Vice-held End-grain Guide | Paul Sellers

  • It's true. Sometimes an idea should always be shared, and this is one I just had to tell you about.
    I know that shooting boards work well, but for end-grain planing with added security vice-held stock and the guide, you add solidity and comfort.
    This one has no equal. You don't have to believe me because in ten minutes and from scraps, you can make your own and check it out for yourself.
    You can find the drawing of this project here: paulsellers.co...

    Paul, you have changed my wood working forever! Last week I learned your planing strategy to true flat boards, this week I raced my father, me with a No4 smoother not even converted to a scrub plane, and a no7 jointer (i do not own a 5 1/2 but I am picking it up next week, a restored Stanley from the 50's), and I trued the board FASTER than he did doing all the passes over jointer and through thicknesser. Plus my board needs no further treatment, it is smooth as silk, he still needs to sand. Also, I did not contaminate the workshop with dust.
    You, Sir, are my hero. Thank You Paul!!!
    It is the first time I prove my old man wrong. Hand tools are not slow. And they are healthy to use. I felt great after all the work!!!

      This is why even for just doing finish carpentry, knowing how to use hand tools is a must in my book.

      @@aylbdrmadison1051 my friend, finish carpentry is an art. So many think it is a side line or something to not take seriously. I have so much respect for finish / trim carpenters. If this is your field, I hold much respect for you and your craft. And I agree, learning hand tools has so much improved my work even on table saw, band saw, jointer and planer, and taught me the limitations of machines. Above all, had work has helped keep my accuracy on point, and my shop and site work cleaner. It is earning me more work. I am deeply grateful to be keeping the art of hand tools alive as far as I can, it has been nothing but beneficial. My regards to You and Yours ❤️

      From a personal prospective, I think we spend more time making excuse that we don't have this or that. Where as someone like Paul could come in with a Wilko's tools set and build a masterpiece.

    What a deceptively simple jig, and one that will be essential for me. Due to my wrist problems, I have a very hard time using my shooting board comfortably. A jig for end grain that lets me plane normally is exactly what I need. I'm going to build one and am grateful to Paul for coming up with it.

    I’ve been having a lot of trouble with tear out on end grain. I’m very new but very determined to learn. After a frustrating morning I came across this video. Prepping my wood for the jig now, very excited to try it!

    • @emmysan93
      @emmysan93 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Update, it came out great and I learned a good bit about making things square with my jointer so I could make this jig as perfect as I could. I also took good care to make sure the holes were drilled properly and not to let the wood shift. I used clamps to hold it together while drilling but still monitored for shift. Thanks Paul for helping solve a real issue I’ve been facing on my new woodworking journey.

    Paul and team, I truly think this is perhaps your biggest single contribution to woodworking to date. I’ve been following you and your methods for close to 15 years now, and I can’t believe the ease with which I now can get PERFECT square edges. A shooting board never seemed up to the task, especially on stock thicker than 1/2”. I’m blown away by this jig. I don’t know what else to say!

      @SoundsToBlowYourMind ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The wood fibres will compress against the screw allowing the pieces / screws to move / twist very slightly when you tap with the mallet, especially when the threads of the screws are in softwood.

    Thanks @paul for this great idea. I already build your version of shooting board, which I love and works very well. But being a beginner, it sometimes takes time for me using that and does make my hands sore if I have multiple boards to square.
    I made this new jig and absolutely love it! The only difference is that I laminated 2 3/4" plywood because I needed to square thicker stock. It worked perfectly but the jig became a bit heavy for me to hold and clamp. So,I quickly made another one that still used 2 laminated plywood but I used slightly less wide stock and just kept this one right handed(didn't add the left side 2x4 cross member). This made the jig light and I could still square thicker stock.
    The message here is that you have given such an awesome but simple idea that I can quickly make 2-3 different versions of this jig for my different needs! Absolutely awesome! Thank you again paul!!!

  • @katiedotson704
    @katiedotson704 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is nothing better than a KISS tool or jig that makes those small but all important details of any project easier and consistently to accomplish. This jig is as cheap as they come and can be made to suit your needs. If perchance you have a project that requires a number of pieces with the end grain cut to a different angle, this jig could be made to accommodate that.

Simpler and much more compact than my shooting board, the vice will hold the pieces better than I can by hand, plus I don't have to clear the top of my bench of tools that would have been in the way. May also save people buying a low angle plane. Win, win, win, win, win tool. Congratulations, Paul, very well done.

    I haven't managed to get the hang of my shooting board, sometimes it is a struggle to get any shaving at all. I often give up and plane in my vise, though that approach can give inaccurate results, plus there's no support to prevent blowing out fibres on the edge. This jig solves both problems, and should be a worthwhile build for sure.

    I made one of these and it works perfectly except..., I wish that I had added edge banding to the plywood because I get tear out where the ply's are uneven!
    I will fix it by cutting out that corner out and gluing in a piece of hardwood, then plane the top and chisel down the side so it is flush.

  • @PeterHrynkow1
    @PeterHrynkow1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Does the platform/guide piece eventually wear down and get out square? How does the plane stop taking shavings once the work piece is flush with the platform?

    • @franky47
      @franky47 ปีที่แล้ว

      That was my thought exactly. Also it seems like traditional shooting boards (which don't risk going out of square as the plane doesn't chew the track side) are much easier and quicker to micro-adjust (advancing the board to sneak up on the desired length).

    • @Paul.Sellers
      @Paul.Sellers  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's hard to say what the compromise level is. This is not intended to replace a shooting board per se. So here is my answer. I planed up 40 ends of pieces from 4" to 8" wide in oak, maple and poplar and it was still perfectly square. Now if it goes a shaving out of square it only takes another shaving to square it. By this alone, it's worth the risk, surely. I wouldn't have put this out there if there was a serious issue and in five minutes of making you can just try it without having more than a few scraps of wood in it.

    • @PeterHrynkow1
      @PeterHrynkow1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, Paul. I’ll give this a go. I’ve struggled with a shooting board and find using a plane on its side quite awkward. This solution seems like a good compromise, especially if it can be remade quickly and easily when the platform wears out. Thank you for sharing this.

    • @Paul.Sellers
      @Paul.Sellers  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a bit like one of those invented problems that don't really exist. Yes you need to be careful but you do anyway so nothing new there and even if it did go out of square after a hundred end plane tasks the gain is like a million to one so there is no issue @@franky47
