  • Today we are going back to basics and making a very simple but elegant box. Will do rabbet joints and a simple easy to make rabbet lid. This is an easy project you could do for cheap and it only take about 15-20 minutes. For the finish I will be using one of my favorite wood finishes, Oddies oil. #woodworking #woodworkingprojects #woodenbox

End grain doesn't have as much strength as face grain, but with the small size of the box it shouldn't pose any problems. The method of holding your small pieces in place by using small pieces of wood with double stick tape is really a great tip and I'll use it the next time I'm trying to sand or plane. Thanks for sharing!

@@woodworkingwithSkylerHi Skyler, most of the pieces were good, dense hardwood S4S; a couple pieces had cracks in them. Not too bad.

I never thought of an end grain box. Very clever. I like your design, it's simple and looks good!! I have lots of cut-off pieces that I can use for end grain boxes. Time to rummage through the scrap pile. Keep up the good work.

Definitely a nice looking box- I’ve never seen an end grain box before and yours has given me some ideas for some offcuts I’ve been holding on too. Also, this is the first video of yours I’ve watched and have subscribed. I’m looking forward to watching your previous videos.

Very beautiful box, interesting variation on the "standard" boxes you usually see.
You are an excellent woodworker. Truly enjoy watching you work.
While yes, the lee valley shooting jig is more expensive than it is worth, but it is still nice. Sometimes you just want to splurge and get something nice.

@@woodworkingwithSkylerI had surgery for carpal tunnel on my right hand. About 3 weeks ago. In about 2 months my left hand is going to have the same procedure. So I know what kind of pain your dealing with. People don't know what kind of pain that really is? Anyways thanks for letting us know. I now feel like I'm not alone! I hope you get to feeling better!

@@wesleyslemp4 hi Wesley! Thank you so much. Had the surgery both hands at same time. First week of recovery was pretty tough. Now I am all good but still can’t sand very well, don’t have much grip strength and hand get tired fast. Wish you a speedy recovery!

@@woodworkingwithSkyler oh wow! The doctor wouldn't do surgery in both of my hands! I wish that he would have. But he told me that I needed one hand to use. So that is his answer. But it is painful! I dread the second surgery! Thanks for the support. And positive encouraging words! I hope you soon recover as well!

Thank you. A few days ago I read that a bow pen (a drafting tool) could be used to apply glue to a wood joint in a very controlled way. I have not tried this yet, as I'm packing for a move. So I can't tell you that this works or not, thought I'd pass it on. Bow pen is very cheap.

Hi Skyler, Thank you for all your informative video’s. Question, in your end grain box video, what is the planning tool you are using to shave the top and bottom pieces @12:20 in the video? I’ve never seen one of those before.
