Slieve Snaght & Lough Slievesnaght, Donegal - Irish Peaks

  • This hike was inspired by the route presented in the Irish Peaks book from Mountaineering Ireland. I decided to overnight in the tent at Lough Slievesnaght rather than complete the walk in one day. I love camping at mountain lakes and was excited to see what this lake would be like, it didn't disappoint. My route started from below Dunlewey Church and took me to higher ground at Maumbeg and continuing to Drumnalifferny Mountain. I descended again to Lough Slievesnaght and pitched my tent before the final climb to Slieve Snaght to catch the sunset. Stunning views were provided throughout - the weather at last worked in my favour on a visit to this part of Donegal!
    NOTE - Although I mentioned that my Exped SynMat failed on me recently, this was after many years use so it had more than served me well. I’ve been very satisfied with both Exped mattresses that I’ve owned 👍

    Catching up on some older videos that TH-cam has recommended on a lazy Sunday morning. I watch a lot of UK channels and get envious of the Lakes and Scottish mountains but this video (as well as Gerry McVeigh's recent one in the same location) have reminded me of the beautiful mountains I have right here on my own doorstep. Thanks for sharing this great trip 👍🙂

      We were almost into the lough before we saw it, that's how horrible the weather was. Very lucky our leader was good on the map and compass, cos it's hairy country up there in mist.
      Following day we had glorious clear skies up on Dooish, and it's satellites.
      I would really love to try the wild camping, think I'll give it a go this summer, try and ease myself into it!

      @@pipandbenji oh Lord - that sounds nasty to have such little visibility, that terrain is challenging even when you can see everything!! I hope you go for it with the wild camping - that’s the highlight for me, the hiking is secondary to the enjoyment I get from being in a tent - I love it!! Not sure what it is - maybe the simplicity of a life with all you need on your back. I only got into hiking as I wanted to go out in a tent on my own. I did a Mountain Skills course to learn how to read a map so that I could go wild camping - I was the odd ball at the course who answered ‘why do you want to learn how to navigate’ with a reponse ‘caus I want to go out in a tent’. I honestly had no experience with hiking at all, little did I know what was to come!

    • @pipandbenji
      @pipandbenji 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MiriamKennedy I'm hillwalking a long time, have done the MS1, and comfortable with navigating, but when in a group, its always easier to be the 'zombie ' navigator at the back lol. Joking aside, especially when you walk solo, it's definitely worth having nav skills. Next skills will be tent skills!!!!

Lovely aerial views of those little loughs (that I have walked past often) and Lough Slieve Snaght up high and a fantastic view over to Errigal and the rest of the Derryveaghs from the summit👍 it is a beautifully wild and remote place to camp. A great video Miriam. I like MSR too. My Summer backpacking tent is an Elixer & I am very fond of it. My most comfortable, warmest tent came from Lidl. Its a tad too heavy for one person & only bring it car camping trips or back packing with my son. It was €40 if memory. The lining allows zero light in.

    • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Colman - MSR is definitely a quality brand. I was always eyeing up the Hubba Hubba before I bought it, I eventually took the plunge and I wasn’t disappointed. I don’t think it deserves to be 4 times the price of the Vango Zenith that I previously had but I still love it. The MSR Access 2 hasn’t disappointed for colder weather camping now too. Pricey but quality tents. I think the Elixir is similar to the Access with less mesh than the Hubba Hubba and is a bit lighter than the Elixir too. Haven’t tried the Lidl tent but for car camping it sounds like you got a definite winner!! I do like being in a tent 😊 Nice to hear from you!

    So well done. Thank you for the exceptional footage and music. You've given us a marvelous view of the area. I live in Montana and we have bears and moose in the mountains. Sometimes that doesn't work out so well to poke around in their territory. 😃

      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Kriss for watching the video of this little adventure! Really glad you enjoyed it 🤗 It’s a beautiful part of our country and great for me to be able to spend some time there alone with the mountains. Wow - thanks for letting me know about the moose and bears, it sounds so exotic to our landscape yet obviously has its challenges for hiking a d camping that we don’t encounter! My only genuine danger seems to be the risk of me falling and injuring myself and being unable to get help - I tend to do my trips alone so it’s obviously a risk. Im getting better at giving my planned route to friends before I head off. I’m pretty cautious I think but accidents of course can happen, fingers crossed I continue to be safe 🤞 Friends and family imagine I should be afraid of murderers or rapists when I’m out in the mountains - I feel very safe in that department while out camping, not the typical territory for threatening people! Thanks again for watching and getting in touch!! 🤗

      Hah! Thanks Shay 😊 That one was on the cards for months, I had tried twice before and it didn’t work out - confined to the tent due to midges (couldn’t even cook!) and the second time it poured non stop rain which hadn’t been forecasted. Yes I became a gear addict it seems before I even started wild camping - I was looking at gear and not even knowing that I would eventually be following through and buying stuff 🤷‍♀️ The disease crept up on me and was silently reprogramming my brain towards increased credit card spending tendencies without me even knowing it - I was taken over and it hasn’t left. Aw thank you so much Mark, that’s really nice to hear! I hope you take a step to wild camping - it sounds like you definitely want to!! I spent a long time looking at camping and backpacking gear before it fully dawned on me that I wanted to do it. When I finally joined the dots and realised that I wanted to do it, I took my time getting gear together etc and then went to a spot that was pretty familiar to me. It was a place in Wicklow that I had walked and often fantasised about being in a tent - I knew that place had to be my first spot! I wasn’t even into hiking at this stage, it wasn’t something I did. I truly haven’t stopped since then, I wasn’t sure if I’d like it but I had a grin from ear to ear and that feeling hasn’t changed when I go out in the tent. I’ve been doing it about 5 years now and its only in the last 2 years or so that I’ve started exploring more of Ireland in a tent. Being out in a tent is the most content that I feel in life. The freedom and simplicity of it seems to satisfy my soul!! It could be like that for you too, I don’t know but it sounds like theres an urge to try it so I hope you do!! 🤞 Thanks!

      Cheers Brian! I think it’s mainly that I’ve had no experience with social media before this and it has taken me quite a while to get my head around interacting in a virtual world with people I’ll quite likely never meet. In two weeks I’ve gone from saying nothing to telling you about my camping gear! Two weeks ago I would have seen that as ‘selling out’ or playing to the crowd or performing and something in me really isn’t overly comfy with it yet there is another part of me that sees it as play and having some fun! Who knew putting videos on TH-cam would lead to inner exploration 🙃 I hope you enjoy the Irish Peaks book - I think it’s beautiful (and a great Christmas present for anyone who you know that is into hiking!!)

    Yes, I would say you have some decent enough footage there, Miriam :) :). Oh my God how much I love the rocky Donegal hills. I only managed the Aghlas when I was there for my first walking trip in 2019 as it was a very, very wet week so I was confined to mostly coastal walking, but obviously no complaints there as it's also great, and manageable even in poor weather. You got a magnificent sunset there again and the drone captured the grandeur. The music made it feel like we were looking at Rohan. I half expected the horsemen to appear in the valley :). Another stunning video, thank you. I have recently received the Ireland's Peaks book myself, so looking forward to whiling away winter evenings plotting future routes, if I'm spared!

      Thanks Jim!! I truly never know what its like until I start putting it together and even then its hard to not succumb to the inner critic who says it's crap. The sunset was amazing - the whole trip was, I adore the feeling of wild camping with no one around and the simplicity of my bag on my back moving from A to B. Glad the music worked ok - I liked it when I heard it first but was a bit nervous to use it - bit too showy for my reserved side but another side of me liked it! I'm really enjoying the Irish Peaks book too - its such a beautifully assembled book. Happy plotting and thanks for your comment! I appreciate it 👍

    I wonder if the drone is still on that ledge, dam shame mind. I cannot believe how much this looks like the Lake District, so a real enjoyable watch for me, cannot also believe why you have not done more taking to the camera before, you are a natural! The music really suited the drama of the landscape another enjoyable bonus to he video. Lovely looking tent and an excellent overview of the tent as well. Sounds a real warm bag and sleep mat, heavy but worth it for the comfort and warmth. Nice memorial on the summit and 'what a view', gorgeous 360 and drone footage and I know exactly how you feel at 12.16! Food looked nourishing, especially the sausages - yum! That was a little impromptu introduction to my tent and gear - not something I could ever have imagined I’d be speaking to camera about, speaking in videos is a really new thing for me, so forgive my crap overview of the gear! Nothing professional about my gear overview when compared to your detailed overviews 😂 I’m using a Mini 2 drone - I lost a Mavic Mini up on Dunlewey Church and upgraded to the Mini 2 when replacing it. Not great in strong wind but it can handle a decent amount in fairness so I’m happy with it. • @MiriamKennedy
      @MiriamKennedy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Jason - yeah the MSR tents are great. They are expensive, but I’m using my Hubba Hubba five years now and there’s no sign of it failing in anyway, as long as I don’t get storm damage on my Access 2 (no aspirations to be out in a storm anyway!), I’m sure I’ll get many more years out of it! Great quality, great weight but expensive!! I like looking at gear and hearing what others use too. I just never saw myself as one of those people who would be talking about my gear to faceless people on the internet!! As far as the talking - I spoke three times in this video, on the first clip I used my GoPro so I couldn’t see myself and the next 2 times I used my phone so at least I could see myself and that helped me be a bit more relaxed I realise! The talking went fine in this video - the editing was pretty cringy though and where the inner critic begins it’s attack! I’ll find my way - Im generally quite a reserved person, I’m not terribly shy but I just don’t really speak for the sake of it so it’ll be a bit of an inner exploration as to finding my way with it!! Im still in shock that I did it though - I don’t even tell my friends about it, I’m a bit embarrassed!! There’s something about ‘performing’ or deliberately drawing attention to myself by speaking on video and posting it that is very strange to me and some judgment that I have that it’s wrong to do even 🤷‍♀️ An unconscious belief that runs the show a lot…that’s good for me to see! The feedback and encouragement from the TH-cam community has been lovely with me talking a bit which is nice!! Cheers Jason for your support 🤗

      Ah thanks Colin!! The worst bit was that message on my screen 'too restricted to take off'....I eventually got the message and stopped trying! I have to admit losing the second drone was easier than the first - I got a bit more hardened it seems! 😉The first drone was lost after I only had it about 6 weeks and there is a very good chance that it wasn't my fault. The Mavic Mini is known to have a controller problem and I may have succumbed to one of those problems. I was flying with no obstacle near the drone and it lost connection and the RTH wouldn't work. Later on when I viewed its flight path it made no sense to me at all. The first loss just frightened me to think I've no idea what I did to cause the problem so whats the point in getting another one. After a few weeks I realised I had been having so much fun so I took the plunge again. I got over a year out of the second one which wasn't too bad I think. The second lost drone was definitely my fault though. On this trip I felt like my nerve was gone with the drone - thankfully there was no wind at all but after nearly losing it 2 weeks ago in Wicklow the adrenalin was definitely pumping every time!! Yeah - even 2 weeks ago I could never have imagined I'd be posting a video and telling viewers about my camping gear....its done now - never again 😀
