How do I load my Brompton when touring?

- This video provides an overview of the bags I use when touring with my Brompton together with the sleeping and cooking systems I use when wild camping. A full listing of the gear I currently use when hiking, biking & wild camping is provided below:
Bags:
- Brompton Rack Bag (Rear bag)
- Brompton Metro Messenger Bag (Front Bag)
- 3 x AMACOAM Webbing 25mm Nylon Heavy Duty Straps
- Brompton Borough Waterproof Bag, Large - (New Front Bag, purchased Oct 2022)
- Osprey Kyte 46 (women's backpack used when wild camping)
- Osprey Tempest 30 (women's backpack used on day hikes)
- OMM Chest Pod (used when carrying drone with backpack)
- Dry Bags (Exped and Osprey bags of varying sizes)
Tents:
- MSR Hubba Hubba (2 person, 3 season tent)
- MSR Access 2 (2 person, not a true 4 season tent but used in colder weather)
- Sea to Summit Alto TR1 (1 person, 3 season - RIP, died on me in August 2022)
- Hilleberg Akto (1 person, 4 season) - bought since recording this video
- Durston X-Mid 1 (1 person lightweight tent)
- Separate footprints used for all tents

You've cost me a fortune. I've been inspired by your videos and just bought a Brompton and am intending using it for touring.

Hello Miriam, thanks for a set up video. Brompton touring is a bit finicky. I'm struggling with needing more than a front bag. HaHa, I had visions of minimalist bike packing- but I can't work that out with camping gear. Anyway, you're on my mind.

Hope you find a compromise that works for you 🤞 For the short trips that I do, my gear weight doesn’t bother me too much, so what if I need to walk!! 😂 All going ok this side - 10 days post surgery today and feeling like I’m getting a little better, thanks for your love and healing energy, very gratefully received 🙏

The absolute best pillow for me is is to use a dry bag, fill it with my down jacket and close the bag leaving a little air inside (I'm particular about how much air!). I then turn a long sleeved merino top inside out and use it has a pillow cover over the dry bag. Any stains from drooling in the night stay on the inside of the garment - haha!
😂 Good to know - I haven’t tried it in fairness, but I will try it out and let you know how I get on!! 🤩
I use that same trekology pillow and it's actually very good
@@LauradeVasconcelos good to know! I changed mine to the Trekology Aluft Pro a little while ago which I'm preferring a bit more - found it for €15 on Amazon so I splurged - you can even wash its little cover 🙂

Oooohhhh - I do hope it brings you a decent portion of the pleasure I get from cycling mine 🤗 It still feels like such a novelty every time I take it out, even after about 15 years of cycling mine 😍
I love the idea that you don’t get wrapped up in buying new gear….I am the same way as you described yourself, ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!” I think too many people spend WAY TOO MUCH TIME AND MONEY constantly “updating equipment, again, I am from the “old school” use what you have, spend more time exploring and enjoying the experience rather than changing gear because it claims to be better. This just me though.
Thanks Chuck! I get attached to my gear also and take lots of pleasure in bringing it out to play when I can 😊 Like you I find the constant gear changes very off putting too…I do like looking at gear and buying new things in fairness but the endless updating of gear is pretty sickening to me 🫣

Thanks for the hard work in putting this great review together. Very helpful. One thing I learn as I get older is to buy quality stuff. Its expensive but lasts and does the job. PS just back from Inishmor. Cycle out of Rossaveal yesterday morning was the worst. We had to walk with bikes for a while as wind and rain so bad. Anyway it was great. Keep up the vids. Really enjoying them.

I love the fact you’re the owner of multiple tents, and yes a two person tent is luxury after a week or two in a one person. Imagine how I felt when I set up the 4M canvas bell tent last winter, a palace complete with heat :)

Miriam, looks like a cool balanced set up for the Brompton👍 and it can be used for work and the supermarket😊 Simple is good and sticking with what works👍 A lovely backdrop in Doo Lough to hear about your camping gear. Nothing wrong with a bit of luxury whenever you can get it😊 and less weight for the more challenging trips makes sense. It's all about the tea👍😊

I love the colour of the MSR tents, I almost bought an Elixir 2 a few weeks back but it sold before I got the chance. The hubba hubba is great for the weight. Your tea cup looks class with the little rubber bits on the handle. That's handy because they can get fierce hot. I'd 100% lose that sip thing. Im delighted you sold on the Lanshan, wise choice 😄
Your views on camping are brilliant, the best part for me is sitting alone at my tent with a cup of tea and just looking out across the views. Thank you for the peak at your gear, you have a lovely setup 👍

I bought a two pack of those ‘hot lips’ and somehow I still have both of them 😂 Yeah the sitting in or at my tent and taking it all in really is my ‘happy place’…I remember when I recorded that piece, I hadn’t realised I was going to get into that and was kicking myself as I would have liked to at least have first thought about trying to explain why I really do these trips and what I get out of them! Words will always fail me for that but hopefully some nice shots try to capture what I couldn’t possibly explain. I know you get the same kick from camping 😊

@@MiriamKennedy I was driving through the area on Saturday 4 June. I was heading to Roonagh Pier for the ferry over to Clare Island. I saw someone with a Brompton bike down by the lakeshore at Doolough. It was early in the morning around 9 am. I wonder was it yourself?

You have the most important and valuable piece of gear anyway 😎 It’s all the gear that I use when going out with my tent that I then realised I could bring it on the bike too…I got bitten by the bug of camping so my shopping for gear commenced!! Nice set up Miriam 👌very organised as gear should be👍🏻, like to see what others use and recommend, cant beat the Thermarest mats, top quality. Jetboil is my favourite cooking system, apart from all my cast iron ware and a campfire😁, great video as always🤙

It could handle the Jetboil for sure...what limited things you'd be cooking with your Jetboil though Ben....that's just wrong 😒 Yep I've loved my Thermarest and Exped mattresses to date, both winning brands for me! @@MiriamKennedy the jetboil was mainly for boil in the bags when I was able to do a lot of hiking, but its still the quickest way for a cup of coffee 👌, liked your hotlips😁, maybe invest in some. Donegal trip is still to come at some point, have a new grill to test out in the Mournes next🤙, can't wait to see where your end up next🤔👌

Really useful info. Thank you. I'm still planning my maiden Brompton tour and trying to figure out best bag options. I'm reluctant to invest in a large front bag. I know the Brompton is designed to be front loaded but I already have the Borough basket bag for shopping and in a headwind it's a pain. It's hard to avoid headwinds this summer! Thanks for these videos. Really enjoying them.
Thanks Richella - I reckon go for it with what you have and you’ll figure out what’ll work best as you along! No need to reinvest initially - do a short trip with what you have and you might be surprised that the Borough Basket can meet your needs. My front bag is only 13L but it’s still great to have. I had initially strapped a 10L bag to the front on my maiden trip and it worked fine. My rear bag is carrying the most load and that also works fine for me - I don’t find any imbalance with it, our Bromptons are very strong and stable 😊 Happy planning and I’d love to hear how you get on if you go for it 👍😎

Cheers Joe! I think your plan sounds like a good one 👍 To be honest my 3 gears and little wheels haven’t been an issue yet, I’m taking my time and not trying to get anywhere too quickly! Oh the bike carrying the load is so much easier than the back. I can go far more luxurious with the bike too and we can get shop stops along the way for treats that the mountains fail to give us!! 🤩 That being said - I’ll always want the solitude of the hills and make sure I get plenty of mountain wild camping fixes 😊

Love the fact that one of the reasons you head out is because you just enjoy spending time in a tent - I'm exactly the same, for me it's all about the tents and the tent time. I don't mind the dark nights too much because I love being in my tent. TFS :)

@@MiriamKennedy Ah but when it's lashing down with rain outside, when the winds are mental and the ground is cold, wet and muddy.....this is where the en-suite comes in handy - have a TH-cam search for 'how to pee in your tent' and a vid I did a while ago should pop up. You know my vids, quirky and informative haha. Plus I use my container to carry stuff in before it turns into a potty so it's not a wasted space 🙄🤣
nice one. Good to see someone NOT suffering with the bigger, better consumer bug!! Nearly cracked up at the "Hot Lips" though!!!🤣🤣🤣 A couple of small layers of good old duct tape does the job too! Keep on making the best laid back camping vids on TH-cam!

Hey Mark - not the kind of video I ever thought I’d make (talking about gear) but it was good to do it in the end! My few words on ‘tent time’ just came out and I was kicking myself as the words were coming out of my mouth as I would have preferred to have put some thought into those words as they didn’t touch what it really means to me! Hi Colman - thanks for your message! I’d totally recommend the Thermarest Neoair XTherm - you can use it year round and you’ll be toasty warm with it 😊 You might need to get it online as stocks could be limited in shops - check the size also, I went with the Large. Other Thermarest mattresses will be lighter but for a mattress that will serve your year round needs it’s super! Expensive but worth every penny of it if you’ll use it a few times a year. I haven’t used the Lidl or Aldi mattresses in fairness but I’m a bit of a mattress snob as I place so much importance on being warm and comfy. ⛺️ I’m just waking up on mine right now - out in Connemara again in the tent 🤗

@@cpppq oooppppssss!! When you camp pretty often, brands such as Thermarest and Exped are a no brainer for low weight, small pack size and fab insulation. An investment that’ll last for years (hopefully!)…they are expensive but an important piece of kit that adds to the enjoyment 😉 Did you turn on your heel out of Cotswold Outdoors??
PS. I Really relate to your comment that the greatest meaning from your hill climbing wild country trekking is in the camping. For me belting up that tent in a bit of wind and rain as the night closes in, and feeling the rest and security within, is like making the summit of mountains that are beyond me. Thanks for posting.

When I looked back at it - I wished I’d known I was going to say something about my love of being in an tent as I didn’t do it justice - it’s possibly beyond words for me anyway. That’s what the videos are mainly about…the journey to the magical feeling that comes from being alone in a tent in the wild!! 😊

Reading the list seems a lot to fit on the Brompton. I suspect you've tried a few variations to get it all on the bike.
I so miss sleeping in a tent having had to pack up due to advancing years. A need to get up to pee a couple of times in the night plus the increasing difficulty of getting off the floor makes sleeping an ordeal.
No matter, this doesn't stop me getting out and enjoying my rides through the countryside.
Thanks for sharing the video, I think explaining how it's done encourages more people to get out of the car and enjoy the nature all around us.
Cheers Colin - I manage to sqeeeze it all in and that’s including the camera stuff when it comes with me 😊 The backdrop is Doo Lough and it certainly was a beautiful place to camp. Sorry to hear that you haven’t been able to get out in a tent lately - I can imagine that must be a pain (but not as bothersome as trying to get up off the floor again!) I had driven this particular area a few times and it was so different to be on a bike rather than the car, you are very right there!! That would be great if the video helped inspire anyone to get out, not that I started posting videos with that intention at all - I really just wanted to remind myself of the feeling of being out there. So easily forgotten and a little video definitely helps jog the memory of that special feeling 😊 Thanks for your message and may you have some lovely cycles over the next while! Hi there - when the Brompton is folded it fits into the porch. I posted a video when I travelled to Inis Meáin and you’ll see the tent in the porch on that one 😉 Sorry it’s hard to remember to include everything - it was a spur of the moment idea to do a video like that while I was in that location on a trip. One thing I'd add would be a pot cozy. Foil insulated bubble wrap and silver tape, cheap to make, light to carry and keeps stuff hot in the pot for ages.
Hi Malcolm - I’ve had no need for a pot cozy up until now as I eat my food straight away 😊 However, I’ve just bought myself a dehydrator so that I can dehydrate my own food at home to bring with me - I just did my first batch yesterday! When rehydrating this food I will definitely be using a pot cozy 😊 I bought myself a Thermo Pocket Food Pouch from Gram Counter (very cheap) and my 1L pot fits into this. I haven’t used it yet but hopefully I’ll get to use it this weekend if I go out with the tent 🤞 Thanks for watching and your message…I’ll be a pot cozy convert soon no doubt 😉

Why the Brompton folding bike: it may have something to do with having studied engineering, some part of me was always drawn to their look and appreciated the wonderful design and quality of their look. Anytime I saw one on the roads I was always intrigued by them and wondered about having one - I eventually treated myself! I don’t know what other fold ups are like to cycle but the Brompton is great fun!
Why a folding bike: I live in suburbia about 10km from the city centre and I liked the practicality of being able to throw the bike in my car and park in free parking spaces and bring a bike the rest of the way. This was my initial reason. When I got the idea of touring - the fold up proved very handy for putting on public transport like buses! Trains will take any size bikes but I don’t think a bus would.
Why do I need a compact bike: I don’t need one, but it’s very cool to have!! I don’t own any other bike - it meets my needs. I enjoy going at a slower pace with my small wheels and 3 gears too. No rush!!
Other benefits of the folding bike: Storage at home, It folds up and is hidden away from view in a closet. Another knock on effect is that people are fascinated by it and regularly stop me in the supermarket etc to admire it and ask me about it! Being able to fold it and store it in the porch of my tent when camping is pretty special too 👍
Any drawbacks: apart from the obvious in climbing steep hills, but again it hasn’t felt like a drawback as I know it’s limitations and it doesn’t bother me. I’m pretty intrigued to see what it’s capable of! I suppose certain terrain would be risky and I need to be careful about my route but again there’s plenty for me to explore without having to go off road!
@@MiriamKennedy Thank you for your thoughtful response. I am considering a folding bike (have been for years) and your input helps my decision. It would really open up travel by bus to my destinations. Here in Arizona local buses (commuter) have exterior racks for bikes but long distance travel buses here, like in Ireland, have no space for full size bikes. I'm working at being completely car independent so a folder might help in that way. Thanks so much!
@@PeterPeadar it took me years before I got one too! I wasn’t planning a full move from a car though. You’re the second person I’ve come across that has mentioned doing that, the other person has done it! Best of luck with it if you go for it! I’m still too attached to my car for now…accessing the mountains would be very difficult for me with no car as public transport doesn’t goes near them. That’s possibly a lame excuse to environmentalists I know 🤷♀️

I always say ,If its not broke dont fix it. That was a good breakdown of the gear that works for you, the time youve had it is testament to its durability. The Thermarest and MSR brands have the reputation of quality and endurance and I like both brands. I actually was curious how you did the load out on the posh tarts bike, that was interesting and informative, it seems to work just fine , If i borrow the brothers Brompton I would need a pannier just for the wine and grub alone. Not even going to mention the hot lips...A well presented gear review Miriam. Colin

Thanks Jonathan - you’ll be kept warm with the Neoair Xtherm in all seasons and the large size makes for a very comfortable size 👍 Mine has just developed a slow leak and I couldn’t find the leak and I’ve sent it back to Thermarest in Cork to fix it - I think they have a 2 year warranty. I’m very happy with mine, decent thickness and seemingly durable material (despite my recent leak!)

I am a walker, hiker, stealth camper and I am the proud owner of a Hilleberg Alto, second hand obvs.which is my one true love. I've recently being thinking of bike packing, especially abroad but was quite stressed by whole idea of loading my bike onto trains and/or planes and , in a delicious coincidence, managed to score a little Tern folding bike. That's how I came across you and the magnificent Susanna. My question is, I was going to buy a Lanshan 1, for light summer camping but I noticed you said you didn't get on with it and I wondered why? I also hike for the pleasure of being in my tent, there's something about being almost outside but also enclosed that is impossible to beat, tho I am often a door open camper. I've never come across anyone who felt the same so 3 cheers to you! M

Ok - on the Lanshan…I got the Lanshan Pro and I absolutely hated it 🤭 To be honest, my main difficulty was that I love my Rab sleeping bag so much that I was terrified of it getting destroyed by condensation. The single skin was definitely not for me - the normal Lanshan with an inner and outer would have worked better for me! A Lanshan 2 would appeal to me more than a Lanshan 1 - you’ll have to decide what might work for you though…trade offs with then both! So it’s just the Pro that my real problem is with 😉 I hope you do go for it with your fold up bike - it’s so much fun!! Thanks again for your message - I really appreciate it 😎
It is the Pro I'm after... I took my Hilleberg on a walk on Fisherman's trail, Portugal and it was so hot and also hard walking cos of sandy trails, I thought I could go lighter and deal with the condensation. 870 g is a tempting weight. Tho I also love my sleeping bag from PHD designs,( bought in a sale after selling a kidney) so I understand your caution. I may well wait til next summer. Ta for replying. @@MiriamKennedy
@@MsMStitch I assume you’ve checked out the normal Lanshan 1 or 2 also - pretty light no doubt! I ended up buying an X-Mid 1 for my lightweight tent this year and I’m very happy with it - very light, 2 skin but a pain if you’re based outside the US as we get hit with customs charges. I also bought their separate poles to use when bukepacking…I realise you may need to sell your second kidney though!

Thanks Miriam, I got a Thermarest in the wide size, much better than the narrow IMO. Can’t remember which model it is but it’s not the super warm one, instead I use an ex US army foam mat underneath, the US one was the widest I could find and fits perfect with the Thermarest.....beautiful scenery as always 🥰🤙
The wide mattress’s are so much more comfy - to have one of my arms on the cold ground is just silly…the 3/4 length ones are another turn off 🫢 Great that you have something that’s working well for you!! I completely get the 'in a tent' thing, though I've never been able to work out why, but falling asleep to the gentle sounds of the breeze whispering past the tent and tiniest bit of rain ticking its syncopated rhythm against the tent walls makes me feel soooooo safe and dreamy. As for gear lists, I tell people to use what they have already and replace something if its not working for them, but they'll only know if they get out 'there' and try it first. Love your relaxed style and warmth that comes across in your videos. 🙏🏽 x
Thanks very much Bokooda - I caught myself off guard when I started into a monologue of why I love camping!! 🤦♀️ Not that I wouldn’t want to share that, but I just wasn’t prepared. The best way I can describe it is that there is nothing in life that brings me the contentment that I feel when I’m in a tent - like you, I don’t really know why that is, but I literally feel a level of contentment and a sense of being ‘at home’ and a knowingness that there is nothing else in life that I should be doing when I’m out in my tent. Nothing else in life has ever brought me to that special place, it’s not that I walk around miserable when not in a tent but I’m just transported to a very special place in myself when I do it - so I do it a lot!! That feeling has never changed from the first time I did it and I feel immense gratitude to have found such an amazing place within myself. I feel like I’m truly being myself - that all is right…so very special and I could have easily missed it and not realised what it had to offer! I’ve another long winded story of how I got into it…it literally felt like a divine push - without hopefully sounding too airy fairy!! Anyway, I’m glad I went for it 😊 Sounds like it’s also a very special experience for you too…the videos started off for me so that I could remember the feeling I get when I’m off in my tent. @@MiriamKennedy I have that feeling too, I put it down to those times of innocent playfulness when we made a tent in the front room with a sheet between two chairs, It was a special enclosure. Then later, when older, out in the fields in a tent under the stars, I felt that magic again. Thank you for the great and informative videos, beautifully filmed, so well crafted. I particularly loved your tour of Connemara , I lived in Oughterard for a while, it was good to see familiar places. One amongst many favourite places in Connemara is Coral strand, Carraroe.

I think the sleeping on an air mattress is like sleeping on an inflated crisp packet. I replaced my Neo Air with the Z Lite and sleep much better 😁. Nice to see you Miriam!

Hi Miriam! I've been away backpacking in Nepal and Thailand a few month's so only just got round to watching your latest video's! I kept getting notifications, but decided I'd prefer to watch them in the comfort of my armchair, on the TV, rather than on my phone. Lol! 😂 Interesting seeing what gear you use, and I bought a new Brompton 6L in February as the shop was closing and gave me an incredible deal! They also threw in a Messenger bag and Brompton toolkit, so it was a no brainer! When I first started watching this vid I got quite excited too cos I thought I recognised the view behind you! 😀. Sure enough, checking the photo's on my phone there it was, and I was going down a quiet road on the left, in May of this year! Co. Mayo (?) 🤔 I think. 30 days wild camping and hostelling in Ireland, cycling from Belfast to Sligo, Mayo, Connemara and Galway...with a couple of islands thrown in(Achill and Inish Mor). Just over 800 miles on my vintage Dawes Galaxy mixte.
I'm off backpacking in Morocco for 2 months in January, and can't wait!

Lucky you Graeme - living the dream it seems!! And a new Brompton thrown in for good measure too 🙂 Yep that view is Doolough Valley in Mayo - a fabulous spot to camp for a night and cycle through. I was hoping to get over to Inis Mor myself last weekend and to get the ferry from Doolin in Clare instead of Rosaveel in Connemara. The ferry has stopped until March/April unfortunately though. I've cycled and filmed the other road twice so I wanted to try Doolin for a change. I headed to Clare with the camera anyway and had a great time. Yep Susanna has had a rough road with treatment but has been amazing in going out for overnight trips with her camera - what a woman! Happy planning for Morocco now - you definitely are living the dream!!
@@MiriamKennedy I dunno about living the dream😂, but I'm 63 in a few days and don't feel I can afford any longer to basically 'hibernate' for 3-4 month's every year any longer! So I'm chasing the sun now for a few months every year! The criteria has to be warm, sunny...and cheap! So SE Asia is maybe the best bet, as there's at least half a dozen countries in the region to go at, so as your visa nears expiring, or the weather takes a turn for the worst in one country you can hop to another one fairly frictionless and cheaply🤷♂️. The one drawback is the cost of flights, and length of time of the initial journey! Morocco cuts a lot of that out. Flights to Marrakech are 3-4 hours and direct. Its not quite as cheap, or as warm(especially at night), but flights are not much more than a tenth of the cost of what I spent on them going to Nepal and returning from Thailand! It's a bit like touring by bike, its an experiment...and you get thing's wrong...but it's never boring! 🙂🤷♂️
Absolutely not boring!! I’ve done my fair share travelling in SE Asia and Nepal and India. I seem to have lost all interest in foreign travel since I started my little exploration of wild camping in Ireland though 🤷♀️ I used to head away for a few months at a time but I’ve lost that urge completely for a number of years now. It might return in time!! You’re living as you want to live - that sounds like living the dream to me 😉 New adventures await - with sunshine and cheaper costs hopefully!! Sounds great 😊

When cycling I take a thermarest trekker chair which is bliss and little weight, I think they've replaced it for me a few times oh and replaced my mat like yours , I would change it but so light compact and comfy. Enjoy.

try a non air pillow, that can compress. its more weight and bulk but 10 times better sleep. so its worth it imo.

Great to watch. Thanks for sharing Miriam - useful information. Always a challenge for me to travel light, but you seem to have it just right. Is your Brompton a standard three speed or six speed model? How do you find going up steep hills? I’ve had my Brompton upgraded, so I have the gearing now to tackle steep climbs which help in places like the Yorkshire Dales, Yorkshire Wolds and the North York Moors

I just hop off the bike and walk when it’s too tough - at some stage I’ll get it together to get it adjusted 🤞 Those that have it done seem to speak well of the impact!! Hey Miriam, Iv recently discovered ur videos, &find them inspiring. As a younger guy I loved camping/backpacking..but life sometimes gets in the way, &years elapse; &now I find myself wanting 2re-explore those halcyon days with new adventures (b4 mor years pass)..My old kit is in dire need of update (as am I..haha) &I am in the process of putting sum kit 2together; so love these kind of vidios..Just ordered a Lanshan 1 pro, &the very next video I watch, u say u didnt like it..haha..I had 2laugh, life does that sumtimes..It may suit me, time will tell..I also have a brompton that iv used 4work 4the last 15yrs but it never entered my head 2use it 4camping..looking 4ward 2checking out mor of ur vids 4inspiration.
Hi Tim - sounds like some new adventures await!! Oh that’s bizarre that you ordered your Lanshan 1 Pro and then get subjected to my complaints!! As you well know, so many people love them and hopefully you’ll be one of them - my main gripe was the condensation and being paranoid of my beloved Rab Sleeping bag hitting the walls of the tent, I just couldn’t relax with it. ‘Border Rambler’ has done some great modifications with his Lanshan 1 Pro which always impress me and he absolutely loves his! I was using my Brompton for a good few years too before I took the plunge of camping with it - I was using it before I even realised there was such a thing as wild camping…after a while I spotted others on TH-cam doing stuff and eventually took the plunge myself. I had started making videos of occasional hiking and camping trips and then a video of Susanna Thornton’s inspired me to do a trip again with the Brompton and make a video of it. Good luck with all the spending and new adventures that await!! It sounds like life is sending you back out with a tent again - a good way to be spending time I reckon 😊
Haha..know wat u mean about the spending..but I dont mind that so much..Wen I was younger &starting out, I had 2make do with sum awful gear..back in the day it was either army surplus or Millets finest (b4 goretex was even invented..haha)..I've limped homeward with blisters on my feet, &on my back &shoulders wer the external frame &webbing from sum crappy rucksack had rubbed me raw..haha..nowadays, the kit available is fantastic &relatively cheap..I like 2b comfortable these days &enjoy being outdoors..That's the trade off tho (in my humble opinion) better 2b a little uncomfortable &b out ther, rather than not step outside until u hav everything under the sun..haha..So despite my love of creature comforts, I'll hav 2make do a little, until I hav better kit, or mor time will pass me by..I've been watching some of ur other vidios on you tube &hav thoroughly enjoyed them, thank you Miriam! U seem a quiet, unpretentious &lovely person & I will continue 2watch ur beautiful vidios 4mor inspiration..bless u 😊🏕

@@MiriamKennedy Hey Miriam, thanx to serendipitously discovering your videos; as I said to you before, that you have inspired me to do some solo wild camping myself..being of similar age to your good self..Ironically I ordered a Lanshan 1 pro..then watched this vidio were that particular tent got a big thumbs down from yourself..haha..Anyway, my Lanshan arrived about 3days ago..I had to seal the seems myself, but two days later, I'm sending this message from my Lanshan camped beside Low water tarn on The Old Man of Coniston, in the Lake District☺ I'm having to make do with some of my kit until I can replace it with better and mor up to date equipment, but @least I'm out &raising my mug of Tea to you and your inspiration..Hope you're well Miriam, and out and about yourself..take care..ps will let you know how the Lanshan performs 🙂

Hi Andrew - I just happened to be scrolling through messages and realised that I never answered your question about the drone I use. I was using DJI Mini 2 for a few years and just very recently upgraded to the DJI Mini 4 Pro for some additional features. I hope you made your trip to Ireland with your Bromptons and if not, that you enjoyed your trip anyway if you still came! 😊
Another very interesting vid. Have to say I admire your approach -i do love to try out new kit but often end up going back to the old and tested favourites. Do you take any bike spares when you're on the Brompton?
Cheers Jimmy - I take a spare tube and some tools should I need to remove the tyre etc. Brompton have a toolkit that includes everything you need, there would be many expletives from me if that happened though!! Yeah like you - I like trying some new things but there are plenty of things I stick with 🤷♀️ Hope all well your side on your adventures!!

May I ask, what is the average weight of luggage you’d carry and how it handles. I’m planning on touring on my Brompton (for the first time) and I am currently thinking of different luggage solutions. I like the idea of the rear bag, seems more stable than a big rucksack! Many thanks :)
Hi Simon! Thanks for letting me know you’ve been enjoying the videos, lovely to hear. To be honest I’ve never weighed my gear - I do realise that lightweight is the way to go but I’m not too hardened to it. My big ticket items are lightweight - tent, mattress and sleeping bag (currently only weighing about 2.6kg in total). I truly don’t know what everything else weighs. I like my comforts too, however my camera gear (Go Pro, drone, powerbank, spare batteries are adding to my weight also). The rear rack bag with the tent and sleeping bag attached works for me. I’ve always assumed that a backpack on the carrier would be more stable than my setup but mine hasn’t caused me any difficulties to be honest. It’s a bit of a pain attaching the tent etc to the rear bag but I definitely get quicker at it as I use it more. I’m now using the roll-top waterproof Brompton bag on the front which I’m very happy with too. Sorry I couldn’t be more specific to you! I just walk up a hill when I can’t cycle and it doesn’t bother me for my short trips at all. Water is a big weight too but with access to water in shops etc I don’t need to carry much in fairness. Happy gear shopping and planning for your trips - it’s a pain trying to decide what to get I know…hopefully it will work for you whatever you decide!! 😊

Hi Alan - you’re very welcome! I don’t use a bike computer, I’m really a novice at it all and I’ve only done a few Bikepacking trips. I use ordinance survey maps (paper and online). I usually plot a route beforehand and I use my phone to navigate to the route - the App that I use is Outdooractive. I’m sure there are better cycling specific apps but I use this one as someone introduced it to me for hiking and I have kept using it to date. Best of luck with your planning and getting stuff together, it’s all part of the fun!!

Very interesting to see what other people with camping experience use. I am only starting out, so all this info helps immensely👍. I use a two person tent as well and love the room but not the weight . So am looking to shed weight in other areas, it's strange that you have to spend more to get less. Keep up the videos. Hi Andrew! It took me years to let go of the space of my 2 person tent!! I loved it so much (and still do) - maybe I had to have all those years to build myself up to a one person tent 🤔 It’s not as luxurious but it’s working well for me and the half kilo weight saving and less bulky tent size is a nice saving for sure! Yep - we’ve to spend more for less for sure! 🤦♀️ Hope yours isn’t driving you too mad though!! Hard to find the balance with it all…hope yours is working out ok 🤞 I started off using a free package called iMovie for editing and I used to do all the filming and editing on my phone. Then in the last year I bought Final Cut Pro (I think it was a one off license for about €200 maybe…) The features are a little better than iMovie but as far as I remember, iMovie was pretty good! I’m editing on my MacBook rather than my phone now too. When I started using the drone and GoPro it made it easier to edit on a bigger screen rather than on my phone! I’ve just spotted you’re posting videos - great, I’ll be checking that out!! 🤗

A gear loadout, so I just had to watch. Never heard of a Brompton before this video. Paused the video a short way in and spent over an hour reading about Brompton bikes and their brilliance. Who knew I needed to know this. It's diabolically clever on your part to draw in an unsuspecting viewer.

I’m slightly biased perhaps, but they are the coolest looking bike and such fun to cycle! Hi. Advice re handlebars please. I'm thinking of getting the straight version and wondered how you find these - advantages and disadvantages - for touring. I live in a hilly area and am used to straight bars on my regular bike. Thank you for the videos which I have found very helpful.
Hi Deborah - I’ve only ever tried the S Bar type which I use so I can’t give you an informed opinion I’m afraid. Like you, I was used to this type of handlebar and being perfectly honest I loved the look of them. I didn’t bother trying any other type and just went with it. I am stooped a bit while cycling but I’m still very happy with them (I’m 175cm tall). The other types may be more comfortable, I really don’t know. I’ve no regrets with the S Bar. The best thing would be to try the various options if you live near a stockist - however I know that mightn’t be possible. Sorry I couldn’t be more help! This is my second Brompton (my first one was stolen after 9 years) - I went with the S handlebar for both 😉

Hi Meera - I hope you get to realise that dream!! I use the standard Brompton 3 gear ratio, I’ve never tried the other options to know what I’m missing 😉 Sounds like you’ve loads of experience with your Brompton(s) so I hope you go for it! I’ve recently just upgraded my front bag and I’m now using the fully waterproof Brompton front bag. Very happy with it! 😉
@@MiriamKennedy Thanks Miriam, Interesting that you manage just fine on the standard 3 speed. I do love the simplicity of the 3 speed and it’s just a lot of fun to ride. -12% seems to hit the sweet spot for me. It’s the same ratio as you get on the new A line (old components) so it may be worth trying one out to see if you like it if you ever decide you want to see how it feels. The waterproof bag does look great for touring, there are so many options and I’m afraid that I have a bit of a Brompton bag obsession, I have far too many already! But will look into that when I tour.

Lovely to have a such a well stripped down minimal setup. Nearly everyone brings far too much stuff on adventures. As a teenager, i used to travel all over the place, hitch hiking on the thumb, with little more than a bed roll (made of a cheap sleeping bag, foam pad and army bivvy), a mess tin, and a spare pair of socks. Never felt the lack of anything. Nowadays of course, i worry about all sorts of eventualities, and bring too much , that i never use.
Cheers Chris! I’m sure you’re being too hard on yourself there - your tarp setup always looks very minimalist! Your Kelly Kettle is a definite necessity when you can manage to bring it too 😎 It was interesting writing out the gear list in the video description as there are a number of things that could be considered unnecessary. Comfort is always of high interest to me (I suppose that also means not having too heavy a load) but I certainly won’t compromise on little niceties that add to the overall pleasure of a trip! 😊 That being said I was given genes that get great pleasure in throwing out things I don’t need!! 😂
@@MiriamKennedy I think it's because i almost always cook over a fire, so end up bringing a saw and a hatchet if the available timber is likely to be quite heavy, then maybe a grill to set over it, or a heavy knife to craft what i need, plus a fry pan and a billy can etc. A wee mess kit a bottle of gas is a lot simpler! Have to say though, if i compare what i bring, to the amount that Colin fella drags along, i'm practically Marie Kondo!! :D

Hi Sam - I have no cycling clothes at all 🤷♀️ I’m very amateurish and get away with just wearing my normal clothes. Oh I see you mentioned clothes I wear camping. My hiking boots are Lowa Renegade GTX and I wear a lot of Rab gear when hiking. Inside the tent in cold weather I wear a pair of down booties to keep my feet warm when in the sleeping bag and again in colder weather I wear a base layer of merino wool clothes in the sleeping bag. Besides that there is nothing special about my clothes. My Rain gear is all Goretex too to keep me dry when out in the elements. Hope that helps! Thanks for your message 👍
I can't figure out what happens, in my backpack for a five day walk with food I can get it to under 10kg but when I go bike packing it always weighs more!
Have recently started using quilts instead of my sleeping bag, have to say that for three seasons use it's easier to live with. ☺️
Your pack weight gain when biking is a mystery alright!! I’ve no idea what the weight of my gear is - I just know it feels a bit easier when loaded on the bike than my back 😉 I haven’t tried a quilt yet, no doubt I will in time…although I love my Rab bags 😊
Good work. I immediately send respect to any hill walking utuber who makes an open declaration on paid content: infomercials, scripted advert segments, amazon product % links, and products gifted from the industry. Like most of us I really enjoy learning about a climbers kit and viewpoint on it, and seeing it in use. The difficulty I have is when I am being mislead about what I am viewing. This affects me greatly because I find I develop a trusting relationship with the climber (video maker) learning routes from them, how to manage situations, environmental protection ethics... and so when they are then forced by state law or utube regulation to put in a few seconds of flashed content warning somewhere hidden deep in the video I feel badly betrayed and unsubscribe from that climber. I have unsubscribed from few of the biggest climbing channels in Scotland and Wales. I understand a climbers very real sense that they have put so much effort and money in bringing climbing vids to utube for me to enjoy, but I need to know where I am watching an infomercial, and where I am watching someone like me, with the same aspirations, challenges, and concerns. Thank you - doing a video on product reviews is a million miles from anything I’d like to 😉 This one talking about my gear was a once off (I think!), I basically challenged myself to do it as someone asked me to do it and I decided to push myself to see what it would be like. There are plenty of people who like to do content like that and I feel leave them to it. Like you, sometimes I like watching that kind of stuff but quite often it leaves a bad taste for me, I mostly like watching people that have no aspirations to make anything from TH-cam. I started this just to capture memories for myself, then some other people seemed to enjoy them which was a thrill. Eventually I got the courage to speak on a video - which was now moving so far from why I started posting videos. I was using TH-cam as a repository but then I got more into it and started to learn from others. It’s still a learning curve to see what I feel moved to do - I only bring a camera with me when I feel a strong pull to do so. I’m a classic introvert that wonders what the heck I’m doing speaking to a camera. I also think there is enough of a buying culture for everyone and I don’t necessarily want to contribute to that - again, I’ll leave that to others! Cheers for your message!

I’m a solo female of a #cough# certain age 😬 and for me also I love to carry my home on a bike and setting up camp at the destination is what it’s all about. Lounging inside a tent with a book and Radio 4 on my little transistor radio while the rain patters down - is there ever a heaven like this? 🤗
