2 days once you are over 40 weeks. Everyone was totally relaxed. Baby came at exactly 41 weeks on its own and nobody was pressuring me for anything! Must be so stressful to have people around creating unnecessary pressure and fear. Absolutely no reason for it!

Idk if it is where you are located. It was like pulling teeth to get my dr to induce me in my small town. Lol small town country drs don't want to induce 😂
@@Christinalovespink91 I was induced with one of my babies at 40 weeks and 1 day and he wouldn't come out. I never knew that you could be induced and it not work. But yes I was sent home still pregnant. The next afternoon I went into labor on my own and had a 10 pound baby. Why he wasn't ready the day before ill never know
Canada has the same policy as Germany. I was 41 weeks exactly with my second and actually looking forward to my ultrasound the next day to see baby. I had a precipitous birth with my first (30 minutes after we arrived at the hospital) so I planned a home birth for my second, just so I wouldn’t have a car baby like Lisa. He arrived 4 hours after the first contraction and took four pushes to enter the world. Midwives and home births are amazing if your pregnancy allows for it.
My first two were in the hospital and my third was a home birth. Hands down the home birth was the best! It was also the easiest labor and delivery. Definitely the way to go if possible. ❤️

Ha, "from the sound of your voice..." when you are really good at relaxing through contractions -- no one thinks you're really in labor!
Also, the midwife was very particular to tell me that 4-1-1 is for first-time mamas. 3rd and any subsequent births, strong and regular-ish is good enough - you may not make it to 4-1-1. We actually had a very similar precipitous 3rd labor, although not in a van. Our easiest yet!

I am 65 and gave birth to four children, totally naturally, I studied the Lamaze method.my fourth was born 8 minutes after I made it to the hospital. My first had the cord wrapped around his neck and was taken with forceps while I was strapped down.
My 3rd was 42 weeks
And my only daughter was a breeze
You wouldn't believe how many people thought I was crazy 48 years ago when my first was born

My babies came fast and easy...and I am forever grateful! I had my children in 1976 and 1979, so they were hospital births...but with no meds of any kind. The popular laboring advice (at that time) came from the Lamaze controlled breathing method. My labors were so easy and quick that I never really got a chance to put the method to use :) I am positive your next birth will be smooth and easy. Blessings!
We have so much in common! My babies all came later than expected, too. Also, I've done Bradley Method for all my kids. The only reason is because God led me to a job at my local health co-op the year before I had my first child. I learned so much at that job, and the Bradley Method was my #1 take-away. It's been a huge blessing to us, and it set the tone for so much of my parenting journey.

What an amazing story! I had my first 3 babies at home and all of my labors were under 4 hours total, so I was so happy that I didn’t have to travel anywhere. With my 4th baby, I went into labor at 34 weeks and had to rush to the hospital because I was in denial that I was really in labor that early. We brought a bunch of towels just in case, but we were thankfully about 15 minutes from the hospital and had the baby an hour after arrival. I was so sad to have my 4th baby in the hospital after 3 home births, but they were so respectful and kind, they allowed me to catch my own baby and he still only had my milk while in the NICU for 5 days.
I taught the Bradley Method for 12 years. Good stuff. Congrats on baby number 6.
I can definitely identify with being a young, first-time mother, doing everything conventionally, and believing that the system has your (and your child's) best interest in mind.

Ah this was quite funny to watch and also brought back memories! I had my 2nd in the car, although we only have a small family car with 2 car seats in the back, it was not comfortable. My waters went and immediately I was pushing. I had the placenta in the car too, that was a bit messy. But an amazing memory. We have a rather funny selfie of the 3 of us just after she was born.
Oh and I was overdue with both, in the UK unless you are an older mother or have other problems they don't recommend induction till 41+5 ish.
Almost crying at 9:37 when you tell us that you didn‘t even had packed your hospital bag at 41 weeks. My intuition in my first pregnancy told me at around the 6th month to pack my bags and I ignored it. Then with 30 weeks I had to rush to the hospital with a baby that was way too small for its stage and almost needed a c-section in the middle of night. I wish I had such a relaxed and long pregnancy🥲

What i can say: with my second one, my contractions were always only around 40 Seconds long, but quite strong. After an hour and a distance of 5 minutes I woke up my partner, and two hours later our son was born (planned homebirth) So this 5:1:1 rule shouldn’t be taken to seriously. If your feeling tells you, it’s time to call your midwife or to go to the hospital: do it.its important to feel comfortable.
LOVED listening to your story. My third was also very fast: 28 Minutes after my first contraction I was holding my baby. Most intense half an hour of my life - but worth every second!
My mom got escorted back in the 1980's and thankfully made it to the hospital just in time. My dad ran out to the officer, too. I never heard if he had his hands up. :D I am laughing my way through this whole video!
I love your story! I would love a home birth but I have a high hemorrhage risk because of my 3rd and 4th babies so the doctors don't want to OK that, and I am OK with that. My 5th I was in denial. My husband pushed me to go in after my water broke at my parents and contractions were still 7 minutes apart. No birth is the same! I actually used the breast pump method with my 4th as I was 13 days over and the doctor suggested it. Had her 5 hours later, but those contractions were so weird. I am due with my 6th in a month. Congratulations on your pregnancy!
I almost had our 2nd child in the car. I had him shortly after we got to the hospital. My labor with him was precipitous too, not what I expected after a 29 hour labor with our daughter. Thank God we didn't get pulled over like you did!! What a wonderful story!!
Lol...I don't know how I stumbled upon this story but It brought back so many memories of my last four (of six) very quick, births. None of which even came close to this type of excitement of course. I did always trust my body and I was always a pretty quick labor. My husband would never let me wait cuz he was always afraid of this very situation. Very entertaining birth story! Our baby #3 was a planned homebirth. My second baby was my first natural birth at the birthing center and it took about four hours from when I woke up with the birthing waves to having her and so with number three I progressed quickly and the midwife actually didn’t make it so my husband caught him. I’m going to be having baby number four in about four weeks. And it will be a homebirth also.

Thanks for this story, car birth has always been one of my biggest fears! My first came less than an hour after arriving at the hospital and I was very “calm” so no one was getting in a hurry till it was really close. I think this is why the next three had to be induced…. But I’m not as nervous about a car birth now.

None of my 3 labors have followed a similar pattern and therefore I've had 1 accidental home birth and a second almost accidental home birth, but that time when I suddenly started pushing we called the ambulance and made it to the hospital (which was important to us because of a history of hemorrhaging). I am always so curious to know if a baby #4 would be another crazy birth story or if we'd make it to the hospital. Contraction timing means nothing, contraction intensity means nothing, labor length means nothing, dilation means nothing. When the baby is ready to come out someone had better be ready to catch and thankfully my husband is good at that. haha

My first was born 50 years ago 42 minutes after arriving at the hospital; he was 8 lb. 3.5 oz. They warned me to head in after the first pain next pregnancy. My sister then had her first (& only) in the car. I agree that if you have one that quickly it most likely was an easy birth. All four of mine were easy. His is quite a fascinating story, Lisa. Haha it is so true that it always seems the baby will never come and even when it's obvious labor is upon us, we still deny it! My babies also come quick. Out of 4 births, my longest was 5.5 hours active labor to baby being out. I'm expecting baby #5 with my due date less than 3 weeks away, planning a home birth like my last 3 were. Completely natural birth with no cervical checks or interventions is so amazing and I'm excited to experience it again. Blessings to your family!

Just wanting to clarify, some babies are indeed ready to be born before 40 weeks if they choose the earlier timing. I have 6, I had one 34 weeks, one 35 weeks, one 36 weeks, one 37 weeks, one 38 weeks and one 39 weeks. All came on their own time, none had issues with undeveloped lungs. Nice for the 34 weekend was just for size as he had inintrauterine growth issues. I definitely agree with not rushing things, but many babies are definitely ready before 40 weeks.

Hi, That was a very interesting and exciting birth story. In fact, it makes me think you should be writing a diary, and then write a book on your life. It would make a great movie. I'm very happy everything worked out for you and that your first baby boy was a quick but safe enough birth. You're obviously a strong woman and the fact you weren't upset about having a baby could have helped you to deliver quickly too. So many women get so anxious and upset that it tightens up muscles that need to relax. It probably has helped a lot of women who are contemplating home birth. Love your channel. 🎉❤

My cousin actually had her first baby in an ambulance. She thought she had alot of time to get to the hospital being her first child. They knew they would never make it in the car pretty quickly and ended up calling an ambulance lol. Everything went well and they had a healthy boy. Also it was the first baby the emt got to deliver.
